    Today is 24th June 2023. This show is exactly 45 years old. Who’d have thought I’d still be listening to the best band ever this long.

    Mike Rutherford is an absolute monster bass player.

    That bit at 2.23 - 2.33 is possibly my favourite bit in all Genesis music. Those chords!

    Each live performance found on RUclips by this band makes you appreciate them even more so. Truly a top ten group of all-time. If you liked this version of "The Lady Lies", be sure to check out "In the Cage medley" during their 1984 Mama Tour and "Abacab", Wembley '87.

    The bass is incredible in this song. Rutherford is underrated.

      +Syncratic That's Daryl Stuermer on Bass - 0:47 (four strings) - on other camera angles he plays an e.guitar (???) - audible clean guitar arpeggios on 2nd verse and overdriven guitar solo (Daryl style)at the end. Not sure though if this footage is all from the same gig since it seems that Mike also (????) plays bass on the lower neck of his double neck. The phrasing is typical Mike Rutherford (picked), but back in 1978 he rarely had that that fat sound. I have bootlegs where Mike even uses a horrible fuzz distortion on bass. Perhaps they are swapping bass and guitar?

    • @ChristianSchonbergerMusic
      @ChristianSchonbergerMusic 8 лет назад

      +biggles4441 Yep. I was almost sure that the footage was not from the same gig. Now I am sure. :-) I never trust 100% what I see in any video/movie from a band anyway. Not (just) because of "cheating" or sloppy editing, but because of footage that isn't there (covered) and has to be padded (film mag changes, too few video cameras and at one time all were re-framing/zooming, focusing etc.). Tons of video/film footage (in one single tune!) from any band is from two or more consecutive gigs at the same venue - and (fewer) are assembled from different venues. I know because I own a nice collection of the "official" and legal Genesis live bootleg videos (Belgium 72, Bataclan 73, Shepperton 73 BluRay, In Concert 76, Dallas 77, Tokyo 78 and London Lyceum '80 - various versions from two consecutive days) and of course the official releases which also have some padding in places (Wembley 87, When in Rome 2007, which even has the audio fixed in some places, but nothing dramatic as far as I know). At least '70s Genesis is all 100% live.

      well he's not a flashy musician so.....nobody takes a look at.......but yes , he's one of the most underrated musician .....really good acoustic guitar player with his tricky chords

    • @johnnicholson8345
      @johnnicholson8345 6 лет назад +3

      Wrong. Mike played Bass on the Lady on every show, no exceptions. He used the Hagstrom double neck. Trust me, I was in a Genesis tribute and can point you to numerous live videos of Mike playing this. Daryl played the lead. Some of the video is not from the audio but most of it is.

    this song depicted all the aspects of a genesis song. Very RUSH-like with double base peddle , snare strikes, and guitar rips in story telling setting, and haunting keyboard symphony riffs; you feel like you're in another world, during song, if you let it absorb you...brilliant

    It's staggering that Genesis never recorded any full shows from the 70's, althopugh IIRC there is a 1973 performance in a studio (BBC?) Why wasn't the Lamb shows filmed? Or Knebworth 78 in its entirity? Genesis should have had their own "Song remains the same" film. For such a good and visual live band, it's a real sahme they haven't.

    Excellent version and great video and audio but... What's wrong with the cameramen? I wanna watch Tony Banks playing his instrumental! Gosh, even we saw clearly Phil Collins introduce him with a gesture before running like Roadrunner to his drumset, (rage mode on) WHY ON THE EARTH DON'T YOU SHOW ME BANKS PLAYIIIIIIING!!? GOOOOOOOOD!!! (rage mode off) Wait, that airview plane that seems like it's underwater is Tony? Humor apart, seriously it's quite annoying to have the Tony solo and no cameras pointing to him or a few awkward angles
