The devastating crash of a Jeju Air passenger jet at South Korea's Muan International Airport killed 179 of the 181 people on board. The December 29, 2024, aviation disaster was the latest in the grim history of tragedies in the country resulting in significant loss of life. Other major incidents include a devastating 2022 Halloween crowd crush, the 2014 sinking of the Sewol ferry and a subway fire in 2003. The disasters over the past three decades have deeply impacted South Korean society, raising crucial questions about safety standards, emergency preparedness and the need for improved regulations across various sectors.

All nations globally have their share of disasters and tragedies, the issue with South Korea is that many of their calamities are avoidable. Thank you for pointing this out. I wanted to make a point about this but worried it wouldn't be taken well as it comes off possibly critical. I can't help but think though that the proper education, may help prevent future disasters. My understanding is that Korea has a "hurry" culture and one about deferring to seniority and not making critical thinking judgments. I see this as a huge problem in most Asian countries however that are influenced by Confucianism. It also reminds me of my studies back in college. A lot of the foreign students told me they don't focus on critical thinking back home (China, Korea, etc). Whereas in most Western nations, you learn about critical thinking as early as middle school and it becomes integral part of our education system to not be afraid to ask questions.

We still don't know if that's the case with Jeju Air but the odds of Korea constantly being in the news for disasters gone wrong either means the media is focusing either too much on Korea or that there is a pattern that is not due to randomness as the percentage of this happening is fairly high.

However I agree that a simple birdstrike wouldn't have caused the hyrdaulics to fail completely. Even if it did, the landing gears can be lowered manually, with the help of gravity. It was most definitely a chain of human mistakes during the landing procedure that caused this accident.

I'm reminded of Asiana Airlines and apparently Korean Air back in 1997. I'm not an expert and only speculating from what I've heard but apparently a lot of these accidents are a result of judgment call error. Haste, the "hurry" culture and also the culture of following orders without trying to critically think for themselves if the orders are even rational. Of course we shouldn't criticize when so many lives are lost but it is food for thought maybe in hopes to provide the education to prevent further incidences like these.
