Kids today will never understand how monumentally _huge_ Pokémon was in the late nineties and early two thousands. I remember it like it was yesterday, there were Pokémon toys _everywhere_ and Kelloggs even had their own knock off Lucky Charms based around it. I honestly wish I could go back to that time. Loved watching the anime on Sky 1 and playing the games on my Gameboy Colour.
Thank you. On my way to see this performance I got into a massive car accident as a child. Ironically we hit a patch of black ice coming off of a highway, spun out, and crashed into a post office. To this day the memory of Pokémon on ice has haunted me. Today I finally heal the trauma by seeing the show denied to me by the whimsies of winter.
Although you may never receive the credit you're due for this labor of love, through your hard work and effort future generations will be able to experience this play in its absolute best known quality. It may seem like an overstatement, but you have validated all the hard work and effort the actors and crew put into this play to make it a success and have kept it from becoming forever lost to time. You should be exceptionally proud of yourself Benjamin, and for what it's worth you've made one Pokémon fan very happy.
I think a lot of the actors in this would prefer it be lost to time lmao I mean can you fucking IMAGINE the feeling of doing this whole thing and then doing the final note and you all put your arms up and there’s ZERO applause? My heart grew at least 4 sizes watching this. Being poor, I never would have had the chance to see Pokemon Live. But seeing it now, nearly 25 years later, feels like a dream come true and I promise I was crying A LOT.
Well did you know the person who played James is andrew rannells who says it’s one of the most embarrassing things he has ever done and sat on a speaker and cried about it once wondering why he did this so let’s just say he wasn’t having a blast 😂😂😂
Andrew Rannells, the person playing James, said he would rather do a snuff or porn film than do this performance again. He also cried backstage during this performance because he hated it that much.
Time for me to ruin the fun: recordings of stage shows *rarely* recorded the audience reactions. When you could only buy a VHS tape of a play, you don't want kids screaming and talking being picked up by the microphone. It distracts from the actors performances. I was able to see the show as a kid, I vividly recall the crowd going nuts. And by crowd, I mean the crowd of kids at the front. The parents were all in the back chain smoking and reading.
With how much the anime was censored, I really enjoyed the subtle adult humor in this. 4Kids would often censor scenes where Ash would get slapped by Misty, while this show would include a gag of Brock getting punched in the face for womanizing. I guess they knew parents would have to sit through it with their kids, so they made it fun.
I think most of the censorship on TV was cuz of TV content regulations and stuff. Since this wasn't on TV, they didn't really need to follow the same rules.
It might very well have been canon in America at one point. I remember an actual episode airing where Giovanni told Jessie and James to stop stealing Ash’s Pikachu, claiming Ash is his son. It only aired like once though before being pulled and it has never been rereleased with that original English dubbed scene… and no one else seems to remember it somehow. :(

Fun fact: Before this video restoration, one of the cinematographers or people in charge of running the show actually uploaded the full show back in the early 2010s. However it remained the same quality as shown here. However, seeing what this has been done in 2020 compared to the 2010s, it's nice to be able to archive, preserve, and be able to share what is pretty much forgotten and rather lackluster these days compared to now. It's surprising considering I was 4 years old when this show was happening, and yet the pokemon center that we visited in November 2001 was nearly two months after 9/11 attacks occurred. So seeing something like this months before the WTC was hit is awesome to look back on. At that time there were only two generations of pokemon out, and Gold/Silver just released in the year 1999/2000. And yet this show came out nearly three months after Pokemon The Movie 2000 was in theaters. I'm fortunate enough for my siblings and I whom grew up in the early to mid 1990s and early 2000s, to look back at this timepoint in history with fond nostalgia of how Pokemon got its start, and where it is today. Many Gen Zers whom were born in 2001 and later never got a chance to know just how big Pokemon Mania was in America (I'm sure my sister bought a ton of toys, cases, cards, etc. while my oldest brother was into video games, star wars, movies, and even T/M rated games, while my second older brother and I loved whatever our two older siblings brought home. I was more of a Hot Wheels racing type of person, so Pokemon was a bit hard to follow considering the RPG elements. But considering I did try to watch the show in the past, the movies were just more interesting than the show, but that's just me. Benjamin, thanks for preserving, archiving, and editing, mastering/audio leveling this forgotten cult classic show that many pokemon fans will love for generations to come, even if the 2000s has long since passed on. Personally, this is why I always tell people, if I ever get a time machine, whether a deloreon, Bill and Ted's phone booth, H.G.Well's machine, or as simple as using a watch to take you Back In Time (Huey Lewis & Pitbull reference), I would love to re-live the late 90s early 2000s (or simply the Y2K era) again, and also the early to mid 2000s once more.
I begged my parents to take me to this. My neighbors were watching me, my dad was late coming home from work and they decided to go to Rugrats in Paris which I had already seen. They said I could wait home by myself until my dad got home, I was almost 8 or come with them. I went and when I got home my dad told me he had planned on taking me to Pokémon Live. I’m never going to be over it.
Sorry to hear that, I was 5 when PK-Live toured and the show didn't even come to my state. Can't imagine how frustrating it'd be to have a relatively close performance yet still miss it! Hope this was finally worth the 20-year wait :)

I noticed that the Chris Mitchell posted video which was lower quality was the recording for the day after the show I was supposed to go to. I went back to that one to watch a few scenes (Figured it out because it would have been the Friday Milwaukee show since we would have went to the movies on a Friday and his was the Saturday show). Weird that this show basically only toured the Northeast, Midwest and like two cities in the south.
While they did use live action actors, I'm also appreciating the tribute to the TV series by using several of the voice actors in the production, like Maddie Blaustein, Ikue Otani, Michael Haigney, Rachael Lillis and Jay Goede.
4kids was weirdly progressive in some regards, they had a lot of gay and trans voice actors and they edited out some of the racist caricatures you see in anime. Though one could argue editing Pokémon and other anime as heavily as they did is still kinda racist
Musical and Pokémon fan here :) I know Andrew Rannells didn’t like this role, but he did such an amazing job! Jessie and James are very extra and goofy and portrayed accurately! Songs are cute and catchy. Dancing is FIRE. The Pokémon are tough to do “live” but they did their best. I’d absolutely watch this production live!
Tell me about it, these songs are going to be stuck in my head for years to come! Having to constantly sync and re-sync video and audio while hiding cuts and transitions to the best of my ability, it's a task I wouldn't wish on even the most patient lol

Pokémon anime was okay. It did reach rise in the 🔴🟢🔵🟡 years , and did well well in the GS years, but something happened ratings wise during the ruby sapphire and emerald years
Say what you like, but it's still going, though like the games, the worst it's ever been, except for New Snap. Super hopeful the Sinnoh remakes and Arceus change Gen 8's prospects though.

I specifically remember when this was first announced there was a commerical that used part of the Giovanni video at 3:17, but instead of mentioning the diamond badge he says somewhere along the lines of "If you dare to challenge me come to Pokemon Live at Radio City, I'll be waiting for you" and when he throws the Pokeball it said the date it was opening. If someone has a video of that commercial I must see it to know it was real, because it's been ingrained in memory for years.
How did I not see this Giovanni being the guy who plays Pegasus in Yu-Gi-Oh!? The hint was right there in the plot of this stageplay! Giovanni welcomed all- his honored guests- to the ultimate duel with the best of the best. At his invitation, they came to compete for the honor of suffering the final defeat! ... _At the hands of his MechaMew2._
Omg, wow this beautiful! This brings back memories. I remember seeing this advertised on Kids WB when during the commercials of the Orange Islands Season of Pokemon. Was so excited when my father got me tickets to see it. I was in 6th grade then and got to see it live at the Pepsi Coliseum in Indianapolis. Loved it! This restoration is on point because that is exactly how the Pokedex screens looked on both sides of the show with all the various anime scenes playing through the live performance. I also remembered how many cameras and TVs the stage crew had set up on the ground floor as our seats where up above it in the Mezzanine. Really thought back then they would have eventually produced a live recording of the show at some point because of that. But I think the show's popularity diminished over time and especially when it went overseas, at least that was the rumor then. I loved that used songs from the 2BA Master album as well as the Pokemon Jukebox. I still have the large MechaMewTwo trading card they gave out to everyone in the theater for coming to the show before the show started. Never will forget it and never realized, as a Pokefan, how lucky I was to see it back then. So glad others can see it now and experience it.
I grew up with Pokèmon on VHS, and as weird as this musical was, it really does remind me of how much I used to love this series. Nowadays I wish it had ended, and I'm disappointed with how the story has been going (especially with a lack of the bigger side of Team Rocket getting focus) but at least the good times were fun while they lasted.
@@aeroblu2002 I think there’s still good times… the anime is definitely not what it used to be but it’s still lightly entertaining and I think the games are still fun… course, the level curve on BDSP should have been altered to better fit those of us who “abuse” the Underground but other than that, I’ve got no complaints… and I’m still excited for Pokémon Legends Arceus coming in a few weeks! It’s being made by GameFreak so it should perform a lot better than BDSP. I’m hoping so very much that this is just another time where a bunch of people jump ship and return when times are better… post games in Pokémon would be very disappointing without an active fan base and I don’t plan on leaving anytime soon… I don’t think I’d cope well without Pokémon even if the quality of it sometimes hits a drop. I’ve been here in the Pokémon world for about 21 years now and I can only look at more to come because of that.
I’m so glad there are uploads of this musical. I wanted to go see it so badly when I was little but we live in South Texas so it would have cost a lot for tickets, a hotel room and a flight… and we have never had anyone into the theater in our family that knew to tell us that shows like this often end up traveling to different cities. But even if this one did travel, I live in a city that’s very stupid and ignorant when it comes to geeky stuff. We are lucky we had an anime convention before COVID. A show like this would never have traveled to my town. I’m extremely lucky we also had CATS make it’s way to a stage here and I’m betting they only allowed it because it was award winning. Still though, I’m glad they let us have CATS at least since it is one of my favorite shows. But I’ll be DARNED if I wouldn’t show up to this with my Ash Ketchum Kanto League hat and my ORIGINAL 1999 Pikachu plush backpack… I’d also bring all my “real Pokémon” at least as far as the 3DS and Switch are concerned… maybe also my Gameboy. Idk. But they’d all be there in my bag in case someone wants to make trades during intermission or after the show.

it's weird how into this super weird and SUPER non-canon musical i got after a bit. the original songs are top notch,the set was pretty good and i legit wonder how many children the team rocket trio ended up offending by yelling at them and calling them babies.XD this show is a trip for sure,but a good one.
The kids of these performances probably are loving Team Rocket now even though they hated them back when this show was made. The Pokemon Company would be making some MAAAD money if it worked on a new 'Pokemon Live' stage show for 2023.

This is the best thing ever! This show has touched me in a very special way. Here is my story: I fell in love with the Pokémon anime series growing up as a child when I was 5 years old. I kind of fell out of it when I was 8 years old and got back into it when I was 10. Then when re-discovering the anime series, movies, manga, voice actors and video games I came across the Wikipedia page of this show. I was bummed to learn that it didn't come to Miami when it was still touring between the 2000-2001 run. I then came across the commercial on RUclips and the cast album of the show on Amazon Music. My dad then downloaded the soundtrack songs onto my iPod 2006 (yes that iPod lol). I listened to the Pokémon Live! soundtrack non-stop throughout middle school and high school and looking back, I believe this show sparked my interest in music theater. Growing up diagnosed on the autism spectrum was difficult, as I was very sensitive to sights, loud sounds, smells etc. and live theater was a massive combination of that, and I was beyond scared of going to live children shows (ex: Barney, The Wiggles, Disney on Ice). But learning about this particular show I think it a way helped me overcome that fear because the production was based on something I grew up loving as a child. So then when more different shows (kid shows, live theatre, Broadway shows on tour, Miami City Ballet, Rockettes, Lord of the Dance etc.) came to the South FL area, I begged my family to take me to them, and we went and I was fascinated by them. Then I thought to myself "I want to do that and perform on stage" and then I got involved in concert band, singing, voice lessons, choir, plays and musical theatre in middle and high school. Once I began performing on stage I started to open up more and socialize/talk with other people and made new friends as I didn't have a lot growing up. I suddenly felt a massive boost in my confidence and began expressing my emotions and improving my communication skills. To this day I still perform in choir and I love Broadway shows, anime, Miyazaki, and Star Wars. Using the performance skills I learned in my music theater classes, I now advocate for adults and children with special needs/disabilities. (So sorry for the long comment) but long story short: Even though I did not get the chance to see Pokémon Live! in its original run, I did some reminiscing during this pandemic and I realized how much this show (indirectly) helped me mature into the person I am to this today. Coming across the soundtrack, learning about the show online and watching the original upload from Chris Mitchell during Spring Break of 2012 changed my life and helped me find the confidence inside me that I never knew I had. Thank you so much for saving this show and to everyone who was involved in this production thank you from the bottom of my heart for being a part of that push that helped me become who I am today. 😊❤
Especially for Pokemon's 30th anniversary or Pokemon Live's 30th anniversary, I would love to see one made for current generations and play not just the first two generations music, but also generation's 3 - 10 music as well.
This is a different performance than Chris Mitchell’s video if I’m right. It’s definitely the original actor for Misty, where as the understudy saw spotlights in the performance Chris Mitchell filmed and posted. I didn't live close enough to a town where this was being played, so I thought I would never see this ever, until I found some people who recorded and posted this on RUclips. I'm forever grateful. I didn't manage to buy the MechaMewTwo cards that were passed out at the event though. As a kid, I would have loved the spontanious singing, but now I wish they would skip the songs and just continue with the story. I love the show anyway, I just wish they put this story in the anime to make to really awesome. I don't care how bad people said it was. To us Gen 1 fans, we'll always be grateful to the casts and crew that made this show possible. Thank you from all of us

With 3rd Movie being Ash and Pikachu's first anniversary I figured Kanto took half a year and Orange Islands was the other.
The show wasn't bad actually. I must say, I liked the performances and the musical numbers. This really should've been released in some way before being forgotten.
Thank you so much for uploading this! I grew up with Pokemon,but I didn't learn about this underrated event until recently. This was incredibly unique and fascinating, for a stage play adaptation of Pokemon. I'm just a little sad that it never came to St.Louis. My bros and I would loved to see this at Fox or at Powell as kids.
This feels so much like watching an episode of the 4Kids dub of "Pokémon". It's got that same charm. (Probably because 4Kids actually co-produced this show. They even had a few of their voice actors in the cast, such as Andrew Rannells (Morty) as James and Darren Dunstan (Stephen and Barrett) as Giovanni. And even though they just reused existing Pikachu vocal effects, Pikachu's voice actress Ikue Ohtani came to view one of the dress rehearsals.
This show was awesome, thank you for uploading this. My research shows there were never any performances in LA but I like to think my parents would have took me and my sister if there was. They actually liked Pokemon a bit too. It's sad how we things have changed since then. We all grew up and face adult hardships. Ash split from Brock and Misty and isn't someone we follow anymore. Everything changes.
Coming back to watch this masterpiece of a musical in 2024 brings a lot of nostalgia, the fact that this was in 2001 [a year before I came into the world in 2002] is awesome.

My uncle would take me and my brother every year. They were so fun to attend and it was a great experience. The snacks were over priced but my uncle still bought them. Also, you could meet some of the actors after the show for a small fee. My uncle would only take us every year if we agreed to shower with him and let him use our hands to play with himself. So we went for 3-4 years straight

I remember going. It was in Chicago. I remember it a lot. Was I the only one who brought a camera even though it said it wasn’t allowed. I took about 10 pictures. The camera still is in my basement. The bad thing is that I can’t transfer it to my computer
i didn't go but you can see the latin American version of the play in Mexico. The script is the same and the are interviews with the kids that went to see it outside of the teather

I just can't stop being obsessed about this. It feels like being a fan around this time and watching it in person. The excitement is real here. @@mitchfletcher2386 no Ted left when 4kids lost the rights to Pokémon. Craig Blair took over as Giovanni in The first season of Diamond and Pearl. Then from the next season and on Giovanni is currently voiced by Ted Lewis.
I didn’t even know there was a Pokémon live back then, because I’m not sure if I ever saw the commercial, but I wish it wasn’t a failure and I wish it did get released on video or DVD, because Misty’s Song is my favorite musical number. It’s beautiful, and I wish they would revive the musical or do a sequel that takes place after the events, even if it means recasting all the characters since all the original actors are too old by now.
Love this so much! You put in an amazing effort to this and it shows, this has helped me fall even more in love with the show! Might comment some things I noticed during the show, will edit if I notice anything new because I'm a huge nerd for this show now. At 29:39 in the song "Best Friends" for Brock's solo, it sounds like they dubbed in his part from the cast recording album. Maybe in that specific show the actor was having an off-day with his voice. If you listen really closely at 1:29:26 it sounds like you can hear the actor for Ash drop the f-bomb backstage, his mic was not fully off I suppose. It sounds like something along the lines of, "The shouting is f-ing rude." Which makes sense since throughout that whole scene the crowd was shouting/booing through all of their lines. I just like Professor Oak’s funny dance at 1:40:51 Patrick seemed to have an absolute blast playing this character and I love the choices he put on him, is it weird to say Giovanni and Oak are dream roles for me now?
You know, although the idea is ridiculous, and there's some cheese to be had, this play is actually pretty solid! I mean, it's not gonna set your world on fire, but it's entertaining and the live actors were having fun. Also, "It Will All Be Mine" is an awesome song and I will fight anyone who says otherwise.

Not gonna lie. I liked this. Really Enjoyed The Pokemon Costumes. Not to mention getting to hear Jay Geode Reprising Mewtwo (at least I believe it's him). And the Mewtwo Suit at least from this distance looks pretty spot on
The sprinklers are part of the gym and Brock’s Pokémon both got knocked out. Ash won that fairly. Plus Ash was winning the battle against Misty. It got interrupted but it’s clear Ash was going to win.
Giovanni is played by a young Darren Dunstain, the actor who would go on to play Pegasus in Yugioh. Bakura's voice actor played Giovanni on the anime. In other words, bith of Yugioh's season 1 villains played Giovanni

Kids today will never understand how monumentally _huge_ Pokémon was in the late nineties and early two thousands. I remember it like it was yesterday, there were Pokémon toys _everywhere_ and Kelloggs even had their own knock off Lucky Charms based around it. I honestly wish I could go back to that time. Loved watching the anime on Sky 1 and playing the games on my Gameboy Colour.

Thank you. On my way to see this performance I got into a massive car accident as a child. Ironically we hit a patch of black ice coming off of a highway, spun out, and crashed into a post office. To this day the memory of Pokémon on ice has haunted me. Today I finally heal the trauma by seeing the show denied to me by the whimsies of winter.

Time for me to ruin the fun: recordings of stage shows *rarely* recorded the audience reactions. When you could only buy a VHS tape of a play, you don't want kids screaming and talking being picked up by the microphone. It distracts from the actors performances.
I was able to see the show as a kid, I vividly recall the crowd going nuts. And by crowd, I mean the crowd of kids at the front. The parents were all in the back chain smoking and reading.

With how much the anime was censored, I really enjoyed the subtle adult humor in this.
4Kids would often censor scenes where Ash would get slapped by Misty, while this show would include a gag of Brock getting punched in the face for womanizing. I guess they knew parents would have to sit through it with their kids, so they made it fun.
Shit 4KiDS shit the company is pretty much dead (yeah it’s owned by Konami just making it by ygo reruns and merch). Anime wise…sigh
I think most of the censorship on TV was cuz of TV content regulations and stuff. Since this wasn't on TV, they didn't really need to follow the same rules.

It might very well have been canon in America at one point. I remember an actual episode airing where Giovanni told Jessie and James to stop stealing Ash’s Pikachu, claiming Ash is his son. It only aired like once though before being pulled and it has never been rereleased with that original English dubbed scene… and no one else seems to remember it somehow. :(

Fun fact: Before this video restoration, one of the cinematographers or people in charge of running the show actually uploaded the full show back in the early 2010s. However it remained the same quality as shown here. However, seeing what this has been done in 2020 compared to the 2010s, it's nice to be able to archive, preserve, and be able to share what is pretty much forgotten and rather lackluster these days compared to now. It's surprising considering I was 4 years old when this show was happening, and yet the pokemon center that we visited in November 2001 was nearly two months after 9/11 attacks occurred. So seeing something like this months before the WTC was hit is awesome to look back on. At that time there were only two generations of pokemon out, and Gold/Silver just released in the year 1999/2000. And yet this show came out nearly three months after Pokemon The Movie 2000 was in theaters.
I'm fortunate enough for my siblings and I whom grew up in the early to mid 1990s and early 2000s, to look back at this timepoint in history with fond nostalgia of how Pokemon got its start, and where it is today. Many Gen Zers whom were born in 2001 and later never got a chance to know just how big Pokemon Mania was in America (I'm sure my sister bought a ton of toys, cases, cards, etc. while my oldest brother was into video games, star wars, movies, and even T/M rated games, while my second older brother and I loved whatever our two older siblings brought home. I was more of a Hot Wheels racing type of person, so Pokemon was a bit hard to follow considering the RPG elements. But considering I did try to watch the show in the past, the movies were just more interesting than the show, but that's just me.
Benjamin, thanks for preserving, archiving, and editing, mastering/audio leveling this forgotten cult classic show that many pokemon fans will love for generations to come, even if the 2000s has long since passed on. Personally, this is why I always tell people, if I ever get a time machine, whether a deloreon, Bill and Ted's phone booth, H.G.Well's machine, or as simple as using a watch to take you Back In Time (Huey Lewis & Pitbull reference), I would love to re-live the late 90s early 2000s (or simply the Y2K era) again, and also the early to mid 2000s once more.

I begged my parents to take me to this. My neighbors were watching me, my dad was late coming home from work and they decided to go to Rugrats in Paris which I had already seen. They said I could wait home by myself until my dad got home, I was almost 8 or come with them. I went and when I got home my dad told me he had planned on taking me to Pokémon Live. I’m never going to be over it.
Sorry to hear that, I was 5 when PK-Live toured and the show didn't even come to my state. Can't imagine how frustrating it'd be to have a relatively close performance yet still miss it! Hope this was finally worth the 20-year wait :)

I noticed that the Chris Mitchell posted video which was lower quality was the recording for the day after the show I was supposed to go to. I went back to that one to watch a few scenes (Figured it out because it would have been the Friday Milwaukee show since we would have went to the movies on a Friday and his was the Saturday show). Weird that this show basically only toured the Northeast, Midwest and like two cities in the south.

While they did use live action actors, I'm also appreciating the tribute to the TV series by using several of the voice actors in the production, like Maddie Blaustein, Ikue Otani, Michael Haigney, Rachael Lillis and Jay Goede.
Some of 4Kids' other voice actors were also in this show! For example, Andrew Rannells (Morty and Harley) played James.

Musical and Pokémon fan here :) I know Andrew Rannells didn’t like this role, but he did such an amazing job! Jessie and James are very extra and goofy and portrayed accurately! Songs are cute and catchy. Dancing is FIRE. The Pokémon are tough to do “live” but they did their best. I’d absolutely watch this production live!

Pokémon anime was okay. It did reach rise in the 🔴🟢🔵🟡 years , and did well well in the GS years, but something happened ratings wise during the ruby sapphire and emerald years

I specifically remember when this was first announced there was a commerical that used part of the Giovanni video at 3:17, but instead of mentioning the diamond badge he says somewhere along the lines of "If you dare to challenge me come to Pokemon Live at Radio City, I'll be waiting for you" and when he throws the Pokeball it said the date it was opening. If someone has a video of that commercial I must see it to know it was real, because it's been ingrained in memory for years.

I remember seeing this advertised on Kids WB when during the commercials of the Orange Islands Season of Pokemon. Was so excited when my father got me tickets to see it. I was in 6th grade then and got to see it live at the Pepsi Coliseum in Indianapolis. Loved it! This restoration is on point because that is exactly how the Pokedex screens looked on both sides of the show with all the various anime scenes playing through the live performance.
I also remembered how many cameras and TVs the stage crew had set up on the ground floor as our seats where up above it in the Mezzanine. Really thought back then they would have eventually produced a live recording of the show at some point because of that. But I think the show's popularity diminished over time and especially when it went overseas, at least that was the rumor then.
I loved that used songs from the 2BA Master album as well as the Pokemon Jukebox. I still have the large MechaMewTwo trading card they gave out to everyone in the theater for coming to the show before the show started. Never will forget it and never realized, as a Pokefan, how lucky I was to see it back then. So glad others can see it now and experience it.
I grew up with Pokèmon on VHS, and as weird as this musical was, it really does remind me of how much I used to love this series.
Nowadays I wish it had ended, and I'm disappointed with how the story has been going (especially with a lack of the bigger side of Team Rocket getting focus) but at least the good times were fun while they lasted.

I think there’s still good times… the anime is definitely not what it used to be but it’s still lightly entertaining and I think the games are still fun… course, the level curve on BDSP should have been altered to better fit those of us who “abuse” the Underground but other than that, I’ve got no complaints… and I’m still excited for Pokémon Legends Arceus coming in a few weeks! It’s being made by GameFreak so it should perform a lot better than BDSP.
I’m hoping so very much that this is just another time where a bunch of people jump ship and return when times are better… post games in Pokémon would be very disappointing without an active fan base and I don’t plan on leaving anytime soon… I don’t think I’d cope well without Pokémon even if the quality of it sometimes hits a drop. I’ve been here in the Pokémon world for about 21 years now and I can only look at more to come because of that.
I’m so glad there are uploads of this musical. I wanted to go see it so badly when I was little but we live in South Texas so it would have cost a lot for tickets, a hotel room and a flight… and we have never had anyone into the theater in our family that knew to tell us that shows like this often end up traveling to different cities. But even if this one did travel, I live in a city that’s very stupid and ignorant when it comes to geeky stuff. We are lucky we had an anime convention before COVID. A show like this would never have traveled to my town. I’m extremely lucky we also had CATS make it’s way to a stage here and I’m betting they only allowed it because it was award winning. Still though, I’m glad they let us have CATS at least since it is one of my favorite shows. But I’ll be DARNED if I wouldn’t show up to this with my Ash Ketchum Kanto League hat and my ORIGINAL 1999 Pikachu plush backpack… I’d also bring all my “real Pokémon” at least as far as the 3DS and Switch are concerned… maybe also my Gameboy. Idk. But they’d all be there in my bag in case someone wants to make trades during intermission or after the show.

This is the best thing ever! This show has touched me in a very special way. Here is my story: I fell in love with the Pokémon anime series growing up as a child when I was 5 years old. I kind of fell out of it when I was 8 years old and got back into it when I was 10. Then when re-discovering the anime series, movies, manga, voice actors and video games I came across the Wikipedia page of this show. I was bummed to learn that it didn't come to Miami when it was still touring between the 2000-2001 run. I then came across the commercial on RUclips and the cast album of the show on Amazon Music. My dad then downloaded the soundtrack songs onto my iPod 2006 (yes that iPod lol). I listened to the Pokémon Live! soundtrack non-stop throughout middle school and high school and looking back, I believe this show sparked my interest in music theater. Growing up diagnosed on the autism spectrum was difficult, as I was very sensitive to sights, loud sounds, smells etc. and live theater was a massive combination of that, and I was beyond scared of going to live children shows (ex: Barney, The Wiggles, Disney on Ice). But learning about this particular show I think it a way helped me overcome that fear because the production was based on something I grew up loving as a child. So then when more different shows (kid shows, live theatre, Broadway shows on tour, Miami City Ballet, Rockettes, Lord of the Dance etc.) came to the South FL area, I begged my family to take me to them, and we went and I was fascinated by them. Then I thought to myself "I want to do that and perform on stage" and then I got involved in concert band, singing, voice lessons, choir, plays and musical theatre in middle and high school. Once I began performing on stage I started to open up more and socialize/talk with other people and made new friends as I didn't have a lot growing up. I suddenly felt a massive boost in my confidence and began expressing my emotions and improving my communication skills. To this day I still perform in choir and I love Broadway shows, anime, Miyazaki, and Star Wars. Using the performance skills I learned in my music theater classes, I now advocate for adults and children with special needs/disabilities. (So sorry for the long comment) but long story short: Even though I did not get the chance to see Pokémon Live! in its original run, I did some reminiscing during this pandemic and I realized how much this show (indirectly) helped me mature into the person I am to this today. Coming across the soundtrack, learning about the show online and watching the original upload from Chris Mitchell during Spring Break of 2012 changed my life and helped me find the confidence inside me that I never knew I had. Thank you so much for saving this show and to everyone who was involved in this production thank you from the bottom of my heart for being a part of that push that helped me become who I am today. 😊❤

It’s definitely the original actor for Misty, where as the understudy saw spotlights in the performance Chris Mitchell filmed and posted. I didn't live close enough to a town where this was being played, so I thought I would never see this ever, until I found some people who recorded and posted this on RUclips. I'm forever grateful. I didn't manage to buy the MechaMewTwo cards that were passed out at the event though. As a kid, I would have loved the spontanious singing, but now I wish they would skip the songs and just continue with the story. I love the show anyway, I just wish they put this story in the anime to make to really awesome. I don't care how bad people said it was. With 3rd Movie being Ash and Pikachu's first anniversary I figured Kanto took half a year and Orange Islands was the other.
I remember Ash saying "it's been a whole year since we were last here" around the end of season 1, just before the leaguer where he placed 16th
Now that’s some continuity explaining to do, unless the anime just happen to be a slow time period.
I am forever kicking myself that I never saw this when I was a kid. 😔
The show wasn't bad actually. I must say, I liked the performances and the musical numbers. This really should've been released in some way before being forgotten.

I grew up with Pokemon,but I didn't learn about this underrated event until recently.
This was incredibly unique and fascinating, for a stage play adaptation of Pokemon.
I'm just a little sad that it never came to St.Louis.
My bros and I would loved to see this at Fox or at Powell as kids.
I remember going to see this. I had a blast. Again I was 19/20.
This feels so much like watching an episode of the 4Kids dub of "Pokémon". It's got that same charm. (Probably because 4Kids actually co-produced this show. They even had a few of their voice actors in the cast, such as Andrew Rannells (Morty) as James and Darren Dunstan (Stephen and Barrett) as Giovanni.
And even though they just reused existing Pikachu vocal effects, Pikachu's voice actress Ikue Ohtani came to view one of the dress rehearsals.

This show was awesome, thank you for uploading this. My research shows there were never any performances in LA but I like to think my parents would have took me and my sister if there was. They actually liked Pokemon a bit too.
It's sad how we things have changed since then. We all grew up and face adult hardships. Ash split from Brock and Misty and isn't someone we follow anymore.
Everything changes.

What a great production. I think it holds up even today. Seeing the children's faces at the end made it clear it was all worth it.
Coming back to watch this masterpiece of a musical in 2024 brings a lot of nostalgia, the fact that this was in 2001 [a year before I came into the world in 2002] is awesome.

Atlanta: Thanksgiving
Grand Rapids: Halloween
Milwaukee: NYE
My uncle would take me and my brother every year. They were so fun to attend and it was a great experience. The snacks were over priced but my uncle still bought them. Also, you could meet some of the actors after the show for a small fee. My uncle would only take us every year if we agreed to shower with him and let him use our hands to play with himself. So we went for 3-4 years straight

Was I the only one who brought a camera even though it said it wasn’t allowed. I took about 10 pictures. The camera still is in my basement. The bad thing is that I can’t transfer it to my computer
i didn't go but you can see the latin American version of the play in Mexico. The script is the same and the are interviews with the kids that went to see it outside of the teather

Sir I cant thank you enough for restoring this (to me) important piece of pokemon media. As a fan, out of all of them, this is peak pokemon mania media right here. I just can't stop being obsessed about this. It feels like being a fan around this time and watching it in person. The excitement is real here. Oh how much I hope for this to return in the future someday. Glad we still have this saved, thanks a bunch!

Darren Dunstan is a former 4kids voice actor and director.
He even got to voice Giovanni in some episodes of the show when Ted Lewis was on a hiatus.
@@mitchfletcher2386 no Ted left when 4kids lost the rights to Pokémon. Craig Blair took over as Giovanni in The first season of Diamond and Pearl. Then from the next season and on Giovanni is currently voiced by Ted Lewis.

I didn’t even know there was a Pokémon live back then, because I’m not sure if I ever saw the commercial, but I wish it wasn’t a failure and I wish it did get released on video or DVD, because Misty’s Song is my favorite musical number. It’s beautiful, and I wish they would revive the musical or do a sequel that takes place after the events, even if it means recasting all the characters since all the original actors are too old by now.
I will always come back to watch this at least once a year

Might comment some things I noticed during the show, will edit if I notice anything new because I'm a huge nerd for this show now.
At 29:39 in the song "Best Friends" for Brock's solo, it sounds like they dubbed in his part from the cast recording album. Maybe in that specific show the actor was having an off-day with his voice.
If you listen really closely at 1:29:26 it sounds like you can hear the actor for Ash drop the f-bomb backstage, his mic was not fully off I suppose. It sounds like something along the lines of, "The shouting is f-ing rude." Which makes sense since throughout that whole scene the crowd was shouting/booing through all of their lines.
I just like Professor Oak’s funny dance at 1:40:51 Patrick seemed to have an absolute blast playing this character and I love the choices he put on him, is it weird to say Giovanni and Oak are dream roles for me now?

You know, although the idea is ridiculous, and there's some cheese to be had, this play is actually pretty solid! I mean, it's not gonna set your world on fire, but it's entertaining and the live actors were having fun. Also, "It Will All Be Mine" is an awesome song and I will fight anyone who says otherwise.
I saw this live as a child and the only thing I remember is Mecha mew2 exploding and saving the confetti that rained down.

The sprinklers are part of the gym and Brock’s Pokémon both got knocked out. Ash won that fairly.
Plus Ash was winning the battle against Misty. It got interrupted but it’s clear Ash was going to win.

Darren Dustin being Giovanni and putting on that voice makes me think Pegasus from Yugioh
Giovanni is played by a young Darren Dunstain, the actor who would go on to play Pegasus in Yugioh. Bakura's voice actor played Giovanni on the anime.
In other words, bith of Yugioh's season 1 villains played Giovanni
