14 bolt is superior to D70. A d70 is d80 outer with a d60 inner. Pinion bearing support on the Corp 14 is very strong d70s are known to have pinion failure. D80 is king, rated higher than the new AAM 14.
It was therapeutic to watch the rust removal, looking at the press pressing those bolts in, adding new parts and watching things come together like a puzzle.
One of my favorite episodes. Everyone should know how to do brakes and rotors. Maybe not axel swaps but nice way to get to see all the parts and how they work together without looking in a small area etc. love it. Also I bought a T-shirt from the merch store and it is the softest. Nice work.
LT there is a guy on eBay that makes big red knobs that he 3D prints for the release on the harbor freight presses, you just got to know what type of “t” you have one has a roll pin amd the other is solid. They are cheap and mine has held up great.... it just saves the extra step of grabbing pliers to release the jack. Hope this helps
Just a heads up. I appreciate your talk alongs. I work with these tutorials in the background so the music and work along videos are less helpful for me then the dialogue. On the planning phase of my second gmt400 build up. I have a flawless California suburban for this build up!
Very good video. Thanks LT. I see your old partner is on "Car Fix" now. You both deserve recognition for being the best in the business. Keep up the informative format.
My hearing is toast. I had a 410 shotgun go off in a car with the barrel next to my left ear when I was 18. I never wore any PPE when I was young. I worked with powdered asbestos until they discovered it's hazards. Hearing aids help my hearing and so far I've suffered no ill effects from the asbestos. I'm soon 71. Dr's tell me not to worry as anything would have shown up by now. I do wear hearing protection and eye protection now. Haven't been good about wearing a respirator.
I always use Never-seez or similar on the threads of every fastener and mating surface I install on my vehicles. Where they spread salt by the ton, it is essential.
You mentioned people saying you talk too much? Weird, but one suggestion might be to just take the audio and put it where you have the music @ 13:18 and do it as a voiceover. Not sure, I think your stuff is good. Keep it up!
Looking at the way the D70 ebrake cables load into the rear of the axle.....if the Tahoe’s originals load from the front, you may have to swap the caliper mounts from side to side.
You are doing good stuff, a nice balance of explanation and hands on demonstration. One request, can you title the videos to make it easier to follow builds. Like the title of this video - no way to tell it is part of the suburban build. But other videos are titled great like "Jeep XJ LS Engine Swap Pt.5." Just asking you to make it easier to follow an individual build.
I use playlists to try and keep builds the organized in sequence, but the reason I don't use Part 3 and so forth on the video title is so they are more searchable by individual topic, which can help new viewers find the channel
Great quality content only criticism would be the music is to loud compared to your voice. other than great great work great information and great video. Will definitely keep coming back.
My dad got his first one ton and it occurred to him that someone could steal your axles leaving you stranded, if you have a 2wd. Pretty funny prank that would be.
It won't hurt. If you don't have one, get a Tiger Torch (Sometimes called a weed burner) for preheat. It will cast a large hot spot and preheat that housing in no time. 250°F will be plenty. If you don't have any means of measuring the temperature just drip some water (droplets) on it. When it boils your over 212°F. Its wise to check 3" each side of the weld centerline. That axle tube is a little on the thin side. If you can stand it up vertical and weld 1/4 of the distance around the tube, stop, then quickly weld 1/4 of the tube directly across from the first spot. Check your preheat again and finish the weld.
I think the project is awesome. However, I'd never reuse wheel or mounting studs. Years of fatigue might go unnoticed, and it could fail. New parts are cheap insurance IMO.
I see what you mean, but you got eight lugs wheels and the backing plate mounting studs are really over sized and probably was factory torqued...very unlikely to cause any issues.
Is there any reason you couldnt use an AAM axle to do this swap as well? I have a k2500 crew cab, looking to swap to rear disk and fix the stance. Dont necessarily care what axle replaces it.
LT. I'm looking at just swapping the brakes onto my '95 14bolt. Do you think its doable without much fuss? Meaning, I don't own a welder but I have a full toolbox. Thank you!
LT, I'm wondering if you could of used a Dana 70 out of a 2003 Dodge Ram 2500? The only reason I'm saying is I have that truck. It has 4.10's and limited slip, and disc brakes already. The shocks are staggered like GM. The spring pads might be different, but maybe you should look for one in the south. Hardly any rust.😎
man's started the video with some FIFA21 cocaine music. i'm here for it Edit. Bro who's saying you talk too much? @ them for me, i need to talk to them.
Come on LT, real men don't wear gloves. We spend 2 hours using the wire brush on the drill and 4 hours digging the little metal splinters out of our hands that night. Now as an old man is always wear safety equipment and warn the young ones. Metal rods in back, fused neck and fused ankle.lol. should've listened to the old man instead of being stubborn "real man". ALWAYS USE SAFETY EQUIPMENT! Even if it takes 5 minutes to put it on to do a 3 minute job.5 minutes can save you from lifetime of pain. Life will catch up with you.
I find myself fast forwarding through LT's videos because of all the talking that is done. I am sure some people like to hear what LT is saying but I am not one of those people. I love the content but would be better with a little less talking. Sorry LT if I sound like a ahole.
I've already got the 14 bolt pulled out, and the Dana 70 is about to go in! Stay tuned guys, the stance is gonna look so much better than stock!
Can't wait to see the video! The suburban will look great!!
I'm about to grabbing the same axles for a cj7 Swap...
With which axle you guys recommend me to match the front???
shouldnt there be a few th clearence on the rear hub bearings, for heat expansion..

also, Vice Grip Garage would probably approve of your handle in the press. ;) lol
We need to help you break 50k subscribers. This content is way better than some so called "cartubers" who never bend a wrench.

199👍's up LT thanks for taking us all along with you for the great build
believe it's 23 to 28 pounds of preload on those bearings
Hell , I never worn a respirator after 35 years on the pipeline welding ,too hard to light my cigarettes . Nice project , thanks for sharing 🤔👍👍🦅🇺🇲❤️
yeah, I can see how that would get in the way

Awesome video! Love dana70! Great video! Many thumbs up!
Get a strong fan for the door to keep that dust blowing out. I put a blue shop towel before the n95 filter. Saves the filter, easy to change.
I’m looking forward to seeing this axle under the suburban. Great video, LT!
You and me both!
LT your lengthy explanations are great for viewers like me who don't know shitm thanks!
Glad to help
Awesome vid LT. Keep them coming.
Thanks! Will do!
Looking good L.T.👍👍
Welding the axle tubes to the center carrier is a great mod and a little known fact… the center carrier is cast ‘steel’ and therefore weld compatible.
Another great video its dope to see you in your element and showing us all the how to
I appreciate that!
I for one enjoy the talking, a lot of people may already know whats going on. I sure don't - so its nice to hear what the plan is.

The c3500hd trucks have large disk brakes I believe the hydra boost and master cylinder would be a direct bolt in.
That’s a huge axel
That's what she DID say.
Looks good, should be a nice upgrade
Amazing work!
So cool!
What I would like to see is my 04 gmc with a 4.8 and 3500 swapped with a 6.0 - 6.2 ? and a t56
Good show, LT!

I noticed the same thing. I thought he was putting them on the wrong sides myself.
the plan is to use later model E brake cable ends that go in from the rear, since the drum brake parking cables wont attach correctly anyhow

The sooner a person starts wearing PPE, the longer a person can turn wrenches. LEARN IT. LIVE IT. LOVE IT! No, I don't work for OSHA.
I also could send you any pictures you may need but it is the same setup and and barcode and tag on the rear end

Looks like it's time for a new work bench.
My dad got his first one ton and it occurred to him that someone could steal your axles leaving you stranded, if you have a 2wd. Pretty funny prank that would be.
Is there any risk of warping the axle tubes while welding to the housing?
Can you explain the process of mig welding the tubes to the diff housing? Did you pre and post heat? I’m getting ready to do this on an 8.8.

Have you considered electrolysis rust removal
Is the 4 bolt flange on the Dana 70 and the 14 bolt the same? Like could you put the Dana 70's disc brakes on the 14bolt?
nice work looks like new now lol

I could’ve, but I think the center hub bore for the whee is larger which means I couldn’t use my GM wheels
@@LawrenceTolman that I didn't know. Interesting
It didn't look like you put much grease in the wheel bearing
no, it gets lubed by the gear oil that you put in the differential
When welding the tubes to the center section did you heat the casting or do you find it to not be necessary?
it would probably be a better idea from a metallurgical standpoint, but it seemed to accept the weld just fine without any pre heating
I dust fusty crap with WD-40 to help keep the airborne particles to a minimum. Plus wear 3M PPE
thats a good idea
Is there a big difference between the gmt800’s 6 lug 10 bolt and 14 bolt differentials?
yeah, there is. The 6 lug 14 bolt is a 9.5" ring gear, and its much stronger than the 8.5
did i miss you sealing the axel to hub?? or do those have an o ring??
theres just a small gasket on the backside of the axle flange to seal it up
Safety Glasses!!!!
I posted this even before getting to you talking about it.
No rtv on axle shaft?
its got a gasket on the backside of the flange... if it does leak we'll just pull an axle and put some silicone on it
You make the press?
nope, just a second hand harbor freight press that was missing the handle when I got it
What is "OBS"? I see it before Suburban and don't know what it is.
Old Body Style
I'm about to grabbing the same axles for a cj7 Swap...

someone on here said a Kingpin Dana 60 (1978-1979 F250 was within an inch of this width, but I cant confirm that.
