  • here are my take-home points of what I learned at the Django in June Gypsy jazz camp, held at Smith College in Northhampton Massachusetts - 2022 - from the newbie violinist/Fiddler perspective - coming at this as someone who’s only played violin for 10 years and played only simple Appalachian old-time tunes (1-4-5) and rag time (with only slightly more chord changes) before starting to think about jazz a year ago.
My neck was injured so i could not fiddle, but i observed a ton and used my voice for some class exercises. (sample included) i learned to listen to guitar solos, and finally understood from listening to other students what teachers mean when they say jazz fiddlers should breath between musical phrases - most students don’t ;)
prior to this week I only took a dozen or so ONLINE lessons with several teachers, never getting a chance to see gypsy jazz - manouche jams or teachers in person. Teachers at camp included Tim Kliphuis, Aaron Weinstein (who taught the full day pre camp workshop), Evan Price.
It was great, albeit challenging for someone who is immunocompromised and wants all classmates indoors to mask. Although most did so, folks got lax with precautions a couple days in. most indoor jams were unmasked. fingers crossed I made it through uninfected. would be a good test of my precautions skills.
in this video i share a fraction of what i learned while walking through a vermont forest

@@MissMoonshineDance I play guitar and piano, boogie woogie and my own odd jams , but just discovered traditional fiddle a few weeks ago, via Tara Nevins and Jeb P?, Molsky, etc. First saw you dancing very nicely with the Savoys, and that type of cajun music I sought out after watching 80s movie Southern Comfort, featuring the Balfa Bros. ---amazing syncopation when the accordion comes in (in the movie, not the album) . Good movie, btw. .. Also btw, hope your injury is better!

      @@ijohnny. I think for sharing. I don’t know that I danced with a Savoy, did I?

@@MissMoonshineDance Oh sorry!, the one I was thinking of was Indian On a Stump, with you, and I conflated that with the Savoy band, both performances having been discovered around the same day.

I'm glad you attended in spite of the neck injury. I think that you are right about gaining another perspective without your instrument to play. I also deal with arthritis and had a debilitating episode years ago with my neck, which has quieted down. Hoping yours will do the same.

wow, a fellow sufferer. arthritis in neck doesn’t go away so plz keep the chin tucks going to assure there is no future flare- and shoulder blades together and downward when at the computer ;). every year my episodes get worse but i forget to rehab in winter and by spring it’s back

@@MissMoonshineDance Good information. Thanks, Miss Moonshine! MRI "said" it was arthritis (in my neck), but thankfully, for whatever reason, it has never been as bad as that one episode several years ago. Now, if I can just get my knees working again! Glad you have a way to ease that pain and I appreciate you sharing what has helped you. I love your channel, Miss Moonshine! Watching from Kennesaw. :) Kisses to Mr. B!

Sorry to hear about your injury. Coincidentally, I recently , through criminal in attention while working with a sharp tool, stabbed the side of my left thumb to the bone. I’m sidelined. I’ll need to make a prosthetic to play. It would have been a perfect time to attend that camp ,free from performance anxiety.
    Heal soon.
Too many notes can be compared to blathering when speaking. If I can keep it simple, playing in tune and on time I consider it a success.

SO sorry to learn of your neck injury! You've been dealing with it gracefully. Also sorry to hear that you are immunocompromised; my sister lives with lupus, so I care a great deal about people who must cope with that situation. Enjoyed your commentary, and the English major part of me loved your reference to "punctuation" in music; the poet part of me reveled in your comments about using silence. . . allowing time to savor a note, a phrase, a measure. Hang in there, Lady.

    Sorry about your "injury" 😥
Your live video featured a guitar player / right of the accordion, who's guitar sounded like Willie Nelsons "Trigger".
Then in this video you was talking about "out of tempo" melody, ol' Willie is famous for.
Plus, I believe he does a cover of
    "All of Me".
    Just a 2 in a Row coincidence.
    Get Well Soon 🙂

Hey moonshine, I just came back from guitar camp where I was hosting a Django djam ever day. I hope to go to Django in June next year. Been playing gypsy for about 5 years now.. We Meet every Wednesday in macon and when you get better, you should come jam with us in gypsy jazz. It's hard to find Django djam groups to play with. I'm fortunate to have this one in macon.
