There is much truth in that. I like to compare landscape photography with fly fishing in wild creeks: Sometimes you’re out there and don’t catch a thing. That’s life.
No need to apologize! Excellent content here. Growing photographers need to see this. This is a good, honest, down-to-earth reality of photography. I've often said to many; photography is 99% effort, originality, perspiration, and planning. And just 1% pressing the shutter button.
Not a rubbish day and not a rubbish video. It was great to see you out with such a positive frame of mind and you still managed to capture a couple of super images. Sharing the reality - some days are better than others - is a most important lesson for us all. Thanks for posting, Henry.
I can't speak for everyone, but I follow you for 60% of the incredible photography and guidance. The rest is all you mate. Your dedication, love and enthusiasm for what you are doing with your life and how you go about it. The photos you did share were fantastic by the way. I'm not dissapointed in the slightest with this video. In fact It's encouraging for those of us struggling with the basics to see a pro feel the hardship of dissapointment. Granted yours was weather related and not skill based, but still. Much love Henry. Keep doing you.
No apologies necessary Henry as you have shown the very real side of landscape photography in that not every day is going to be an epic day. I would say that days like this are good in that when you do get a really good day then you appreciate the conditions you are experiencing. The first image was still a lovely image and definitely worth showing regardless of how the rest of the hike panned out
Personally I like to see all sorts of videos including failures.. I watch because I enjoy your enthusiasm and realism, and obviously for the photographs, locations and the excellent production and story telling.. But whether you have a fail or an amazing day, they are all interesting in their own ways to me..
the loneliness of the long distance runner, the weather issues of the landscape photographer, two literary classics methinks. Thanks for showing us a "DUFF" day Henry, in a way doing so gives us hope that when it happens to us, we can face it like you did, turn around, and try again another day. while watching I knew there was an old song that sort of fits this video, I had to google the lyrics to be sure but from The Carpenters (there goes my cred' as a dyed in the wool rocker!!!) Hangin' around Nothin' to do but frown Rainy days and Mondays always get me down on a separate note. nice to see the new shoes are still radio active bright in their glow. We AIN'T gonna lose H.T. even in the fog in those beauties
Not a failure at all Henry. I saw some great views and a couple of nice photographs. Thanks again for the content and showing the cold hard truth about our passion.
You cannot be more correct about just getting out there and going to places for the photos! Motivation and action are first and foremost! I have been lack luster in this as of late. Beautiful day! I love gloom and mood, add in the scenery around you and you have a twirly bird! Golly, Lovely scenery! Have experienced a day like this many times. Enjoyed the video, Henry! Cheers!!!! A cup of hot chocolate will fix it! 😉
Most of my photographic days out are like this! It can be bright sunshine in the morning but, by the time I get where I'm headed, the rain and gloom set in and there's no light to speak of. However, if every day was perfect, that would end up being a real drag. The unpredictable weather keeps us on our toes so when it does all go right, it's something really special. Well done, Henry for making a go of it and having a good time despite conditions, and thanks for an entertaining video. Cheers.
You bagged a couple of epic photos on the way up plus you made a video full of useful content as always. No way is this a failure. Thankyou for being such an inspiration.
That beautiful soft light 'gloomy goodness' composition (at 8:34), and you think the trip was a 'failure'? I don't think so. This was one of your best photographer-inspiring videos yet!
That was no rubbish day! Not least because of the 2 stunning gorgeous shots. I think this is one of my faves of your videos. This is how it often is, and seeing your reaction and attitude is [as ever] extremely motivating. The video also contains some really great advice about increasing the chances of getting good shots by making the effort and putting yourself in a potentially fruitful place at potentially good times. This is so important - for experienced as well as beginner photographers. At one level this is simple - but at another level more profound. It's simple to say it - or agree with someone who says it - but to really take it on board and act on it - to make this an ingrained part of your behaviour - requires a deeper appreciation of its wisdom. It also requires accepting that things may not work out since the creative combination of location and timing is only potential, and may not deliver. But even when it doesn't, your general advice of working with what you are given and taking advantage of the unanticipated comes into play. In this case resulting in those 2 great shots! And a great video! Bring on the gloomy goodness!
I went out to a local waterfall yesterday, we had 50mm of rain, i was told it was really coming down. Get there and its just a trickle, so I took photos anyway, got a nice one of a gum tree against the wet rocks with a bit of a reflection in the water. But I still learnt things like not to leave my other lenses home haha. No not a failure Henry, I'm glad you made those points, its people like you that keep me going on wild goose chases for photos. And I'm lucky too, I live in a great part of Australia.
I’m sorry things didn’t work out, but frustrating days are part of landscape photography. I hope you return and try again because I would love to see that landscape blanketed in snow.
I like all of your videos, Henry. I like them for several reasons, but one important one has to do with your genuine appraisal of how it is, even on days that are not so good for photography. Thanks for posting this one too.
Looking at that first "vista" I had my doubts but you proved me wrong; an absolutely cracking photo so far from a "rubbish day". And the video served as a good lesson; it might be nice and comfortable in bed but you don't stand any chance at all of getting any good shots! Cheers.
Love your advice about putting yourself in the location/making the effort - the last 4 Wednesdays I've been up at 6am to catch sunrises and only today after a walk to the top of Pendle did i get anything approaching a sunrise. Failure is not an option - it's a learning experience, I call them scouting trips if Mrs Z asks!
Thanks for sharing...no such thing as failure... maybe disappointed but interesting day ... great pics & always enjoy your videos... keep up the good work Henry... cheers 😀
I am making a 8 hr trip up there on Saturday for a week well worth the effort my fist time .by you videos it won’t be my last .thanks for the inspiration Mr T .
I know exactly what you mean. I always thumbs up as I open your videos. My sister will love your calendar. Raised next to San Bruno Mountain, it just gets more grey as you get to the top when the Marine Layer Fog rolls in daily. I will look to your winter snow trip. Aside: here in Minnesota I had my first snow flakes...Yay!!! Crack On!
🇨🇦/🇺🇸... Hey there Henry!!! Here's one thing... If I were there WITHOUT a camera, I think I would certainly enjoy the hike, enjoy the freshness of it all, enjoy all that fog (I don't get it often, where I live), enjoy the hilliness (again, I live in FLAT lower Michigan). There's a LOT to enjoy. HOWEVER, I know what you mean. Also... I have to find TIME-to-make-an-effort to get to someplace I WANT to photograph. I'm "stuck" workin' 9-5 and it's dark after work. Cheers bro!!! Thanks for your vidz, as always!!! :-) (PS... getting closer to the time to put your calendar up! 😄
Certainly another great day out for me and loved the first "gloomy goodness" shot. When you have made the effort to get to a location like you do, then that in itself makes the day worthwhile and no way could it be then considered a rubbish day out whatever happens. I am sure us begginers wish we were half as good as you are on one of your so called rubbish days. Keep it going Henry, its all thumbs up and top drawer for me.
I climbed Harter fell this spring from Dunnerdale, it does have stunning views. Also on the way home stopped at Stickle pike and Caw, not Wainwright's but so beautiful. Well worth a visit too
Honestly, while I came for the photography, I find myself realizing that I would stay even if you would completely change the channel's topic. You content is always relaxing and uplifting, even if you're "complaining", love it! 👍
Myself living on the edge of the National Park of Lakeland, this I would conceder my local Park, I might just manage to get a half decent photo in my local Park Henry. All the best and keep yourself safe ol'lad.
British weather! Both photos 👍. I didn't know that Haweswater is a reservoir. Isn't that where Beatrix Potter's squirrels paddled across on rafts?! Anyway it just goes to show it is possible to be a success on murky days. As the saying goes, there's no such thing as bad weather, just the wrong clothing! Take care Henry. 🍺
Not a failure at all, we all have days that are not what we hoped for (in fact most are like that). We still learn something on those days and I thought the gate shot was a ripper.
I think I'd have pointed the camera towards the scenery we see at 5:13 . With a low-key exposure, possibly monochrome, with sepia tint,it would look great.
Great video Henry, it shows us exactly the effort you put in to making them, keep them coming, really nice to meet you last Tuesday near Chesters, i felt a little awkward talking, so kept it short as i think you were on a one to one.
I don't think it was a failure, maybe it's good to not only show the good days on RUclips, but also days like this. And you can always go there another time!
I know you mean failed as in not making it to the summit, but with the two glorious images you got, I consider it a win. I enjoyed the video and yes, I made it to the end, so neither was it rubbish.
Ha, ha. Just marked this day in my calender : "English guy apologizes about bad weather...." That's definitely a keeper ;-) Excellent video with two amazing photos. THX.
Hi Henry Well I loved the couple of photos you got on the way. When I went in horrible wether I thought it was rubbish but managed to get some great photos. Always find something to take no matter what. Good video always nice to see you in the great outdoors no matter what. loved it.
Henry i really do not think you can call this day a failure. After all you took some darned good photos: i loved the 'fringe' of trees along the bottom of the frame with lighter patches in the middle. Then, onto the gorgeous moody clouds.. The second image was good too, though i would have opened the gate - as an invitation to go through.. Beautiful colours and, as usual, great depth.. this is my second comment, the first has vanished.. i have no idea why some of my comments are taken down. i never write anything derogatory.. 😕
Great video... I decided to stop buying gear for a year and spend that money on going places.... worth every penny!! It does take effort and its worth every bit (mostly) :-)
I'm glad you posted anyway. Keeps it real and that's why we watch! It makes us not feel so bad when we get stuck in bad conditions! I thought you did great with the shot at 9:40 considering the weather you were faced with.
Always happy to see that I'm not the only one who sometimes just looks around and thinks, what's the point today? There's no view, I can't see the route I can't see a photo, I'm going home
There's no shame in turning back, Henry. The Fells aren't going anywhere despite the best efforts of the weather to wash them all into the Irish Sea. I wish you better weather next time.
Don't be so hard on yourself. The video made an important point that landscape photographers are at the mercy of the elements. Its important to know when to stop and return another day.

Given you a thumbs up for the effort Henry and also for the display of common sense - I've been there many, many times and like you say, it happens. It's always there for next time. :-)
This was far from a failure! Just the reality of a photographer’s life!
Cheers!!

One word to summarize this video Appreciate your integrity !
Happy to see that you are normal too and show us your shitty days. And not only your successes.
As usual, well done
Not a rubbish day and not a rubbish video. It was great to see you out with such a positive frame of mind and you still managed to capture a couple of super images. Sharing the reality - some days are better than others - is a most important lesson for us all. Thanks for posting, Henry.
Be happy always , because nature loves you more
Hi Henry. No need to apologise mate, you can`t control the weather. You still took a couple of cracking photos for us all to enjoy. 🙂
Not rubbish. To be honest, I enjoy all aspects of your videos. You attitude is refreshing. Images are spectacular.
We all have those days. Just being out in such a wonderful place is enough though. Photos or no photos.
I can't speak for everyone, but I follow you for 60% of the incredible photography and guidance. The rest is all you mate. Your dedication, love and enthusiasm for what you are doing with your life and how you go about it. The photos you did share were fantastic by the way. Don´t be sad Henry. I love your RUclips film´s. Watching them is 100% joy and learning.
No apologies necessary Henry as you have shown the very real side of landscape photography in that not every day is going to be an epic day. Loved the gate picture 📷
Not a failure at all Henry. I saw some great views and a couple of nice photographs. Thanks again for the content and showing the cold hard truth about our passion.
Definitely have to wait for another day to complete your 30th Wainwright.
Stay safe Henry 🇦🇺

Hot chocolate fixes it all!
Nice to see country with no people about. Love hikes like that.
My old mountaineering mentor used to say "In the hills, you only fail if you die!" By that standard it was a total success! :-)
Most of my photographic days out are like this! It can be bright sunshine in the morning but, by the time I get where I'm headed, the rain and gloom set in and there's no light to speak of. Even your fails look good
You just experienced my typical day in the art of landscape photography..
You bagged a couple of epic photos on the way up plus you made a video full of useful content as always. No way is this a failure. Thankyou for being such an inspiration.
Far from being rubbish! Loved the hike and the shots you shared. As someone who lives in a desert area, I'd love a hike in the fog.

Love the reality. Keep keeping it real. On to the next adventure…
Head in the clouds can yield terrific stuff. It’s OK to ruminate - just not in public 😁.
I've had many a day like this in the lakes. I just go find a nice pub with a roaring fire & have some nice scoff. Thanks for posting Mate.
I went out to a local waterfall yesterday, we had 50mm of rain, i was told it was really coming down. Get there and its just a trickle, so I took photos anyway, got a nice one of a gum tree against the wet rocks with a bit of a reflection in the water. Reality photography, love it! Not every trip can be perfect. Makes me feel better. 😅
It took us four attempts to get Haystacks on a clear day and one of those times we turned back…it’s nice to know we’re in good company 😊
Bad luck mate! But you’ve got the right attitude, one that I need to adopt more. Thanks for sharing!
I'd happily put in that effort for the picture you did get. Thanks for for sharing the video.
I’m sorry things didn’t work out, but frustrating days are part of landscape photography. I hope you return and try again because I would love to see that landscape blanketed in snow.
So beautiful natural colors / shades in your pictures, a pleasure to follow you
I like all of your videos, Henry. I like them for several reasons, but one important one has to do with your genuine appraisal of how it is, even on days that are not so good for photography. Thanks for posting this one too.

Great attitude. Totally agree with the sentiments
Yep ~ get it & it happens a lot > weather here has been worst I can remember. But as you say it’s still a good walk😉
Great advice near the start, get out there. I've always been told "You miss 100% of the shots you don't take." Keep up the good work.
Great video Henry, no need to apologise! Love your videos and your enthusiasm.
Not a rubbish video at as we all have days like those, and you still have captured lovely images thanks Henry looking forward to the next venture 👍
Thanks 👍
Excellent video and love that first photo.
Thanks for sharing...no such thing as failure... maybe disappointed but interesting day ... great pics & always enjoy your videos... keep up the good work Henry... cheers 😀
I've been there many Times Henry, it happens don't beat yourself up, still a great video 😂
Loved the shot of the gate and the clouds ;)
I am making a 8 hr trip up there on Saturday for a week well worth the effort my fist time .by you videos it won’t be my last .thanks for the inspiration Mr T .
It had to happen ,you have had a good run, onwards and upwards 😀
Fairplay Henry good call as you said even from a hiking perspective I hope you,d a good cuppa when you got home !! all the best
Thanks 👍
I know exactly what you mean. I always thumbs up as I open your videos. My sister will love your calendar. not rubbish! just reality. wish I had your enthusiasm and legs but at 72 hiking fells is in the past
Always worthy of a thumbs up. You’re such an artist. Thank you as always.
Thank you so much 😀
Nice one Henry as usual, a couple of cracking shots, no apologies needed
I climbed Harter fell this spring from Dunnerdale, it does have stunning views. Also on the way home stopped at Stickle pike and Caw, not Wainwright's but so beautiful. Well worth a visit too
Mate, as someone who only really gets out on a Saturday, most of my trips are a disappointment...but I still love just taking photos, thanks
Honestly, while I came for the photography, I find myself realizing that I would stay even if you would completely change the channel's topic. You content is always relaxing and uplifting, even if you're "complaining", love it! 👍
Thanks Henry loved it anyway, pretty photos,
Thank you 👍📷😎
Myself living on the edge of the National Park of Lakeland, this I would conceder my local Park, I might just manage to get a half decent photo in my local Park Henry. All the best and keep yourself safe ol'lad.
These things happen ! Move on to the next adventure it was fun while it lasted 👍🏻
You still turned out a couple of stunning images that I would have been proud to take. Glad you still showed the video, we all get days like this.
British weather! Both photos 👍. I didn't know that Haweswater is a reservoir. Isn't that where Beatrix Potter's squirrels paddled across on rafts?! I love Eskdale, such a beautiful area. Thanks mate!
Not a failure at all, we all have days that are not what we hoped for (in fact most are like that). We still learn something on those days and I thought the gate shot was a ripper.
appreciate your honesty mate great work
Enjoyed the video. Some nice shots despite the weather. 👍
Thanks 👍
Enjoyed that video mate, keep trucking...
Not awkward at all mate absolute pleasure - always very humbling! Hope you enjoyed Honister Pass 👍
Still got some nice photos mate , it wasnt rubbish at all , still enjoyed it
Good job, thank you again
Nice images Henry.
I don't think it was a failure, maybe it's good to not only show the good days on RUclips, but also days like this. And you can always go there another time!
As previously mentioned, this is the reality of landscape photography and it’s great that you share the high’s and the low’s..
Loving your work 👌🏾
I know you mean failed as in not making it to the summit, but with the two glorious images you got, I consider it a win. I enjoyed the video and yes, I made it to the end, so neither was it rubbish.

Hi Henry Well I loved the couple of photos you got on the way. When I went in horrible wether I thought it was rubbish but managed to get some great photos. Always find something to take no matter what. Good video always nice to see you in the great outdoors no matter what. loved it.
My Misses said "fancy going out in that weather, he must be a nutter" of course I disagreed it's called atmospheric conditions!
Keeping it real Henry, one of the reasons we all watch your channel mate. Loved the 1st image, fall colours and moody, what more can we ask for.
Thanks 👍
Henry i really do not think you can call this day a failure. After all you took some darned good photos:
i loved the 'fringe' of trees along the bottom of the frame with lighter patches in the middle.
Many thanks Jorlam. Yes, apologies for that it seems the YT algorithm enjoys taking perfectly fine comments down!
Enjoyed the video. We all have our bad days, but I always tell myself at least I got out, that's always something. Nice shot at the beginning there.
Great vlog once again.... still say your enthusiasm and commitment is inspiring - keep them coming!
Great video... I decided to stop buying gear for a year and spend that money on going places.... worth every penny!! It does take effort and its worth every bit (mostly) :-)
Lovely images Henry :-)
Many thanks!
@@HenryTurnerphoto Welcome
I'm glad you posted anyway. Keeps it real and that's why we watch! It makes us not feel so bad when we get stuck in bad conditions! I thought you did great with the shot at 9:40 considering the weather you were faced with.
No failure when you got two nice pictures in the bag.
Always happy to see that I'm not the only one who sometimes just looks around and thinks, what's the point today? There's no view, I can't see the route I can't see a photo, I'm going home
Given you the thumbs up for effort and still sounding happy!
Much appreciated!
There's no shame in turning back, Henry. The Fells aren't going anywhere despite the best efforts of the weather to wash them all into the Irish Sea. I wish you better weather next time.
Wise choice to save the peak for a day with a view. Thank you for sharing Henry.
Just returned from a similar day cycling in Shropshire. Photographed lone treesin the fog. Great Autumn colours but so dark!
Don't be so hard on yourself. The video made an important point that landscape photographers are at the mercy of the elements. Its important to know when to stop and return another day.
As you said early in the video if you don't get out you have no chances. You got out, it didn't work out but you tried you gave yourself a chance just the condition this time didn't turn in your favour. Next time it may turn to your favour and that is photography especially landscape.
