Mangini has been good for him, but also he's singing with such great maturity these last few years especially, really playing to his strengths. There's been some really fantastic performances.
@Bruce Tonet - It's a matter of context. At what point during this 24 minute performance would you say that he fails? If you can point out any real fails then i can't help you. Does he steal the show? No. That's not the point. This isn't 1993 anymore, it's not 2004 anymore ... frankly, it's not even 2011 anymore. James is 53, and maturity means knowing where he's at and what he's capable of doing, and maximising those strengths. He hits the notes clean and sells them with a pretty solid degree of emotional intent. He shines when it's his time in the spotlight, and blends well with the song otherwise. He never once tries to do too much. He never once exhales in defeat. It's striking at times, although the bands intensity is stronger at times than others. I would think that this is an excellent example of what you could hope for from any metal/prog band playing a 25 year old song. I mean shit, you think Geddy could sing 2112 post 2000? He couldn't sing it in 1990, and not even really quite the same in 1980. You won't ever hear this like live 1995. Amazing is a particular word... Amazing is ACOS Limelight 1993. I think if we had every performance of this song on tour so far available at such a high audio quality level or better still (and that's relevant), you'd find better overall performances, but i can't in my right mind sit here and feel cheated by this at all. The band delivers.
My favorite as well and at 12:50 is my favorite "moment" in the song. I have always LOVED that little lick that ascends and then descends. more like 12:53.
For me, this is best masterpiece that DT ever written. If you really connected to this song, it so much things that can be learn from this one song philosophically and musically. How great is that?
For me, this is best masterpiece that DT ever written. If you really connected to this song, it so much things that can be learn from this one song philosophically and musically. How amazing is that?
Scott Friedman nothing to do with mangini, they played octavarium only in 2005 and 2006, and included the last movement in Schmedley Wilcox in 2007, but when portnoy left the bamd they havent played the song for 3 years already. same with stream of consciousness, and songs like that, they tend to play those songs only during the promotion tour...
what, man ACOS in 2000 whas so incredible, that era is uncomparable to this one, james voice was on point, the band had a soul... Now it feels like robots playing, honestly. late 90's and early 00's were DT's prime for sure
definitely....so much times have passed man and how you compare a 20 years or so ago performances with today's....sometimes we have to be logical man.. they are human though!
one of the few bands to have such a solid discography, they can play songs from any album and will be well received love the way they reinvent their show night by night and year by year, great performance
Hi Emile, this is called nuance. I always thought this would be a nuance. Take a look at the key riff. Nuances are not supposed to be exactly the same notes, but a small or subtle distinction. Please, advise.
MZDrum19 It's the way his kit is set up with the 2 remote hi hats. It's physically impossible to close them. It always drove me nuts too. Mangini's an amazing player but I hate his kit. Just play a normal one! lol
One thing that i think goes under the radar, is how Mangini's different approach to playing the tracks alters the bands approach to the songs. Portnoy is a god, but he played the songs always strictly to perfection. Mangini is more organic. His ability to key in and alter the drums to allow James a fraction of a second more to breath in the phrasing made a dynamic leap and bound to his singing on stage immediately in 2011 and since. It also impacts John's solos big time, and you can hear that most especially in "As I am", but really anything. Yeah, i miss Portnoy. In a certain sort of way i never realised how much i was listening to him more than any other member of the band until he left. But i truly appreciate what Mangini brings.
he actually has 4 par of hihats, 2of which work as normal hihats that can be closed with the foot, so I dont see why he insists on playing the same open one all the time. I also dont agree that Mangini is more organic, sounds more calculated and note-for-note than MP ever did:) But this might also be because they seem to be playing to clicktracks now (they have a lot of vocal backingtracks)
Awesome, that's one of the best DT's songs. LaBrie is doing great here. And I like so much when they make improvised solos instead of reproducing note by note like the original record.
This is a very personal song to Mike Portnoy, and I relate to this song quite a bit as well. I love Mangini, but I had really hoped he would play this note for note the same. Every fill he plays that's different from the original recording turns me off completely.
I'm surprised to not find MP fanboys claiming: "why do they play ACOS if MP wrote the lyrics, the riffs, the bass lines, the melodies, the guitar solos and the keyboard arrangements"?
It's funny how Jordan points to the audience on the guitar intro as if to say 'c'mon guys, lev it up, you are not gonna stay low-key for the next twenty more minutes, are you?'
No, it genuinely is slower in several places- in addition to being in a different key. But I can see why they did this as it’s a monster of a song, and even more so to perform live!
My ears love it. But when I click over to watch it drags me down. Where is the love and joy of playing amazing music that used to go hand and hand with the incredible proficiency Dreamtheater has always shown?
I want to know that too. For a keyboard player with perfect pitch it would be awful to shift the keyboard. But re learned all that stuff in a business environment would not be very practical
I think its because this version is 1/2 or 1 tone lower than the original. You can tell he tried to play the original note but quickly switched to lower tone. DT is doing this because LaBrie is too old and can't sing the original version.
Sorry dude, but it was IN THE SCALE even if it was not planned so cannot considered as a fail. :-D That's it. Even if he fails thats's fine... only an alien can play like this... :-)
back in the 80s I would have gone to the store and bought some new batteries, since clearly this tape is running slow. But alas, this is actually the pitch and speed they played this at. It feels like a dirge at times.
That's true, but is some parts he wasn't really comfortable, and then, I'm a big fun of Mangini, I love his style and his perfection as a technical drummer, but the Portnoy touch will remain the most emotional, the most perfect for the ears of any DT lover :( And then, no back vocals :'( ...
he does asome of that but there were def some parts he hasnt been confortable with lately. Look up them playing hells kitchen and its hard not to see and hear the band tearing back and forth or just not fully locking in. Very odd too considering they play with a click now
Very surprised to see they played this live with Mangini. I understood from Mike Portnoy himself that part of their divorce agreement included that DT would not play ACoS live without him, given that it's so personal to him.
Sadly, Dream Theater cannot compose songs like Change of Seasons anymore. Songs like that can only be composed in a well state of spirit. It is not about techniques and notes to the thousands stacked, like today; it is about fury in the eyes, feeling and flames in the heart. These characteristics in them were a time that already passed, and was left behind back there in the 90s. We will only see they playing like this when they play classics, like that.
It's incredible how people are so disgusting... You should have more respect to a person who has always given his best in everything he has done over the years. Also it's incredible the fact that no one ever sees the good parts, but only the flaws. You guys are really disgusting. Best LaBrie performance for A Change Of Seasons in this tour was that night.
Man it feels like I am watching a cover band who is borred out of their minds here. The magic, nerve, interaction is totally gone. I does not feel or sound like they are playing together as a band any more. Each just plays their thing (like last time and the time before that - JR needs a new gimick than the ragtime piano thing it is so old, it got old in 2001) while the rest gets on with it. Such a shame.
James is freaking amazing here!!!!! OMGGG
It's you who suck.
Mangini has been good for him, but also he's singing with such great maturity these last few years especially, really playing to his strengths. There's been some really fantastic performances.
If he's amazing here... I don't wanna listen to his bad concerts.

I really don't understand how people could not hear that he is so out of tune constantly. It rapes my ears...
Honestly, if tuning down helps James to sound more like this, then I'm totally fine with them doing it.
In my estimation, this is the best song in the whole DT catalogue.
Wow, Change of Seasons sounds awesome in Bb. Heavy.
James sounds amazing!!!
Still my favorite DT song. That 'Another World' guitar solo... damn!

“Another world, where nothing is true”
For me, this is best masterpiece that DT ever written.
If you really connected to this song, it so much things that can be learn from this one song philosophically and musically.
How amazing is that?
The interlude at 12:42 is hilarious! I wasn’t expecting ragtime out of the blue!
James did an amazing job here, loved it...
wow that was awesome! great to see Mangini doing his own thing!
WOW JAMES IS AWESOME!
ACOS in 2017? I hope you guys bring Octavarium out of the shelf.
Sky Arrow Bridge doubt it. That's my ONLY gripe about the drummer thing is they don't play songs like Octavarium, ANTR, stream of consciousness, etc.
Let's see if they're going to do that when Octavarium is 20 years old/2025
It's 2024 ....and the did it
I need a Pro-Shot recording of this!!
simply amazing...they sounds great as ever!! DT my band!
what, man ACOS in 2000 whas so incredible, that era is uncomparable to this one, james voice was on point, the band had a soul... Now it feels like robots playing, honestly. late 90's and early 00's were DT's prime for sure
sorry man can't compare your view and mine....in my opinion DT still delivered....DT is forever!
bahrit kharakor for sure man, I still enjoy em, but they aren't like they were before, unfortunately
definitely....so much times have passed man and how you compare a 20 years or so ago performances with today's....sometimes we have to be logical man.. they are human though!
This is an amazing performance! Even more considering this song was released 22 years ago, the whole band sounds great.
I'm glad they play the part at 18:30 at the original tempo. They used to slow it down
I love ACOS ... in this tune is awesome ... this tune Rocks a lot !!
only 1 word: refreshing
like stale bread
Ivo Sousa very.
Ivo Sousa
This was a great concert
one of the few bands to have such a solid discography, they can play songs from any album and will be well received
love the way they reinvent their show night by night and year by year, great performance
For those who doesn't know, at 2:41 starts Erotomania main riff (famous chromatic pattern).
Samuel no it doesn't. it's part of ACOS through and through. It's not the Erotomania riff.
Hi Emile, this is called nuance. I always thought this would be a nuance. Take a look at the key riff. Nuances are not supposed to be exactly the same notes, but a small or subtle distinction. Please, advise.
once again i was so lucky to saw mike portnoy in Australia
Thank u for the upload.
Wow! Amazing
Oh my...
and at 8:22 no one made the mike portnoy background voice WTF !!!
!James is amazing here
are u kidding?
he cant sing anymore
Can't wait to see them on february 16 in Malmo-Sweden!
Why Mangini, why can't you close your hi-hat?
SO TRUE! Literally the only thing bothering me with this performance.
MZDrum19 It's the way his kit is set up with the 2 remote hi hats. It's physically impossible to close them. It always drove me nuts too. Mangini's an amazing player but I hate his kit. Just play a normal one! lol

But this might also be because they seem to be playing to clicktracks now (they have a lot of vocal backingtracks)
Yeah, maybe you're right, but whatever the case, it seemed to do JLB a lot of good. Click tracks IMO killed music.
excited for their concert here in Norway!!
thank you
ACOS live in 2017... Thank God!!!
I really wish they played this when I saw them in Chicago..awesome song
amazing performance,
Great
Dude petruccis solo at 16:50 brings me back to his 90s rock discipline days! Sweet!
Best song ever written
SEND TO BLURAY
love the tuning!
I have missed this song, it has been years since I've heard it live. Love that guitar tone.
James is really good! Bravo!
YEAH I KNOW! The Portnoy's fills are so important to the song, they are part of the narrative of the song!
glad to see the Lord still blessing them after all these years. amen.
I'm surprised to not find MP fanboys claiming: "why do they play ACOS if MP wrote the lyrics, the riffs, the bass lines, the melodies, the guitar solos and the keyboard arrangements"?
They customized it, they brought it 1/2 tone lower to Bb, so now they have the updated version rights :)
2:37 Mangini plays the Octoban part with one hand while keeping the backbeat with the other. In the original recording, Portnoy overdubbed this part.
Holy shit this song is fucking awesome. I MUST see this in the US.
Labrie's just spoiled the whole thing. Even though you are gone, you keep living on.
looking of that sound
And suddenly James at Wacken 2015 doesn't sound bad anymore.
It's funny how Jordan points to the audience on the guitar intro as if to say 'c'mon guys, lev it up, you are not gonna stay low-key for the next twenty more minutes, are you?'
My favorit song.....petrucci is the best guitarist in the world
Can´t wait to see them in Oporto :D
It feels like they play it slower than normal
Frantiqdrummer I think it's because of the clicktracks
it's not slower, it's the song's original tempo
Wtf is this clicktracks everyone keeps talking about?
No, it genuinely is slower in several places- in addition to being in a different key. But I can see why they did this as it’s a monster of a song, and even more so to perform live!
Fucking Amazing!!!!!!!!!
IKR WTF THIS IS WHAT MY LIFE WAS FOR
Je ne peux pas ne pas pleurer ...
My ears love it. But when I click over to watch it drags me down. Where is the love and joy of playing amazing music that used to go hand and hand with the incredible proficiency Dreamtheater has always shown?
still there?
Am I the only one who really misses some of the nuances of MP's playing in this song?
Are rushing, stick tricks, and spitting all over the guitar cabs considered "nuances"?
EthnHayabusa at least he could close his fucking hi hat
@@ahmetcuce9183 His foot is too busy teaching a class at berklee
Curious if Jordan transposed everything or just pitch shifted his patches.
cangus he got perfect pitch so I would be very surprised if he just "tuned down" his keyboard!
I want to know that too. For a keyboard player with perfect pitch it would be awful to shift the keyboard. But re learned all that stuff in a business environment would not be very practical
He doesn't need to pitch shift. He's a classically-trained musician. And this isn't a particularly difficult song to play anyway.
This also isn't just simple chords or riffs, theres quite a lot going on, not that Jordan isn't capable of course, just seems like a lot of work
In an interview he said he pitch shifted the patches. Because of his perfect pitch, it drives him mad haha
So much ass kicking. *-*
Best dream theater song ever. Only portnoy is missing
Yeah
true friendship between mike mangini and john petrucci
Way to go, Mr. LaBrie. 👍
io c'ero! Dream Theater best band in the Universe!
is this how they are closing the show?? I am so looking forward to this!
4:00 petrucci fail😱
Thanx god🙏🏻 he's human😄
OMG you make my Day hahahahahahahaahahahahahahahahaahahahahahaha
it was never his,it was that goddamn expensive guitar's fault lol
I think its because this version is 1/2 or 1 tone lower than the original. You can tell he tried to play the original note but quickly switched to lower tone. DT is doing this because LaBrie is too old and can't sing the original version.
Sorry dude, but it was IN THE SCALE even if it was not planned so cannot considered as a fail. :-D
That's it. Even if he fails thats's fine... only an alien can play like this... :-)
JP has never failed to play a single note.
Notes sometimes fail him.
tight as always
back in the 80s I would have gone to the store and bought some new batteries, since clearly this tape is running slow. But alas, this is actually the pitch and speed they played this at. It feels like a dirge at times.
fucking dream theater 4 fucking ever Mike Portnoy and Kevin moore
welcome to 2017 fucko, this is not 1993 anymore, they L E F T the fucking band.. got it?
charlie dominici
You can tell that James is kind of shifting beetween the original key and this half step down.
NAILED IT
Mangini is finding so much difficulties ... isn't he ?
I don't think so. He's playing some parts differently. We're used to hearing the fills Portnoy placed in places and Mangini doesn't play some of them.
I'm glad Mangini steers away from playing the drum parts exactly like Portnoy.
Bourhil Othmane WTF mangini..😠
he does asome of that but there were def some parts he hasnt been confortable with lately. Look up them playing hells kitchen and its hard not to see and hear the band tearing back and forth or just not fully locking in. Very odd too considering they play with a click now
Amazing!! Are they allowing filming now?
They didnt allow filming on the astonishing tour because of the set up and theatrical, but in all other tours I know they allow filming.
Man James sounds great!
why the hi hat ?
How is this march it's not February yet
Very surprised to see they played this live with Mangini. I understood from Mike Portnoy himself that part of their divorce agreement included that DT would not play ACoS live without him, given that it's so personal to him.
Nah, that's the AA suite. They played ACOS on this anniversary tour for Images & Words, since it was written during the same time.
i miss something at 9:40 - 10:00
LaBrie's scream maybe?
9:36 wtf JLB? Wow. Although most of this song he sounds awesome. I need to actually see them live to hear. Hopefully soon.
Scott Friedman The solos are starting so he's saying goodbye lol.
!!!
what happen at 4:00? :(
Sadly, Dream Theater cannot compose songs like Change of Seasons anymore. Songs like that can only be composed in a well state of spirit. So, you didn't hear illumination theory or breaking all illusions
Illumination Theory sucks. Breaking All Illusions is very good but doesn't compare (lyrically) to Seasons.
JAAAMMEEESS WHERE IS YOUR TAMBOURINE????
Does the part at 11:20 remind anyone else of F-Zero?
Longest Samsung advert in history.
Waaaaaaaay better than 2000!!!!
No matter what, that's still MIKE song.
I love mike's new interpretation on 12:16
but anything else than that
PLEASE CLOSE THE HI HATS
you ruin the whole song if you open it the whole time
I never thought I'd say it but I actually think I like this version better in the lower tuning..if vocals were a bit better it would be amazing
What has been the show duration of this tour?
colocar marimba onde é piano é foda hein jordan?!
when u see this video on the list, petrucci looks like dwarf there
It's incredible how people are so disgusting... You should have more respect to a person who has always given his best in everything he has done over the years. Also it's incredible the fact that no one ever sees the good parts, but only the flaws. You guys are really disgusting.
Best LaBrie performance for A Change Of Seasons in this tour was that night.
Totally agree
Rudess che suggerisce gli stacchi a Mangini proprio non se po' vedè
Petrucci back in 14:48
Tocando com click, fica ainda mais robótico e sem improvisos.. Fora o que pode entrar de playback... damn!
Mangini deberia respetar los arreglos de esta masterpiece. Se echan de menos muchos toques que él no hace...
Wow, Petrucci sings polyphonic backgroundvocals with La Brie´s voice :D :D
Man it feels like I am watching a cover band who is borred out of their minds here.
The magic, nerve, interaction is totally gone.
I does not feel or sound like they are playing together as a band any more. Each just plays their thing (like last time and the time before that - JR needs a new gimick than the ragtime piano thing it is so old, it got old in 2001) while the rest gets on with it.
Such a shame.
