Oh Danni and Joe , you’ve had us in tears. Thank you for putting together such an awesome video. We are thrilled to have been able to play it forward and to a nicer couple it couldn’t have gone. May she get you to all the places you want to visit and create many many memories. All our love and see you both soon. Out there on the cut xx. Ali and Jon
P.S. Many thanks for all the lovely messages. We are so very blessed xx

Joe what a great video. I did see you on James’ video as well. He was so happy to see you and literally ran off his boat to meet you. But I must say, it’s all about paying it forward. And I’m certain you will do that Joe just as you help others whenever you can. It was so nice to have someone pay it forward to you. What a wonderful couple. I will pray for miracle to heal John’s cancer.

The phrase you were looking for early in the video: "Cutting off your nose to spite your face". I decided to look up the origin of the saying and found this online: The exact idiom did not appear in print until the 1700's. However, the idea of causing yourself more harm than your enemy goes back as far as a Latin proverb in the year 1200. Male ulciscitur dedecus sibi illatum, qui amputat nasum suum. He who cuts off his nose takes poor revenge for a shame inflicted on him.
On a completely separate matter, amazing people you seem to get to meet on the waterways - Narrow boat Warrior - in a battle of his own, but keeping going and giving you an engine.

The kindness of strangers can never be overlooked. No matter how cynical we may be about the world and the people we share it with, there is always someone that renews our faith in the basic decency we have all been born to achieve. Pay it forward, be kind, life isn't a contest, it's at best a fun-fair. In the end, none of us are anything more than the memories we've left in someone else's minds. The only way to live beyond your mortal span is to insure that everyone whose lives were touched by yours remembers you as someone kind. Bill & Ted had it right, actually--as corny as they were at expressing it. Everyone has the capability of being heroes. Live every moment, wring every joy from it that you can, make the most of every day. Enjoy every sunrise, every sunset, every cup of coffee, every beer, every loaf of bread, every experience--only fate knows which one will be your last. As the Doctor once said, "we're all just memories in the end. Make sure it's a good one..." --Dan

    Hi Joe
I have always thought of the narrow boat community as one big family, always there to look out for one another. This story is just another example about how this special family has shown support. Jon and Ali are two very special people in the narrow boat community just like the previous owner (Mick Sheehan) of Nesha's boat (Driftwood Folk channel).
Joe, do keep in mind why John and Ali gifted you and Danni with this special gift. Hopefully some day you will be able to reach out and reciprocate.
Go safe and I will be sitting beside the canal waiting for your next video..

    • @markrant1460

Joe/Danni, that special time will occur when you least expect it, just as it did for Jon and Ali. It may not be tomorrow, or next year or ten years from now but the opportunity for you to reciprocate will happen. Experience and age has taught me that. You two are already beginning to be known by the boating community as they speak of you. May you be healthy while you grow old and grey while traveling the canals.

I fell into the River Soar at Sileby Mill and imbibed about a third of a teaspoonful of Soarwater. On that cocktail of bugs and chemicals I have never been so ill and continued wretching for hours on a completely empty stomach whilst aching everywhere and running a huge fever. The doctor said some people with a weaker resistance would have died. BTW the "i" in Sileby is like "eye". I went to school there.

Good day from NZ, lovely to hear your accents, Bristol folk are you?, only forty miles down m4 from where I was born. Brilliant trip managing your vessel alone then a road trip. I have really enjoyed this vid and will view your others, I do love seeing the old countryside canals and rivers upon which I spent many hours happily fishing as a lad. I often wish I could go back for a trip but one thing or another prevents that. Have to laugh as I find myself muttering advice to you, as a mechanic of roughly 60 years would love to be able to help you but honestly you are a very adaptable, sensible young man. Anyway I struggle sometimes to do up my shoelaces hehehe. Looking forward to viewing further uploads, well done and good luck from us both. Hooray for now ...... Rob n Ann

Wonderful heart warming video. A Few to many years ago my sister and I travelled to the UK. We cycled along many a canal and even in the sunny weather we had there were muddy parts to walk. A chance to slow down and talk. The ones I didn't like were where there was just a narrow foot wide deep track. Or what we call a sheep track. I'm small and ride a small(short height) bike. Several times my pedal caught the side of a deep sheep track, and over she goes. Lying on the weeds and rushes eyeing the canal water isn't the memory one expects to bring back! Hehehe😂. Kia ora from New Zealand. Remember the swans to...scary beasties!

I got a cancer diagnosis at 49 in 2020 and am recovering from a recent operation. I had so many plans for adventures and travel which have all been put on hold though hopefully not indefinitely. You mentioned you are getting you hull blacked soon. My question is why bother blacking when red oxide works better and all ships use red oxide. The blacking to me seems a bit of an ongoing cost when oxide works so a better job

There’s a few reasons bitumen is used - this sums it up pretty well on a forum
“I agree with both of you. Red oxide primer is only effective as part of a coating system, which usually means a number of coats of other paint(s). Its is indeed porous and the pores need filling up with something. Blacking will fill those holes too, and thus protect the primer. The reason blacking was used on a canal boat is that hardened paint scrapes off with the inevitable contact between boat and infrastructure, but blacking just smears.”

I can take my pension in 2 years time after 37 years of paying in. We are but a small speck of dust in time. Make the most of it. x

How much does it cost to have the blacking done in the dry dock...and how often is it required? Also, I saw one video where a guy was promoting shot blasting before blacking and saying power washing doesn't cut it. What are your thoughts on this? Thanks.
