    I sure do appreciate all your “how to”, “how come”, and “what for” videos in the bearding world. When I first began growing my beard, I began to notice that there were products for the beard, but I had no clue what they did, what their purpose was, and how to apply them. Sure they come with instructions, but that really doesn’t tell much. At first I bought beard butter. But then my son in law told me about balms. So I tried it. But it wasn’t until after I began watching your videos packed with information about the products, how to use, and what their purpose is for my beard.
    Thank you, Trusted Teacher, for the positivity, and for continuing to educate me!

    I've been using Honest Amish Beard Wax since the beginning of my beard journey. When my beard was shorter, it was really crazy and I needed that super strong hold. Honest Amish has a regular balm, more of a butter, a heavy duty balm, more of a regular balm, an extra grit balm, which is just plain weird, and a wax. Still use it on days when I don't want my beard to move. I don't really see much difference between a beard wax and a mustache wax, except for the containers.

      I've noticed the same thing. Most beard waxes and mustache waxes have the same level of hold and could be called the same thing. There are only a few companies I've found that have a strong finishing wax worthy of its name.

    Thanks for this great video Dan and I greatly appreciate it for including our product in it. You hit every nail on the head.
    In our classification, there are 5 product categories (and we've got the 3 categories in our range for now) from no hold to strong hold. Oil, butter, balm, beard wax and mustache wax. When it comes to balm, we indicate a lot of times that it's not meant for styling at all and a balm shouldn't offer anything but very light hold that dissipates within a short time. After all, you don't expect other "balm" products in cosmetics to offer any sort of hold and styling. Take for example skin balm, after shave balm, hair balm, lip balm, hand balm etc. Nothing in these products have anything to do with styling and neither should beard balm. And this is where our company stands. Balm needs to be about conditioning with a very light hold that feels natural and doesn't shape the beard and doesn't feel heavy in any way.
    Now, our beard wax is meant for shaping and not for sculpting the beard. This is why we insist on having the "medium hold" indication on the packaging. Beard wax needs to have enough wax for shaping without making the beard look and feel in any way unnatural while offering nourishment. Mustache wax on the other hand, needs to have, IMO, strong hold, much stronger than a beard wax, and enough wax for those handlebars. The SEVEN POTIONS beard wax is something between beard balm and mustache wax, or as some guys might say, a "heavy duty" beard balm.
    Happy to hear your thoughts. - John

      @DanCBearded  5 лет назад +1

      I couldn't agree any more! A lot of people in the comments have asked if they can use mustache wax in place of beard wax. I commented well before this comment and answered them IMO mustache wax is stronger than beard wax. Without ever discussing this with you or any other company, sounds like we are on the same exact page! I am absolutely loving your beard wax, keep up the great work!

I 100% agree with you on the naming of the different beard product catagories. Waxes could even be broken into a training wax and finishing wax. Many companies say they have a very firm hold mustache wax when it is more of a training wax than a sculpting wax.

    Something congruent to the scoville scale for peppers would be nice to show how much hold a product has. That would require a universal code of agreement between all companies and I know that's entirely unrealistic, but you can't deny; that would be incredibly helpful.

    • @DanCBearded
      @DanCBearded  5 лет назад +2

      Agreed! Would just take a few big companies to make it the standard

    • @doylesanders
      @doylesanders 5 лет назад

      Or, we bearded brothers could encourage companies to align with a suggested standard. After all, they're selling to us!
      I'm in favor of Dan C's definitions of the product types - butters, balms, and waxes. Obviously, oils should be included, too.
      Maybe Dan C could do a video dedicated to the topic of beard product standards (hint hint). Then have several beard product reviewers collaborate on them and then encourage product companies to consider adhering to the standards for ease of understanding by bearded community.
      All good, right?

  • @doylesanders

    First business first - "Hi, Jax!"
    Now, I absolutely agree with your categorization of butters > balms > waxes. I have been confused and confounded by the differences in products I've tried. I've even taken some and added oils to soften some balms into "butters".
    Having standards would be a huge help. And, there is no one better to author and sponsor some standard definitions than Dan C!

    I wish more companies offered it. I've been using a tiny amount of grave before shave mustache wax after using balm to keep my sides laying down. I had about a 10" beard and cut it off at Christmas and am growing it out again. It is very tempting to trim the sides and I probably would if I didn't have wax. I will have to try the 7 potions. I find I usually want more hold than I can get with most balms.

    I agree with ya in a sense. I just hate having to buy so many different products for my beard. Just seems easier to use butter for conditioning, and either a balm or wax for styling. They need to call it one or the other. No need for 2 products to condition with different set of standards imo

    I agree with your category system. At the moment, I identify a product as a butter if it has no wax or if wax is the last ingredient before scents. Balms have wax higher in the ingredients list, and waxes are usually named as such. Your assessment would be very helpful and would eliminate some guesswork on my part.

    My problem is a frizzy beard.
    No matter what shampoo, conditioner, butter, balm or wax or what quantity of these I Employ I still get that friz. Mine is about a 3 1/2 inch beard. I’m thinking of growing out another half inch to perhaps a full inch. I just received the seven potions woodland Harmony yesterday. I love the smell but it doesn’t seem to be making a difference on my beard. I had such high hopes. I also picked up an Aberlite beard straightener. Nothing can get this beard to lay flat and somewhat orderly.

    Hi Dan! I just received a small tin of mustache wax from Don Porfirio in the mail. Wow, it is a tiny tin. No pun intended. Anyway, my mustache and beard are relatively new, about two months old, so I need to really control my mustache. A lot of smallish hairs still go in all directions when I use beard balm. So, I figured I needed something that provided more control. Anyway, I needed to use my fingernail to get the mustache wax out of the tin. Then I tried to warm it up and liquefy it by rubbing my hands together vigorously. Nothing happened except I created a small ball of wax. I continued rubbing my hands more briskly, and then the small amount of wax in my hands broke into several smaller pellets. I realized I was just kneading these pellets. One even fell on the floor! The mustache wax was unusable. My wife suggested I try placing the wax in a spoon and heating it with a cigarette lighter to actually melt the wax and then apply it to my mustache. Your thoughts & suggestions, please? Thanks.

    I won a Citrus Tonic oil and wax combo from No BS Beard Reviews, and that stuff is straight 🔥, little bit of that wax goes a loong way. As for the categorization, I think it’s absolutely essential so the customer knows what kind of product they’re actually getting(ie expecting a medium-ish hold from a balm) and either getting something as light as a butter or on the firmer waxy side.

    Lol I only ran into an issue once. I needed a strong hold and without putting attention i got heavy duty honest amish and realised it was a strong conditioner. Then I got mountaineer heavy duty balm and got a wax lol love both products I was just confused for a sec. Would be easier if they named them beard wax, there's a few that are strong hold and dont know thinking their just medium balms and surprised later by hold. I oil first let it set then balm and was if I'm getting ready for a long day or night. Or either I just use oil and balm. You always need to get the set. Some dont mix well and some actually do. Gotta try to see what balms to mix with other oils. Great review teach.

    I agree with you completely on this topic. I don't like that they're isn't a definitive answer on what constitutes as a butter, balm and wax. A butter should be simple and have no beeswax, but if it does it needs to be the last ingredient and have very little. I suppose it all comes down to how much beeswax and the type of beeswax used in the product. If we don't come up with a industry-standard then the company needs to specify if it's a conditioning or styling balm. Then again if it's coditioning then it should technically be called a butter. All I can say is it's a problem and we need to fix it.

    great demonstration Dan! early on when i started using these products i got confused wich was what between the balm and butter, then sometime after i began realizing to tell the difference was in the shape of the container, like those balms (strictly for styling) tin containers that are more "flat" shaped such as that seven potions, and balm for conditioning were in an actual jar container. I think that’s a great way to break down the products. I have the Woodland Harmony and the new wax that Angry Kracken came out with. Both work well.
    I also think that all the companies should offer an unscented wax. Especially since it’s just used for styling purposes, that way there is one that could be an everyday use and work well with any scented oil that was used.

    I agree 100% I've found a few and I'm sure there are plenty more that are wrong on their products description. In no way am I bashing them, but Scotch Porter is a perfect example. Granted, I love their products (conditioner and "serum" are my favorites) but the balm although very conditioning in my opinion should be considered a leave-in conditioner or a cream because it doesn't qualify as a butter either.

    Dan, you are 1000% right. Companies need to be more consistent about what they call what. A good example of this is Scotch Porter's balm. It is a lotion type texture and it has no beeswax in it. The only ingredient with wax in the name is emulsifying wax, what ever that is. Lol. It is way down on the ingredient list. Dont get me wrong I love the product. It feels great in my beard but I use it for nourishment only at night not what I expect from a balm. Probably should be called a butter. Thanks for everything you do.

  • @joelvaldez6970
    @joelvaldez6970 5 лет назад +1

    I agree that the definition of beard balm is to wide. I feel like a balm should have a hold. A medium hold. Butter = none to light hold, Balm = medium hold, Wax = strong hold. I personally don't like light hold balms because I feel like I just drench my beard and face with oil. Beard balms to me should feel like you're putting something on (like a "grippy" feeling) rather than "slicking" something on. Waxes should be like a "heavy duty" thing for bigger beards/out of control beards with hairs that have a mind of their own. If you have a "balm" that emulsifies as soon as you get it out the tin then should be a butter, not a balm. I would only use that at night or on lazy stay at home days. I feel like JC Grooming and The Luxurious Bastard have very good definitions of a balm: good hold, feels nice, emulsifies with some work, and conditions. It has that "grippy" feel I mentioned before. However, Man Beard Co. and Honest Amish for example have balms that emulsify as soon as it's in your palm. Because of that and the texture, I consider their balms to be butters. They're highly conditioning and have no hold to a light hold. So if the beard game had a more solidified definition on what a beard balm should feel like then it would be a lot better. You always know what type of consistency you're going to get when going for whatever product. But as it stands right now, the Seven Potions balm to me is a balm. From the way it looked and emulsified in your hand, it's a product that I consider to be a balm even if it DOES have a light hold.

    I’m looking for a strong wax I can use to hold down the fly aways, would this be the answer?
    I’m thinking of going for either ‘Bearded Goon Ridiculously Strong Beard & Moustache Wax’ or ‘Honest Amish Extra Grit Beard Wax’, which one would be better?
    Or should I just trim the fly aways for the time being while the beard continues to grow? Sorry for the bombard or questions lol.

      Johnnie Ray= tinyurl.com/yhyx782m
      * DANC10 = 10% off
