- Highlights from the Iran - Scotland match of WC 1978 in which Iran tied and embarrassed Scotland 1-1.
Also includes interviews with some of the players and coaches who were involved in the match.

Don't be so harsh on Scotland ,that was the best Iran team in history ,unbeaten in Asia for 10 years ! they were unknown in world stage at the time so everybody including themselves ! underestimated them at the time ,it was their first world cup ever ,Wish we could see this team in 1982 ........

One goal down to Holland after an hour and a draw against the best side in Europe at the time, Iran were no mugs.
iran have evolved into a very accomplished football nation. nearly topped thier group at last world cup, and should have beat argentina in 2014, 2 controversial decisions screwed them before messi scored a wonder goal, they are a stubborn team to beat and concede few goals.
The US with all their wealth, that ability to lure players of any nationality really should be doing a lot better. Scotland is s very small nation of 5 million. The fact it's achieved what it has so far has been astounding. Celtic beat one of the best teams in the world in the European Cup with all it's team members being Scottish. Anyone who had ever been involved in football over the last 60 years respects Scotland appreciates the mountains they have had to scale.
"Iran? Don't make me laugh?" I laughed alright. The wonderful Scottish fans turned on them in a heartbeat.
i personaly think iran with their full team is better and can beet scotland again
although scotland has many advantages over iran such as a proper manager and proper funding (compared to iranian team)
Painful to watch even after all these years. As a kid watching this it was really nerve shredding. Probably the root cause why i'm a bag of nerves every time Scotland play.

@80svideoluvr If Scotland is so bad,why did the world champions and European champions struggle against us for large parts of them game,and lose 2 goals?We are far from the finished article.But we are a young team,most who played in that game had not even had 20 caps.And we were missing key men,like McFadden,Wallace,Brown,Gordon who all would have played.I know we are not as strong as we were in the 80ties.We need to re structure our leugue,but it dont look like happening.But tell me WHO R IRAN?

@scottishlad1987 Don't give me that crap. I know that Scots HATE England, so you won't enjoy watching England destroy ANYBODY. And anyway, you might have been able to root for your OWN team against the U.S.'s in the World Cup, except for one small detail, wouldn't you have? BTW - I'm not so sure England wins that match. As Landon Donovan has stated ALL the pressure is on England in that one - don't be all that surprised if they, as we say here in the States, "choke."

@80svideoluvr They did it cos our team,was the back bone of the English teams who won things in Europe.But that was the 70ties and 80ties.But even in the 90ties,we had players that had done that.Now the only guy who has done thats Darren Fletcher at Man U.But EPL teams R starting 2 buy our players again.The past 2 seasons more have went doon there in a long time.And more will follow them.There is half a dozen good young Scots in SPL,who are EPL class.Also we have tons in the Championship in ENG

@scottishlad1987 I'm not bragging about it. Just stating that the U.S.'s team has done better in World Cups than a team representing a country that cares a LOT more about soccer than the U.S. does. Which is true, of course. And I don't like baseball or any other pro sport nowadays although I ALWAYS watch the World Cup. Not sure if you do, though, since your team is so rarely there.
Yes that's true as a scottish football fan myself we have never been good enough at big tournaments a mentality problem americans are good at most sports anyway and millions of people to pick from plus billions of pounds put into sport compared to Scotland who don't have the funds or the coaches.
@80svideoluvr Not really when we knocked out some of the best teams in the world to get there.You see thats what U have 2 do in Europe.We must be good then,cos our teams have no money.And have won things in europe,and made finals.And it was not just the big Glasgow teams that did that.We care about Scotland doing well at other levels,it was only 6 years ago.We R getting sum of them moving up now.
@scottishlad1987 Actually, the U.S. got to the quarterfinals in 2002. Being from Scotland, you wouldn't know what it means for your team to get that far in a World Cup, would you? I'm not sure Scotland could get to the World Cup if it were in CONCACAF, that's how bad Scottish football is. So the U.S. lost to Iran in 1998. So what? Last time the U.S. played sorry-ass Scotland it kicked its ass. How's Scotland been doing in the World Cup and the Euros, lately? Oh, that's right...
@legandrydirk I don't care about club football. There, it's all about who has the most money. The only soccer I really follow is that played between national teams.
@scottishlad1987 And anyway, if you're trying to show that population matters when it comes to soccer strength, then how is it that of ALL the countries in the British Isles, Scotland's is the ONLY ONE whose team has NEVER advanced past the first round of the World Cup? Sure, Scotland's population isn't all that much, but I imagine that it's more than Northern Ireland's and Wales', and THOSE countries' teams have made it past the first round of the World Cup! What do you have to say to THAT?

@80svideoluvr Only cos of there managers from Scotland,and there Scottish players like McIliferry.Bill Jeffiries was there boss a Scot.So if your American you should thank us.It was also a Scot of set up your league.Its a bit like actually talking to an Iranian.Again tell me about any USA or Iranian world class players?Cos I dont know of any.Scotland is still producing them.Like our keeper Craig Gordon.The save he made a few weeks ago,was compared 2 Banks V Pele bye the English themselfs on TV.

@80svideoluvr Your talking crap but,we are not that bad.We have had 2 teams,in 4 magor finals in the last 10 years.And Scotland has been to the under 19 Euro finals of 2006,now those players are coming of age.Theres no other nation in europe our size thats done that.With hardly even the same amount of money spent on sport to,cos we are not Independant.74 world cup,we were the first team to go out un beaten drew with Brazil.And in 78 82 we went out in goal difference.Been 2 more finals than YOU 2

@daviedee123 In fact, Scottish soccer is SO CRAPPY that I honestly do not think that Scotland could qualify for a World Cup if it were trying to do so from within CONCACAF. THAT'S how BAD Scottish soccer is these days. REALLY BAD.
@80svideoluvr At least we used to get there.We never even entered them till 1950.And got asked bye FIFFA,2 cum in with England as joint founders of the game.SFA said they would only go if they beat England that year.And they lost and stayed at home.Your records about the same in getting there,and U had more time 2 do it.The fact is that if U had 2 qaulify over here,U would never have even made it 2 the finals.Sure Scots are proud of there team.Why would they not be?Reaching a finals a ACHEIVMENT
@legandrydirk Theres cost 350 million pounds,over there budget.For there national team 2 train in.Ours costs 36 million quid.They have 7 million to spend on a boss.We get querter a million on a boss.Even Ireland get 2 spend a million on theres.Also we have 2 share a staduim.Whilst our tax money goes to re furbish there Wembley.We need in door facilitys all over the place,in the big towns and Citys.There is even better facilitys in Lithuinia,than there is in Scotland.Need a 16 team league aswell
@80svideoluvr Also I am looking at all the teams from UK,who have won anything in europe.Dont see any yanks in them.But I can see plenty of Jocks.Good teams can go out in round one,just look at France this year.They have some great players who are world class.And they put England in there place.After that lot were laughing at them.They wont be laughing at them anymore.Just a shame that we dont get a chance,2 wipe the smug smiles of there faces.They declined our invitation 2 play us in Febuary HN

@legandrydirk That's one of the dumbest things I've ever seen typed. Of COURSE Scotland's team has been to more World Cups than the U.S.'s. Scotland has, historically, had MUCH MORE interest in football than the U.S. has, and it hasn't been until about the last 20 years that the U.S. has put the effort forth to compete in soccer. The fact remains that the U.S.'s team has gotten further in World Cups than Scotland's has. That's all that matters, chump.
@80svideoluvr We are not the arogant ones.Our supports won 2 awards,at the last two finals we have been 2.So the world does not see us as arrogant.Bad managment dont think so.Jock Stein was boss in 82.Alex Ferguson 86,2 legands.I would say bad luck.Also the EPL turning into,a more national league dont help us or any of the other UK sides who have qualfied longer ago than us.Lack of money is the proplem,we only have 2 in door facilitys in the whole country.England gets more cash spent on 1 center

Anything else is meaningless. Scottish football is a f*cking joke and has been for decades. As I stated below - Scottish football is SO BAD that I don't think the Scottish team would qualify for a World Cup if it were trying to do so out of CONCACAF. THAT'S how bad Scottish football is these days.

There's ALSO a bit of a difference between how much Scots generally care about soccer vs. how much "Merkans" generally do, AND there's ALSO a difference between how far the U.S.'s team has gotten in World Cups vs. how far the SCOTTISH team has ever gotten in tournaments (NOT EVEN ONCE past the first round, in case you've forgotten). What do you say to THOSE facts? I type again: Scottish soccer SUCKS. Period.
@legandrydirk Of course it is. And one to be proud of. But for a country that loves soccer so much, one would think that merely getting to a Finals would not be enough for proud people like Scots. And I don't think it is. So what has the problem been? A lack of talent, or perhaps a lack of chemistry, I'm guessing. And a little bit of bad luck, too, along with maybe some poor managing not to mention a hint of arrogance, perhaps?

@80svideoluvr I can remember Scotland reaching finals of magor tourniments at other levels.And our club teams have won things in Europe.There is no other country in Europe,our size thats did that.So dont try and run down my game.When your nation has never produced one single world class player of note.And Scots took you to 3 world cups.You went through on 5 points,thats not a lot of points.Other teams have went out on that amount of points.Ever thought U might have got lucky?Cos U were U know.

@80svideoluvr You sound like one of those Americans,that sucks up to the english.Just cos they slaughter our team,does not mean that they have a clue what there talking about.If they did they would have more managers at there top clubs.They have never got a good word to say about our team.And thats OK since they are our rivals for over 100 years.We get all there games here on terestial TV.They dont and need to pay to see ours.So they know little of our league,and whats going on up here.
@80svideoluvr Wrong a Scot took the USA 2 the semi final of the world cup,better than any Iranian.U dont have a clue about Scottish football.If U did U would know,that we have more players in the EPL than we did in 98.And have guys like Fletcher and Hutton in round 2 of the champions leugue.And loads of players in the championship,the second richest league in the world,2nd only 2 the EPL.And the Rangers players,R used 2 playing C.L football.And have played in EPL,most have done so,unlike Iranian

@scottishlad1987 This is the United States. "Close" doesn't count. Scotland's team hasn't been to a major tournament in over a decade. VERY telling for a team that was ONCE {snicker} thought of as one of the best in the world. That was a LOOOOONG time ago, though. You have no real retort because you have nothing to back it up with. I couldn't care less about the English team. I don't have anything against the English team, but I don't really care about it, either. Matter of fact I was laughing my ass off when that 'keeper of theirs choked on that shot during the World Cup allowing the U.S.'s team to escape with a point.
