How Scotland could do with players like this today! I remember they qualified for five,YES FIVE World cups in a row.1974,1978,1982,1986 and 1990.It’s just my opinion, but Bill Shankly should have got the Scotland job when Willie Ormand went.Shanks had left Liverpool unexpectedly in 74, and was at a loose end for ages.Imagine him taking Scotland to the World Cup in Argentina in 1978 instead of the indecisive Ally McLeod. How McLeod left out Andy Gray for instance who’d been voted PFA Young player and players player of the year in 1977,was baffling, especially when you think the most successful team in the First Division then was Liverpool, who won the League and European Cup,with Man Utd winning the FA Cup,while Gray’s team,Aston Villa, finished fourth and won the League cup.Shankly would have taken him no doubt about that.

I remember watching the Wales vs Scotland game- very critical game. The penalty was pretty controversial- I believe Big Joe touched the ball.. a Maradona special… anyway a tough game. Wales has a strong squad: Flynn, Toshack, Yorath, Jones etc no easy side w a very memorable jersey-classic! The Czechs were a formidable side w/great pedigree, which they still have today! The goal by Dalglish against Wales makes for a really interesting pub quiz question -
Who scored for the away team on his home ground yet it was not an own goal?
Although it was a home game for Wales, it was switched to Anfield from Ninian Park in Cardiff because of previous crowd disorder involving Wales supporters. Anfield was Dalglish’s home ground at the time since he was playing for Liverpool however in this game he was playing for the away team - Scotland. 🙂

Scotland were genuinely fancied in Argentina, priced at 8/1 by the bookies. They had the squad to do well there, but probably peaked a year early. Also didn't help that the manager messed up big time, not giving enough respect to their opponents and only playing his best team when it was too late.

The so-called "lap of honour" at Hampden was on the advice of the Strathclyde Police who were worried that Glasgow Airport wouldn't be able to function if thousands of supporters turned to see the squad fly out. Truly a brilliant Scotland team but Scottish FA comitted suicide by stupidly and unfairly banning influential Captain, Billy Bremner for life in 1976 for a silly scuffle in a bar! Scotland's hope got buried by that unforgivable, suicidal decision. The Scots sorely missed Bremner's inspiration, influence, and leadership in the World Cup. To make matters worse, the FA appointed Ally Macload who messed up the team selections, leaving out key players, Tommy Hutchinson, Peter Lorimer, Jimmy Jonston. Jock Stein should have been the team manager for the World Cup.

Easy to see why Scotland were seen as one of the favourites in Argentina after topping a tough group containing Czechoslovakia (the European champions) and Wales, who had reached the last eight of that 1976 tournament won by Czechoslovakia. Both teams would have been sick of the sight of Joe Jordan at the end!

    • @Ruda-n4h

If anyone had bothered to think about it, Scotland's position as one of the favourites was based on turning over Czechoslovakia (who were not the team of the previous year), in the autumn at Hampden Park. There's a big difference between that and taking on the world's top teams in South America 9 months later.
