Rugeley Power Station 600ft CHIMNEY DEMOLITION! - 24/01/2021

  • At 8:30am on Sunday 24th January 2021, a 600ft (183m) chimney was DEMOLISHED at Rugeley Power Station in Staffordshire. This power station was taken out of service in 2016 with various different parts already demolished. In this video I head to a field close to Rugeley Power Station to capture the moment that this iconic piece of the Staffordshire skyline fell to the ground!
Later this year the 4 cooling towers will also be demolished and I plan to cover this demolition here on AdventureShawn!

Thanks for filming this Shawn! I live in Rugeley (well, Brereton) and was one of the ones watching from my bedroom window, it's great seeing another perspective of it happening. I still remember the day the chimney's from the A site came down when I was a kid and we all descended on the park to watch. Unforgettable scenes!

Definitely experience the difference between the speed of light and the speed of sound.
I saw on TV the demolition of the cooling towers at Ironbridge. Certainly changed the skyline. I can understand some people missing them and getting nostalgic if the view has been a big part of their lives.
The view from the trains on the West Coast Main line is never going to the same.

Quite a sad day for Rugeley and it’s history, but I guess that it happened for a good reason or it just might of seen its better days.. I watched the live video of it happening and it was quite emotional for my relatives and some of the people i knew who are based there in Rugeley. I am based approximately 15 minutes from Rugeley so it was quite sad for me because when we were not in our 3rd lockdown me and my family went on a few walks in that area.. Its still snowing quite heavily where I am too, so i think you were quite lucky with the weather. Hi mate.
Went to see it myself and record it, stuck it on my channel.
I'm kinda in the same boat as you mate, these landmarks mean a lot to their respective areas. Over the past 2 years I've been up and down the country documenting whenever I can the demolition of these industrial monoliths, chatting with locals about them and what these places have meant to them, be it if they worked there, or it's just a convenient landmark to know when you're home on a journey.
End of 2019 I was over in Shropshire in Ironbridge to watch their 4 iconic cooling towers demolished. Watched it with some fellas who worked at the power station.
Loads of people wanted them kept, restored and put on the Listed Buildings list to be protected. Unfortunately English Heritage had assessed them and they were too outdated and costly to keep let alone maintain so they had to go.
Up in Yorkshire near Leeds at a place called Ferrybridge, I watched 5 of their 8 iconic towers demolished, same kinda feelings with a few who thought them eyesores.
Down in Oxfordshire in Didcot, three towers and a chimney were brought down. They were widely loved, in a county as flat as Oxfordshire they were the most prominent thing on the skyline, all gone now.
Whether their eyesores or monuments to our industrial heritage, the UK's gonna be a different place without them on the skyline.
Fiddler's Ferry up north near Warrington is earmarked for demolition, Cottam in Nottinghamshire has 8 towers that'll be gone within next few years, Eggborough just down the road from Ferrybridge in Yorkshire off the M62 is also earmarked for blowdown.
At this rate, the 5 at Willington near Derby will be the last standing in the UK and they've been derelict for 20 years.
I hope I get to say goodbye to all of them.

Hiya.Good comment. Several documentaries have examined the trade tower collapses. They both fell within their own footprints. For two structures 1300 feet tall that in itself is staggering from an engineering point of view.A demolition team would have struggled to replicate that not once but twice. The conclusion was floor slab hanger brackets failing through heat and creating a domino effect but ? Both towers were damaged at much different heights so the fact they fell identically raised many structural engineers eyebrows.

That doesn’t compare to the implosion of the former td Waterhouse in Orlando or the hotels in Las Vegas which are spectacular. I think the hard rock in New Orleans is getting that when they remove the poor souls that were trying to build it when a number of floors collapsed on top of their heads. You should watch the td Waterhouse implosion as it was kinda fun, the area is now a park and the Amway arena was built using the old police hq land I believe plus more. It was a mess trying to figure out where it went and the giant LED screen on I4 was a sore spot too.

By the way, I believe the height was only 500ft. I should know as I stood on top at completion doing the final snagging check before handover to the owner, then CEGB.

    • @davidthompson9138

Actually, I am mistaken. This chimney is the second on this site, built as part of a flue gas desulphurisation plant added more recently. I am sure someone out there will be able to confirm this and give relevant dates.
I worked on construction of the original chimney back in 1966/7, which must have been demolished previously to make way for the desulphurisation plant. The original chimney was 500ft high, for sure. I guess its demolition was much less spectacular to avoid risking damage to surrounding buildings and infrastructure.
      Apologies for previous misleading comments.
