During the final battle of Berlin in 1945 the general of the 12th army, Walther Wenck realized that the end of the war was coming, and instead of trying to defeat the advancing Soviet forces as his orders were, he used his army to create an escape corridor out of Berlin. For such an act he would surely have been sentenced to death, but instead he ended up being responsible for up to 250 000 people safely escaping the burning city of Berlin. For some this was a battle, for him this was a rescue operation.
To all the people making fun of the halftrack look at it this way, it's 1945 the war is about to end Germany's supply lines are gone and anything resembling support is non existent. At this point they were fighting just to survive. There wouldn't be any replacement parts for the vehicle so if it still functioned they used it.

This is absolutely not what the battle of Berlin was like. In reality, the Germans were actually trying to go west and surrender to the allies, but the soviets kept bombarding them, so the Germans had to fight their way through soviet lines and escort them to the other side of Elbe's shore so they could surrender to the allies. The battle could of ended with no casualties if they had just let the Germans surrender, but the Soviets had other plans.
You sure, doubt the volksturm or 1st SS leibstandarte or the Charlemagne or the mix of men from various divisions or the Hitler youth would just escape Berlin, they had every intent to fight until the end- but after it was apparent that the war was lost and the fuhrer commited suicide the reminents tried to move west

I'm a medicated veteran because of what I've seen and done in combat. I've lost four wives to the nightmares and mood swings. I've been fired from every job I've ever had because I had anger issues. I've drank everything made to get you high as well as every drug from speed to cocaine to peyote to mushrooms. I've smoked pot everyday since 1967. Nothing takes away the pain and the pride. I look around me and I realize that 3 out of 4 Vietnam vets are already dead. I realize more of my brothers died by suicide than were killed in the war by double. Who cares. There should be some dignity in old age but those who were stigmatized by the war are denied us. We fought and died for nothing. Who cares....it's old news.
