Oh, ffs... the 996 Turbo and 997.1 Turbo had ZERO issues with the IMS or bore scoring because they used the Hans Mezger GT1 motor which was completely different than the rest of the models, except for the GT3 variants.
Indeed... So much talk about the IMS and the bore scoring... Yes it happens, but there are ways to reduce the risk. First the 2006 and onwards models were fitted with a bigger IMS to solve the early 997 and 996 issues there. Then, you can fit a lower temperature thermostat too, which can help reduce the bore score, as well as going easy with the car until it's at normal temperature and change the oil religiously too. When you read forums, everyone seems to be scared and affected, and of course some cars are affected, but most aren't! The examples in the video were cheaper as they were Tiptronic. And the cheaper priced ones are often not stock, high mileage (80k+ miles), incomplete service hist, private sellers, terrible over-revs report (if manual), high number of owners. There's quite a variance in the UK prices for 997 Turbo's. Decent manual examples with around 30k miles probably are priced around £65-70k from specialists, and a decent Tiptronic prob closer to £55k. Nice cars.

Dream car!
When I was 22( I'm 58 now) I bought a used Porsche 944s. It was mint but need some maintenance. Brakes, $2000. clutch $2000.00 Timing belt/water pump $2000,00. Seemed like everything was $2000.00..lol. I ended up smashing it but damn it was an amazing car to drive. I always said it was the poor mans Porsche cause I couldn't afford a 911 slant..lol
Absolutely love this vid!! I can't speak for much as I have a 924, my fav ever porsche is a 924 careera gt but 911? Has to be a 997 911 GT3! but Porsche really makes some incredible cars that are so underrated even if it's just a Carrera 2 or 4. My dad's friend has a 1989 911 turbo with just 12,000 miles on it, it's serviced every year at Porsche and he's been offered 300k trade in value which I think is absolutely insane but in some ways with the way cars are going and petrol prices and the incredibly rare opportunity I think 911s will be a great investment no matter what you go for
Showing my age here 😂 911 2.7rs for me. It's the one that made me want to own a 911. I eventually managed to buy a 996.2 C4S manual..... Yes, one of those, with clutch, ims, rms. I love it, so planted and made a cayman 2.7 that I recently tried, feel gutless and fragile. 😊
I have a 2006 997 c2s with upgraded IMS and lower temperature thermostat and various other mods... It's a cracking car to look at, and a cracking car to drive. There are a few cars with bore score issues but only about 5% are affected so not a massive deal. And if it comes, do the work, bore it to 4l and supercharge it to have about 490 bhp... Money would be easily recouped. As for the 997.1 turbo, it's fabulous and with the Metzger engine it's bullet proof!!! And... The official 0-60 mph figure for the 997.1 turbo is way off... 3.8s becomes more like 3.4s... and some have even gone below that time too. Porsche's 0-60 figs are often very conservative...😂🧐 If this car is not a supercar, what is??!!?!?! My best mate has one and it's the only car to ever scare me, because its speed is not something you are used to, at all.
My favorite is the one I can hopefully afford in a couple years, a 991.1 S or 4S. With all Porsche it’s about mileage and special models but for the money the last NA engined 911 is my choice for best performance for dollar while still being a somewhat analog car. Of course there are other models I’d choose if I were wealthy but I’m not, but this car is still quite modern looking and performs very well. Prices are not falling like most other cars but as th economy crumbles I’m hoping they’ll fall a little bit. I’d get one now but gotta pay off the 981BoxS first hahaha
A 964 turbo (the one Will Smith drove in the original Bad Boys) would be a lovely thing to own. I'd be very happy with one. I had a Basalt Black 996 C4 for around 15 years. Really shouldn't have sold it, it was a bloody lovely car and remains the best driving car I've owned - the only thing I felt let it down was the gearbox (I've always driven manuals, and the Honda S2000 I had previously to the Porsche, whilst simply nowhere near as a good a car, had an amazing "rifle bolt" precise gear box that I guess I've compared all other cars I've owned subsequently to). If I look to get into another Porsche it's likely to be either a 996 or 997 C4S.
I owned a 997 C2S for 2 years. I loved the drive, but was disapointed in the build quality. In the two years, the car needed a new gear box, had a leak form the sun roof and battery died. All were fixed under warranty, but this is not the point. I expect more for this brand…..
Would have added earlier cars like 67S, 68L, 73RS but agreed on the maybe best ever GT1! So much love for it I made correct size molds for the series 1 GT1. If you want one one day HMU

A 964 as a great value???? I’m on my third air cooled and have been following the market for decades. These are GREAT cars, but they are so highly overpriced and overvalued they are absolutely NOT a great value. In fact I’m watching for the bubble on them to burst. It’s a combo of restomod shops buying this generation and typical hype cycle around certain models that artificially inflate prices. Love your content but you missed the mark on this one. It might be that you’re comparing this model within the generation.
You will notice the 991.1 GT3 is the only GT3 selling below list and cheaper now than the previous 2 generations of GT3s that have well appreciated due to many issues with these cars. The choice to only offer a PDK gearbox was very unpopular with the GT3 community. Hence previous 997.2 GT3s jump immediately over their list prices when this car came put due to those wanting manuals. This was the car that Porsche sent letters to over 1000 owners to park their cars and not drive them due to catastrophic engine failures. Despite Porsche replacing over 1000 engines, they can still be prone to failure. As Porsche's first car with 4 wheel steering, the system was not tuned as well as later generations and car be quirky at times. This car lost the racing heritage of the previous cars. When this car came out, the GT3 RSR and Cup racing versions were still running Mezger engines as Porsche was not confident in racing the new 9A1 engine. They also never raced the PDK transmission. Race cars ran a true sequential manual gearbox instead. This is really the one GT Porsche to avoid. You would be better off putting a Cayman GT4 on your list which is lower in price, has a manual and is more reliable.
The best 911 for the buck is the 991.1 GTS. Last year of the naturally aspirated GTS. Super reliable too. Wont drain your bank account. Highly collectible too.
In U.K. I’m seeing a very obvious softening of prices. Not uncommon to see £5K to even £20K knocked off cars which they’ve had since late summer. Just not being bought any more. Now, in my opinion, while it’s attractive if you’re considering entering 911 ownership, it’s not good if you’re an owner who paid overs when acquiring your vehicle. I’m new to Porsche, and I’m Catholic to model and variant. That makes me a bad customer because I am not going to fall in love instantly with a particular example, at which point you’ve not bargaining power. I’m looking to invest up to £100K in the most resealable car. I don’t mind if it’s a late 997, any of the 991s or potentially even a 992. My wife and I will hit this hard in a six week period from immediately after Christmas. Who buys a 911 in the middle of a British winter?
The 996 is hands down best value. The stink of the 996 drags values down but the turbo has a Metzger engine instead making it reliable and powerful. Upgrade the suspension and you’re golden.
Never been a huge 911 fan so tough to pick a favourite, I grew up with the 996 but the headlights really don't work. Drove a 997 C2S on track, but the tyres/brakes were screwed so that put me off those (although now I like the 997 generally). I feel like a 991 C2S is probably actually what I'd want to drive most, but I'd get most excited about seeing a 993 GT2 so I'm going with that.
Dude, who has $85,000? I gotta buy Bread and Eggs... Also, the cheaper the Porsche is, tha harder it is to drive around the block- without calling a tow truck...
996 4S for 16K? Not in the US, not even with Tiptronic. They're routinely going for $30-40K, depending on mileage. Coupe with 6-speed manual are the most sought-after.
The 993 from across the pond looks so much better without the blackout "teeth" front bumperettes. It's so much prettier. The best 911 is the 2010 Sport Classic.
My favorite : 997.2 C4S ( lower $ ) , but for more $ probably a 997.2. turbo S , or GT3 *** All in manual 6spd !! I don't believe in PDK ( believe it exists ... but not for me)
The name Porsche brings two things to mind. 1./ They make ugly f’n cars. 2./ They can’t count. 994, 993, 996, 997, 991, 992. WTF. This is the craziest Shyt ever.
If you are willing to spend $50k on engine rebuild, water and break lines, etc., then go for it. That's not including replacing and / or repairing interior seats and broken plastic components.
Your ego is as big as your enthusiasm, which can get in the way of clear thinking and basic understanding of the English language. Listen up man, just my opinion based on other presentations by RUclips mechanic reviews.
My statement was based on the RUclips video "Why you should never buy a Porsche 997, different than the Porsche you featured, however, will/could/probably/will need same issues fixed beyond engine rebuild. 0:02 easily fixed items are not repaired or replaced that should be done when the engine is dropped.
Or get a 991.1 GTS and avoid the headaches
The best 911 for the buck is the 991.1 GTS. Last year of the naturally aspirated GTS. Super reliable too. Wont drain your bank account. Highly collectible too.
1993 RS America is my dream 911
Prices up north are still strong . Dealers rule the roost, and they ain’t for giving any discounts. Even on ropey 15 year old 997s .
I luv my 2012 991.1 S ...moving up from a 996 4S
997.2 IIs the one I love the most
The 996 is hands down best value. The stink of the 996 drags values down but the turbo has a Metzger engine instead making it reliable and powerful. Upgrade the suspension and you’re golden.
Yeah, hope you can afford bills that outstrip its value!
@@chriscarbaugh3936it's not expensive to maintain especially if you do the work yourself
Still have to maintain these cars. These are 100k plus cars and that's what you have to maintain.
964 is my fav
My favorite is my 911. That’s a 991.1 Targa😀
I remember when 964's were hated
Dude, who has $85,000? I gotta buy Bread and Eggs...
Also, the cheaper the Porsche is, tha harder it is to drive around the block-
without calling a tow truck...
930 no further argument thank you. I have a 1989 Ruf and would not trade it for an Enzo. Great video though
996 4S for 16K? Not in the US, not even with Tiptronic. They're routinely going for $30-40K, depending on mileage. Coupe with 6-speed manual are the most sought-after.
911 R please 🤤
991 c4s all day !!
'be there or be square'
looks like he didnt go.
993s start with 272 hp and not 250. Varioram from 1996 had 285 hp.
He spoke so quick the words merged..
The 993 from across the pond looks so much better without the blackout "teeth" front bumperettes. It's so much prettier. The best 911 is the 2010 Sport Classic.
I'd like to have my 997 back.
Not a Targa in sight. Shame on you 😂
My favorite : 997.2 C4S ( lower $ )
, but for more $ probably a 997.2. turbo S , or GT3
*** All in manual 6spd !! I don't believe in PDK ( believe it exists ... but not for me)
The 997.2 Turbo S was only offered with PdK, no manual…
The name Porsche brings two things to mind. 1./ They make ugly f’n cars. 2./ They can’t count. 994, 993, 996, 997, 991, 992. WTF. This is the craziest Shyt ever.
There is no 994, you mean 964 .
993 turbo
If you are willing to spend $50k on engine rebuild, water and break lines, etc., then go for it. That's not including replacing and / or repairing interior seats and broken plastic components.
Could you be a bit more vague please? Thanks.
Your ego is as big as your enthusiasm, which can get in the way of clear thinking and basic understanding of the English language. Listen up man, just my opinion based on other presentations by RUclips mechanic reviews.
@@paulcampise3050 Are you replying to me or talking to yourself?
My statement was based on the RUclips video "Why you should never buy a Porsche 997, different than the Porsche you featured, however, will/could/probably/will need same issues fixed beyond engine rebuild. 0:02 easily fixed items are not repaired or replaced that should be done when the engine is dropped. 911 Targa 4 s
All of these cars except for the 996 are going up in value - not down.
Which makes it good value as they’re an amazing road car
@@2702simmo Had a 996, and never bonded with it. Honestly, it wasn’t amazing at anything.
It was like a Honda Accord with substandard 911 looks.
Even the previous & post decade of 911s look better than the 996.
@@biffbifford402 each to their own I guess had mine over 3 years and best car I’ve owned particularly compared to more powerful cars I’ve had
@@biffbifford402 I own a Ferrari 355 F1 Spider and a 996 2003 C2 and guess what, I love the car and have owned it 11 years now. I don't follow people and have my own opinion on everything and I love the headlights. I also own a 928 GTS and previous to that a 1976 911 Targa.
@@desiday7070 After the 996 I had an MX5, Lotus Elise, and now a C8 HTC.
The C8 is hands down the best all around sports car of the all.
a 986 boxster gives you 70% of 911 experience, and has the (smaller displacement but the same 911) engine in a better location, and costs 2/3 less.
Please bracket correctly.
73 911S.
I have a convertible 1992 C2 cab, and a 2008 C4S. Love them both! They are like a sexy, expensive mistress that I love to take out for long dates 🙃
996 turbo S
Please stop all the arm waving. Its frightfully irritating.
hi 997 gen 2 3;6
997.2 GTS
Woah 911
Ahh yes of course the price of a Porche is measured in the amount of cokaine you get for the same money ;) (it sounds like he say gram when he say the cost of the car).
997.1tt
The 996 is cheap because it’s not as reliable as well as the front lights. Bore scoring ims bearing these are a steer clear of car.
This current 911 and one generation back are the only ones that don't look like crap
Please speak even faster....
I dont like Porsche`s. Mostly overpriced.Better cars available for a lot less money.
Disagree entirely
LOL you have no idea what you're talking about.
Calm down.
