    Watching in 2022, reminiscing...man, those were the days - Jut a little while ago, I was playing the reissued mono LPs Please Please Me (after watching Fab Gab) and With the Beatles. Why in God's name did Apple take them all out of print?

    I completely relate to your initial thoughts (justifications) on buying the albums individually and then the change of mind that followed with new thoughts (justifications). I find myself doing the same thing at times. As a collector you made the right choice. It was fun to watch your thought process from the vantage point of already owning the stereo box set.

    I didn't pick this set up in 2014 because I owned the compact disc collection which I thought sounded like ****. They sounded muddy while the stereo mixes sounded vibrant and full of life. I didn't know these were mastered differently until recently! It's like listening to the Beatles all over again!!!!!! I decided to complete my Parlophone collection last month by adding "Please Please Me" and "With the Beatles" in mono (the only way to go is mono for those). Now I can't stop buying them individually. They sound amazing. They have gone up in value astronomically if you buy them separately. I truly missed out on this set :-(. I wish I had picked up this box set instead of paying double for the records I picked up. "The White Album", "Rubber Soul" and "Revolver' are still available at Barns & Noble at retail cost (around $23) but Sgt. Pepper is raking in $130 for the 2014 mono cut.The rest go for a decent amount too.The only upside to buying them individually is the hype sticker that peels off with ease so you can stick it onto onto the protective sleeve I house the vinyl in. I'm a big fan of hypes stickers! Nice review. :-)

    The Mono vinyl box is now apparently OOP. Most of the individual LP's are as well. This vinyl set is one of the best things that Apple has ever released and it's an essential addition to any Beatles vinyl collection. Even though I own all the original 1st press mono UK's. These pressings might even sound better than the originals in some cases.

  • @ClarenceFisher
    @ClarenceFisher 10 лет назад +1

    As of yesterday, I have Please Please Me, With the Beatles and A Hard Day's Night - I haven't played the third one yet, but I'm wondering if I should be concerned that the grooves are much smaller than those of the original Parlophones. I have the second, third and fourth Beatle albums on original Parlophone in mono and the grooves are wider in the 1964 pressings. Smaller grooves usually indicate compression as Columbia House vinyl always was.
    NOW - I did the piecemeal thing and finally got all the LPs as well as the book. LOVE the book.

  • @ClarenceFisher

    What a beautiful looking set. Right now I'm debating whether or not to go with the economy version - getting one LP at a time, going chronologically, of course. I have this fantasy of being 18 year old in 1963 and buying all the albums as they were released, and hearing their musical maturity develop over time. How would I feel about "my" Beatles changing the way they did? Who's to know? I suppose it's okay that I was born in 1963 and heard the albums out of order (AKA as my older siblings brought them in - Rubber Soul target label in 1971, Help apple reissue in 1973, and so on). I didn't know the difference, I love all the albums, although it took a while to warm up to Please Please Me. The incarnation I knew was Vee Jay's "Introducing the Beatles", and I wasn't very keen on it because I Want to Hold Your Hand and She Loves You were not on it. I didn't know what THOSE songs were. Never heard them before, and it wasn't Capitol - so I thought it must be some sort of rip-off. It was $2.99 at Woolworths, so you KNOW it was a counterfeit pressing.
    A couple of years ago, I picked up the mono LP version of Ram, and it sounded exquisite. After a few more playings, I started to hear typical vinyl noise, and decided to record it onto my hard drive and make an Mp3 file out of it, which is now on my I-Tunes account as well as the pod.

    Oh wow so they are packaged exactly like their "Beatles In Mono" compact disc counterparts with the little plastic sleeves! That's cool, although I agree with you Joe it's probably best to find a sturdier sleeve. Too much of an investment here to leave anything to chance. Man that book is as nice as the one that came with "The Beatles In Stereo" vinyl box and is definitely more in depth that what CD collectors got with the compact disc mono set. For what it's worth I've seen some collectors sell the book from the stereo box set on it's own so maybe you can pick that one up too Mayo without investing in the stereo records.

    I do not have this special set, but just ordered Capitol albums vol. 2 box and The Japan Box I also have a japanese early years box with vinyl singles from Polydor recordings, It do not know which period of The Beatles you like the most but I saw some indication in a vid that you are really into the Capitol label albums and those duophonic mixes, that you are not as into the albums from the U.S, album boxed set that sound polished in a different way but has some in unique mixes in their own right. I have some of those that I have found separate, such as the 2014 releases of Beatles VI, EARLY BEATLES and Yesterday and Today together with Capitol vol, 1 boxed set.

    2. "Yes It Is" (from 9 April 1965 B-side of "Ticket to Ride") Lennon, McCartney and Harrison 2:42
    3. "I'm Down" (from 23 July 1965 B-side of "Help!") McCartney 2:38
    4. "Day Tripper" (from 3 December 1965 double A-side) Lennon and McCartney 2:52
    5. "We Can Work It Out" (from 3 December 1965 double A-side) McCartney with Lennon 2:15
    6. "Paperback Writer" (from 10 June 1966 A-side) McCartney 2:26
    7. "Rain" (from 10 June 1966 B-side) Lennon 3:01
    I enjoy listening to it.

    Re: the sticky resealable protective sleeves. Just re-seal the clear sleeve's sticky bit once you've taken out the record. Then you don't have to worry about it catching on the record's sleeve.
    Also, best to keep the whole set with the original protective sleeves as issued. Unless they're totally generic. That box will offer enough protection against dings etc.

    Hey Jude
    Revolution
    Only a Northern Song
    All Together Now

    I wish I bought the mono set now. I've only realised that yes, the stereo records have been ripped from the remastered cds.
    It also says it on the back of the box set that they have been ripped from the cds.
    So what is the point in owning the stereo version if it's the same as the cds?! Now I am wishing I spent a little more and purchased the mono set. I guess it should be common sense that the songs were originally recorded in mono, so the mono set would be more authentic.

Acoustic Sounds seems to be the only online seller that has all the individual mono's and the box set still available. Back in the late 80s I purchased a brand new UK import of Rubber Soul. The one thing that I noticed, as well as a couple of other UK LPs I owned at the time, was that the covers were very lightweight as compared to US covers. Kind of flimsy. I had a Japanese With the Beatles, but that cover was sturdy like the US. It might have been the way British record companies were packaging their LPs in the 80s.I can't see them using those covers in the 60s. How are the covers for these?

    • @MeanMrMayo
      @MeanMrMayo  8 лет назад

      The UK imports (and other countries) were always made less sturdy. That's just one of their basic features. I would say the new re-issues are a big more sturdy, if anything, though.

    Hi Mean Mr. Mayo, Thanks for posting this video. I got the same box myself only the Stereo version of the records. I've noticed that your White Album is numbered. Mine is not. Any ideas why that is. I thought non-numbered White Album meant re-issued. I appreciate your help.

    • @MeanMrMayo
      @MeanMrMayo  8 лет назад

      +Freddy Soto - I don't know why they decided not to number the Stereo White Albums. Originally in the '60s, the covers were numbered... and then with the later re-issues in the '70s they were gone.

    Question. Where can I get a copy of the 'Mono Masters' CD? And the rest of the Mono CDs, too? Can I get them individually, or do I have to shell out my money for the box? Also, are the CDs made from digital mono mixes or the actual 1960s analogue tapes like the vinyl? Thanks for the help!

    • @MeanMrMayo
      @MeanMrMayo  8 лет назад

      +Jack Stedron -- I know the Mono vinyl was taken from the analog but I'm not sure about the CD Set. Last I heard, you could only get the Mono CDs as part of the set, not individually. Right now I guess online ordering is your best option to get the box. Amazon or another site.

    • @MeanMrMayo
      @MeanMrMayo  9 лет назад

      Jon Gossard For me it depends on the song itself. Some songs I prefer in Mono, and others in Stereo. But as a rule I guess I like Mono in general from PLEASE PLEASE ME to RUBBER SOUL, and then Stereo for all the albums after that. I might have to see how I can work this all into a video.

    Hey, I have another question.
    Not too long ago, I got a cable for my turntable and I was recording all my Beatles records, and I'm collecting the Beatles in Mono on vinyl. A few weeks ago, I was recording the Mono Masters album, and a half of side 2 and side 3 sounded VERY fuzzy and scratchy. Does your copy sound like that?
    SIDE 2
    Komm, Gib Mir Deine Hand- sounds fine.
    Sie Liebt Dich- sounds okay, I mean. Its whatever.
    Long Tall Sally- sounds fuzzy.
    Slow Down- very fuzzy sounding. Skipped a bit on my record player
    Matchbox- kinda fuzzy on the vocals and drums
    I Feel Fine- guitar sounds very static-y. Like on a bad receiver
    She's A Woman- really fuzzy on the guitar
    SIDE 3 (This is where it gets really bad)
    Bad Boy- This one actually sounds fine
    Yes It Is- vocals sound incredibly fuzzy. Starts out okay, ends up getting worse
    I'm Down- Paul's vocals sound fuzzy.
    Day Tripper- This one just sounds horrible. It sounds like I'm listening to it in a car radio, and the car goes into a tunnel
    We Can Work It Out- This one sounds the same way the last one sounds
    Paperback Writer- This one starts off horrible, and then after the first chorus, the needle skips to the end of the track
    Rain- sounds horrible for five/six seconds, then the needle skips to the end of the record.
    And then Side 4 sounds just fine. It actually sounds really good!
    It sounds like I have some dust on the record, or something is wrong with my needle. My needle is fairly new, I had it since November, and its the one that came with my record player (Audio Technica). I got the Mono Masters record the same day, and I clean the records every time before I play it. Sorry for such a long question, btw.

    • @JackSProductions98
      @JackSProductions98 8 лет назад

      +Jack Stedron Also, 'Revolution' sounds a little fuzzy, but I think that was intended

      @MeanMrMayo  8 лет назад

      I have played a few. Just so much other stuff to listen to, and of course I know these songs so well that I rarely go for the reissues.

    • @JackSProductions98
      @JackSProductions98 8 лет назад

      Hey, I just listened to them again. They all sound the same, but 'Paperback Writer' and 'Rain' didn't skip. Maybe because last time I recorded it, I might have bumped it. But it still sounds very fuzzy. I listened to a lot of these songs on the mono versions of the US Albums, and they don't sound fuzzy. Maybe because those are the Capitol mixes, and these are taken from the digital masters. These are the mono parlophone mixes, taken from the original analog tapes, if I'm not mistaken. I hope there's nothing wrong with my record player. The rest of my mono albums sound great, and the rest of THIS album, besides sides 2 and 3 sound great

    Please Help! How does one tell if they're buying a genuine original UK issue cover sleeve vs. a reissue cover? The artwork is so similar!

    • @MeanMrMayo
      @MeanMrMayo  7 лет назад

      bongo twocanchoo - First, be sure the back edges of the cover have a "flap" folded over on the top and bottom edges. If the cover is too clean and new looking too it's probably a re-issue. But you're best off Googling and finding more info online.

    • @BarryBirther
      @BarryBirther 7 лет назад

      Thanks-That's what I mean. The 2014 reissues are really good reproductions-they do have the fold-back covers...I can see a lot of unsuspecting novice collectors getting duped...

    • @MeanMrMayo
      @MeanMrMayo  7 лет назад

      bongo - That's why I'm not generally a big fan of exact duplicate reissues. I like there to be something substantial on the back cover to denote that this is a re-release. These are so perfect that really the best way to tell an old original is that it just will not look as new and perfect. The original UK albums don't usually hold up so well and almost always look aged.

    Nice set! I'm Jealous! lol
    You should at least pick up Abbey Road and Let It Be Stereo albums!;)
    Was The White Album preferred by The Beatles In Mono or Stereo? I honestly prefer the Stereo version! I honestly prefer mostly of the Beatles albums In Stereo, to me, I don't care, It's what I enjoy, picking stereo versions of the early UK albums Is no different than picking The US albums! But at least George Martin mixed the stereo albums, unlike having nothing to do with the US albums!

    • @MeanMrMayo
      @MeanMrMayo  10 лет назад

      ***** Hi Donald - I'm with you; I actually prefer the Stereo "White Album" myself. There are actually some mixes on the US albums which sound better to me than the mixed UK versions. Some of the US ones sound more "alive" to me somehow, not as "tame". I have thought about buying ABBEY ROAD and LIB individually.
