Robert Earl Keen and Lyle Lovett stopped by KUTX's Studio 1A to share stories and perform a few songs with Jay Trachtenberg and a very excited studio audience.
I just discovered REK over this Christmas holiday when his Merry Christmas from the Family was played on the radio. Then I listened to a couple of his other songs, and now I feel like I've discovered somebody brand new, even though I know most of you watching this have known about him for a long time. So glad I know about him now. You can see the joy in him when he plays. This man is a light in our world.
You know when a singer songwriter has done a good job. You know because he makes you say "I've felt that way before" or "I know just what he's singing about" or as we see below... "That place he's singing about, it's real, I've been there" Some of you may not want to acknowledge it, but I will... There's a cord, or string, or whatever you want to call it inside of you, and when you feel that lump in your throat or that moisture in the corner of your eye, you know that's because REK reached inside you and gave that emotional cord a tug. When a singer songwriter does that you know he's succeeded.
Atta favorite watering hole on Okinawa back in the mid 90s. A spot where young-ish enlisted (no knuckleheads admitted), senior enlisted and (a select few) younger officers would hang without any *fraternizing* concerns. Play steel-tip darts, drink, conversate, enjoy oldie and contemporary tunes. Ole gal behind the bar, name of Linda, threw on this REK cd and I was hooked from the first notes. She was a peach; 90 percent softie but you knew she's a toughhie if need be (not required). Week before I left Okinawa, after a three year stretch, her parting gift... her "Picnic" CD, listend happily to all that time. Personal top shelf CD to this day. Likely never to interact w/ Mr. Keen, yet his music and words will last with me til I'm on Boot Hill. And I ain't even from Texa-Homa
visited Big Bend National Park and Boquillas Mexico back in 2000 and this song is dead on in describing the experience over there. Great lyrics and even better song.
Absolutely classic REK - fantastic in every way Could, and often do, listen to him all day Wonderful and very cool to see him him playing this with just his guitar and a microphone
This song and the YT comments on that video, helped me discover Big Bend and the magical little towns in that area. Thank you REK and the YT algorithm!
This is such a beautiful song. Lyrically, it's subtle and compelling; I think the words are no less than an updated version of Matthew Arnold's "Dover Beach." Robert Earl Keen deserves props from every demographic.
This song is about Boquillos Crossing, inside Big Bend National Park, and Boquillos del Carmen, a little town just up the hill from the Rio Grande. The crossing is still there, and you can still take a boat across and ride a donkey up the hill.
Had the opportunity to listen to the "...crusty caballero..." play on the street in the town REK wrote this song about. Visited "...the town's best bar..."
I imagine this song about someone standing atop the mountain at the beginning imagining all of the things REK sings, but it is just a day dream since they are still standing on top of the same mountain where she says, "we'd better go."
Just read an article by Robert Earl Keen in which he says all this is real - it's a visit to Boquillas, Mexico. I read it in Garden & Gun magazine, June/July 2021. Eventually G&G posts its articles free on line.
you cant not like earl keen if you any respect for music. you have to respect grabbing your guitar and singing a story and truley feeling the emotion in the music. thats the REAL sound of Texas
Worked at a bar where he played for us...coolest guy ever. Got to see him twice for free!!
Damn Rad.
The greatest Texas song writer. Period!
Thank you for your love towards my music, hope you don’t stop listening someday?
I am guessing that is not the real REK, lol. I have to agree he is my favorite as well, although there are several I love.
@@robertearlkeen7285 Im glad I recently discovered you.

Me, too.
Never too late to find good stuff. Plenty out there too.
It’s a crime that normal folks have to look for artists like Mr. Keen when our radio stations are filled with mostly crap.
@@peterwright4647 yup.

What are you? A fucking idiot? Listen and shut up.
@@lynnmiller3937 if only you would take your own advice.
REK is one of my absolute favorite singer/songwriters.

20yrs and counting...still hits me the same as the first time. Amazing
I have lived this song. It's perfect.
One of the best REK songs. He was my second concert ever....did not disappoint.
Nice to see a video of REK after listening to his music all these years.
I always pause and listen when Robert sings and plays. Gig em.

What a detailed story REK's songs tell. I saw him in Knoxville and it was a great show.

I really appreciate your comments and love towards my music, have you ever been to any of my live concerts?
I had forgotten this song and found it again so I saved it. Love it

Absolutely perfect
Classic and wonderful.
I've been to big bend in 1996-97 and I can guarantee like the other guy says. This is what the song is about.
Great musicianship
Two of the greatest singers
Great video! This is the kind of music we need!
First heard this in 2002.
I'll always hold this song close to my heart.. 💙

Two of the Great ones, even though they were aggies. We need to hear more from them these days.
lol for real i did
Oh no...a non-Aggie fan. Hehe.

REK is the definition of Texas music
Just doesn't get any better than this...mesmerizing stuff right here.
Wish I had seen Keen live. Still trying to see Lovett.
Saw him in Santa Cruz CA awesome
Love these two guys, Texas
Awesome song by an awesome singer.
Saw them live in WF best performance ever both gracious and humble which makes awesome when blended with such talent.

Amazing musicians….It’s just the two of them and they sound perfect…..just beautiful.
Nice tribute to Marty Robbins included in this great song.
In the live version on apple music/spotify, its an even better tribute
@@williamstewart102on the PBS broadcast is another
Listening to REK is like watching a movie.
How fortunate to be in the audience. Wow.
REK is the GOAT! Hands down
Rock on brother! Not sure of the GOAT. Don't care ... rock on!!!
Thinking of my old friend the big bamboo, you done this way better..rip. Tom
Pretty song.
Some friends from Fort Davis just introduced the song to my co-worker, Curt.
awesome song
You can tell that song just teleported Lyle to another place.
I'd like to see REK, Lyle Lovett, and John Hiatt get together, and do a "Highwaymen" or "Travelling Wilburys" like project. That would be neat!
The definition of a gentleman: wears a tie when he doesn’t have to

Merry Christmas, friends.
Been there.
He did a great job with a buzz on.
huh ?
Las Boquillas. great song
Lyle is in love
What a sweet sweet song .. makes one want to be young and in love again. Sigh !
What is with the plastic bottled water I see on most shows ? Really !
Las Boquillas. . just a few hours due south of me.
Yeah, but they weren't young. I always interpreted it as a middle aged couple, that had known each other a long time, then got married.
Is there a way to get a copy of this concert on CD or something... really wonderful.... Stephen
Lyle, move, blink something!!
How do we access the full airing?
Im never coming back ether.. some o one can you help
Green go's congrats!
Grate
I wanted Lyle Lovett, you never let him do anything---Bad Boy--I dfont like that.
what is Lyle Lovett and his goofy hair gonna play after that??
what a great comment
so true
@@margemiller6923 love me some Robert Earl...
" You're Not from Texas"
great song. great video. The mic needs improvement....
This would’ve been great with Peter Mills as well.
cooler then Steve Earle
Probably a much nicer guy too!
Great song! I detected a bit of "Pinball Wizard" in it.
Well done REK. Man, Lyle is a straight up ghoul 😶
What the fuck did Mr Lovett do?
Contrary to popular belief Lyle was only a cardboard cut-out.
does it best at hardly strictly bluegrass
