  • Thank you so much for all of your questions and interest in my unschooling videos. Several folks asked what we DO and what a typical day looks like for us. That is SUCH a hard question to answer, because every day looks different.
We DO like to spend time apart on our own interests and pursuits, but we also love to come together and get outside in nature. We love to hike as a family, so let's look at what a typical weekend day for an unschooling family of 6 looks like, and my thoughts on why this time is so important for our wellbeing and learning.

I love Bea's immitation of how people ask the awful question of "how will they be ready for the real world without school?"
When I got that question about my daughter, I would point out that the real world is already happening all around us, and she is actually living in it, and learning from experience.

When I'm in the woods, I can see the magic everywhere. It takes me back to being a child and there are sprites and elves around any corner. Just can just breathe easier.

Thanks for sharing! I do think that hiking with young humans is incredibly rewarding you just have to plan for their interests and needs and set expectations reasonably. I went huckleberry picking with my toddles and they ran back and forth on the same section of trail and rolled in the dirt. Luckily I picked a spot that had berries right off the head of the trail. The love our adventures and pack their gear and think deeply about the plans and preparation.
It isn’t easy or for everyone but I would encourage people to try as nature belongs them too.

I've spent all morning binge watching your unschooling videos. I've been homeschooling (mainly unschooling) my kids most of their life and now they are 14 and 17 and I find it's been more challenging finding content on unschooling teens. I am loving your videos!!

It's neat seeing a hike that looks so different from ones in our area. We are at the passively or actively wanting to stop the hike phase still. Hope your surgery and recovery are going well

I have commented before about unschooling my three daughters. It’s way more fun for parents and kids. My three are now an attorney, an RN, and another recent college graduate with a double major. My attorney reminds me of Bea!

I hope you're recovering well! I really appreciate these unschooling topics. I would love to hear more about your experience unschooling when they were little. How do you meet all of their needs when they're different ages for example an 8 year old and a newborn. I kind of feel like I'm flailing over here with four kiddos and would love some of your perspective.

How do you stay "on budget" with unschooling? I found that following rabbit trails and interests ended up costing us a lot and I dealt with a lot of pressure to pay for every thing or class they had an interest in. Do you have a set budget? Do you have them decide what they want to do at the beginning of the "school" year so you can plan for the expense of what they are interested in?

    • @ParkrosePermaculture
      @ParkrosePermaculture  Год назад +1

that's a great question! We definitely have a set budget and if my kids want to do something outside of it, we figure out a way to fundraise (Ruth and Bea are adults, so they might sell some artwork off their Instagram to pay for something special they want to do).
In December, we do talk out what kinds of trips or projects and outings the kids want to focus on for the year and then we price it out.
Our biggest expense is Bea doing Mock Trial for the last four years. It has been VERY spendy, but something we felt was important to budget for and provide for her because she is SO passionate about the law.

"How are kids ready for the real world if they didnt go to highschool?"
Really? I cant name a single thing I learned in highschool that actually helped me in "the real world" didnt learn how to do taxes or get a job, or survive at all! That knowledge came from my parents and google searches.

We aren’t in their nesting range and we found several areas where large mounds of organic material were piled up with these holes/dens that were quite deep. I almost wondered if they were ant mounds that had been raided for the larvae?

It varies a lot from state to state. And in some countries outside of the US, it is illegal.

I live in what is known as a “private school” state, which means homeschooling parents aren’t required to report to the gov any more than a private school. (Texas)
