This is easily one of the more interesting BVR dogfights I've seen in awhile. That whole AIM-7 vs AA-10 and Fox1 tactics is not seen as often in DCS content. How would the combo of Viper and Eagle have fared against late 1980s Su-27 and MiG-29? How would Hornet plus Tomcat fared? I dont' think the late 80s Hornet had JHMCS... at least I never heard of the Hornet having that until I got into DCS!
Hornet pilot did a good job jettisoning his stores in the first round but in the second round he still had sparrows and tanks onboard during a rolling scissor. That lead to his demise for sure. If i was longshot tho I would have started fuel dumping and fox 1 dumping prior to the dogfight too.
Yeah. Good match up! Whoever was in the hornet was a very skillful pilot. Hornets have a way of reeling you into a slow, low energy position and then recover faster than you. I've seen many AF debriefing videos where they put the bandit into that same position you were in round 1. Good job in round 2 of not letting him get you slow and using what the Sukhoi is good at. You're a great pilot LS. Good content as always!
Hornet is unusual in the teen series. It’s almost behaving like Russian aircraft with the high alpha slow speed nose pointing ability. I know for a while they had f-18 aggressor aircraft with flanker paint scheme. Those were cool.
Good show 👊😎 You know for giggles just to see what it takes. I tried to commentary on a simple demo and it takes a lot of work and a talent to do YT videos. I sounded like a stuttering goose no pun intended with Maverick. But yeah and I tried about 10 times and it got a little better but not my thing. Awesome video and demonstration. I've been grinding real hard with the f-18, my first bird and as a Hilo pilot wanting to be a jet pilot. I couldn't figure out a better aircraft. I do have the f-14s but jester still has issues by the time he gives you the heads up on his 18-in radar screen. You already have him in the notch of your own. He should be telling you where the bogey is 100 miles out in an F-14 a Rio should with no problem. I end up having to go back and forth to look at the Rio radar dome and back in the seat. It's a lot better waiting on the Rio called jester. Going to wait till he can grow a pair so he'll quit ejecting and give me the tally. Until then I'm sticking in the f-18. I'm going on my 3rd month in the f-18. I hope to become vicious and wicked in it. Ty long shot. I use your videos as learning tools. I hope the rest do the same. Take care, aka 44 Dusty
13:06 the archers at the time didn't have that wide of a cone that the seekerhead could pivot. I think what may have happened was you shot and because of his angle he was able to move out of the seekerhead and the missile went stupid.
E variants entered service in 1987 WITH the su 27. But not with mig 29s. Mig 29s got equipped with them later on in the 90s. Logic being that the su27 was the long range fighter
@@mamo4731 from what I can find the MiG-29 first shipped with the R-27R and R-27T on exports after 1988 for the MiG-29A and 1986 for the MiG-29B. The Su-27 was first exported in the 90's and when it was it was shipped with the R-27ER and R-27ET. I have to be honest, it's very difficult to find a good source on this information, but I was looking at missilery dot info (I wrote it this way so RUclips doesn't autoremove my comment for sending a link). I found a few other sources that also say the ER and ET entered service in 1990 and none of the sources I saw gave any other date.
@@mamo4731 Just did so. Those are definitely R-27R missiles. It can be really hard to tell the difference but you can tell from how they are proportioned relative to the airframe and where the rear fins end relative to the back of the missile as well as the lack of a section where the missile gets thicker as they do on the ER and ET. Hopefully this comment doesn't sound condescending, I've been appreciating the civility.
When you fire a fox 1 the enemy RWR knows there is a missile launch but why is that? If you have already locked them in STT what does the radar do differently once a missile is fired? Isn't it still in STT?
It is still in STT, but now the RWR see a radar hitting and a return to different location or object, not the same object that the radar admission is coming from, that's one of the ways it knows a missile has been fired
Great video, absolutely love it. I know the MAR is the Minimum Abort Range, but what is the Mar and is it different for each aircraft or is it the same for all aircraft? Thanks
However they can be pretty easily spoofed since a recent patch denying a re-lock after a short amount of time if the radar loses track briefly. As well as DCSisms and the large notch filter that plagues the 29/27 FC3 planes. You see it switch to EO on the second shot in the first fight I think, poof, missile trashed.
And the correct missiles would be R-27R’s not ER’s, and at most maybe AIM-7M’s and likely only AIM-9L’s, in this video it’s AIM-9M’s because of the significantly reduced smoke coming out of the motor and the hornet wouldn’t have had the JHMCS at all at that time.
@@clanmeademagruder9692 Obviously agree on the JHMCS front, but the 27ER wasn't that far out from the standard R-27 being introduced tbh, likewise the 9M was around for majority of the 80s. Makes for better balancing if they were standard R-27s though of course. Don't forget the hornet being able to make those 7Ms loft if they were in fact Ms and not MH/Ps lol, they shouldn't be doing that. Just Hornet loft profile will override that...

It's always fun to watch Longshot back in the flanker. Guy's a real threat when in the cockpit of one of them.
Excellent example of Pre-flaring in that 1st fight..
Nice. These Cold War matchups are much more interesting than modern ones, IMO.

Always good to see some 1v1 but with the older weapons...
Agreed! That was one of the better 1v1 BVRs I've seen in a while. Nicely done!

That was NOT an easy match-up!

If I'm not mistaken the R-27ER and R-27ET entered Russian service in 1990, two years before the AIM-120 achieved it's first air to air kill in 1992.

Great fight! Love the cinematic views. 👍

When I saw the thumbnail, all I could think about was BFM set to "Blue Monday". 😅
In the second fight the Hornet didn't drop its tanks.
These cold war fox1 fights are sick. Maybe F16 vs. Mig29 next?
Following him low on the first engagement was risky as it turned out lel

The screaming of the Hornet turbines!!!
what missles are fox 1's?

awesome
Is there a chance one day that you might fly the SU-34 mod, please?
2nd time around Hornet forgot to dump his bags till last possible minute, would have had you as well.
Did you hit the cobra button for avoiding the missile in the last fight?

What is the difference between Aim9l and AIM9M performances?
Mig-29 vs f-15 fox-1?
Could you please make your voice a bit louder in the future? Because when im doing the volume down because of the loud Jet I cant hear you anymore!
There is no way you struggled this much when you had r-27ers and he has aim-7s, this has to be faked, your missiles have twice the range
