I bought this game for my son a long time back. He has played it for almost 700 hours and has been through many of the beta updates. He's back at it since it's been released and constantly shows me all the cool stuff they've added or changed since they released it. He even put it in ascii mode and said... this is confusing, but colorful! Makes me happy to see these kind of games are still around and fun.
It's been pretty fun. We had found Gnomoria and I had shown him that one. He started playing it until it went into limbo, and we picked up Ignomia when it showed up. We found KeeperRL due to the Steam "Games similar to what you have played" feature, and while I didn't really get into it very much, my son has played it for many, many hours. It's one of his top ten played games, right behind Terraria and Starbound (of which he has put in almost a couple of thousand hours each).
@@erichvereen1988 he may really like Necesse if he's that big of a fan of Terraria and Starbound. i've really been hooked on that one lately. it's pretty much a top down Terraria but has a big focus on building a working community of survivors. i know Terraria has the NPC villagers, but the system in Necesse is a bit more deep than that. it's damn cheap too and gets great support from the dev.
I want a lizardfolk faction for this game that lets you utilize water tiles for spawning rooms and the like. Summoning allies (more lizardfolk, tentacle monsters, water elementals, etc.) from water tiles, and creating water in places, would make for a cool magic too.
This game definitely seems like an introductory game to Dwarf Fortress meets Dungeon Keeper. Awesome game, I love seeing these styles of games and seeing that they are still alive and kicking. Added this one to the wish list thanks to you!
16:00 This is actually good UI design because it lets you tell the difference between upstairs and downstairs at a glance. Otherwise you'd kinda have to squint when you're zoomed out in order to see the little indent for the downstairs. Overall, it just makes things more readable.
Thank you Splat! Been waiting for your gameplay for hours after they released 1.0 for KeeperRL! This game is so addicting and proves that you don't require next gen graphics all the time for a good game!
And I didn't even pay for the DLC Horse Armour. The youngens wont get that reference. Well you confined me to get it. thanks for the great recap and lets play.
Had this game for years and it holds a high place in my library. One fantastic game. I believe there are some people who have never played KepperRL, yeah really, it's true, I know I didn't believe it either.
Putting the training room up front is such a dungeon keeper reflex Okay sure, dig in, here's 25 horn demons getting ripped, you gotta talk to them first
You made me think about the movie Braindead with the talk about the priest. The quote is "I kick ass for the lord" and that is the best way to quote any priest ever
This is a solid title I got years ago after one of your check-in videos about the progress. I didn't realize it had hit 1.0 though. Time to check it out again.
When he cut to it, it was like, Surprise! Him making no mention of its design made it way funnier to me. After the video, I had to scroll through all the positive comments just to make sure I wasn't the only one that has degen eyes. I was scrolling for a bit, which was crushing my spirit.
I'm so happy this game has finally fully released. I bought the game WAYYYYY back in like Alpha 12 times maybe even before that. I haven't played it as much as something like Rimworld but I feel like it's a great segway into the particular genre.
I always turn off Keep invasions, but in exchange I always send the Keeper out on any expeditions. Makes attacking a dragon....exciting. And horses. Got one-shot by a horse once.
If you're looking for a really good Dungeon Keeper heir, you should try War for the Overworld. It's even voiced by the original Dungeon Keeper voice actor...
i've had this game for years, and i love it! the 1.0 release has been great, but i can't wait for more content to be added! there's still a lot that feels missing with the game.
What's been up with some of Splat's videos being taken down shortly after being put up? I saw his video yesterday on a new gladiator game but then it was gone when I got around to watching it. I can't imagine small time devs are the ones taking them down given it's free publicity.
could be many things, splat giving wrong info/saying something he'd rather not have public, dev taking it down for whatever reason (embargos and such), and finally the most depressing reason, youtube algorithm not liking the video and burying it, affecting other videos/the channel
Yeah I've been told that if a video doesn't perform well within a certain timeframe it massively penalizes your channel in how the algorithm advertises it, so it's best to quickly take down underperforming videos@@1mpr0
bought this when you did your first video on it but wanted to wait until it was 1.0 (mostly just procrastinated getting into a new game), definitely going to get into it now
When did they add z-levels to this? Honestly wish they didn't ape Dwarf Fortress like that, I really liked the simplicity of having everything on one plane like in Dungeon Keeper, and of Boatmurdered-era DF.
He's referring the Berlin Interpretation. Many years ago the rouge community had a convention in Berlin where they tried to come up with a formal definition of what a 'rouge-like' is. If you search for 'rouge berlin Interpretation" you can find a link to it.
I'm going to be honest, I put 50 hours into this game and ended up hating it. Some of the stuff that made it miserable may have been fixed (the menus for a lot of stations were a muddled mess that were full of inconsistent formatting and appeared to be randomly generated each time you interacted with the station), but the biggest problem I had is the damage system -- it is trivially easy for even insanely OP creatures to get one-shot or permanently disabled by critical hits, regardless of the hit's actual strength. Get a bunch of archers and you'll delete a dragon, potentially without ever actually doing HP damage, and it can and *will* happen to your OP Keeper or minion, and that's nothing but pure aggravation. It basically makes melee Keepers entirely pointless and heavily incentivizes keeping your Keeper locked in the deepest, most defended part of your dungeon. Splat even mentioned the automatons, and they were how I figured this out about the game's systems -- I had an entire army of insanely durable adamantine automatons, but they were absolutely *butchered* by goblins 20+ levels down. I couldn't figure out why because the game said the goblins were way too weak to be doing so well, and then I controlled an automaton directly and realized that it was the archers inflicting critical effects on the automatons -- disabling their limbs and eventually just auto-killing them with headshots without ever damaging their HP. I straight up uninstalled the game after that. The same thing will happen to your Keeper no matter how much you thug them out. If you think that won't bother you, then the game is probably for you.
Well...i dunno. "War for the overworld" was quite fair remake of DK2. At some points it was even TOO MUCH of remake with literal copy-paste but i liked it. Do we really need 2D demake of Dungeon Keeper at this point?
Shrugg, wake me up when they fixed Necro infinito army cheeze(animal bones farming, no not rats), and invasion enemies spawning further and further around the stairs if there is no more space close to it..
The last time i played this, stairs down still always ended up in one spot and that spot happened to be surrounded by strong af golems that instakilled anything that went down... According to the patch notes, that should've been fixed so I should try again...
I had been out all day waiting to get home to watch it and finally clicked the notification to relax lol I assumed it was either the game creator had copyright issues or something of that ilk
@@GateCrasherAniv Definitely not that. I saw a reddit thread where the (solo) dev was advertising the game. He was super excited when I linked Splat's video to the thread.

Just have arrow point up or down on it simple and easiest to read at glance preferably with different colors so you can be zoom out and still know

If it wasn't permadeath I'd probably play it. I just have no interest in any game with permadeath.
from this video alone, it reminds me more of dwarf fortress than dungeon keeper...
Agree!
yeah the barracks, the bedrooms for the higher levels, the digging
Bought this game like a week ago and have been playing it nonstop. Strong Recommend!
You will love dwarf fortress

great.

Woooo! I'm so glad to see how far KeeperRL has come!
Your reviews are awesome you always introduce games I feel I would never find on my own. Thanks for your good work.
We must have played completely different versions of "Dungeon Keeper"...
I bought this right after it came out havent played it in least a year and hearing it came out as official game is great.
Game was never not fun
Suspicious looking initial base shape..

Support this company. They released a free zip'd copy of their working stable release during the lockdown and deserves recognition.
Have you never played War for the Overworld? It is a true spiritual successor to DK and DK2, even shares a name with the cancelled DK3's subtitle
Btw, he will be back tomorrow w something hot and fresh of the indie skillet.
Love this game! Thanks for showcasing it Splat, it needs more eyes on it!
I always turn off Keep invasions, but in exchange I always send the Keeper out on any expeditions. Makes attacking a dragon....exciting. And horses. Got one-shot by a horse once.
Splat: The horse kicked him to death.
Game: The horse's spirits are lifted.
🤣

Yep. Having played the original Dungeon Keeper games, War for the Overworld is what Mobile Dungeon Keeper 3 _should_ have been...
@@guuspot923 It's named after the cancelled DK3's subtitle. It'd better be inspired lol
@@kyleacampbell Oh, I agree. I was *so stoked* they got the OG narrator back, too!
1.0 is a great base for the game to be more than a basic "light DK + DF" . (i own KRL )
PS. The Knight hero is OP.
I am not getting Dungeon Keeper vibes from this, this is more akin to Dwarf Fortress Lite.
i've had this game for years, and i love it! the 1.0 release has been great, but i can't wait for more content to be added! there's still a lot that feels missing with the game.
Biggest reason I'm here is because of Splat's roguelike love.
sure, you feel loved at first, but those rogues will eventually leave you, alone and crying.
Just put this on my wishlist and subscribed. Nice work!
Well, I am 11 minutes into this video and I already want this game
Was not expecting a horse armor DLC joke. lol

It seems like this is an ongoing question, what is wrong with War for the Overworld? It seems like this was nailed years ago now.
Marl the feral child gave me a guffaw. Glad the horses spirits were lifted from biting off his leg and kicking his neck so it broke.
Dungeon Keeper 1 and 2 just released on Steam today funny enough, they're at a pretty good price too, yay!

Bought this after the last time he reviewed this. Really love it!
I think I'll wait until next month for adventure mode in dwarf fortress 😎
This looks great, thanks Splatt!
That looks nice... And by the looks of it, it should run on my microwave display as well
This video serves as a much better tutorial than the game's tutorial.

Advice from Splatt: "Human beings like light!"
as in, we are both waves and particles.
except for particle man.
but then, he's doing the things he can.

In the original game it was godmode evil where you could pick up your imps and smack them.
Heir? Dungeons series been around for that.
Love that you confess to loving permadeath. That's the way to learn in this type of game. Embrace the consequence!
One of best games I ever played
I bought this game on release and its been a blast. The peasants in good knight mode suck so I immediately look for dark elf slaves😅
The dwarven settlement should defo be a fortress and not a colony lol :p
"Oh, there are noble knights!"
*abuses peasants*
"Oh...they're Bretonnian knights"

I think that "War for the overworld" series is the unofficial sequels to the Dungeon Keeper games?
Played tons recently, lots of fun
