A deep dive into caveman death metal and how the death metal community has progressed
the hardcore guys that just retired from being emo retired from being hardcore and swear to death metal (and completely ruined it)
yep
Came here specifically to like this comment
lol In NYC death metal and hardcore have always had a link. Nobody has taken over anything. Death metal bands are just playing mixed bills more just like the good shows back in the day.
@MrFernadz thats when hardcore was good like sick of it all, agnostic front, cro mags, underdog, Leeway etc
@ what about the castle heights era ? All the mixing in that era ? Skinless/Sworn Enemy shows . Irate/Dehumanized shows. Plenty of local fests had death metal and hardcore bands together and even metal core bands in the late 90s early 2000s. I remember seeing The Black Dahlia Murder playing with metalcore bands because they “weren’t death metal”. Not sure why you think there’s a division among genre’s . People have always been mixing and going to different style of shows.
Caveman DM is still rockin at my house!
The love OG 80s/90s hardcore. The more I hear about current year HC taking over everything the more I wish had a better term to describe what I like.
Cool video.
But honestly I feel like its just one of many trends within the genre that will come and go. I hope that we see the trend of hardcore bands posing as death metal go away
“Hardcore bands disguised as slam bands” so fuckin true lmfao
imo has a lot to do with the modern beatdown scene. Instead of the old-school style which had a completely different aesthetic and less produced sound, they use similar logos and vocals to death metal bands.
Yeah, old-school beatdown HAD slammy riffs and moshy parts, but it was it's own thing, not a mish-mash. There are some great revival bands though, Volcano & Discontent for example.
2 things
1) Hardcore has overlapped with death metal since its inception- why y'all have a problem with it now I don't understand or care actually bc you seem to have a problem with just about anything death metal does that isn't tried and true. Hell forbid a band have more than 3 instruments and more than 1 subgenre attached to their name.
2) Slam and other genres of death metal have been oversaturated since their inception- social media just makes it a lot more apparent.
My stance exactly. Slam and Slam-Hardcore crossover and distinct and abundant things and it's so blatantly obvious, yet everyone acts like it's this new wave of imposter BDM. Got nothing better to do than police and protect the sanctity of fuckin caveman slam.
Hardcore mostly separated besides the New York scene from metal pretty early on
COVID allowed for the jazz session like style of NSE bands to overtake maggot stomp imo
Even if I dont completely like their sound, Undergang is still doing their thing. They've been a band doing their thing way before caveman riffs though, and I respect them for that.
Still crazy to me that Mortician blew up in the way they did a few years ago. I remember being into them like 20 years ago and I could have never forseen it being really popular with anyone outside the extreme metal underground. Really cool though, just goes to show there’s a time and place for everything, and there truly is an audience for anything. Great vid Jimmy.
mortician and fucking grausamkeit of all bands blowing up actually shocks me
Mortician would always be in the dollar bin at my local record store which was amoeba in San Francisco... Now an original copy goes for at least 30 bucks anywhere
when i first got into death metal like 20 years ago no one even respected them IN the death metal community, it was just that dumb band that has 3 minute movie clips in every song. now that tiktok kids think they are the coolest thing ever and their shows actually have a lot of people it's wild to me
A big part of it was the memes people made of them
Mortician used to just get laughed at because it sucks.
Maggot Stomp bands like 200 Stab Wounds had a great start, but man.. they kinda lost it. Another band that had it and lost it is Blood Incantation. If I wanted Atheist I’d just go for Piece of Time.
Bloody stoked for new Pissgrave though, they kept their word.
Blood incantation was always its own thing and evolving as they progressed absolute elsewhere is a masterpiece as for 200 they did kinda lose it new record felt like watered down version of what they were known for
@ I respect your take, but I liked B-Incantation for being a death metal band. Not prog rock / synths / some Death Metal. They’ve lost what I loved them for. I’ve seen them twice, and the greatest moment I had with that band was seeing the 18 minute track live,
The new album is dog water compared to that.
New pissgrave??!??! Theyre so br00tal cant wait
@ Pre-order that monster before it’s 80 bones like suicide euphoria!
I remember being so excited when bands like Sanguisugabogg came out because Death Metal came oversaturated with bands like Decrepit Birth and Spawn of Possession (bands I love now) and it got tiring. I still listen to new bands like Morteferium and Phrenelith but stuff like Sanguisugabogg, Tomb Mold and others became boring and I stopped paying attention to what was going on in the scene. Whenever a new band comes out that sounds like any of what you mentioned, I usually pass.
I'm just glad there are bands still though like mephitic corpse and morbific keeping that style going.
Mephitic corpse gave me the inspiration for this video
mephitic is so heavy live and the new album is fire
@@jimmyfromtheblock3714that full length rips head split records always pushing some good DM
what’s up Angel
Undergang started like a decade before the trend and will probably be supported years after the wave turned back....But sure they got some extra push during this time.
Oh yeah you had almost every band getting their "cult" points in by at least one member who wasn't dressed like a pro-wrestler in the promo photo rocking an Undergang shirt.
I agree, however, I do believe the “rise” of mortician and the rise of sanguisugabogg more specifically led to the hardcore bands disguised as death metal bands. All the bands we say today like corpsepile, 200sw, damnations domain, body box and “slam” bands trying to be in the hardcore scene is primarily because of sanguisugabogg. Everyone is trying to sound like them but more specifically core bands that want to be “death metal” are using them as a template. It’s almost like a new, complete diffrent approach to “deathcore” death metal made with primarily mosh parts that sound completely diffrent from, say, dying fetus, and of course actual deathcore bands like suicide silence for example.
They didn't die, it's just like wigger slam, they stopped for a while and came back full power after some years.
Great breakdown and analysis of that trend, I always thought the vipers and high tops looked a bit goofy and cheesy , the only record I picked up was the disembowelment LP , cerebral rot was good too
I think once we started seeing sanguisuggabogg and 200 stab wounds start having features on hardcore band albums is when it genuinely just died and the bands that were so called "caveman death " showed they're true colors and theyre hardcore background
True colors and hardcore background? lol people grow up with a variety of influences . Hardcore fans have been going to a variety of other styles of music for decades.
@ keyword is " background" you didn't see devourment , carnal decay , Cephalotripsy , epicardieectomy playing no bozo ass sanity slip/ life cycles shows or have a "feature" on a Jesus piece track , talking about "lol" poser ahh
@@MrFernadz pretty much this. its crazy how people still view genres as like this "pick your team" kinda thing and that you can't just like multiple things. on the other hand though I'm not gonna deny that there's at least some percentage of people that crossover from one genre into another in a 'tourist' kinda way as opposed to genuine interest
Hardcore is literally 1 step up from five finger death punch. Just like “tough chud” vibes
Great video. Can't wait for more!
Since you asked, it would be cool to expand on this topic historically, like each fad that came and went in the last 20 years, how long it lasted, what was it like, characteristic bands/albums, etc.
i sorta did that at the start with thrash revival from 2015-2017 and so on
Do I have to take meme culture seriously? Idk- I’m sure this dude know his audience I clicked bc I never heard anyone say “caveman.” But I love mortician LOL.
Hardcore kids have always been the "chameleons" and "bandwagoners" of the underground music world, they will jump or leech onto any underground music trend then revert back to hardcore once the trend dies off or they exploited the crap out of it lol
Hell yeah we’re getting a lot of uploads!
trying to do 1-3 a week
@ mmmmhhh, a real go getter!
Thanks cousin Jim
I feel like these trends don’t go anywhere, where are the masterpieces?
nowaadays its false slam and grind, every single 16 year old has antimusic logo in their bios
I'm almost 17 and I don't use that logo... Hmmm what does that mean...
@@ElGordoDeLasHistorietas it means you're gay hahaha got'em
i would just call the mincers, even though they dont actually listen to the OG (good) mincecore and grind like Bob Plant, Shooting Spree, Archagathus, Agathocles
Harry Potter talking to me about cavernous death metal or should that be deathcore? There’s bands that originated the cavernous DM style in the early 90's you mentioned incantation which is the start of the cavourous style but I’ve never considered mortician in that genre, just brutal death metal IMO but splitting hairs. Other bands such as demilich, from the early 90’s also originated that style. There’s always bands that will imitate other bands and a trend will become popular & saturated for a while, its happened with thrash about 20 years ago.
Sure. I think a lot of Hardcore people was searching for something heavier at some point, so they went for Death Metal, making the music and inviting Death Metal bands to Hardcore gigs. And as a result, "Caveman" Death Metal is less popular now. But Mortician should never die.
mortician has remained in the mainstream of death metal (IMO). Kids nowdays have metallica, korn and mortician on the same playlist.... i mean mortician is good start for them youngsters
very good analysis
Off topic, but you should really check out some active bands from the socal/LA gore/grind scene here. Sulfuric Cautery, Vulva Essers, Wormeater, Byakuyas Revenge, Casket Mush. Shit along the coast that isnt socal would be some Mephetic Corpse, Necropsy Odor (both are deathgrindy), Rawtopsy (AMAZING gravity blasting goregrind/slam), Fake Dust (one of the best grind bands EVER), Family Vacation, Disease, Bohemian, and Bummer.
mephetic corpse made me wanna make this video
@ Yesss new shit just came out. Im touring and playing in SLO with them w/ my band Homegrown.
great analysis Jimmy!
Fads can't die out if the label has a "no fads" guarantee. That's why NSE is untouchable
youre gonna start the bdm civil war between blasterbation nse and snare reverb slam bands
I just wanna pop in and say Frozen Soul blows and they are just a Bolt Thrower clone
Most boring shit ever. Listen to their interviews too, 0 personality or charisma just like their riffs.
Dropping a truth bomb here mate. Century Media are a label for sellouts too.
JDawg is the GOAT BRAH BRAH
I feel like this trend also if part of why BC Rich Ironbird guitar prices went absolutely insane. Like it seemed like every band was rocking Ironbirds with crackle or neon paint and Pit Vipers 😂 as a fan of those guitars it kinda sucks because even models that were originally barely above beginner guitars when they were new are now being put online for 4 figure prices. I hope they'll come back down as this music kinda dies off. I liked a handful of the bands that came out of this genre but you definitely hit the nail on the head with this video I feel.
pit viper stocks went down i bet haha
Because you’ve been mentioning it so much lately, you gotta do a video about new standard elite
Loved this and accurate, im glad its gone. Never understood pitvipers and tye dye shirts. Glad to have you back on the daily Jimmy
PunkBlockJimmy
Who up blocking their jimmy?
Honestly I wasn’t really listening to metal that much until 2019 when I found your page and found a SHIT ton of bdm and hidden gem OSDM bands. Caveman jokes got old quick, but it was still kind of a fun time
Man I haven't heard this term in a while lmao
Didnt know cavemen made death metal.
They do make war metal though - see Caveman Cult for an example lol
@dillon1058 I honestly have no idea what caveman death metal is lol. This video just appeared on my feed and the title stood out.
I really dug Encoffinized! I think they split in 2020 and one member went on to form Infested, which was nowhere near as good. You’re right, though, lockdown played a big part in killing the momentum of that style. Undergang and bands like Cryptworm are keeping it alive, but not many now. The underground has trends and phases just like anything else.
let's fucking go, if for the next vid you don't go bald I'll be disappointed
I thought that Mortician was on their way to becoming bigger than Cannibal Corpse. Which is surprising that Cannibal Corpse is the most popular, I assumed that Morbid Angel would have become the most popular Death Metal band.
Morbid Angel tied their own noose with stupid moves
@Hecatecrossways Cannibal deserves it and has workes extra hard to be at the top, they have taken almost not breaks from touring and recording, their work ethic is insane.
@seblo8462 I feel like they blew up because that one senator said their name and they were in that jim carrey movie
@jimmyfromtheblock3714 definitely being mentioned in the media can boost popularity, but maintaining their relevancy is from roadwork.
I know cool “cavernish” death metal band, but not typical for modern scene - Cryptic Dissolution, especially love their split with guys from Gravepeeler
Great video dude 👍🏾 👌🏾
What i dont like about the current scene is how clean polished most death metal bands are. So much overproduction, with the same plastic drum samples used, the same 5150 amps and all about mids instead of scooping them i think it makes all of them sound the same, even Devourment started using modern guitar amps and processed drum sounds on their new album.
Another thing is that every band tries to be too family friendly if you know what i mean...
Resi Mortician in da house
@ I dont understand what you mean but still gave you a like haha
Resident Evil Mortician.. haha like how you’re album was based off of Resident Evil and Mortician
@ Ah yeah, well most of my albums are based on Resident Evil, there is one doing tribute to Evil Dead as well to mix things a bit.
Weird because it's still alive and well.
its still around just like metalcore and thrash but its def not what it use to be like
@jimmyfromtheblock3714 I couldn't tell you about metalcore...can't stand it, but Thrash is definitely going strong. At least in the underground, which is where it counts.
The hardcore kid playing DM genre is the absolute worst. Rolled up jeans and new balances = this band is about to suck and be 90% 2000’s metal core breakdowns. Loving the uploads Jim Shiesty , you gotta get an interview w the dawg and discuss the SICK SHIT
I’ve tried so hard to like gatecreeper but every time I give them a listen I end up falling asleep
Chugga chugga oompa loompa caveman riffs brah brah!
this stuff like an assignment atp, the my gf complains why im so locked in
Kudos on the sick infected malignanty shirt
The band Penny Coffin is kind of an enigma to me what do you think of Conscripted Morality? the music is straight forward the vocals Warish but not really comparable to anything maybe other UK bands like Decomposed.
I’m thinking War Death might be a next wave.
I dunno if I’d say this style is “dead”, but it’s definitely over saturated. I do enjoy mortician but 99% of the bands that take after mortician are just boring and I don’t get it. I wanna see more people try to actually push the genre of extreme metal forward instead of just copying past bands. I wanna see actual creativity and artistry in the scene, not another mortician/devourment worship pseudo hardcore death metal band. Same with the thrash metal “scene”, I’m tired of megadeth wannabes I want new stuff
Every single metal sub genre is over saturated
@ I’d probably agree tbh. I still stand by my comment
its dead because out of the hundreds of bands, whos around? mortician, suggabogg, frozen soul, maybe like 2 more bands? and all above bands have distanced from calling themselves caveman as well
@@jimmyfromtheblock3714 yeah I can see that. To me caveman was never just about brutal death metal though, you can have caveman black metal, caveman thrash, caveman doom etc. it’s just this hardcore death metal that’s gotten boring. I think metals gonna be in a rut until we stop trying to do “worship”. Like I said we need creativity
Bro I think that’s just how it starts out. It’s possible to be original off the rip but most of the times dudes gotta jam together, live together , starve together etc.. for something real to emerge.
I refuse to be within 50 feet of a hardcore kid
Living or dead?
based pfp
I just saw Nunslaughter the other night and was looking at his agnostic front patch next to his hellhammer patch and was thinking about people like you
@Ho-oh37 agnostic front is not what i mean when i say hardcore, thats good hc, when i say hardcore i think of like beatdown bands and hoodie bands, converge and stuff
@@jimmyfromtheblock3714 You think of people and clothes, not the music. Ok thank you for clarifying.

Where’d you get the Scattered Remnants flag. Fucking Sick.
Scattered Remnants, think they sold out years ago
From a "almost professional" point of view, I will say that the "pop" came from the memes before the music. And we should know how that's not ideal. I've known a couple of this people in the last 4 years and boy, focusing on working rather than exploiting the trend wasn't even thinkable for them. I've even played with Incantation last year and overall was a bad experience. Hope something more solid will set the trend for the future
What bands changed or rebranded?
Sup Angels, what's yer favorite angle? Mine's an obtuse one, like your mom.
Reminds me of all the RazorBund (Razorback & Moribund Records) “horror metal” bands from the west coast in the early 2000s like Frightmare, Ghoul, Lord Gore (although they kicked ass unlike the new bands)
love Frightmare
most of that shit was mid outside lord gore and frightmare
EXCELLENT VIDEO
I feel like hardcore bands are out here catching strays. People really don’t understand the difference between a hardcore kid and metalcore guy who just thinks he’s hard
It got killed by death
that scattered remnants flag is gonna make me cream
also, on this topic, did you ever listen to Final Resting Place? Sorta like a hardcore reaction to Scattered Remnants & Traumaside type stuff imo. Saw em live and they covered Sacred Descender by Immortal Suffering 😤😤😤
yea they cool
That Fatal Realm demo rules though, so does the new Final Resting Place song but I just love how over the top heavy and ignorant it is,, like if I was 17 again I would be so stoked on those bands. But its good that these bands get kids into the basics of Death Metal and if they like it, awesome! Because its way sicker IMO if you like started with Youth Crew Hardcore, then went to a fest and saw lets say, Extinguished (on Daze Records).. but never heard like a proper blast beat before if thats how they get into Death Metal... cool... But I also heard that the whole Mortician Meme Page was made to specifically see if they could actually get , "Mortician" to at least play MDF... I don't think they knew it was going to blow up into the whole Post-Pin Maggot Stomp type stuff... but yeah man that meme page was wild considering though how many people it did help get into Death Metal. But I have a video back when Maggot Stomp just started doing tapes and stopped doing Pins. This ones from over 5 years ago: ruclips.net/video/37YyKWQ0E8E/видео.htmlsi=jm3BkxyttUM4oYLD But still the first ever Maggot Stomp tape was their best release, that Grave Ascension-Sin Never Dies/Demo 2015 Tape really needs a 12" reissue.. But I stand by that release being amazing there is no HxC influence: graveascension-maggotstomp.bandcamp.com/album/sin-never-dies
This is a good deep insight analysis of Caveman Death Metal Jimmy! 🤘🏼😎
Glasses on! Now it is serious business! 😉
Fact: deathcore is just emo...
Deathcore kids dont listen to death metal or hardcore, they just listen to screamo and shitty deathcore, then just copy it
@@dante5247That's metalcore kids, I know because me and my friend listen to deathcore and brutal death, and my girlfriend who listen metalcore is kinda emo
I never knew that bands like Whitechapel and Despised Icon were just American Football and Cap'n Jazz in disguise. Learn something new every day I guess!
Bro Plasma has been around since the late 90s, but it’s a gore band that later changed a bit
Mortician even earlier 1989
@ Mortician is the OG
Well… they either stopped writing and playing or just took a break
as soon as you take a break, it’s game over
@ lol
Nah, man, you are right, most slam bands are no different from most deathcore. The genre has become a pure bastardization of itself. I came into the subgenre wanting more shit like Repudilation, Dehumanized, and Internal Bleeding, but the only band I know that formed recently is Voracious Contempt.
check out My band Impure Conception - slamming scattered, IB, Ripping Corpse, Damonacy, Mortal Decay worship, and Final Resting Place - Dehumanized, IB worship

Listen to BrutalityInBuddha and see what u think.
it was big in the internet scene
@jimmyfromtheblock3714 yeah must have been, I come across a few "slam bands " like infectious jeliqueen or whatever and laugh at that, but I like to stick to my personal favorites, six feet under, Deicide, pooch carver, mentors, and more etc. check out my blend of music, it was deemed "trash metal" when I was interviewed in 'Der Spiegel' magazine last month (Europe's largest weekly magazine) I make some humor and death metal, Chris Barnes enjoys it. And he is the god, I'm a unwavering follower. He rocks!
They're all Goatamentise but bad. Or Jungle Rot but worse, which I didn't think was possible.
