thank you for being so detailed in your review. and going in depth on the differences between two competing offerings. Not everyone will go into like that but instead give a quick comparison. I have now been able to make up my mind on which to go with. Awesome stuff as always
Late comment, but I've been fiddling with this figure for the week since I got it, and noticed a couple things. 1. If your wing flaps don't rotate freely or line up well, check if they fit better swapped around. While they all look identical, there are separate left and right molds for each pair; you can tell by a small round mark on one corner. Mine fit best when all four have the pin mark facing up. I also noticed a similar issue with one of the folding wingtips, and had to detach it and flip the hinge around before it fit nicely. 2. The jet mode can actually mount all 8 missiles it comes with. The two tabs under the intakes in front can hold two of the larger missiles, while the other two can fit into some recessed slots directly under the wing mounts (you _might_ be able to squeeze them onto the rear tabs near the engines, but the tabs are angled oddly). The markings on the MA release look a bit better, but what sold me on the Zeta was that it actually has more accurate panel lines to the real jet, and I think the overall proportions just make a more attractive aircraft, especially in the tail section, which seems bigger. I'm making a couple of small mods to mine, to fix a couple of personal preferences. First thing, the stock pylons are actually upside down, so I drilled a hole and filed a new slot to tab them on the other direction. I'm currently debating whether to cut off the weird spikes on the wings, since Im' not sure they look good enough in bot mode to lave them on the jet.
@@michaelscholes8956 Not those, I'm referring to the beige missile pylon mounts that you can stick under the wings. They're shown in the video at about the 23 minute mark. By "stock" I just mean what was included in the box. The pylons work well enough, but I've built several F-4 models in the past, and while the pylons have a very weird shape overall, the thing I noticed the most was that they are essentially mounted upside-down when compared with the aircraft in real life. I removed those two finger-like tabs on mine, and drilled/filed out a slot there to let them mount under the wings on those same tabs. Hope that clears it up a bit!
@@sheetpostmodernist398 oh yes, that makes much more sense. Thanks for the clarification. It’s going to bother me now that I know they’re upside down haha
Great review Ben! Blitzwing looks awesome! One of the best Alt-modes I ever seen. Jet mode is so realistic! I may need to pick this particular movie series character up!
they have done a nice job I had pre-loaded it and it came to me on Friday and I transformed it into a phantom f 4 and it is very nice as a fighter in that it has all the weapons that it had in the movie
Those are actually drop tanks, not bombs. The horizontal stabilizer (tail fins) should be canted downward at like a 30 degree angle, while the wing tips should be canted slightly upward. Definitely the most accurate jet mode so far, although still a bit stubby. At least it looks like a F-4 Phantom II, unlike the Studio Series Blitzwing which is just ?????
The MA paint job is closer to the movie. Almost the entire nose is supposed to be black, rather than just the nose ogive. And the vertical stabilizer is supposed to have a white leading edge with one large frontal red triangle, and no red tip. Zeta changed it up quite a bit again, like with the livery wording on Coolsville/Jazzy.
@@texasbeast239 In the movie, Blitzwing's alt mode was a F4-C (at 24:54), the typical "shorter" length Phantom with the large bulbous black nose cone with IR sensor bulge underneath. Both Mechanical Alliance and Zeta Toys used the F-4E, the sleeker, "stretched" Phantom with the smaller black nosecone "tip" (smaller radar dish), with the 20mm Vulcan cannon bulge underneath. As such, Zeta Toys painted that area more realistically, while MA painted the whole area ahead of the cockpit to simulate the F-4C's appearance. MA's missiles are incorrect, and look like mini-Sparrows, while Zeta's are the correct Sidewinders.
Also, you can get water decal stickers. They are better than those tape decals. Just by the phantom model they are about $20.00. And you can use their USAF Flag decal on the wings.
Great review and comparison! I like the overall look of MA, but still feel like the engineering is a bit too advanced for their quality of parts and assembly. Zeta seems much more polished in terms of material quality and assembly to support what they have to offer.
It looks great in robot mode and in the jet mode I think the jet just looks a little squashed like we the nose are a little stubby plus the body could be longer. But for the robot mode the just looks good and if someone isn't a jet nerd they probably won't notice Also slight correction the things on the wings and center are "drop tanks" fuel tanks designed to be discarded when empty or in combat Also 1 thing it is missing is the 4 fuselage mounted missiles (on the real phantom aim-7 sparrows) both of these only have the wing mounted aim-9 missiles
My copy definitely came with 8 missiles (four Sidewinders, four Sparrows), but there have been a lot of missing part reports on this one as I understand. I prefer not to use the missile pylons, because they're actually molded upside down, but there are tabs and slots that will let you mount the Sparrows under the belly. Two tabs under the intakes will mount the forward ones, and you can mount the rear ones by inserting a fin into a slot in the underside of the wing panels. I'm definitely a jet nerd, so I can see the stubby shape, but I'm also just impressed that they managed to cram the bot completely into the jet so cleanly. The slightly cartoony look gives me a nostalgic feel for old GI Joe vehicles that were always slightly bloated to make room for figures.
@@sheetpostmodernist398 yes, if you know jets, then you can tell he is a bit stubby. The cockpit is too short and that sort of thing. However he is taller than thunder Warrior, whose jet mode is I think even worse in that regard. The tail stabilizers are much too small as well.
I finally got this figure yesterday and he is so amazing. Was pretty hard to do the legs cus I got stuck and couldnt figure out why the legs wouldnt connect with the top half of the jet. Also is it just mine but did the stand adjustments feel way too tight? I cant even use the stand because of it

I just got this figure and its been a transformation nightmare....i cannot for the life of me get it into vehicle and the wings fall off... After 3 hours i decided to leave it in robot and never transform it.
Spent 4 days trying to transform mine. Took 2.5 hours just to undo the shoulders the first time. Way too tight. Clearances way too small. Arm torn off twice because tiny screw pulls out of plastic under strain. And won't position correctly in alt mode so can't close bottom bay. Top half and bottom half have nearly 1cm gap so can't connect together. This one goes on my dud pile. A big miss.
How did you detach the shoulders? I've been trying to pry them off, with what I am sure is excessive force, but they refuse to detach. I'm trying not to break them off. The process looks so effortless in all the videos I've seen, not the case with mine - how did you finally manage to do it?
@@kennethlim4596 it is very difficult. Keep massaging them to try loosen them, while twisting upwards. They attach at the rear and front.
