This is the reason decoupage folks use Mod Podge. It is white glue (PVA) but has an additive that levels it off and forms a hard shell - no bumps! And, you brush it on the piece, add the paper and then put a coat directly over it. You do not have to wait for the first part to dry before the top coat. It is advisable to do thin coat and then you can add a second coat later. There are multiple types of Mod Podge. I prefer either a matte or a satin , rarely use the gloss, but they all work the same way. Great choice of paper! For a first shot, you did a terrific job!
I used to do a great deal of decoupage until my tremors got too bad. I used all different surfaces and never had a rough texture. When you place the serviette onto the coaster use a piece of rolled up cling film to dab the surface to even out the bumps. Another good technique is letting the glue dry. Lay the serviette onto the mould, cover with grease proof paper and use a dry iron to melt the glue into the serviette.
I absolutely love those coasters! The designs are really great and the gold is a perfect touch. Maybe you could do a top coat with heat resistant resin?
Nice job with the nail file but if you're feeling brave you can set light to a free corner and it'll quickly burn away leaving a perfect finish. Obvs don't be holding the coaster while you do that! Use your drying rack. Beautiful coasters x
Oh my word, game changer 🤩 I love learning from you and I've tried the decopage today. May have gone a little crazy but then I do have a few to gift out 😊
They are gorgeous Claire. I decoupage a lot, on wood, paper, glass, candles anything really and I find if you use a plastic sheet or even cling film to smooth out the "napkin" you get a smoother surface. Mod Podge is best for decoupage.
These are so cute! Really love the gold! So the best glue to use is decoupage glue and also Mod Podge works fine. The surface might be rough due to the wrinkles. Instead of using a roller, use cling film and gently smooth out the wrinkles with your fingers. 😊
Hi Claire, thank you so much for your very enthusiastic videos, I absolutely love watching them. I was once told to use cling fling(uk) to rub the air bubbles out of decoupage. It works a treat. Hugs from Wales ❤️
These are so sweet! I have decoupaged on many surfaces, and it's always been a rough textured finish. You can do more layers to seal and smooth if you like, but that's really normal. I like the texture myself. Yours really are adorable, and perfectly ready to use. Don't fret. Thanks so much for showing!!! Happy Creating!!!!
I have decoupaged for years the best way to separate the layers is to lick your finger and thumb tips and put either side the napkin press together then pull them apart that will separate the layer for you, if you need any help claire you are welcome to give me a shout. Also a white background is always best for showing the napkin. Also don’t use copyright napkins if you want to self your products. Xx
Claire, usually after the first coat of decoupage glue dries fully.. just lightly sand it before adding the 2nd coat. This will help smooth out the rough feeling you were talking about. I hope that helps you out. 😁
