the world remains "fascinated" by India he says. I think one reason the west criticizes India could be because they are still not able to digest the fact that India has not been balkanized in spite of this huge diversity.

I am very eagerly waiting for India's journalists to report the negative news about the European and western countries, only negative news is what news is all about after all. Lets bring the negative side of the west to the huge outward looking Indian population. Lets build a perspective of the west based on criticism lets do it! By the way I feel obliged that I do this every day and hence bringing the true value to the term news. Come on people let us all 1.3 billion Indian population highlight the negatives of the west because indeed we people have some expectations from the west.😉

If it’s about language then briefings can be in both languages
Hindi can be easily converted into English like it happens at global platform
And most countries give speeches and briefings in their own language so what’s wrong if Indians speak Hindi

And people like Jeferry Gettleman are well-known racist, as has been exposed on Twitter many times ...

The debate was good. The NYT guy made some interesting comments like relating the safety of journalists to rule of law etc. The comments of the Lady in the panel about safety issues of journalist who criticise the ruling dispensation were note worthy. The opinion made by srilankan fellow that hindi is a hindrance does not hold water. Hindi can be translated easily if the media person take initiative. And I also think that some of the media groups in the international news space are biased towards India (or may be the party in power today). But we can take steps to do whatever we can do from our side. The govt should really open up itself to the media outlets where ever possible (except national security) India's stance on rule based international order, climate change and Yoga have made news too which uplift India' image. Similar initiatives can be taken to reverse the present biases against India.

In this conversation I found that
    we need to have
    1. Easy access to information.
    2. If we know many languages then we should speak in which the listner is comfortable.
    3. Yes! Journalists ( even our own External Affairs Minister is not safe on Twitter ) are not safe as they are in USA, ( see Stephen Colbert criticising Trump ) we need to value journalists and protect them by making Rule of Law more strong.
    3. We need to have a thick skin if someone criticizes us we need to find positive things in that and improve.
    4. There are lot of positive things about India but many things need to be improved and it is time that we correct ourselves.
Any additional thing can be added below

I don't think hiring a hindi translater is much of a deal for NYT, its the least they can do for a large country like india. I think its hilarious.
Also, there is something called leverage of one's power and money to influence the wider audience to further one's motives. Critisism should have the same effect/influence on both sides.
Even if india/developing countries start criticizing the US on gun laws, black rights, foreign policies, ecological irresponsibility, i doubt it would effect the west in any way.
The perception that is built by reports generally lack the backing of good amount of data. They use a small sample size of influencial people(or local biased media) who have no clue about the realities at ground zero.
This perception then hurts India economically (tourism, businesses, foreign investments).
Also there is a lot of false news about india, which the journalists should be accountable for, but they don't care coz that's their ultimate motive. How is that fair (with power comes great responsibilities).

Show started on India's ranking on various platforms (press, women safety and so on... ) and everyone was discussing the how foreign reporters are feeling in India and language barrier...first time I found show was not to the point analysis!
Missing important points - why only India's negative side shown in foreign media, why not China, Singapore and other countries? --why foreign media focusing on the reports on which no one believes? (Most of the reports are published by Americans and British agencies... they are lacking the ground reality, using developed countries criteria for developing countries like India!)
-- why foreign media covers more news on religious intolerance and concerning about the safety of minority and women in India?
( other countries much more intolerant than India... and woman safety issue is not only related to India its a global issue then why India....)
-- Reports on Refugees --When India said It would deport rohingya... it was completely pictured in negative way without showing the facts... and what about the European countries and USA's stand on Refugees?

King of Knights its true! Rohingya themselves created problem... now entangled in it! But it is the half picture... we cannot blame all Rohingya community ( I mean look at the faces of small kids do they look like armed rebels to any neighbouring nations to Myanmar or to Myanmar itself?)
when India took decsion on deportation of Rohingya it was in complete dilemma between humanity and threat to the nation's security... which foreign media misinterpreted as inhuman stance of India. Later on India helped Rohingya's in Bangladesh under 'Opration Insaniyat' as usual foreign media never showed this.

Jefrey pointed out a strong point that there should be fair access to information then and only then data will be published on the internet and around the world. And Indian media should be more focused on the issues that matters rather than TRPs.
After all there's always been bad and good sides.

Taking things into perspective - India is world's largest democracy of 1.3 billion people. Today it is transitioning into a developed country. With that said, as a journalist, should I focus on a grand scheme of things or should I focus on an outlier that happened in some corner of the country and provide a selective and a subjective picture about a complex religious and multiple linguistic India? When you do compare, do an apples to apples comparision, please.

It's all about stereotype viewpoint towards India. India is a diverse country where north to south, east to west has immense difference. But we live together. Every country has their own positive negetive things as like India. 1.If women are insecure in India then it's not only in india ,it's all over the world. Carole is also safe here.
2.Coming to hindi language.its our own language. We can't abolish it for foreign media rather we are providing subtitles to understand it in a better way.

A very valid that being an external affairs minister you insist on speaking in hindi even though you know English... It is good domestically but not a clever diplomatic stance... PM too should grant more interviews than speaking unilaterally if India is to benefit at global level.. Diplomacy is an art of subtleness

Visiting comment section was hard. I'm afraid we have failed to understand the Big picture here.
Why u guys only took one point "Hindi". Okay, so do one thing search for states which have only one official language and it's "Hindi" , is there more than 3 states? No! Now search states where English is one of the official languages. What did you find? Most of the states!!
Even all top tier exams in our country happened in English. So why praising hindi when it's dying from our society and system.
I agree that western media is pretty biased portraying India but India govt should take actions like China did. Ban any foreign media to reach out poor parts of the country. And why our PM doesn't give any open interview, why is he so afraid and we as people have some duties too.
Facebook is full of stories with shit about India and we are the one who creating these. We gave them opportunities to talk negative about us.
First, learn to respect yourself then expect respect from others.
    Jai hind.

I would call it a very futile discussion because the panelists here were clearly afraid to say anything fearlessly except the Indian journalist..What I understood from what Venkat sir said is that Indian government doesn't care that much about what foreign media/ foreigners are thinking about India which is okay for me if situation in India improves than what it is now..but as usual Frank did a good job..He just asked the question that needed to be asked and tried to take out the truth from the foreign journalists mouths..

  • @suryaunknown

Undoubtedly anchor Frank is very well experienced journalist as he know only when to be frank that's the beauty and maturity of Indian Media on other contrast foreign journalist seems good maturity by simply admitting that they don't know loud and clear maybe it's most probably we ever expect from any Indian counterparts whether whatever be the matters of discussion going on they must have to say something and they will so it doesn't matter whether they have adequate knowledge or not....

I consider Mr. Jeffery gettleman 's comments in a positive way, since he seems "sensible " in his perspective. if speaking in our official language is your problem, then no indian media asked POTUS to brief us in hindi..
and finally we should reconsider the relevance of IB ministry and related press nd media governing legislations which are not in consonance to handle "nation wants to know stereotypes "

Some of the points raised by the guests are partly true like lack of access to ministers and government spokespersons. But Mr. Venkat Narayan and Jeffrey must be aware of something like pib, which releases all government communications in English also. Though I&B minister meets press occasionally, It's time to have regular or even daily press briefings by "PMO Communications Secy" on the lines of Whitehouse Communications director. The government should put it's perspective and show what it is doing, not just to foreign media but media in general.
