Like you’re somehow connecting with history. I’m looking for a rifle and i REALLY like this one! I think by Christmas I’ll have one along with it’s accoutrements.
I've got a very similar (not Pedersoli, but also italian made) percussion rifle chambered in .445. It's allowed to shot muzzle loaders on our 50m pistol range and I'm surprised how precise even simple round lead balls can be on that distance. Love the soft recoil and the sound of black powder rifles, they make boom, not pang.
Haloo! I've been shooting sabot loads in my sidelocks for years. When matching the bullet to the rifling rate, the combo works very well. My reason is accuracy. When taking an animal's life, all it has after all, it rises to a moral obligation to do so as quickly as possible. I do agree with you, that true hunting is within the range of the animal's senses.
Modern muzzleloades use a removable breech plug to make it easier to clean. Firing the sabot leaves plastic, how difficult is it to clean a closed breech muzzleloader using sabots? I have a Thompson Center in 1:48 twist, have not used sabots. Have you tried with that twist rate?
I hunt with a Thompson Center Encore muzzle loader in 45 caliber. I use a PowerBelt, 175gr bullet. It may not be “traditional “ but what a hunting rifle. The PowerBelt bullets don’t use a conventional sabot design. They are phenomenal and are available in a lot of calibers with 50 caliber being the most popular in the US. If you get a chance try them you will be amazed.
I’m eager to try out some sabots in my White Mountain Carbine. I’ve learned that it doesn’t do very well with round ball if you don’t get the patch just right.
Great video!! Question...isn't 100 grains a little much for a .50 cal?? I normally shoot 55-70 grains from my Pedersoli Pennsylvania .50 cal. flintlock with very good results. Max suggested load for this rifle is 110 grains.
I have a Thompson Centers Hawken rifle which is very similar to that also in .50 Cal. I have just recently purchased a lee 320 gr R.E.A.L. (Rifling Engraved At Loading) Bullet mold. I have cast a number of them and have some ready to shoot but have not had a chance to shoot them. They are supposed to clean the barrel when you fire. I did run one down the barrel and use a ball screw to remove it and it did scrap some carbon fouling out which is impressive seeing as I clean it very well after shooting. I hope to shoot them soon. I have in the past used the same plastic sabots you are using but with 375 gr boat tail rounds. If you shoot it to many times with out lubricant the plastic will build up and you have to clean the barrel. Great video and Happy hunting!!!
I am in New Hampshire USA and I built my AK47 from a bucket of parts and got a 2 inch group with it. Polish folder. Love the dependability of the beast. The cartridge is about the same power as our 125 year old 30/30 and that is good for about everything over here.
Great videos! Any chance that you can do an evaluation on the Pedersoli Rocky Mountain Hawken with patched round ball? I am really interested in that rifle and there are no RUclips videos about it.
I cast up round ball and Maxie bullets for my .50 Cal cap 1/42 twist it is right in the middle for twist 60gr for the round ball 90gr for a Maxie both shoot well and have dropped deer out to 100

Black-powder hunting is the best !!! I do Archery with a Recurve Bow but Black-powder is so much better :) I used a Thompson Center Renegade in .50 Cal. with Maxi-Ball 370 Grain flat nose bullets that I make myself and used Bore Butter when loading for hunting. I only used 75 grains of black-powder due to how soft the lead was that I used... If a bullet I made was dropped from shoulder height on a hard surface it would deform to much to be used in the rifle !!! Making this the best Deer slammer ever :))) Good luck Hunting :D
I envy your ability to shoot so many beautiful weapons. I thought your country was very strict on gun control as all of Europe. i think this is awsome you do this i was a hunter using regular firearms, and after watching your vids i understand there is more work to shooting a muzzel loader but more sporting and much more skill is required, im buying one myself, if i may ask what is your opinion of the traditions model of the hawken.

I enjoyed this video very much! I have a .50 caliber Missouri River Hawken and love it. I also have a .50 caliber Pedersoli Traditional Percussion Hawken and love it as well. I enjoyed your video on that one also. My question: can I shoot saboted bullets from my Pedersoli Traditional Hawken like I do from my Missouri River? I shoot .50 caliber Harvester Crush Rib sabots with .44 or .45 caliber Hornady pistol bullets or Scorpion Gold bullets. Is that ok in my Missouri River? If so, can I shoot the same configuration in the Pedersoli Traditional Hawken? I realize the twist in the traditional Hawken is not ideal for saboted bullets but I'd like to try if it's safe for the rifle and for me! Thank you for your videos and advice!
+Apis Mellifera The traditional hawken was a slow twist for patched round ball. Conicals need a fast twist to stabilize. But, that being said, every gun is different,shooting is the best test!! Yes it will be safe as long as you load it properly !!

Hawkens usually come in 1 turn in 48 twist allowing either patched round ball or conical. Patched round ball is good for hunting to 90 yards,.....like 65 gr FFF They are accurate much farther its just that you wouldn't want to wound an animal. And yes I can shoot bullets but most shots are less than 50 yards. Your gun looks fabulous and of very high quality. I can remember when Americans could make gun's well. I find at 50 yards with black powder most muzzleloaders can 1 hole and at 100 can clover leaf,.....but you must use an optimum load not a maximum load. And always shoot paper to know how good your powder is. Yes they can shoot far but I limit my self to 120 yards with a bullet,.....because I am confident of my vision at that range. I can use a muzzleloader to hunt or I can use a center-fire rifle to hunt (straight wall cartridges 444 Marlin,...45/70,....44 magnum,... 357 magnum) But I use a 12ga because it works well,.......but hunting is not a sure thing,.......so muzzleloader season is a second chance. Your gun is beautiful and looks like excellent quality. Thompson Centers were prettier,..... but yours has better sights and yours looks authentic.

yes, 50 cal with a powder charge of 70g or more has some recoil. It kicks like 12 ga shotgun (disregarding automatic gas operated shotguns). that rifle weights a bit more than 9 lbs or 4 kg, not too light either.

Maybe the modern copy is designed for conical bullets but in 1842 when the originals were made they were designed to shoot a patched round ball, for conical bullets were not in use !!!!
That is fine for range shooting or competition shooting but for hunting guns you load and shoot from a cold clean bore. 1st shot is the most important in hunting. Not many hunters start with a fouling shot before hitting the woods for a days hunt. Same goes for modern hunting rifles. Sight it in for first shot clean cold bore.
Cap and Ball what type of sabot cup is that? I cast .456cal /220 grain conicals for my 1858 Uberti Remington reproduction. They are to hard to load in my gun so I bought a .450 cal / 200 grain mold. I thought with a sabot cup I could use the .456's I already made in my sidelock rifles. What do you think?
The blade sight on the front looks backwards. Is that the way it is supposed to be ? I see them the other way most of the time. I wonder what way is correct.
Does the lock contains a leaf-spring or a coil-spring? If the latter is present, then my Hawken might be the same as this one (I bought it second hand, so I have no clue about it's origins)... I also noticed that the bullets come down lower than I aimed for, altough I use the traditional patch & ball.
Ah yes indeed.. I just checked the papers, and it is indeed the case.. I only wonder, if the barrel is from the same factory (ie. if it is developed for hunters, the plastic and slug, instead of sporting since the coilspring lock is not allowed in competitions).
Lyman guns makes Hawkens in both 50 and 54 calibur in slow twist for round ball 1 in 60" and fast twist for Sabot rounds 1 in28" Most Thompson Centers have a 1 in 48" twist designed for they maxi-hunter bullet design the Maxi-hunter bullet weighs in at about 450 grains as compared to about 185 grains for a lead round ball bullet I beleave the T/C's are made by Invest arms At Montain Man reactments only patched round balls are allowed I got a 1 in 60 twist Green Montain replacement barrel for My T/C with 1 in 48" and it shoot much tighter groups with RB's Twist rates for Black Powered Rifles vary a lot depending on what style of bullet You need to shoot

that is pretty good shooting, and the fast barrel twist is really meant for the modern plastic skirted slugs.

Well, I bought the Rocky Mountain maple .54 version. It is very nice.

What about a percussion sharp carbine? Do the sabot work well with it? Since it about same caliber. And the sharp is faster to reload.

Thanks for asking that I was wondering as well. I always heard triple fine for 45 and under and double F for 50 and up.
I shoot fff in my fifty, but back the charge of by 5-10 grains. Works well.

The only problem is you didn't prime your bore you should have fired a primer first a lot more accurate at least that's how I was taught

Those guns look pretty nice, but they're waaaayyyy too close in price to a semi-custom.

The spring is a traditional leaf spring. If yours has a coil spring, i think it was made by Investarms, not Pedersoli.

+YaoiMastah the sabot is just a plastic patch, i don't think the barrel design has anything to do with the patch !!

Most Thompson Centers have a 1 in 48" twist designed for they maxi-hunter bullet design the Maxi-hunter bullet weighs in at about 450 grains as compared to about 185 grains for a lead round ball bullet
I beleave the T/C's are made by Invest arms
At Montain Man reactments only patched round balls are allowed I got a 1 in 60 twist Green Montain replacement barrel for My T/C with 1 in 48" and it shoot much tighter groups with RB's
Twist rates for Black Powered Rifles vary a lot depending on what style of bullet You need to shoot
Walt, the Lyman Hawkens are actually made by Investarms in Italy. But they are fine guns afterall.
