I also have a Brickstation P520 with the big W-2135 and a GTX 1070, mostly browse the web with it but it's a great gaming machine and can render the occasional video. Bought it in 2023 for $180 and the card was only $100, PC came with the Xeon, 32GB of RAM, and the 900w PSU. Upgraded to a WD Black SN850X that currently runs Pop OS, wicked fast, and I recently put in an Asus PCI-e WiFi card. I probably spent about $425 on the whole system not including peripherals.
Just ordered one on ebay. Going to have the -W2135 variant. Comes with 32Gb of ram but upping it to 128gb ECC. Its replacing a system I already have that servers as my sound library nas that runs on 3 NVME drives currently and at max. Old system is also on x99 with a 14 core Xeon from 2014 in there. While the CPU might be a slight downgrade in overall cores, the one in the P520 is more current (2017), and this platform supports bifurcation which from what I see, x99 does not. So now I can use the many PCI Gen 3 x16 slots to load up 4 NVME drives on each over time for a nice quick NVME Nas. Ill be transfering my SFP+ card over as I have 10G networking already too. Also, all running on Proxmox with a Windows VM. While im mostly using it as a Sound Library Server, its honestly not impossible to load up more alternative purpose VMs as well, not to mention use some of the storage as SMB fileshare. Either way, excited. Been a long time planning and finally able to upgrade this system. Just as well as I think the old one's motherboard is suspect (possibly component starting to go).
The PCIe lane accessibility is why I also set one up as a NAS in my home. Right now I just have four HDD's set up in RAID (12TB) but I would like to try a transition to NVMe. This is possibly the next step for a three tier backup solution. Workstation PC>Dual NAS RAID(s). It will evolve as time goes on. Good luck with yours!
I'm running a w-2145 which is the 8 core version. Using an RX-6800 GPU. It games extremely well up to 4k for most games. My GPU rarely gets out of the 40s and the CPU gets into the mid to upper 70s. Maybe once in a while it will hit 80 if my room is hot. Pretty good overall.
That's great, I would have liked to try that CPU out, but they were over budget from what I wanted to spend on upgrades for reselling. Good to know about your setup.
@@Gh0styGames I don't remember exactly but when I have looked it is always under 50% and the fans aren't really moving much. I game at 1080p lately because I have it hooked to my 55 inch HDTV. The RAM is DDR4 but it's quad channel which kinda makes up for it a little. You're probably leaving some FPS on the table at 1080p with this but it's plenty for me.

Sick. I currently use a P520 as a NAS/basement RUclips player for working out. I took out the optical drive to squeeze in two more hard drives. Just kind of hanging out until I figure out a new way to mount.
I bet that would help with continued use over time. I would judge it may not show up as an immediate temp drop, but for long sessions I think it would have a positive effect.
I just discovered your channel recently and have been watching your videos as I also love upgrading older hardware. The uplift with this cpu was very nice indeed but would you use the cpu for encoding when the nvenc on the gpu is better? I totally get that you were testing the cpu upgrade for this but I just wondered. Great video and you have a new subscriber 😉
Good point, I am pretty novice when it comes to using something like Handbrake. Before I got a PCIe capture card, I would use it for editing gameplay recorded with the xbox app within Windows. I could have prefaced this in the video.
@@HaisteComputerRepair if you go into the video tab in handbrake there is a dropdown menu where you can change the encoder. You can change it to nvenc there and it will rip through the file very quickly. You can also use it in davinci resolve.
@@jinty83 I had no idea, thank you. I could have done tests between the Quadro P4000 and RTX 2080. This PC has sold, but hopefully I will get another soon. Either way, I will look into this and add it to my tests. I am mainly a repair/systems builder, so a lot to learn about software.
@@HaisteComputerRepair glad I could help. It was still great to see the uplift in performance with the new cpu. Those extra cores made a big difference for the cost.
I looked for an upgrade mine once, you need a low profile cooler because the space between the CPU and the handle on the removable panel is about 112 mm if I measured correctly. A Thermalright Silver Soul 110 is what I was going to put in, but I figured that if Lenovo thinks the cooler they provided is good enough then I shouldn't be needing one.
@@aku2dimensional I just use my P520 for a NAS and watching RUclips while I work out (not the same one in this video), so the provided cooler is more than enough. All my gaming tests otherwise, it seemed fine for the CPU I installed.
@@HaisteComputerRepair I thought the same thing and decided to not get one until I need such a cooler. My CPU temps are fine while gaming and when I watch Thinkstation P520 videos on RUclips. Lenovo doesn't use cheap hardware on these kinds of machines.
@@elkomnda_mero I think that will come down to what your purpose is for owning one. They can be similar. I would personally be more interested in the P520.
