They weren’t combat birds at that point. It was their job to get the others to the IP and meet up with the other bomb groups, Once that was done they turned and headed back home. It also doubled as the units hack aircraft, collecting important items like scotch, whisky and on one occasion the CO’s wife to be.
It must have been pretty rough. I'm watching that new series, "Masters of the Air" and wow... I read most of the books on this topic but this show puts a visual aspect to it that makes your head swim. And I bet this doesn't even match up to the intensity of the real events
