    He would care less about the cause of the behavior - and that is the very object of the science of behaviour - discovering causes. Focus on the causes. Note at the end Beckman says she needs more walks? Oh no, she needs alot more than that.

    For trainers and dog owners that believe I'm blowing smoke up your arse? Join my little facebook group - and feel free to read the postings from dog owners that helped their dog overcome aggression and reactivity - ON THEIR OWN. No "dog trainer" required. They stepped out of the cash cow called dog training - stepped out of all the noise.
    How do they accomplish it so quickly? They now understand the very "object of the science of behaviour" - that trainers have thrown in the garbage. I dare you to open your mind to something old. Open your mind to the reality of what "dog training" is doing to you.

      Away from the trainer yes, the owner needs education. I can't blame the owners for all this BS - the dog can only meet their own needs with the resources they have available.
      Owners can only meet the dogs needs with the resources they have. Well guess what, most trainers don't offer any advice on resources - they provide fear. The application of negative reinforcement - punishment. Scare the owner - then it's "hire a trainer cause you can't possibly fix the dog on your own".

      It's fine and well to say the dog should get more exercise. But the standard day is 24 hours long and a year has 365 of them.
      Even if the dog is well taken care of 99% of the time, there's going to be times where the dog needs to understand that it's not the only creature in society. Just because external forces conspire to have it miss one exercise session in six months doesn't mean the dog is allowed to go ape-shit with the zoomies and run into people and tear stuff up and poke at other dogs until they lose *their* cool.
      It needs to understand that unacceptable is unacceptable--otherwise there's a good chance that something unrepairable is eventually going to happen.

    Personally as a trainer i think you're wrong, exercise is undeniably good for dogs, but the entire point of this is to both socialize and teach/train the dog what is appropriate and what isn't. You want the the dog to be able to interact with other dogs in an appropriate manner which at the moment it cannot do, even though she isn't aggressive (yet, she may or may not become aggressive in the future depending on future interactions with other dogs), her behavior and physicality wont be tolerated by most dogs at a dog park and will most likely land up in some sort of fight or altercation, even if she doesn't mean to fight. Ive seen many dogs even really athletic breeds become really non responsive to reinforcements or commands after heavy exercise when they become tired, so yes while the dog might be calmer and not necessarily displaying the same behaviors it isn't necessarily learning anything in that state, that's why you want to engage the brain in an alert state and change the behavior then so the dog learns the difference. I would also suggest to you that as a trainer you be aware that this was definitely a much longer session than we are seeing, and to be careful about criticizing so heavily when you weren't there, you haven't met the dog and have no idea about the background.

      If I were working with this dog, dog park is the result. But what is the result for this dog? What is the outcome? I suspect control and management - of the symptoms.

    • @Zao2050
      @Zao2050 7 месяцев назад +2

      @FunkyFuMan You are not reading the dog. This pit clearly has excess energy which has never been burned off properly. It is in a permanent hyper state, which can lead to aggression out of simple playfulness and the tenaciousness that this breed has. The suggestion here is not to tire out the dog completely so that you have almost no resistance, it is about getting the frustration out of the dog and giving him a chance to slow down and smell the roses! I have seen a lot of changes after just ten minutes of having such a dog run next to a good handler on a bike or rollerblades. Again, not to tire them out, but to get rid of the excess energy that has been building in his life. This dog obviously has not enough exercise in his life, nor any rules, boundaries, or limitations. It’s better for the dog to learn it in the right state of mind!

  • @Lauren_K
    @Lauren_K 9 месяцев назад +3

    You say "she's not thinking straight". That's why Beckman strongly corrects her. She can play and have the exercise (which she is getting in this video) but she needs to still follow the rules of the boss. If the boss says don't jump at a dog like this, that dog at that age is ok with being strongly corrected.
    You keep saying "exercise". I have a high-energy dog and she knows there is a time to get that energy out and there is a time to be self-controlled. My dog has to be patient and behave until we get to the park or to an area where she can be free.
    Thought this was common sense.

    • @roberthynesdogtraining
      @roberthynesdogtraining  9 месяцев назад +1

      Dogs have mental health too, most people don't realize that. When people have a stressful day, you have to do something to get rid of it. What does the dog get? The "pits" that I meet need to blow out the lines mentally. A run is physical exercise. The purpose for the run, that's the mental that the dog isn't getting. If a pit can't blow out the lines on something, eventually they will blow.
      It's targetted mental exercise that tends to be missing - dogs get stimulation instead. We have normalised excitement when we really want calm. The purpose for their existence - they love to run and chase. This is why I push tools like flirt poles, RC vehicles to chase, treadmills etc for any breed that was bred to run and chase. Redirect that energy to something useful, not something exciting.
      Do that, and Beckmans video wouldn't need to exist.

    • @grt49er
      @grt49er 7 месяцев назад

      It’s more of lowering the distractions so that you don’t have to control the dog so much. Think of energy as another distraction. Lower it in the beginning to give the dog a chance to learn. Overtime the dog will mature and that will intersect the amount of distraction that will trigger. Beckman may have trained this dog later, but here is just showmanship. I think he actually says that in his own way.

    Great analysis of the video. I agree with everything you mentioned. I get so frustrated watching these kinds of videos as well because I am a dog trainer but average people watch this kind of video and think that this trainer is the greatest thing in the world. This dog owner is simply a gentle giant guy who needs tons of help which is not going to get it in the few hours that he spent with Beckman. He's got a nice dog and he needs to keep it that way but I am afraid by following Beckman's suggestions, he is going to ruin the dog. By the way, that is how pit bulls play and interact with dogs and the people need to be aware of that before getting a pit.

    Now im at minute 12:36 and now there is more thing i agree with you. But We have to keep in mind some other things. What do You mean by saying exercising a dog? You also said that she is playful and he should just let her be a dog and take a leash off but at the same time you say that is unfair to Prince that he need to deal with it. So here is a thing, when dog is at that level of energy it means that he had not enough exercise for extended period of time, but the thing is that for all dogs extended period of time means something different. For some of them it is an hour and for others a week of low activity. So it is important to keep in mind that many dogs have a lot of energy every day.
    Another thing is that dog can rise his energy to extreme only when he sees a trigger like for example other dog. It means that You need a dog like Prince who can take a lot from rude puppy but at the same time you are the one who establish some rules to a play and interactions. So grabbing a dog in this scenario 12:36 is stopping a play for few moments to lower a level of energy.
    Does it works? I don't know i don't use that method but from experience i have i can assume that it works at least to some degree and even if it is not the best solution then i can say i does no harm to a dog and it is a small step forward not backward. Nothing to complain about.

    • @dawidjlb2589
      @dawidjlb2589 10 месяцев назад +1

      SO now 13:57, i removed a part of my previous comment but i thing now i have to bring it back. I understand a concept of fulfilling a desire. 100%. If she wants to chase they it is god to let a dog to do that. The problem is the way she does it. First she needs to learn how she can do something , where are boundaries and limitations.
      And now the part of a comment:
      There are a dogs who enjoy a fight. As simply as it sounds.
      They are not doing it because of fear, insecurity, dominance, lack of socialization etc... they are doing it simply because it is fun to fight. Same as some humans like to fight.
      How do You want to fulfill that desire? Remember, a playing with a toy is nothing like fighting other dog.
      Impulse control is something what allows you to stay doing what you are doing even if environment tries to change you behavior. For the case for video it means that when you see a dog and you want to chase it, you don't do it.
      I have to agree with you that this dog should burn some energy first tho. I think here is the problem, when client comes for a session you have only max few hours but to really get some dogs calm you need to spend few days with them. So here is difficult part of training where you have to work with a dog in really limited amount of time.

I wish we could develop this kind of awareness so that sog trainers can continue with their trade - forming or teaching a (relatively) balanced dog - and having he trade of helping a dog that is in any kind of distress by someone who can read a dog and will not be scared and show the dog. Plus, I do think there should be some sort of “driver’s license” for dogs, like a basic training that will teach basic dog’s behaviors and the most obvious ways a person can disrespect a dog without knowing, especially for people that adopt from shelters. You are right. Nothing good comes from a suppressed dog.

      No, exactly. That's why one has to keep punishing - cause the root cause is never addressed. Let this dog blow out the lines - and this Beckmans video wouldn't need exist. It's all bravado - and not fair to Prince. I take Monty with me, he wouldn't tolerate that puppy energy - and I wouldn't expect him to. I respect Monty more than that. It drives me insane to see what Prince is being made to tolerate, it's simply not fair to the dog. Prince is just part of the show.
      It's cause and effect - the behaviour is the effect. You can suppress it all you want - but it's going to find different ways to come out. But, people are told to keep on punishing. Always ask the question - why is the dog acting like this.

    How do you go about stopping a dog going ballistic/barking at guests coming over? Mostly territorial I think.

    • @roberthynesdogtraining
      @roberthynesdogtraining  9 месяцев назад +3

      You're asking the wrong question - you don't "stop" or "shut down" behaviours. You need to understand why the dog is acting out in the first place. If you don't understand the why, there is no fix.

    It is not about getting the dog 'tired' (physically or mentally) - it is let the dog use their energy so they don't have built up energy to be stupid... they need the chance to run and frolic and then they become more chilled...
    Many trainers aim to exercise a dog to the point they are tired however if the brain is tired then it is harder for them to think.... It is about removing the zoom and then let the dog learn how to chill out with other dogs...

      It's the number one issue for pit bulls. Bad mental health. Once they blow out the lines, different dog.

      I'll go you one better. There is no problem with this dog. Meet Little Bear, PTSD, and no balanced trainer would dare come out to meet her. Several recommended euth without even meeting her.

    around 6:00 she was fine with doberman but a level of her excitement can trigger some dogs to tell her to fuck off and in many cases that could trigger even submissive dog to fight. That can happen especially to insecure and undersocialized dog. She need to learn to meet other dogs respectfully and calm, then if energy of both dogs match she can rise her energy and be crazy playful. You as a human may care about staying as positive as possible but dogs don't care, if they don;t like something they keep things simple and rarely positive.
    Im going to wacht this video to the end but at the very beggining i can say that your intension is to bash that trainer for as many things he do or say. For now he didn't even started to work with a dog its early evaluation but you disagree with anything what is shown. And to make everything straight, I do watch Beckmans but i do not agree with everything he does.
    PS: In a matter of fact there was a period in pitbull's history that they were breed to fight other dogs. Obviously it was a specific line of pitbulls but even if that is not the one of them then we have also a line of amercian pitbulls and they offen have problem with triggered uncontroled agression. I don't remember how is it called but it is some issue in their brains.
    I have worked with many of pitbull type of dogs and i know that they can be sweetest things on the planet but i also know that once they start to fight it is not easy to stop them.

      I'm stating right now - i'm coming after dog training. Its garbage, it's bullshit, it's lies. Always has been.
      It's filling up shelters, it's killing dogs in droves and the worst? Dog training has thrown mans best friend in the garbage. Watch the video link I posted.

      The flirt pole is THE number one tool that saves pitbull lives. If a pit can't blow out the lines, they will blow and there is your aggressive dog.

    My view of Beckman's channel is that he is, whether knowingly or unknowningly, marketing to people who get pleasure from watching dog fighting. The video thumbnails are all I need to see: they are constantly pictures of Prince attacking or being attacked by another dog. His chanting about a "fight" in the start of this video disturbed me the first time I watched it. All he is teaching these owners much of the time is how to be perceived as an unpredictable asshole by their dogs.

    Dude you are so wrong about Joel Beckman and you are placing his words out of context. You can't pick apart what he says according to each phrase because sometimes it means one thing sometimes it means another thing and I know that can't make sense for your brain but it does for those who know what to head and not take literally.

      @@roberthynesdogtraining since when is "dude" a negative thing to say? I grew up in the 90s! But you can block me if you wish. The dog world needs less bickering amongst everybody and more understanding. It's okay for everybody to do things a little bit different. As long as everybody has the dog's best interest.

    What I have seen so far of him, he can’t read dogs. His ideas about how to deal with a dog are basically okay, but he uses them destructively, because he can’t read dogs. His dominance stuff is hurtful, even if there are occasions where you might have to do it, but he doesn’t really understand dog. And he is afraid of some dogs (because he can’t read them I guess).

      Trainers don't care about the cause of the behaviours - and that is the very science of behaviour - discovering its causes. Applied Behavioural Analysis is applying the understanding of the behavior - not applying reward and punishments.
      All we ever see is trainers trying to stop behaviours, shut down behaviours - and that always ends in control and management which can/will destroy an owners life and fatten up the trainers wallet.
      Dog trainers need to get out of the behavioural ring. All they are doing is killing dogs.

    • @Zao2050
      @Zao2050 7 месяцев назад

      Couldn’t agree more, as I said, they should have to pass a basic behaviorist test to be able to be dog trainers, so they can read dogs and don’t just blatantly disrespect them

    I think you’re wrong in the sense that you’re saying that with exercise it would end it but that’s not true a doctor behave this way it’s always going to find a fight that’s why you have to correct it and I have a Belgium Malinois and I’ve had Dobermans, Rottweilers and German Shepherd and they’re really hard when they’re young to correct this behavior because they just want to play there’s still Young but that’s why I do you correct them at this point. That’s what he’s getting at not the fact that he’s not getting exercise you didn’t even know if you got exercise he say he’s all riled up because he doesn’t get an exercise but you really don’t know like I said, I had plenty of wax with my young German Shepherd, and he still was like this doesn’t matter.

      I don’t remember Robert saying that it will all end with it, but in case he didn’t, trust me, the work can only start after the dog has gotten rid of some of that excess energy and frustration that has built up over time. Oh, and anyone that speaks dog can see that this dog has a lot of excess energy, there are not many assumptions made in this video by Robert, just reading the dog’s body language.
