Spectre (2015) Opening Credits With Radiohead's "Spectre"

- Leading up to the release of the twenty-fourth Bond film Spectre, rumors circulated about who would be recording the theme song for the film. Lots of names were tossed around, and many hoped that Radiohead would be chosen to create a theme, perhaps a revamped version of fan favorite "Big Boots".
And though Sam Smith was ultimately chosen to perform the theme to "Spectre", James Bond and Radiohead fans were shocked when, on Christmas Morning, Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke announced on Twitter that the band had, in fact, recorded a song for the film, but it was not selected. Yorke included a link to the song, also titled "Spectre".
To see what could have been, I took Radiohead's "Spectre" and edited the opening sequence to fit the track. There's a few rough bits (and, in the end, I did not remove Smith's credit), but I hope you enjoy!
Radiohead doesn’t make music for people going through it.
They make music for people in it.
Im14andthisisdeep
Man, it's amazing what it does to this scene.
Rather than a generic Bond intro, it's now about Bond's brokenness, his medicating with women and alcohol, his loneliness, the husk of his former self his job has turned him into.
@@bibianaguadalupeislasherre9880 Modern Bond is a melancholic character and that doesn't save the chosen song for being flat and bland.
The quote “we’re more ghosts than people” - Arthur Morgan (RDR2) describes Bond very well at this stage of his story
@@QKvox Well said
Wow what a beautiful summary. I hope you looked the final part of the best bond epic trip.
Radiohead Opening: Hopelessness with boundless ingenuity. The contrast between emptiness and creation. Bond’s creativity in the midst of impossible circumstances.
Sam Smith: “How do I live? How do I breathe?”
This could have been one of the greatest Bond themes ever.
In my heart, it _is_ a Bond theme.
Could have been?....it is,
and no one can change my mind
It is
It is
Musically it’s genius, it’s worthy of an academy award. Mistake not using it.
5 years later and I'm still salty about this song being snubbed
Me too man
Me three
Me four
Me five
Me seven (007)
It was a wise decision to go with Sam Smith’s Writings on the wall. A mediocre movie deserves an equally mediocre theme song. Radiohead’s Spectre is just fantastic
I read the first part and I said to myself hold on
You got me on the first half, not gonna lie
I like the cut of your jib!
Couldn’t agree more.
BUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUURN!
In an interview, Sam smith said he wrote the song in five minutes. I really don’t think he put much effort into it. James Bond producers should have gone with Radiohead
Well I mean yeah smiths lyrics are very surface level, you don’t really have to think about it
And plus Radiohead had a more interesting melody, plus they obviously put more effort into it. And it just works so well.
I know nothing about music but radiohead said they stopped another album to make this song.
Yeah I can tell it was written in 5 minutes it’s awful & depressing
@@dysonwitwer6430 They stopped A Moon Shaped Pool for this? They must've really really cared. That album is a modern masterpiece and while I legit love Sam Smith's Writing On The Wall, watching it first before this edited version with just a change in song made for such a different and emotional experience when it comes to this introduction, even if the film following was a letdown.
Its amazing how well Radiohead's version syncs with the opening credits, like it was purged last minute and redubbed with Sam Smith
I think the description says the credits were reedited to the Radiohead song
1:16 "your lips" whilst a close up shot of lips, definitely edited for radiohead
It looks like an amateur student's edit IMO. The sound quality is also shat.
@@TheOminousFlareShow You just blow in from stupid town, buddy?
I mean, it doesn’t though. As great as this song is it does not at all match with the visuals whilst it perfectly does with Writing on the Wall. Not dissing it, just saying.
This sounds more Bondish than the other intro they went with.
Well it has the benefit of not being written by Sam Smith (not saying Smith is a bad singer, but he's definitely not suited to writing Bond songs)
I’ll have to disagree on that, the Sam smith has that string flourish that is super bondish, though this song is really surprisingly bondish, I would never peg Radiohead for a james bond song.
john doe nah this gotta be the most bond song ever written. It’s super reminiscent of everything I associate with bond. Writings on the wall to me is just an average pop song with a decent string flair that does nothing beyond that
@@johndoe-ir5nb This was an orchestral masterpiece with so many tributes to the original bond theme. Radiohead's submission was much deeper and well thought out than Sam's but, Sam is trendier, with more dramatic flare with a lot of higher pitch. They knew how to get the newer generation's attention.
@@johndoe-ir5nb nah Sam Smith one is just lazy old bond theme song formula eon production repeats itself. A slow moaning voice with barely any instrumental. Compared to radio head's song, it doesn't make any sense, radiohead song describe bond's life

Dispossessed, taken host
My hunger burns a bullet hole
A spectre of my mortal soul
These rumors and suspicion
Anger is a poison
The only truth that I could see
Is when you put your lips to me
Future's tricked by the past
Spectre, how he laughs
Fear puts a spell on us
Always second-guessing love
My hunger burns a bullet hole

The only truth that I can see

But always hit the floor
I've spent a lifetime running
And I always get away
But with you I'm feeling something
That makes me want to stay
I'm prepared for this
I never shoot to miss
But I feel like a storm is coming
If I'm gonna make it through the day
Then there's no more use in running
This is something I gotta face
If I risk it all
Could you break my fall?
How do I live? How do I breathe?
When you're not here I'm suffocating
I want to feel love, run through my blood
Tell me is this where I give it all up?
For you I have to risk it all
Cause the writing's on the wall
A million shards of glass
That haunt me from my past
As the stars begin to gather
And the light begins to fade
When all hope begins to shatter
Know that I won't be afraid

@@IndoFahmi Bond songs are an outline more or less of the plot or the character conflict. Smith’s song captures Bond’s feelings for Madeleine , his mission, and the confrontation with Spectre
@@gaby85 Smiths version does not sound like it’s a bond theme
@@vrtrunky552 How does a bond theme sounds? 🤔
@@gaby85 A Bond theme is unique, it's mysterious, it's supposed to fill you with adrenaline and thrill. It's supposed to make you think about the lyrics after you watch the movie and think "Oh shit, the whole thing was right there in the intro". THAT is the uniqueness of the Bond theme. It is supposed to catch the essence of an espionage film, of a Bond film.
The worse thing is someone would be watching spectre in 20/30 years and think what the hell is this. It would have been a introduction to radiohead. Such a crappy decision to replace it.
It's uncanny how well this syncs up. I wonder if they made this part while still thinking Radiohead was the choice
They give the bands that they ask to make the theme a time that they need to meet and the themes / atmosphere that the song needs to portray so that the animators and artist can work at the same time and the music will sync up with the visuals on screen
Radioheas should have be rewarded for their "Spectre". Hauntingly beautiful.
This may be my favorite James Bond theme ever. It took me a couple of listens, but it's fantastic and fits the titles so well. Beautiful and haunting.
It does take a few tries to really appreciate it. We're so used to the punch of the big band that we get shocked with something so... melancholic. This song is pleasant to listen to the same way dark chocolate is delicious.

@@44Heisenberg44 lol, i really hope you have a sad life
But what's worse is they soured their relationship with Radiohead so we'll likely never get a used bond song from them now
This song is too good for what Spectre was. My god radio head has always been majestic!
Even if the movie is average, they’re big fans of the franchise. Having a bond song is a big achievement.
This is what happens when the director only listens to popular Spotify playlists
or bubblegum over art.
WHY the fuck did we not get this?! This is Haunting! 🙏🏻
it feels like the visuals match the Radiohead song perfectly. how the scenes change along with the song.
the Producers of this film, doesn't realize the dedication of radiohead's Spectre to the Bonds theme
I was also waiting for Portishead but that didn't happen. It's all "pop" again.
Took me a few listens but this would have been a better choice. It would stand out as a Bond theme amongst others (in a good way). Sam Smith's song was just basic and lyric wise it was a love song for... who exactly? This wasn't a film about love. It was about Bond going up against his arch nemesis. SPECTRE is a mysterious and deadly organisation, the song should have reflected that which this song does.
Erm, Spectre was most definitely a love story. Like 30% of the runtime was dedicated to stuff with Madeleine, and honestly with the silliness of Spectre (the organization) and the weak attempt to retcon Blofeld as the mastermind behind all the Craig films, I didn't mind it. Remember this is one of the few Bond films in which the female lead survives and is shown running off with Bond, and possibly the only one in which she returns as a lead character in the subsequent film.
Doesn't change the fact that "Writing's on the Wall" is a crappy song, but not just because it's a love song.
"The only truth that I can see is when you put your lips to me" doesn't sound like a love song to you?
no Spectre was definitely about love, or more so Bond fighting internally about what he should choose "love or duty". This song represents the inner quarrel of Bond so well, it's like the song is calling his inner-self . Him wanting to move on or doing his duty, the other part running into him and wanting to choose love. The song is like "currents" moving against each other, you can feel and hear that in the way the rhythm is built. Also the way that the music become louder towards the end represents how much of a burden this inner fight becomes and also the way the instruments begin to play more "against" each other. There are also some very distinct "Bond" notes that you can recognise from the other movies hidden in the song, it's like Bond's saying "I'm still here". Very beautiful composition, but also the lyrics. They describe Jame's internal turmoil astoundingly well. Radiohead tore a piece of Bond's soul and translated that to this song
It's about love, man, that's what they went for when they made Spectre. The Blofeld plot was weak, and everything else was a mess even the 'love' story between Bond and Madeline. It could have been much better if they focused on 007 and his enemy, so Sam Smith's song was actually accurate to the plot even when it was not Bond theme. Radiohead made it better, tho, it was a shame they wasted this one.
@@killbill9847 That sounds incredibly dull and overplayed. Besides, Bond already made that decision in the first film, he chose love over duty.
this is a top 5 all time Bond song on the shelf. A lot of people lamenting Amy Winehouse never got a Bond song...it would be very disappointing to not have a Radiohead Bond song.
the “rumours and suspicion” gives me goosebumps everytime, they did radiohead dirty with not choosing their theme
This is literally the perfect Bond song, fight me
The movie Spectre is criminally underrated. Oh no, hold on I misread the script. The movie Spectre is criminally underwritten. The movie got the theme it deserved.
this has a more prominent malicious and almost melancholy tone, whilst writing on the wall is just a basic ass James Bond song it’s not significant to the pain bond feels
"It was a wise decision to go with Sam Smith’s Writings on the wall. A mediocre movie deserves an equally mediocre theme song. Radiohead’s Spectre is just fantastic" - Andrés Blanco, top comment on this video
From Casino Royale on it's all about Vesper. Everything else is a job or vengeance.
WHY. WAS. THIS. NOT. USED.
side note - there was a guy who bet like 50 grand on Radiohead being the music act...
By far better than writings on the wall
Not a fair comparison tbh, it'd be like comparing Einstein with my high school physics teacher
Jonny's string arranging skills are amazing.
imagine a bond film built around this song. What a beautiful movie it would have been.
Wow it even looks like it was edited around the lyrics. Almost like this was originally going to be the opening theme and it was made with it in mind, but someone decided to switch it up at the last moment for whatever reason.
This video has been edited to fit the song.
If you watch the actual opening with Sam Smith’s awful song on it you’ll see it’s different.
yeah let's pass up Thom Yorke's exquisite lyrics and vocals plus Oscar winning orchestration from Jonny Greenwood plus Grammy nominated production from Nigel Godrich for a fucking flash in the pan. Good choice, Broccoli's
Is it just me, it's giving me Sigur Ros vibe....
A mixture of depression & hopefulness.
So surreal.
What a missed opportunity. This song is superior to what they got now in the movie.
I didn’t consider James Bond themes are chosen from multiple artists even though, that makes sense-I just thought that they chose one and worked with them on the song. Anyway, besides that this sounds good in my opinion, I also just like the idea of using a band that has been around for some time. Maybe they’ll be used to write another or so I hope
Same story with Tomorrow Never Dies. The Bond producers rejected the amazing song from Swan Lee, instead picking Cheryl Crow's meh version.

History really does repeat itself
I had no idea Radiohead did a Bond theme! Honestly there's no fair comparison to this. Spot. On. Mix of tones that hit you out of nowhere that tell you about the character conflict of James Bond. Solid. Ass. Masterpiece. Radiohead getting rejected here might just be the biggest missed opportunity for any James Bond opening ever made
This theme changes the entire movie.
The pain in Bond, the loss, the world upside down...so much. I agree.
It's a crime no one in production thought of making an alternate intro with this song from radiohead, and show it to the producers before releasing the movie.
Goosebumps. I am honestly disgusted that this wasn't chosen for the movie.
I’ll never understand the choice to use that rubbish we ended up with. Radiohead’s Spectre is beautiful, opulent, elegant and perfect.
they were both great i havent even seem the movie yet. but casino royale has my favorite intro because of chris cornell
@@Nathaniel2323 Agreed
I'm probably the only one here who does like Writing's on the Wall, but yeah this song should've been in the movie instead
I absolutely LOVE the chromatic phrases in this masterpiece. So sad it wasn’t picked 🥺
That moment where the best Bond song is one that doesn’t even appear in the movie.
I still skip over the opening credits and the kids have no idea why. I should edit in this one instead.
My God, what a song.
This song is what happens when you combine "Moon Shaped Pool" and "Amnesiac"
Imagine picking a song by flavour of the month Sam Smith over a beautiful song by genuine legends. Radiohead's music from 25 years ago is still miles ahead of anything recorded by anyone else since. They'll always remain exclusive because they're too much, and I'm ok with that. Makes me feel like even more of a music snob 😂
Be honest with yourself. This song from Thom is absolute crap.

Such a perfect song to match the intro. What a waste not to use it.
Writing on the wall has a beautiful orchestration with atonal lyrics. Spectre has a romantically disillusioned melody with ominous lyrics.
This is what separates nice from iconic
I agree with you 100%, the melody and all on Writing on the wall is great to sing along to, but the lyrics are very, you know what they are, but Spectre’s lyrics are amazing.
Probably the best Bond song and the producers Fked up and didn’t use it. Crazy.
This song should have been used in Spectre. It perfectly captures the mood and atmosphere which is dark. For Sam Smith, I would rather hear the instrumental because it's epic. His lyrics don't really go well with the song.
I can't believe they pulled this MASTERPIECE for Sam Smith
Guess it’s some pc bullshit.
@@brettmajors69karaoke no. Not everything is a decision for you to rage against. Fucking hell.
They called Radiohead and wanted to use the 'unreleased' Man of War but it was an old song in their back catalogue and they figured they couldn't use a previously recorded song when Bond songs are always new recordings for the current movie/title. It would have been exempt from the Oscars too
So they moved on to second choice Sam Smith only for Thom Yorke to get back in touch and explain he'd written a new song by which point the wheels were already in motion and it was too late to change course.
Just one of those things. No motive.
I can't believe they didn't use this!
They fucked this up.
When you get Radiohead to record a song for your film, YOU DON'T CHOOSE SAM SMITH! (Sam Smith was relatively new and successful after 2014, RADIOHEAD WAS ALREADY SEEN AS ONE OF THE GREATEST BANDS OF ALL TIME!)
Thanks so much for making this.
Amazingly beautiful, soulful, contemplation of the interior. This will go down as one of the best themes that was never to be.
It drives me nuts that the theme and the title don’t match I like Sams song but this is phenomenal. I currently work at at cinema and no time to die is playing. So it’s bond theme galore. Thanks to Cinemawins for directing me to this absolute gem and missed opportunity.
If chosen, this would have been the best Bond tune in a very long time. Absolutely love this. Most other modern Bond artist just sound too plain and predictable in their songwriting. Their Bond songs don't really move me at all.
This isn't necessarily "groundbreaking" either but to me it's still artistically on another level.
Sounds better and fits better with the opening credits.
Beautiful visuals, this could’ve been my favorite bond opening instead of my least favorite.
Oh my.. this is still the best damn best Bond song of all times... to me at least...
You are got damn right!
You are got damn right!
You are got damn right!

Jack White and Alicia Keys Another Way to Die is my personal favorite, but I be lovin' me some Radiohead for sure and wish this song was the one they had used in the film.
This is hands down the supperior theme. There is no question.
I love the way you timed the video edits, thematically and rhythmically, to the music.
Unpopular opinion: I think Radiohead's version could fit better with the end credits, those ryhtmic patterns are beautiful and the strings part gives me chills but in my opinion it still lacks that orchestral sound so famous of Bond's films. I also think Sam Smith's version lacks character, the orchestration is there but Sam's voice doesn't really fit in there. I'm pretty sure they rejected Radiohead's version not because it was too dark (it's actually a lot lighter than Sam's) but because it's ambigous in both harmony and ryhthm, something more difficult for the regular audience to remember. If Radiohead's version was to be used it'd need to be darker, maybe by not using the modulation from the key at the start to D major, because major tonalities are too bright both for a Bond theme and for this movie's tone in specific.
In the end the studios working on this film were excessively cautious at creating the balance between a classic Bond theme and a pop song and ended up delivering a tasteless final product. Such a shame they decided not to push their boundaries and create a film coherent in tone and presentation (both script and musicalization)
while i think, on its own, that radioheads song is an incredibly beautiful piece of music....i agree that the major key feel and the whole shift of feel when the song resolves into the “a” section the second time, would have worked better as a bond theme, had they instead written this section around the chromatic line which defines james bond theme songs...and totally did a radiohead cover of that line cliche over the “bond song” minor key progression with a major chord substitution. it would have been so epic and triumphant and so “james bond” ..its also would have, in my opinion, made the climax of the song work better with the opening sequence...building that classic bond line over the classic bond chord progression up into the creepy intense “b” section would have fit really well with the overall characteristics which define this james bond and his story arc...unfortunately because that middle section sounds a little out if place when contrasted against the images on the screen, it makes the transition to the climax feel very abrupt.
personally i wouldn’t change a thing about the song as it exists...its a beautiful song...but if i were radiohead, i would have made the above mentioned changes for the sake of the film.
It doesn't lack orchestral sounds. It's full of them. It was rejected because it was considered too dark. The desolate vocals are way darker than those found in any other Bond song. The rhythm is unusual, original. This was too good for a Bond film.
@@Ben-pd2bx It does climax. The ending is huge when you finally get the Bond chords. It's highly cinematic.
Honestly I don't think it would work well for an opening title at all. I'm not a Radiohead fan and most definetly not a Sam Smith fan either (writing's on the wall is the first song I ever heard from him) so I'm sitting at neutral ground here. Took me 3 listens of this to be able to get over the uncommon rhythms and start liking it, and that's something you don't want for an opening title. For an opening title the general audience (largely not radiohead fans) must like the opening the first time they listen to it because they won't get another shot at it. It must be a simple, recognizable, familiar time signature, with easy to follow melody, which this simply is not. I also think it's too dissonant and melancholic for an opening title, I'd go in expecting a great tragedy instead of an epic, which is definetly not the tone of the movie at all
learned from the documentary, now i know why everyone of the crews love this.
Daniel Craig a huge Radiohead fan.
What an incredible mistake looking back now... imagine how well this song would've set the tone for what inevitably happens at the end of No Time to Die.
It is even better that this track didn’t become a bond track... made it even more exclusive and way and above to another level... simply beautiful
I love this song. It is both Radiohead in top form and pure Bond, with those gorgeous strings elegantly tying the whole piece back to the 007 franchise.
I thought perhaps it was rejected because it was too melancholy or not "radio friendly" enough, but relistening to the Sam Smith, I find the one they went with to be paced about the same and far less memorable, so who knows why the producers did what they did.
One thing is for sure: they passed on one of the greatest Bond themes of all time.
Imagine dropping Radiohead
In my mind this is accepted as a ligid Bond Theme, and i see it as such.
I ask, I demand, to have my version of this film, re-edited with the Radiohead version, it is incredible
Agreed but it isn’t going to be done because they are spiteful.
I love how its pretty much universally agreed that this version is much better than Writing's on the Wall. Yes, the movie might not deserve a song as good as Spectre, but it would have been so cool to see Thom Yorke get an Oscar for an actually worthy best original song.
The film itself doesn't deserve this song.
This is SO very much “007 meets Radiohead Universe”.
this could have been a dark bond movie... goddamn
I never new but thanks to The Sound of 007 doc on Amazon Prime that Radiohead’s Man of War was their original Bond theme entry but as they’d released it on a live album, it broke the rule that a Bond theme had to be unreleased. They then wrote Spectre but it came too late to edit together with an opening credit sequence.
They should sell copies of the film with the Radiohead theme. ...or make it an option on the Blu-ray?
A silver lining... had they stuck with the Radiohead theme, we would likely have ended up with a lighter and thinner version.
i hope Christopher Nolan will get radiohead again if he gonna direct a james bond movie
Brilliant. Surely the film's producers must've realised by now that they made a HUGE mistake by replacing Radiohead's stately, ominous masterwork with S** S****'?
This is superb.
I wouldn't say it's "too dark", it's rather too melancholic and introspective... It so needed another Bond movie written for it!

@@mooniemuk it wouldn’t say the other song says nothing just because you’re mad they didn’t chose the Radiohead version
You couldn't have asked for a better Bond theme than Radiohead's Spectre. Everything about the song feels...off. Discordant. It's almost as if Radiohead isn't even trying. The drum's off-kilter rhythm, the jarring vocals. It's such a perfect representation of how Bond must be feeling.
He's lost Vesper. M. Everything worth fighting and caring for. He's become no different than a specter who can never be seen or heard by anyone. Suddenly, he just drops the charismatic facade he's always had. He's indifferent to the lifestyle his spy work has brought upon him. All the women, all the hedonistic pleasures...it means nothing to him now. He just doesn't have the enthusiasm to keep doing this anymore. He is so desperate to bring everything to a close. To just stop. But alas, 007 has to keep going, because the mission he has in Spectre was given to him by M - the only other person he holds mutual respect for. This is just the least he can do.
It is what makes the beginning and ending of the opening title so much more profound - Bond isn't focused on any of the women that surround him. He thinks of all that has happened. All the sacrifices he's made. He stares ahead, knowing he has another job to do, uncaring of everything around him. One final mission, just for M.
And then you watch the movie and it's fucking lame. So it makes sense that Sam Smith's version made it over Radiohead's. A lame song for a lame movie.
This is the best Bond opening ever! It is hypnotizing. What was Sam Mendes thinking?
bruh the angst and melodrama is just *chef’s kiss*
Million times better than the other one
At least the opening would've been good. There would've been one good thing in this turd of a movie...
Unpopular opinion: I can see why this wasn’t picked. The 007 franchise wants songs that hit big in the charts, and this could never be that song.
It just ain’t commercial enough.
