    Got a 1981 TA with a 455 too! If it’s a smogger era 73-76 try initial advance around 15 degrees and it will help with drive ability. Lots of those years had crappy highway gear ratios like 2.73 or 3.08. I got 3.42 with Eaton posi and it works great with 455 all around driving. Burns out all day long!

      I’ll let my buddy know cause I’m pretty sure it’s a 74 455. Rear gears are unknown but I’m sure she’ll scoot down the road just fine. I think it’s really just going to be a car show and cruise around car

    I’ve got a 1980 T/A that had a 301. I have a rebuilt 455 out of a ‘73 Catalina that’s going in it. My ‘80 has power windows.

      It’s been sitting for 10 years tho, carb needs to be rebuilt and I’m sure fuel system needs to be gone through

    • @UncleJimmema
      @UncleJimmema Год назад +1

      @RustBeltLife yeah, the left adjustment was wide open and the right was shut. Closed them both then backed em off. Now it idles evenly, still running a bit rich but not nearly as bad.

    Accelerator pump in the Edelbrock (carter) is shot. Look down the bowl and see if when you give it gas if it is getting a full shot of fuel. I bet its not getting 100%. On a low compression mild cam 455 should be 14-16 initial timing and 34-36 degrees total timing. Get the lightest springs on the advance curve kit from Mr Gasket (Holley) and that should be close. I also ran a Crane Cams Adjustable Vacuum advance (you could tune the advance with an allen wrench in the dashpot on the distributor). With that mild cam 3.08 or 3.23 gears would work great. Also a bit of converter 11" B&M Holeshot works good. Didn't see what heads are on it so couldn't tell what compression the motor is. Almost positive would be a flat top piston so if you check out what head casting # is on the center exhaust port you can find out what the valve and chamber size and see if it is good. If it is 6X heads then its about 9.4-1. Great find and good luck!

    How much are those going for in that condition these days?

    • @RustBeltLife
      @RustBeltLife  Год назад

      Best guess is $12k-$18k

    • @danhoyland142
      @danhoyland142 Год назад

      Looks solid but the value depends on the condition of the tailpan in the back. Even if the whole car is solid and that one piece is not you can subtract 4 to 5,000 on its value. The tail pan is the trans am guys nightmare bc it’s a huge pain in the ass to replace and to do it you have to cut the last 13 inches of the car off, weld a new tailpan in( they finally make repops) and then weld the quarters to it.
      Also, for frame of reference I had a 80 black trans am I sold in the summer of 2021. The original 301 was swapped with a built 400 with receipts. Tail pan was rotted and so were the bottom of the doors but everything else was great. Body mounts were mint too. I tuned it up , detailed the engine bay, mirror polished the whole car, and put fresh decals on. I sold it for 8,000 dollars in less than ten hours. Later found out that kid who bought it flipped it for 12k a week later and this was two years ago. I think 12 to 16k is the right ballpark and having a 455 is a big perk.

      @@danhoyland142I figured I was kind of in the right ball park but that much cut off price for the rear quarters I’m assuming is what you’re calling the tail pan?

    • @danhoyland142
      @danhoyland142 11 месяцев назад

      Not the rear quarters. The tailpan is the piece of sheet metal that runs across the back of the car that the quarters are welded to on the back of the car. It’s hard to explain but if you open the trunk and look directly down where the taillights slip into, that’s the tailpan. If that is solid on the inside and underneath, your golden. It’s one of the first things real firebird enthusiasts check. If that spot is solid then they know they have a car with good bones. This is a sweet ride man, hope it works out for you
