The 6 Second PS4 Blue Light of Death (BLOD) - Diagnosis and Repair

  • Опубликовано: 11 окт 2024
  • This video looks at another variation on the PS4 Blue Light of Death theme - the "6 Second" BLOD - This is a similar symptom as a typical 2 second BLOD but lasts for anywhere between 5-10 seconds before powering off. Commonly there is no fan activity and this only seems to happen after a drop or impact event.
    This video covers the symptoms and then the final diagnosis and repair techniques required to restore functionality to your PlayStation 4 games console.

    Thanks for replying mate. I was on a RUclips account I didn't even know I had I'm on correct account now lol.
    1st ps4 2 sec blod = APU reballed twice, 1st attempt noticed no fan with 6 sec blod so reballed again to be sure then reflowed southbridge (nudge testing) tested still no fan with 6sec blod
    2nd ps4 intermittent blod sometimes not powering up and then powering up for 2sec and shutting down = reflowed APU twice now also has 6sec blod no fan. I've not touched the southbridge yet.
    I've ordered a stencil to reball southbridge however do you think the ram may need reworking too? I've never attempted to rebal ram before and don't want to risk frying these if I don't have to. A bit lost here mate thanks for any input.

    I just took apart my PS4 pro to clean it cause the past 3 days it’s done something funny my fan was loud and then it gave a error code and turned off so then the last two times it said it was to hot and then shut down. I took the hole thing apart and it was not all that bad so I looked at the Arctic silver that I had just did last year and it did not look that bad but redid it anyway so I put it back together it powered on loaded and was waiting for it to download a update and when I come back after 30 mins it was off and when I push the power button it comes on and then right off with the blue light do u have any ideas what it could be u seem to know a decent amount about the ps4

  • @tuner200i

    hello mate. I wrote you a message a while ago, I also posted on bgamods (nobody replied there) about a ps4 i have. The console was opened by me the first time, it had the 2 second BLOD. the Apu was getting hot though, and if I applied pressure on the big capacitor close to the southbridge, sometimes it would stay on longer (one time even pulse forever). I thought the problem was not on the APU since nothing happened when I applied pressure to it and because it was getting hot. I tried reflowing both the southbridge and apu first, with no success. I just finished reballing the APU just now. There were no lifted pads, but 2 pads on the APU were very bad oxidized, that I had to scratch them in order to get the solder to stick on them (both the pads were exactly on the corners - one that edge line of 3 pads, one facing the side towards the speaker and the other diagonally opposite). I believe the reballing went ok, chip still warms up, but now i have a 5-6 second BLOD with 3 pulses. There is no fan, it looks only like it wants to start (moves for 2-3mm when powering on) and that's all. According to your video, the problem should be in the southbridge. the reflow failed once, so should I try a reball? or should I just replace the southbrige? did it ever happen to you to find a defective one? or are there any known small components around the southbridge that usually go bad? thanks for your time to help us all. i guess it's a win-win situation, since we get to know these consoles better without having any diagrams or repair manuals

      +tuner200i Hi mate,
      From what you describe, yes I'd attempt a reball of the Southbridge. If you have a scrap board with a known-good chip then I'd be tempted to use that. Good luck!

    So I have mine running with a clamp applying a great deal of pressure towards the front center of the console/that set of three NEC capacitors (by the power button, but a little farther in). When pressure is applied to the APU it still has the on-off BLOD issue/but when pressure is applied directly on top of those caps it continues running (has been for a while). That led me to believe that the problem does not lie in the APU but a connection break in that area? Have you experienced this/found a fix?

    • @AndrewPaul
      @AndrewPaul  2 года назад

      No - that to me sounds like a potential hard drive issue - if you pull the drive out then try and turn it on, do you get the 'Unable to Access Storage' message on screen? Failing that, UART will likely be a good way to try and troubleshoot what's happening with the console.

      Yes you can, although it'll make it much easier to have a pre-heater below the board (and it'll be kinder to the board and chip as well).

    so just bought this PS4 and noticing that it has the blue light when you turn it on and it turns on and shuts off I've also noticed that there's no power to the fan you can't hear the fan at all but I do notice that when you push the button and it turns on you can hear the hard drive make a slight small sound however there is no power to the fan and it will not accept the discs or go into safe mode could the fact that the fan is not getting power be the cause by the power supply

    • @AndrewPaul
      @AndrewPaul  8 лет назад

      Most likely a Southbridge fault as this brings the power rails up and you're not getting all of them. Reflow it properly and this should be enough to get it going. Cheers.

      +SuperEmil2010 not really as we've no schematics or other specifications for it. Do you get the standby voltages present at the top end of the board? There's some small 6 pin ICs by the power connector where they reside and kick in from but can't remember of the top of my head exactly which ones and can't check as I'm currently on holiday. Have a prod with a multimeter and you should find them with a bit of experimentation. Cheers.

    if I change my motherboard will it fix B.L.O.D .

    • @AndrewPaul
      @AndrewPaul  9 лет назад

      +Jose Castillo Hi Jose,
      That's dependant on whether the motherboard is the problem. If your console displays a BLOD, can you power cycle the system using the front power button? If so, then yes replacing the motherboard will cure your BLOD. If not and the only way to attempt to power the machine down / back on is to remove the power lead from the PS4 first and then plugging it back in then the power supply (PSU) is at fault and replacing this should result in a working PS4 again.
      If you do end up replacing the motherboard then ensure that the replacement board comes with it's MATCHING (original, married) BD-ROM Drive Logic Board as failure to install this alongside the new motherboard will result in a CE-35888-2 error when trying to play disc-based PS4 games. Also try to ensure that the BD-ROM logic board matches the version on your current BD-ROM drive's logic board (starts with BDP-xxx where the x's are numbers i.e. 010, 020 etc). This is because the laser I/O ribbons are different between board revisions and may result in you being unable to plug your laser into the new board again rendering disc-based games impossible to play.
      Matching sets of boards are very, very difficult to come across and are expensive if you can find them. Best bet is to try and find someone to fix your BLOD board in the first instance.
      Good luck!

      I have been sitting on a few systems with the 3 beep error (Only the 12xx series) and realized today that they are NOR related issues... Well certainly going to be worth getting the equipment to sort them out - What interface device do you recommend for dealing with the NOR chip? I was thinking of getting the PI as it has many other uses too and suppose its more worthwhile to get. I don't mind getting things specific for the repairs though as I deal with enough PS4s to merit it :)

      @AndrewPaul  2 года назад

      The on then off after a couple of seconds tend to be APU / RAM related. If it's on / off within a second or less than 1 second, and further attempts to press power with no reaction is observed until wall power is removed and re-applied, that tends to be PSU related.
