Right? Demetrius survived first round, no one expected him to dominate a pure stand-up fight against a muay thai fighter of that caliber, and then took him down in second round. Literaly no surprise what so ever. Great fight though and great performance from both fighters!
Here we saw it again. A skilled grappler will almost always win over a striker. When they put wrestlers against boxers the wrestlers win 9 times out of 10. That is why Fedor Emelianenko was so superfort.
@@bradwillis6457not real wrestlers then. Besides, wouldn't exactly call a bar fight where people are intoxicated, surrounded by alcohol and bottles, the same as a real or serious fight. More like drunken egos looking to blow off steam
Muy Thai is striking specialist combat sport. MMA by evolution is a generalist. You have to understand all 3 archtypes (grappling, wrestling and striking). You dont have to be black belt in all 3, but you need some basic skills.
Reminds me of the early days of UFC where are all the disciplines fought in the elimination tournament. At least for me that was the first time I saw grappling and how dominant it was against every other discipline.
Great video. I'm currently 6months in to Muay Thai and i definitely want to work something like Brazilian Jujitsu into my mix. I'm never going to fight professionally or anything, but I think knowing more than one discipline is a must for fighting and self defense in the real world.
MMA vs everything else it’s already been done. Facts are MMA stemmed from all of the best of many styles that proved to work. Most often people go into MMA knowing 2 or more styles usually grappling submission based and a stand up base style then learn and adapt from there on based on what works. So even the baddest of one style can be beaten if they aren’t well versed on all styles that don’t anger to as many ring rules but more real life situation rules. Johnson’s really good rodtang is one of the best in his field yet he lost. The man never loses. Even gave him the first round his way.
No, this happened just like anybody with any sort of intelligence would have guessed DJ got his ass whipped on his feet and then when it went to MMA rules, he was dominant
You could tell Rodtang only did enough practice in MMA to know how dangerous it would be to be grabbed. Johnson didn't try to go full kickboxer to win. He needed to keep his pacing up and wait it out. I saw another fight yesterday that was quite the opposite. It was an MMA match in which you could tell one guy trained BJJ almost exclusively. The Thai fighter was good at "just get up." So he neutralized the ground game and got up to keep kicking the BJJ guy.
Johnson is the best mma artist in history. He defeated the entire roster of UFC fighters and then some. It got boring for the fans and himself. Dana had the best and he let him go.
This just shows why Muay Thai fighters don't cross over to MMA. In a pure stand up fight, they have a chance. Once the ground game comes into play they are in over their head.
@DUDEBroHey The main reason is MMA has pretty much killed boxing's viewership. Outside of gimmick fights like Paul/Tyson nobody really cares about boxing anymore. Ask your average person to name a boxer (not Mike Tyson) and most couldn't. Ask the same person to name an MMA fighter and you're more likely to get an answer.
I trained with some of the AMC guys back in the 90's . Traditional MT has been a part of that lineage since day one . Humes , Smith , Paulson, etc . They had an old timer named Luzshin (sp) that was born and raised in Thailand . So I don't think MM was struggling with it being a strict MT round , I think it was mostly because it was modified rules if I'm correct? That it's it F$%king Rodtang after all. Was a great fight , both had a lot to lose but they went for it anyhow .
I spoke nightclub bouncer a long time ago , he said a big guy once hit thinks twice about his actions , the little guy just keeps coming , he said they are a nightmare to deal with .
Without watching the vid: If they fight in the octogon (MMA rules) the MMA fighter should win. If they fight in a ring (Mui Thai rules) the Muay Thai fighter should win. Am I missing anything?
If Rodtang was fully trained in the Thai martial art of Muay, he would have had done much better than that. But, he did exceptionally well for the agreed upon rules and was a real champion after his defeat. In Rodtang's defense, a person who has truly learned traditional Thai martial arts, Muay Thai is for sport. For fun and betting. A way to earn money and pass the time. To gamble and provide for your family. True practitioners of Muay, Muay Boran or even the teachings from the Chapasarat, are fully versed techniques of self-defense meant for war and combat. It was MMA before MMA became popularized. Striking with the limbs, joints, feet, head, and the posterior of the body to hit all areas in self defense including the eyes and genitals. There are also grappling techniques. Not exactly the same as what the world knows but similar. To subdue and/or break limbs. Lastly, techniques with weapons. Like Krabi Krabong. Dual swords, dual spears, sword or spear with shield, knives, and tonfas'. Basically, a person similar to a young Tony Jaa (Jaa Pahnom) who is in fact a Master of Muay Boran. To me, MMA is like becoming Frankenstein. An amalgamation of the best parts of numerous different systems, but not a true martial art in the traditional sense as a whole. Yes, learning the best parts is good, but if you don't understand the weaknesses that come along with them also, you're cheating yourself on improving. A jack of all trades, but master of none. Those in MMA are great fighters none the less. That can't be taken away. Everyone will have different thoughts on this and that's ok.
I wanted to love MMA back when it was just starting to catch fire, thinking it'd be more raw than boxing. But then I'd get really bored when they all just started spooning for entire rounds... I get that it's the most practical approach to a fight, just not very exciting to some viewers.
When all is said and done in one to one ... taking your opponent's footing and grappling is the best way to subdue. Muay Thai is more vicious probably against more people, but Ju Jitsu wins in one to one
Now let's see him go into rodtangs ring and see how well he does. Can't see myself as a winner when all I do is run and hook up to waste time. Submission saved him and he knew that was his only way to win this otherwise he would lose in both rings. However I bet if rodtang started MMA training he'd wipe the floor with him.
Didn't look like Rodtang was getting nearly as much done in round one as the narrator said. He was perfectly allowed to use all of his Muay Thai in round two. It was just proved worthless against Johnson and he got crushed. Just what everyone would expect to happen.
there is no shitty submission. there is submission. they are both incredible strong and engaged world champion fighters and Rodtang didn't loose face, he goes to the very last step of the fight without release. Lot of respect also something you can learn about these both big champion : they accept the rule, they accept the fight, they accept and recognize the winner. that's it. Better for you if you just accept the facts.
wait wait wait.. what?? over 300 fights at the age of 24??? I mean there's a self proclaimed TBE in boxing that only has 50 pro fights, even if we add her non pro fights, it will still not going to come close to 300. Goddanmit, Thai fighters are built different
Too much choking in MMA. There are so many good moves and grabs, but fighters choose choking, because it's too effective. In street fight there are no rules, but this is sport, not a street fight, choking is effective as kicks in the balls and one is forbidden, one is not
Yea MMA guy couldn't fight but need to choke the opponent to give up. That's not best fighter. It's cheating! Choking shouldn't be allowed in any these fight. In that case why don't they jus have fighters choked each other see who lasted longer. Not fighting, just choking! 😅
Now if these 2 met in the real life time as enemies about fight. There isnt gonna be ok we fight Muay Tai first then MMA next. MMA coming out the gate. MMA is clear winner no matter what. 1 art vs all arts.
Johnson was getting shitmixed in that fight. Got lucky to get an advantageous position on Rodtangs back for the choke. Had that fight remained strikes / on their feet Johnson was done for
The only way you ever get better is when you lose I hope the Muay Thai fighter learns from this and decides to learn some grappling. I believe if he can learn to grapple, he will be a very good UFC fighter he definitely has the conditioning and the experience. I don’t think it will be too difficult for him to become a good grappler,, maybe two or three years under some of the best trainers and will be ready.. another good thing from this is that it took some of the arrogance that a lot of the Muay Thai fighters seem to have by claiming that their system is the best / in the UFC or MMA , There are no rules you can do anything you want you can use. the kryptonite of MT is grappling against the grappler you gotta learn both. If you wanna be a complete fighter. Best to use striking arts in the streets because you never know who the guys friends are that might sneak up behind you while you’re trying to do a rear naked choke and people decide to start kicking you in the head, even worse - weapons. Thailand people have a very great pride in their arts and in their country. I’m not sure that this contest will make them see that they need to learn grappling. Hopefully they will.. because I think Thailand has a very good supply of good fighters. If they are trained in the MMA systems they can really dominate. They just need to lower their ego whether they are champion or not a champion and if the American guy wants to learn MT he has a whole new skill set to learn and train but MT is only good when you’re standing up.
The bite and other deadly target areas are the way out of those elementary grappling techniques. Obviously not part of the fun in the ring, but don't be choked out and curb stomped in the street Better to be judged by 12 than carried away by 6 Interesting fight anyways I wonder why the boxer came out slow in the 2nd...
