Choosing the cladding for your garden room can be a tough choice so here I break down how to go about deciding. Obviously I can only really show the cladding choices I made in any detail so this felt like a good way to address the topic more broadly.
In summary, think about:
-Vertical or horizontal
-Aesthetics
-Cost
-Durability
-Maintenance/Upkeep
-Style/Profile
-Finish (oil etc)

@@Jack-nl7hz Hi mate, it was about £4500 in total. That includes electrics, plaster and doors. Definitely cost effective if you can do it yourself. I’m certainly not a builders but it definitely achievable. Good luck 👍🏻
Beautiful choices for your home! I love the durability, low maintenance, and fire protection from metal and fiber cement lap boards. But the aesthetics of your front facade with the cedar is something that is manageable and slightly protected with that nice overhang! I build all my properties with the largest overhang possible. Like an umbrella that will protect the building for decades.
Agreed on the overhangs, nice protection from the sun as well in summer when it's high in the sky. As for the cedar at today's prices it wouldn't be my choice, nice though it is.

Thanks for the insights - I am building my workshop backwards! Started with an electricity supply, Ethernet and phone connection to the end of the garden.
Have sorted out a retaining wall. Now beginning to think about an extended concrete slab and the workshop on top.

Awesome work! I built my shed roughly around the time you were documenting it on RUclips, I went for Cedar shingles (wanted cedar but money was an issue) so I went for a combination of shiplap on the side I would never look at. And western red shingles facing my house. I like the look of it (even though I still haven't finished the house). If you would like where I bought those and some photos of my humble shed / excess house stuff dump I'd happily send them to an email address?

I hope you don't mind me asking, but where did you get your cedar cladding from please? I'm currently looking at Siberian Larch, however I'm seeing you have two different size corner covers there, for the outside corners and the window corners, which I am struggling to find at the moment. Random, but I used a load of pine doors and a liberal coating of Ronseal. Need to revisit it this year as I want to fill some of the holes, but it worked better than expected. Cheap, too!
Sounds like a good cost saving. I'm thinking pallet wood for the inside of my next one.
Also a good shout. Framing and OSB provides structure and sheer strength, everything else is merely decoration.

In the planning permission video you were told by building regulation to avoid wood cladding to get class zero fire rating. How were you able to use wood for the front of the garden room? Thanks
Firstly, thank you for going to so much trouble to detail your build. It really is the best guide and source of hints and tips I have found on the internet.
I'm interested to know where you got your rear metal cladding from, and whether you need the batons when fitting it to your membrane covered SIP panels?
Cladco are a good supplier. You don't *need* battens no.

Hi Ali , maybe I missed it but did you use the OSMO 420 Clear Satin for your Cedar cladding which looks impressive .

Hi Ali, Great videos. I have a question. I am building a garden workshop similar style to yours. Frame is done and I am looking at composite cladding for outside and T&G timber on inside of the 4x2 frame. What I am not clear about and hope you can clarify for me is - If using composite cladding, do I need to cover the frame with OSB sheets first? Some seem to say yes and others say no just put cladding straight on. Also, what is the difference between the Tyvek you put on outside and the polythene you put inside? Are both needed? I'm so confused and would appreciate your guidance. Cheers Si

I am this stage now Ali and Cedar is £100 to £160 per sqm ex vat!!!
I was quoted 2grand for western red cedar, 1400 for siberian larch and 500 for Scottish larch. Crazy prices for 23m2. I'll enjoy watching this video to make a decision 🤓

When this video shows the cladding web page, it shows Cost / Durability & Maintenance for each cladding material. Yet when I visit the page, this is not visible !!! Can you please help?

I've got to the cladding stage after following your amazing tutorials! I've decided to go for the British Cedar but wanted your thoughts on the following: is it better to treat the cedar before I hang it up? I am looking at the Osmo uv oil but as the weather is a bit hit and miss now wanted to treat the cedar before taking it outside or do I hang it risking it greying until weather picks up and then treating it?

It is better and technically best if you can do all sides rather than just the front. That's a lot of work though so I just oiled once attached.
Did you move out before you finished your build?
Brilliant - this is the one I was waiting for ! Many thanks Ali ! One cladding option you haven't mentioned is to use Eternit Profile 3 or 6 fibre cement sheets, commonly used on agricultural buildings, but also starting to crop up domestically. If I end up using some of this on mine, I'll send you some pics !
Ah yes, thanks for mentioning! Forgot this one, I'll add it. Looks good in black on barns as you say. I'm praying this is the stuff on top of my old shed and not asbestos!
Thanks Geoff, that is what I was just beginning to look at for a cheaper option around the non visible back or sides of the garden office if within 1m of a boundary (0 rating). I'll look at them.
@@madmickmcmart2638 Fibre cement sheets are also supposed to be good for helping with the insulation and the sound proofing ... which is two advantages over metal at a similar price point. Also probably got to be more careful with the electrics if cladding with metal !
Thanks Ali, I’m underway with my garden room but haven’t finalised the cladding. My design is an irregular pentagon shape, whereas 3 of the corners are 90 degrees, the other two are 45 internal / 135 external.
A lot of the off the shelf cladding choices only offer 90 degree external trims. Are there any good choices for 135 external joins?
Good question. Had someone else email me that he had a problem with roof trims too as the angles are usually 90 degrees. As for cladding though, I believe there are some for composite and some timber cladding suppliers will do 135 degree corners but they're rarer. If however you go with something like metal sheeting, you can bend the corner barge boards to the shape you like. Defo have a good look around. Your corners don't necessarily have to match your cladding, they can sort of stand out like trimming
Quoted £1200+VAT for 40m2 of larch from Silva timber, which seems ok. But then another £1100+VAT for pre-coating with UV protection! Most of the cost is the oil itself (2x19 litres at £435+VAT a tin!). Then on top of that the advice is to recoat every 5 years. So question is: is it really a problem to leave it unprotected? Isn't the whole point of choosing these timbers that they are durable?

Probably out of date somewhat now but probably in the region of £18-£20k but you can build for much cheaper that this with a few changes

Cedar is like gold ..I can get upvc cheap but will it look to plastic 🤔
It's ridiculous now and too much to be worth it in my opinion. I like the featheredge or weatherboard pine/spruce stuff stained to your desired colour. Cheap but looks the works - esp in black but it's all a matter of taste.

Sure, look for 'barge boards'. All metal sheet suppliers will have them. usually 15 or 20cm each side of the corner.
