Steely Dan does one of these per album. They take what they think is gonna be popular soon and go “oh you want some of that? Here’s our take on it” in this case disco, early on they did straight ahead rock tunes ala doobie brothers, eagles etc, they’ve done Dylan like tunes like barrytown or Brooklyn, of course they do jazz, country tunes like with a gun, they like to throw in their take on pop music every once in a while to show everyone they can do that too if they wanted
The vocals were a bit back in the mix, I think they wanted to highlight the funky vibe. I think that’s Bernard on drums. A fez in this song refers to a condom. To answer your question about Walter’s guitar, here is what I found: Becker's main guitar is his signature Walter Becker model Sadowsky. It features custom Lollar P-90 pickups, spalted maple top and swamp ash body. In the neck/middle and middle/bridge settings, the pickups are wired for humcancelling output. ✌️
oh wow. never heard of Zadowsky man i was way off. i figured he had to have a signature series though thank you for that info yeah i cant rag on them to much for the vocal mix. hell i enjoy when bands get creative in the studio, it just sit well with me. over all this song had such a funky groove a condom...ok now i need to concentrate on the lyrics
Drums: Bernard Purdie Bass: Chuck Rainey Guitar: Elliott Randall Guitar: Walter Becker Piano: Paul Griffin Organ: Paul Griffin Fender Rhodes: Don Grolnick Synthesizer: Donald Fagen Trumpet: Chuck Findley, Bob Findley Trombone: Slyde Hyde Sax: Plas Johnson, Ernie Watts Backing Vocals: Donald Fagen, Timothy B. Schmit, Michael McDonald Percussion: Victor Feldman (maracas)
I agree with the comment on the vocals. It was obviousle mixed that way. Steely Dan does everything intentionally. This song "could" have easily been an instrumental track. Please correct me if I am wrong.... I don't believe SD every made an instrumental cut on an album. The lyrics are somewhat repetitive as well but I still really like this track and I am by no means putting it down. SD has been my favorite music for decades now. Their sound never gets old.
Walter Becker has signature Sadowsky model w Lollar P90s.

Those credits are for the whole album not just this song.
Becker used a Strat!
I’ve heard Donald Fagen isn’t a fan of this song so you’re not alone. He won’t even sing it live. Instead he lets the female backup singers sing it.

"East St. Louis Toodle Oo" is an instrumental cover of a Duke Ellington tune. It's on the Pretzel Logic album.
The fez is el condom....in case you did not know
