😒 At this time in history, EVERYONE was wearing a FEZ so we didn't die. 😔 It was a terrible time in NYC especially for the Broadway & Entertainment Industry. 🙏🏿 We lost a ton of Talent in a short time. 😳 Now they got commercials for HIV Meds, like they do for everything else. 🤯 Nope, we wasn't doing it without the FEZ on. 🥰🐰

I'm a 69 year old old man with liver cancer, I've seen the Dan at least 4 times great band probably my favorite , seen Zappa a few times also ,big fan also . I've had stuff in my life happen also, my son pass away in 2000 he was 19 . Had a head injury riding his skate board , he was 16 ,and had every negative thing that could happen with a head injury . Anyway now I have cancer ,terminal they tell me. I did the drug thing also . But I stopped cold turkey in 96 . All that stuff is cured with a good lady ,that's how I got through. Keep rocking, I really enjoy watching your reactions, I watch some of these other guys have no idea what they're listening to , genius yes ,youl be alright !

I love every Dan song from their classic period, 1972 to 1980, when I was 12 to 20 years old. 60+ songs and they are all great.

You're now never going to get this song out of your head. 😄 It's really just a blues (which more SD songs are than you realize), but it just goes to show what can be done with that form. Such a short lyric but one of the best of 1976.

I just subscribed. I grew up with a lot of the music you react to. Steely Dan is a "band" I grew up with along with many other classic rock artists. The 70's is arguably the best decade for music of all genres. If you're considering doing another reaction to Steely Dan, may I request/suggest "Cousin Dupree" from the "Two Against Nature" album. after you finish reactions to your "Royal Scam" album of course. Donald Fagen's solo works are also phenomenal, very much Steely Dan like. Finally, I would like to take a moment to offer my condolences and wish the very best to you and your family. Thanks for opening your mind and soul to new music, specially the music of my youth. (I was a teen in the 70's). Music has way of keeping things in life going....

Ask your grandfather to tell you about his grandparents and aunts/uncles/cousins and parents and siblings and about his favorite memories from childhood and school and the military and record him, if he's cool with it. Share it with your daughter at the appropriate time. ❤

Lyrically sparse for a Steely Dan tune, but what a groove!
It almost has hints of world lounge music, and feels like a precursor to the Steely Dan song Glamour Profession off the Gaucho album.
Yeah, that organ and synth melody on top is just otherworldly!
This is probably my favorite Walter Becker guitar solo on all of Steely Dan albums, except for possibly Home at Last from Aja.

Their lyrics are not to be taken literally. It's more like they are creating a poetic gestalt that different people bring different feeling states and thoughts to. This is perhaps the best example, since they boil the lyrics down to just a few words. This is also perhaps the best use of (otherwise mind-numbing) Disco rhythms and cliches ever done. I love that you have found and are doing reactions to Zappa and the Dan at the same time - my two most favorite musical, artistic, pioneering composers of an archeological persuasion. Zappa also had a similar way of using lyrics. I rate the Dan as superior lyrically; Zappa the greater innovater in pure music. But fuck it, they were both great in both areas.
Dude, so sorry I posted my comment b4 your comments about your grandad. It's a hard loss; lost my dad 3 years ago. I never even met my grandad, he was long gone b4 I was born. So, there's that. It will get better but honestly you never get over it completely.

From when Steely Dan were still an actual band, the album 'Countdown to Ecstacy', the songs 'Bodhisattva' and 'My Old School'. Nothin not to like about Steely Dan.
THe MEANING of , which you will NEVER find anywhere else . Their masterfully satirical side you are new to and boy is this is one satirical hit piece !!! Which they might have died for saying overtly , so they say it cryptically. Think of their ethnicity and "religion" and you will see .
The strict Hasidic Jews have strict rules for certain Rabbis . A strict Rabbi cannot touch or be touched by a woman , even their wife !! So in order to have sex with their wife they could get around the prohibition with a bedsheet that has a strategically situated "hole" in it .(usually embroidered spectacularly with shamrocks and such) Hence the lyrics " I want to be a holy man" . If you go through a Hasidic neighbourhood in Brooklyn or Tel Aviv on wash day when these holey bedsheets are all seen hung on clotheslines . So both Walter and Donald had a scathing view of this whole "religious mockery" and said it cryptically . Now you SEE.

I've always taken it to mean that the narrator (too dignified for such a brief tale?) wouldn't have sex without his fez. Been riding tricycles in the streets, strategizing charitable functions/operations, maybe coordinating with locals, either gov't. or NGOs, why would he remove it for that? He wouldn't. He won't.
