The studio version of My Old School is the reason I became a SD fan. When it came out on the radio, I had never heard anything like it. //////Before then, I never realized songs were made by individuals playing instruments. (I was a jock) I bought the album and became a huge music fan and it turned me on to jazz and my life was transformed. I was a senior in High School when this came out.

Jeff Baxter is normally a monster but his Reelin solo is pretty lackluster compared to Elliot Randall. Jimmy Page said that Randall's solo was one of his all time favorites. It's kind of close in feeling to Page's Song Remains the Same workout.

It's great to still be alive! After the first 2 albums, I was all into SD, they were special, a real cut above the schlock in 1973.
Now imagine your high school friend being hired by SD to play drums and tour with them in 1974. And play on 2 songs from Pretzel Logic and of course, Katy Lied, the Nightfly, Gaucho.
My friend was Jeff Porcaro, and it really was a great time to be alive, fifty years ago.

The first big hits, and a rare view of what SD were like as a live band. Donald is nervous as f*ck! 😄 Walter Becker is playing bass here. The guitarist in glasses is Jeff "Skunk" Baxter, veteran LA session player who was part of SD until they retired from live work. He then went on to join The Doobie Brothers for their run of mid-late 70's albums. IMO this beats the studio version, despite the 'made for TV' sound mix (early 70's TV sound technology was nothing like it is today!). The energy of "My Old School" kicks butt over the studio version, so it's great that you got to see this. There's a bootleg of early SD live from London that sounds about the same as this.

L33: One might think that the Steely Dan players would travel in a whole different circle than the prog guys or the classic rockers, but as if to prove Louis Armstrong's adage that there's only two kinds of music - good music and bad music, it won't surprise you to know that on the 90s a tour of Japan was done by a band called The Best. The following were the band members: Jeff "Skunk" Baxter (Steely Dan, Doobie Brothers), Keith Emerson, Joe Walsh (James Gang, Barnstorm, solo), John Entwhistle (The Who) and Simon Phillips (Jeff Beck, Toto, Pete Townsend, The Who, Derek Sherinian) on drums. So yes - we DID have it good. Great fun to see them back in their early days as well as how much fun you're having. We had the shows and records, but you have RUclips and a soul to appreciate it!

  • @richkurl

My Old School was the 6th track on Countdown to Ecstasy, their 16th track overall including Can't Buy a Thrill. Although you don't see it on the Midnight Special live performance, it was their first track with a full R&B horn section. Yes, you have to listen to the studio version of both songs. That same attention to precision & detail shines through on their early work.
BTW, you absolutely have to catch their modern 13-piece live band when they come around, including one of THE best drummers you'll ever see & hear, Keith Carlock.

The guitar solo on the original recorded version, by session player Elliott Randall, was recorded in one take. It has reportedly been rated by Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page as his favorite solo of all time. I know this because we all worked with Elliott many times in NYC(he never wanted to be in a band despite offers from the Dan,Doobie Bros,Blues Bros and any more.
He is now based here in the Uk and l am pleased to say that Els is a friend of mine. He still uses the same modified Strat that he played on this track all those years ago..and he is a lovely guy.

My teenage years were throughout the 1970s and it WAS a great time to be alive, especially living in the Bay Area with any artist you could ever want to see just a 30 minute drive away in San Francisco, with Berkeley and Oakland even closer. I enjoy your videos because I find your perspectives on the music interesting. Your willingness to explore the “old stuff” is fun for me to experience along with you. You may not like something I’ve loved for decades but I feel you’re very fair. And lastly I have Mad Respect for you being so upfront about your sobriety. In fact along with today being my 66th birthday I’m also celebrating 2 weeks today of quitting smoking. Just by a casual mention of your sobriety reminds me that HEY…I totally can do this, cuz look at Lee haha! Sometimes support can come in a random way, out of the blue. So thanks!❤☺️

Steely Dan was a band that didn't tour very much, so I didn't get to see them until 2000, at the Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Md.. They played both of these songs, of course, with "My Old School" being the encore song. Just as they started to play "My Old School" it started to POUR, in a major way. We all exited about halfway through the song. BTW, the band Steely Dan is named after a sex toy.

My parents made me tag along with my sister when she went to her boyfriends house. As if I would intercede.
One night they wanted a bit of time alone so, Brent, her boyfriend, slapped on Countdown on the console in the living room. I even learned how to flip it. I played it about four times.

You are absolutely right, what a time to be alive, livin in the 70s. From 12 to 21 I was truly blessed with the music, the vibe, the good people, the trancendant philosophy that reached over from the 60's hippy era. Nothing like it since. But there's some good news, it was just a taste, an entree to what's coming for the whole planet in this century, but exponentially better. You might get to see it, but not before a lot of trouble.
The kids of the 70s were visionaries. The 80's was the beginning of the Darkness before the Dawn!!❤🙏

Fk'n awesome! That was a great performance, they are not known for liking to perform live. Great energy and outlook notwithstanding the political climate, probably in spite of it. Thanks LEE and picker!

That was so fun. And boy I was a little kid in the early seventies and I sure do miss halter tops, laugh. Sexy as hell.
Yeah man, you would totally dig the studio cut for both of these, it's got great clarity even for that early era. You can hear the bass and drums quite well although I didn't have any problem picking up the bass on this one for some reason, maybe my ears are just used to that kind of live mix from back then. But the studio cut also allows you to focus more on the lyrics, which are also really cool in both of these songs.

Blonde guy with glasses is Jeff "Skunk" Baxter." He was also the lead guitarist for The Doobie Brothers. Guy is a special sort of guitarist. He was also a studio session guitarist for other artists records.

Got a chance to catch Skunk at the legendary (and tiny) Troubadour club in LA (ok, it might actually be West Hollywood) last year with his band while playing mostly his solo album stuff. I was not familiar with his solo album but it was good. Later in the show he threw in a few Steely Dan and Doobie Brothers tunes. He's such an incredible guitar player and yes, he still has his signature mustache.

Steely Dan quit performing live early in their career. Donald and Walter essentially broke up the band and became a studio oriented duo who hired session musicians from album to album. Thats why there is so little live stuff of theirs to check out when they were young. Finish off Can’t Buy a Thrill and go straight to Countdown to Ecstasy.

I would be remiss if I didn't give kudos to Elliott Randall who played the guitar solo on the studio version, cited in many surveys as the best rock guitar solo ever. It has been reported that it's Jimmy Page's favorite.

One of the reasons you can't hear the bass and drums very well is because it's 70s television.

I really wish I could impress upon reviewers the importance of first experiencing the source material before venturing into the live interpretations. Particularly when it comes to Steely Dan. They are first and foremost a studio creation.

This looks like fun! I always regretted not making it to a Steely concert. What was I thinking? Somebody SLAP me!
I watched Midnight Special and Don Kirshner's Rock Concert on late night TV in the mid-1970s many times, but don't recall ever seeing them live on the boob-tube.
I had a little black& white 13" television in my bedroom and hard-wired some headphones and a little toggle switch to it so I could select the 'phones or the TV's little speaker so I could listen to it loud at late night without waking anyone when it came on. They didn't call it MIDNIGHT special for nothing. ;-)

Great reaction to two Steely Dan classic tunes. 'My Old School' is one of my faves from the Dan. Jeff "Skunk" Baxter had glasses. My favorite LP by the band is Dr. Wu. Their canon, to me, is the first 5 Albums, all killer no filler.
    Good luck.
