Most are just for show, as evidenced by the cheap and flimsy way they're sewn on. I wouldn't actually try to attach anything to them or it would just rip it off the bag!
I can't get over the fact that all of that time was spent to properly set up the bag and photograph it, and nobody took three seconds to snip off that piece of thread with a scissors.
Although string can go through it, notice the holes are not round. They are flat. They were designed for strips of material or straps to go through. You can still buy these straps individually wrapped in most camping departments. Saying these are 4 shoe strings is kind of like saying all horses were designed for the carriage.
Lol! These lash tabs have been on many styles & types of back packs ever since I can remember, clear back to the early 1970’s. It depends where on the pack they are sewn that determines their usefulness.
Only problem is that most backpack manufacturers don't know what it's for anymore and it's stuck on with glue so that you can't thread anything through it.
It's not just vintage. If you look at any military backpack or piece of kit that has come out in the last 10 to 15 years, you will see attachment points like this which are often called Molle and are used to attach bags, equipment pouches pretty much anything to a larger pack and can be quite useful. That they don't just have the Vintage appeal now, they have a lot of real-world applications. Interesting to hear the origin though.
Not totally correct. The patch was originally used in conjunction with a, usually nylon, loop attached near the bottom of the pack to secure an ice ax to the pack. The ax was dropped into the loop, pointed end first and then brought back up to the patch and secured by a small , usually nylon, strap fed through the slots in the patch and secured by a snap.
the Hershel back pack example has missed two stitches on the leather patch. cheap just like their products. very popular now but made by slave labor. On a real back pack the patch would be off to one side so that the ice axe point would not be pointed at the climbers neck. I made back packs under a major brand and when i made one with two patches it was copied by eastpak and they still make the style. that was in 1979 !! I'm responsible for the messenger bag craze. guess who. I was also the first designer to use plastic hardware on bags which is now industry standard.
It was orginil put on mountaineering packs to facilitate fastening on an ice axe to your pack. Nonmountaineering didn't have it in the day. But lemmings will do what lemmings do.
Yes, to attach things, but it was originally used to attach an ice axe and alpinists and ice climbers continue to use a similar set up to stow their axe(s) on the approach hike. i.ytimg.com/vi/vsMAowlkQcs/maxresdefault.jpg
Basically it’s big enough to hold a small shank so when you go school you can just quickly reach for your back and pull the knife out in times of emergencies when your classmates need their sandwiches cut. What you think I was gonna say something else?
Oh, so it's used for exactly the same purpose that everyone thought it was, which is surprising, since it looks like it was meant for that purpose in particular.
I had a friend who used to love to collect cell phone straps, but she had too many to put on her phone so she would tie them onto the pig snout of her bag :)
I always thought it was a brand logo design

It was originally used to lash an ice axe for mountaineering.
Yep
Correct answer, used in conjunction with a loop at the bottom of the pack!

What a wonderful idea! I can finally hang my shoes when going out and not wear them on my feet.
That's some quality stitch work, right there.
This bugged me so bad in highschool I needed to know. Now I don't care and I am gonna know anyways.
Thanks for uploading this video 😊

You could also use it to carry chargers, earbuds etc.

Only problem is that most backpack manufacturers don't know what it's for anymore and it's stuck on with glue so that you can't thread anything through it.
lol i thought you put pencils in there or pens
What would be the purpose of putting pens in that?
Same!!
That actually very close to it's real purpose, instead of a knife a pen
for those who aren't able to see it says that it was pretty much used to hold stuff (from what I understand

Finally a video that answers the question of the title without a bunch of random irrelevant bullshit first
instead, it does that after answering the question
I have never seen that on any backpack in my entire life.

Can you tell us more information about yourself (maybe more than a username) and your works
lastword ooooo, nobody gives a shit
lastword I can guarantee you that you are not even close to the reason why we have this stuff today.
Originally used on the bottom of packs to attach sleeping bags or pads. Most packs have 4 . Molle has made this obsolete.
Its perfect for attaching bike lights if you're cycling in the city at night
You know what this means folks?
Time to glamour up my school bag with cellphone charms!
AWWW HELL YEAHHHH
I can finally sleep at night...
Shoes? Who’d a thunk
That bright blue back pack looks really vintage.....like 80'sish
Thanks now I can sleep in peace
Omfg thanks so much, how easy it was to find this I literally just googled "backpack thing" and this was the first video that came up!
Thank you. I always wondered what they were for. I have never tried using them for anything.
I thought it was a phone plug first
I put an Oscar award keychain on mine
Originally used to attach an ice axe for assending the mountain base before it was needed..

when i was about 5 years old i thought it was an outlet
Every backpack I had had it in it
It's for attaching a small LED rear bicycle light.
just wait till the other kiddos see what I can do with my backpack!
I use it everytime just to carry a bag of headphones in the back or any other bags in there
I think more bags should have a laser-cut MOLLE panel instead of having this patch.
Me and my friends would always joke about it being a portable plug
Basically it’s big enough to hold a small shank so when you go school you can just quickly reach for your back and pull the knife out in times of emergencies when your classmates need their sandwiches cut. What you think I was gonna say something else?
I thought it was a holder for headphones and I tried it and it worked pretty well! Btw hope you are having a amazing day/night! 💎🙌🌈
Oh, so it's used for exactly the same purpose that everyone thought it was, which is surprising, since it looks like it was meant for that purpose in particular.
I've asked about 20 people over the past 5 years. None of them knew.
There’s a kid at my school that’s actually been using it to hold his shoes, and this was way before this video came out
Someone in my old school uses it as a hanger for her lock
i've heard its sometimes used for hauling heavy stuff
we used to wrap the cords of our earphones around those and by the end of the school year they would always be so worn out
That bag is nice 0:47
I want two like Marty McFly! Otherwise it’s not my preferred feature on a backpack.
Was looking for documentary’s for terrosim but here we are
I always used it for storing bobby pins...
Dat_Whovian smart.
I used to put a ribbon through it for a design
I had a friend who used to love to collect cell phone straps, but she had too many to put on her phone so she would tie them onto the pig snout of her bag :)
Always though it was for your padlock for when you didn't need to use it
Baloney. They are there along with a loop at the bottom of the pack for an ice ax. People have found other uses for it as you show.
*Bologna
So it’s literally exactly what it looks like…
I always thought my bagpack was alive! Good bye pal, I'll remember you.
I have one og these backpacks. It was maybe around 5 dollars. It is waterproof and it has a shoe holder.
