damn, never realized the Giants went that long without a home playoff game. No playoffs from 1964-1980. You hear about the great Giants teams before the Super Bowl era but nothing until the mid 80s.
They have had some great games. And some wipeouts. I was happy about the 86 game and the 93 games was not has painful as normal because I was skiing in Colorado and just ended lunch early and went outside for more skiing.
@@tomstreet2859 well I stand corrected, haven't watched rocky in yrs. 80s rock was what country music is now very generic with slogans, though rocky 4 had one of the better ones
Back then they would constantly play Vincent DiCola's War from Rocky IV (to represent the 49ers) due to the fact that they always appeared machine like (or showing a lack of comfort in personality), as the Russian antagonist "Ivan Drago" from Rocky IV (and it was a very harsh description).
Great intro! CBS was and always will be the best ever. Pat and John were the best and the games were made even better by it all. I have this game on VHS tape. But thanks for the memories. Go Giants! George Vreeland Hill
as a die hard cowboy fan watching these videos, i remember these vividly growing up in Jersey, dallas was 5-2 vs NY 85-87, but the giants were younger and stronger
FUCK YES! VINCENT DICOLA'S WAR! -Giants vs Niners defined football back then. You always knew somebody was gonna crack and start a fight on the field 80% of the time during these games. There was so much raw tension and physicality between these two teams. -And this crossed over into the 90's, and 00's. GOOD TIMES!
CBS always had the best intros. Pat and John were also the best people to ever cover games. I miss them being together and those intros that were put together with music. Nothing like it. George Vreeland Hill
The music used in those games was actually the theme for CBS Sports Saturday/Sunday (simply put, somewhat like CBS' answer to ABC's iconic Wide World of Sports).
I really hope TC can fix the turnovers and help our boys hold on to that ball. Had we not made half of our turnovers, we'd be playing this weekend. I really like Manningham's progression. People rave about Nicks.. but I secretly cringe with joy when I see Mario go off. They could be dual Mike Irvin-like threats. I love the Giant's Offense right now. I think it's perfect. We can deinitely use some O LINE backup. Let's get some fresh LBers, I like our secondary, and give JPP many more snaps !!
The old Giants stadium was such a dump, but dammit I miss it. That horrible turf, the howling winds, the run down building, and the dinginess of that stadium are classic! Just looking at that field brings back GREAT memories of my childhood, and the very successful Giants of the 80's. For whatever reason, just seemed like the crowd was louder back then, in that stadium, but maybe it's because we weren't spoiled with 4 SB championships at that time. Fuck it,I'm buying a copy of this game
@leafeonon AFC Wild Card gane was played the day before as the Jets had the honor of hosting as they hosted the Patriots. The Patriots won 26-14 in the 1st of 3 striaght road games they won to reach Super Bowl XX
@drwood04 It took Simms 5 years to completely take the starter role away from Scott Brunner. Even Parcells to this day says the Brunner was a better QB talent wise, just wasn't consistant enough.
In This Clip, From 2:12 To 2:55, It Was CBS Sports' NFL On CBS: San Francisco 49ers Vs. New York Giants Video Open From Sunday Afternoon, December 29, 1985.
@drwood04 I'm not so sure. The only real threat at WR I could think of that the Giants ahd in the early 80's was Earnest Gray. Tom Mullady was a decent player at tight end, and Mike Freddie jumped to the USFL after one year. I've always been curious at how good of a player Doug Kotar would have been had he not died young of cancer.
dude- this was such a great victory- and have you noticed there are scant few Giant games on RUclips, but lots of SF? I ask you- it's not too hard- post the whole game, bro! all the best
Actually, Mark Bravaro would have been a better choice. The Broncos were 24th in the NFL in pass defense that year, and made their mark with Elway's arm and a strong running game more then anything else. Bravaro was one of the better performers for the Giants that day, and even die hard Giants fans I know felt that Bravaro, not Sims, should have been the MVP.
I'm confused about the music used. It appears this intro style and this music had been used since 1981, but in both clips of Super Bowl XVI and the 1982 NFC Championship Game, they had a completely different intro and completely different music, kind of like a synthesized family sitcom establishing music kind of thing? I assumed the latter was their "playoff music" but this seems to say otherwise. What music did they use?
@quietriotfan1976 No he doesn't, at least not on the NFL Network "America's Game" documentary about this season. He acknowledged that starting Brunner over Simms was a huge mistake in that doc. And, for what it's worth, Simms was injured for a big chunk of '81 and all of '82. Brunner never earned the starting job, Simms couldn't play. And Joe Pisarcik was the quarterback in Simms' first year in 1979. Brunner didn't join the Giants until 1980 and was cut after '83 -- wasn't there five years.
I'm from Charlotte, so that very brief snipet of the WBTV promo caught my attention right off. I'm racking my brain trying to figure out who that is at the weather map. Of course, the CBS intro from back in the day is always a welcome sight. Love whistling to the music.
That would have been the divisional playoffs the next year when they beat them 49-3. It was also the game where the name West Coast Offense was given to SF. Parcells used it as a pejorative. "How do you like that West Coast Offense now?"
CBS had the best intros.
Nothing like it and nothing like Pat and John.
I miss listening to Pat and John do big NFC games. Especially NFC East battles. They were the best.
CBS had the best intros ever.
Pat and John were also the best team of announcers ever.
Those were the glory days.

Amen to that.
I would say it would have to be them or Olsen and Enberg

I think that it was a legal obligation for every mid-80s football intro to have Rocky IV music. (Not that I'm complaining about it)

wasn't pat summerall a kicker on that giants 1963 team?
He retired after 1961
@pablocoon Plus, no Faith Hill (or Hank Williams Jr. for that matter) singing in the intro.
