My understanding is that this is am improv performance. It was not practiced, not rehearsed, she just gets the music and responds. If so, that is amazing, you can really see what elements she truly enjoys doing as opposed to those that are required to gain points. I was skating yesterday and had a piece of ice all to myself, and my Ipod. I decided to just have fun and skate with the music, I was mainly doing elements I am comfortable with, but a few times I added some of the new elements I am working on. At one point I noticed my husband, who often plays on his phone while I am practing elements, was staring at me, transfixed. Only I could hear the music, and I am not a great skater, but he told me later that it was mesmerizing to watch me skate and just enjoy myself, apparently he watched me for the whole half hour I was doing it. I was looking up improv today just wondering what a really good skater would like doing this, and she is also mesmerizing IMO. Those of you criticizing, go out and have a good skate, you will feel better :)
When I first saw that I didn't know whether that was planned, or whether it was just the most awesome recovery ever. I sat here and literally said out loud "holy shit!".
For your info, Lizzy Jones, this is an old video. Sasha has improved so much and her consistency has gotten so much better since she first started competing on the ice. She is now absolutely lovely to look at and a joy to watch.
My favorite! I love her ending. I think all performances should be able to have catchy tunes as this one and the stuff they do on SOI. The typical classical music is boring. For Olympics, Championships and such, every time we get the SAME music. It's too repetitive. Swan Lake, Romeo & Juliet, The Nutcracker.... Someone always performs to one of those. Change it up! It would be far more entertaining if they could skate to any song they want.
She was so great at 15, in 2000 with her short program, pioneering new techniques, designed her lovely dresses and skated to lovely classical music. But then, she had to go with what the masses like.
@Ifigureskate1 Yes, What people should do is to focus on the figure skater because she's the one performing. And the people who wear jeans are not usually the one performing on the ice. Anyway, Sasha performed fabulously in this video, and I think she really performed better as a showgirl on ice.
Im a Figure Skater, and I would like to point out that while the costume is important, its the choreography that is more important. in competitions you are graded for both but more for the choreography :) and when a skating wears " jeans " on the ice during a performance, they are usually the kind that only look like jeans and are really stretchy
I'm a figure skater as well and have also been coaching for a while. No one like Taytaythomp1 said that jeans are very difficult and not practical for skating, this is also an improv on ice show. It's very possible that since she did not know what song she was skating to until a few hours before that she simply didn't have access to an appropriate costume. Besides, for the jumps she's doing it really doesn't matter what she's wearing and her job isn't to act the song out exactly. It's to skate.
Her artistry is unmatched. Every move feels like art. Exquisite and elegant.

@Ifigureskate1 who cares about the costume she currently wears. I hope you will just stick to the discussion of Sasha's figure skating performance..
Beautiful skating horrible song.
