The program that inspired Queen Yuna to skate. Michelle is a legend. The magic of one queen births another queen.
I went along from Michelle to Yuna Kim. Her Performances at Vancouver remain the best ever - for me.
After Sochi, I had to turn away for a while. My heart can take only so much grief.
@@herbertotto4725 She was so so much better than that jumping bean Tara.
Zero gold medals.
Michelle Kwan has made one of the most beautiful programs you have seen in the Olympics, she is a skating legend
A artist is more greater than a jumper.
I never believed she was out skated nor missed the magic. She is the premier skater. Simply elegant and the best. Special. Thank you
She’s so amazing. Her movements weren’t harsh or rough, her spins and turns were extremely smooth! She was so talented!!
She was so talented? Why not anymore?
Emilija Popic her age.
@@xoxolove3697 Old father time catches with us all Emilia. U don't seem to have a problem in that area Emilia, U R beautiful if U don't mind me saying lol.😉😉😉
She was a full package skater. Mesmerizing!
I prefer skating in the 90’s over what is being done today in 2021, 2022. There was so much gracefulness then. I feel it’s gone
Is it just me who loves the sound that comes from her turns on the ice?
The most artistic skater of all time It was as if she and the ice just blended into a beautiful sculpture
Michelle’s elegance and poise was so superior and she reflected such joy when she skated. A true legend. ⛸️⛸️
The audacity of the judges to give this performance silver😂. This was, is and will always be a gold medal performance, the skate that inspired legends like Yuna Kim to pursue skating.
If this were judged in the COP she wouldve probably won too despite Tara having 7 triples. A) her transitions were better, B) Tara had so many underrotations (the 2nd triple loop, the 2nd Lutz and the triple salchow at the end of her combo) and C) generally most areas in the component Marks.
that was a silver medal performance. and she deserves the silver medal. the difference between michelle and tara is that michelle skates not to lose and tara skates to win.
Agree, but they both are flutzers and prerotate. Although lipinski is more apparent in slowmo. Tara is also stiff and child like choreography still at 15 then. Skating will always want a caucasian American winner.
@@minavamp2811 no. Michelle skated to skate... And if she skated to lose, she wouldn't be a 5 time world champion and 9 time national champion, so check your facts
@@skatergirl1247 you can win a gazillion world championships and us championships but if you can not win the olympics where it matters most said to me and to the world that michelle could not deliver where it matters most. she made it to 4 olympics and twice she was able to complete, and she failed both times to win.
I still think this program deserved gold. The skating is sooooo pure.
Not only did I love Michelle's skating and her pretty blue dress, she also helped me discover the music of William Alwyn..
Michelle Kwan skated Gold for me at this performance in 1998.
Back then, I wrote a long detailed argument after the judging. It did no good back then - except a few ardent Kwan fans agreed - and we grieved together.
I'm 74 years old now - I won't repeat the long arguments.
Michelle. If you see this - I still give you the Gold !
We will never forget !
I'd love to read the argument! Kwan was by far more elegant and mature than Lipinski, in this program and in every other. Nothing against Lipinski--props for her jumping ability!--but Lipinski was 15 here, and her skating was nowhere near as mature and Kwan's was when Kwan was 15 (see 1996 Nationals and Worlds). I don't care if Lipinski skated faster and had more difficult jumps.
Amen
that was a silver medal performance. and she deserves the silver medal. the difference between michelle and tara is that michelle skates not to lose and tara skates to win. she has another chance to redeem herself 4 years later, leading into freeskake and crumbled again under pressure allowing sarah hughes to come out from nowhere to win the gold. michelle couldn't deliver at a competition where it matters most is the olympics, period.
@@minavamp2811 true, there were many opportunities for here. referees gave her besr score and all wanted her to win. referees did owe her at all
Two judges were reduced to tears by this performance. As much as I loved Tara’s performances, Michelle was just magnificent.
Never understood why Michelle didn't win. This performance was breathtaking. Tara looked like a jumping flea -- darting all over the place.
What a beautiful performance just stunning
She was a magnificent champion!
22 years later, I'm still traumatized. If only she skated last.....
😢😢 Robbed
@@hazeleyees well.. still made 7 triples like Tara even without the combo. And artistically she’s waaaay ahead. For me, it’s the same Yuna/Adelina thing, but since both are Americans no one cared about that...
@@hazeleyees true.. Vancouver era was the pinnacle of figure skating. Yuna, Mao, Caro and many other beautiful skaters. there’re still some beautiful skaters like Karen Chen, Marin Honda and Satoko, they’re great artistically but this type of skating is not appreciated anymore 😭😭😭
@@hazeleyees Look at Nancy Kerrigan who had a triple-triple and skated before Oksana (who barely had any combination jumps) still won the gold. If Michelle skated the same fire as Nationals and skated last, she would’ve won Gold
@@hazeleyees Tara didn't really make a correct 3+3, so Michelle should be win.
The combination of the music and her artistry made me cry. So beautiful.
I remember being too young to stay up and watch this performance. My parents told me the next day that she won silver, and I started crying because she was the best and deserved gold.
I was studying abroad in Mexico and couldn't watch, my grandma recorded them for me to watch months later. I couldn't believe Michelle hadn't won, especially since she didn't fall. I don't think I ever got to watch the performances, my grandma later realized she had trouble working the VCR. Of course, we can watch them now on RUclips, though.
I remember being really sad that she didn't get gold either, I was 12, I didn't even know who Tara Lipinski was at the time. No one can match Michelles grace
Michelle Kwan is amazing skater!
Fluid, athletic, feminine, and emotional........ Solid Gold.
Michelle Kwan is amazing skate.
I remember watching this with my dad and we were both just in awe.
I remember my dance teacher stole some moves from her.
I remember watching it with my sister, both of us mesmerized
THE FACT THAT THIS WASN'T A GOLD MEDAL PERFORMANCE STILL ANGERS MY SOUL!
Beautiful! Stood the test of time!
One of my all time favorite routines. Perfection
She actually skated better at nationals than here, but by all accounts, Michelle’s was a gold medal performance even if she didn’t actually win the medal.
that was a silver medal performance. and she deserves the silver medal. the difference between michelle and tara is that michelle skates not to lose and tara skates to win.
@@minavamp2811 Michelle performance is still better than Tara's and she was robbed
@@minavamp2811 Tara was a kid's Olympics gold winner. Tara didn't really make a correct 3+3, her performance was like a kid. Michelle should win, Tara just lucky, that's why Tara retired when she was 15 .
@@minavamp2811 The difference between Michelle and Tara is that Michelle skates to win and Tara skates to lucky.
@@TT-ee4qp tara wasn't fluking. the year before the olympics she won us national and world championship by beating michelle. so by beating michelle at the olympics was far from fluking or being lucky. if you are going discuss fluking and being lucky then that title goes to sarah hughes and not tara lipinski. sarah skated her best just 1 time in her life in free skate at 2002 olympics that earns her the gold medal. this time who did sarah beats? non other than michelle kwan. michelle this time has even bigger chance to win the gold medal than she did in 1998. all she has to do is comes in 2nd place in free skate and she would win the gold medal. lol you guys make excuse for michelle saying that because michelle skated before tara in 1998 and therefore the judges leave room for tara to win. well this time in 2002 michelle skated after sarah. the judges leave room for michelle to win, and she couldn't deliver. the bottom line is michelle could not deliver when and where it matters most. she came in 3rd place in free skate and ended up with the bronze medal. talking about squandering opportunities not just once but twice. in the end michelle was not meant to be olympics champion no matter how hard she tries. it's her fate, and her destiny.
26 years later, I haven’t watched this in 26 years. We were bamboozled. The media said she was slow and we bought into this. This program was amazing. Would’ve won in 92,94,02 AND 06…
Like a princess! It was a wonderful performance!
I love Michelle, I love this program. She always created magic. So proud of her career. ❤
My favorite skater of all time
This program always feels like a mesmerizing journey

She was absolutely the best
So talented!
Her artistry is from her heart. She skates with such passion and calmness. 10 years of figure skating is a true testament to her talent. Thank you for showing the world this beautiful and intense sport through your incredible work. Skating was never the same since you retired. This was a gold performance. Unfortunately she was over by a second. The judges had to pick bones from an egg.
Angelica is my mother's name. Amazing.
That was breathtaking...gold worthy
QUEEN
Breathtaking
OMG Finallyyyyyy
Michelle's gold medal.
By far the true Olympic champion. Those judges were out of their minds. Should have been straight 6.0s on the artistic mark. Tara was childish and undeserving. Sure technically was not as strong but come on when did that ever stop judging in figure skating?
Since she didn't skate last, they could not give her straight 6.0s- they had to leave room in case Tara skated better.
Tara had no artistry, her performance just like a happy puppy.

This is an example of Karate Kid. Michelle (Johnny) and Tara (Daniel), Tara may have gotten the gold but Michelle has and always will be the better ice skater.
Sorry for Tara. So many years, so many people thought Tara didn't deserve to win. Tara had no artistry, her performance just like a Disney cartoon.
Tara would have been a fine juniors champion in 1998, NOT *women's* calibur skating at all. Completely turned me off to skating. Corruption and choosing "marketable" winners was obviously the name of the game. Funny thing, I bet MK would have been every bit as marketable as TL, who was too juvenile and kid like for the 18-34 demo to relate to. Still I strongly suspect this was a factor in the decision (as well as other outside reasons). The era of artistry died in Nagano.
One finds it rather hard to time the jumps to the music than incorporating some dance moves, fancy footworks and dazzling spirals that captures the eyes of the audience.
The last great female skater to come out of the USA
Have you seen Mariah Bell.....also fluid and emotional.
@@TheStarflight41 please you cannot be serious 💀
I really liked Karen Chen, she had some beautiful artistry and a gorgeous spiral similar to Michelle’s. Still not on Michelle’s level, but I enjoyed watching her skate. And I loved Gracie Gold! No one has been better than Michelle, though.
@@aliciascott4299 I believe Sasha Cohen was at her level at least in artistry. Only problem is she let her nerves get the best of her a lot.

It’s crazy that Michelle was 8 began serious training. Nowadays kids begin serious skating training at like 4 or 5
Shizuka Arakawa's Turandot (Turin 2006 FS)

And Tara should go to the kid's Olympics with her Disney Cartoon program.
The real winner.

Biden picks Michelle Kwan to be ambassador to Belize , a very wonderful choice
I was so sad that she didn't win the gold. Both her performance and Tara's were magnificent in their own ways. Tara's had more difficult technical content in terms of jumps. It would be interesting to see them scored under the current system. I think Tara would come out the victor, though Michelle would be stronger in certain program components.
Tara didn't really make a correct 3+3, she had a kid's body and weight so easier to jump. Tara couldn't stop to grow up, and everything changed.
She has balletic grace .
I really think the judges gave her silver on purpose because if she were to have won, Gold then she would've retired and that was it. We would've never saw her skating to the red violin, aranjuez, or all of her signature programs
Who's Goldstein?
Very interesting. It could be.
@susieangelo6410 i edited it. Lol. Judges did it on purpose so they can see her skate more.

Why is there no opening or closing ceremony. It's Monday
No olympic ceremony replay on this monday?

Mulan 1998.
The biggest robbery of all time.
And Yuna kim.....
As much as we all love Michelle, she didn’t win Gold. It’s ok to be happy that she won Silver. If the color of the medal doesn’t matter and the performance does let’s focus on that. Appreciating her performance is better than any medal in my opinion. Tara literally won the WC in 1997 so to discredit her is childish. She belonged and deserved her medal.
Jermanie Jones Tara was a flash-in-the-pan. Everybody knows that. How can one "retire" at 15??? I was thinking she might be better off doing what she's doing with that clown Johnny Weir, but that went south too because of a vulgar and malicious skit they did on a female skater. She must retire from that one too.
Tara won the medal and Michelle won the hearts. Jumps do not make a routine nor does it make you a graceful or artistic skater. Tara retired and I thought her family needed the money the endorsements would bring and they would not have to travel as much. Either way, thanks to the ladies who represented USA and made us proud.
i couldn't agree more. the difference between michelle and tara is that michelle skates not to lose and tara skates to win. she has another chance to redeem herself 4 years later, leading into freeskake and crumbled again under pressure allowing sarah hughes to come out from nowhere to win the gold. michelle couldn't deliver at a competition where it matters most is the olympics, period.
@@minavamp2811 I disagree. Michelle may not have won gold in the Olympics, but she is a true legend.
@@minavamp2811 Your Tara gave up 2002 Olympics, so she didn't deserve the Olympics gold 1998. The difference between Michelle and Tara is that Michelle skates to win and Tara skates to lucky.
Her and Yuna, both robbed.
the triple flip was the downfall for her in both Olympics. her triple flip here she landed shaky. had she landed perfectly she might have won the gold here. had she landed the triple flip perfectly in 2002 Olympics, she would have won the gold for sure.
She was robbed! She deserved it over Tara
If she had skated AFTER Tara she probably would have won.

But Tara didn't really make a correct 3+3. And Tara's performance just like a Disney cartoon, no artistry.
Michelle had triple triple combo since 1995 ~ 2005 ( not every time ), unfortunately Michelle got hurt ( her toes ) before the 1998 Olympics, so she couldn't make triple triple combo.
This is her gold medal performance that was robbed from her. If you ask me, she had two Olympic golds: 1998 and 2002, Tara Lipinski and Sarah Hughes robbed from her, two of the most overrated skaters of all time. A flash-in-the-pan. They retired after "getting" their golds fom Michelle. How can one retire at the age 15 and 16???
reminds me of another robbery that happened 6 years ago...
I couldn’t have said it better myself!!
she was robbed here but not really in 2002
JC Even if Michelle had skated perfectly like in '98, they would still give it to Sarah Hughes. And that robotic Russian girl was just ridiculous.
Sarah Hughes absolutely deserved her gold in 2002. Michelle fell on her triple flip and her Scheherazade program was extremely devoid of choreography compared to her previous programs, not to mention she only did a triple toe as her solo jump in the short.
Lovely, but her program was way easier than Lipinski's. No comparison in the difficulty.
Years of skating debate, Tara Lipinski “Rainbow” performance outshines Michelle Kwan. The difference was the 2 Triple combinations late in Taras Olympic GOLD performance! 😍
Tara just lucky, or she could win the Olympics gold again. Where was Tara 2002?Michelle's artistry and technique were better than Tara, we saw the truth now. Sorry for Tara. So many years, so many people thought Tara didn't deserve the Olympics gold.
Tara skated like a happy puppy running in the park....Michelle skated like an angel on ice.......That's why Tara skated under Michelle's shadow even she was overrated to win....(≧ω≦)/
Without a kid's body and weight, Tara had no triple triple combo. 🤣
Tara was not lucky! Always remember 6 of the 9 judges saw it in Tara’s body! And also tell yourself, Michelle NEVER won a gold medal! 😂 not even in 2002!
artisticly so elegant. but...technicly...mistake on the 1st combo triple loop double toe loop, very poor landing on the flip..no triple triple combo...even tara s jumps vere tiny it was not enough to beat tara
@Phi-Dung Nguyen Big lol
I've have seen skaters these days fall more than once and their artistry is touted and they can score decently. Back then countries sided with each other and all kinds of nonsense went on. But Michelle will always be the cream of the crop and no marks can take that away. She is legend. And that's why we are here watching.
What you said about Michelle's performance, also happened in Tara's. And Tara had a kid's body and weight so easier to jump, nothing more. Tara grew up , everything changed.
