This was a great video! My family sailed to the New World in 1635 from England and I've been researching the coins he might have had with him when he arrived. Good to know I can add crowns to my search along with the Spanish Reales.

I find videos on stacking really interesting but I love it when stackers reveal their inner collector!

That King George III half crown is an excellent looking coin. Price in 2015- F £20, VF £60, Ex F £250 and Unc/Bu £450/, but the coin is great whatever was paid for it. I have quite a few QV half crowns, a number of crowns, shillings, sixpences, three pences, but none as early as your 1817 half crown😕 Looking at your King George lll half crown has made me realise I should get a couple.....maybe even a few 'Silly Billy' half crowns as well🤔 Great video👍

Historical silver coins are great to stack and collect, I like the design of the old coins from the 18th to the early 20th century. The most silver I bought in the last 2 years was constitutional silver from different european countries and silver coins from the German Empire and some Thaler for my collection. Right now I try to make a collection with coins of every Prussian king from 1701 to 1918.

British Crowns and Half Crowns are my favorite world coin to collect. Stunning designs. One day I hope to own a 1847 Gothic Crown in a decent grade.

Old British coins look so much better than our current ones. But the new system is better and makes more sense. Why not combine them?

This is really weird. I wanted to "diversify" and ordered my first ever pre 1920 silver this afternoon and was only thinking an hour or so ago that it would be good if you done a video on this. Genuinely.
    Great vid, mate. 🇬🇧

Just got my first Half Crown from the beach in Norfolk, 1924. Unfortunately a little bit pitted but still good after a clean. (Citric acid, then baking soda to neutralize the acid). Been metal detecting a little bit since the lockdown.

I love half crowns. Of all my silver they are my favourites. I like the intricate designs, beauty and history. I started stacking some last year and also buy the odd "date" coin with a higher price.

I couldn't help but think of Game of Thrones when you mentioned the Mad King. On another note, FID DEF stands for "fidei defensor", or Defender of the Faith.

Hi BYB, nice coins. I can't help but ponder the hands they went through and what they paid for. They were worth more in comparitive terms too.
It's worth checking out what the words mean on coins, I think.

I think it depends on which coins you are collecting. From my observation, at least in the U.S., constitutional silver is a popular choice for stackers while Morgan and Peace dollars seem good for collectors (which I might be wrong).
Personally, I like to stack my "junk" silver when I can, but I don't mind collecting some old coins for my collection.

BYB, a most enjoyable IFF tonight. British /English coins are something I avidly collect. Half-crowns are a vast category all by themselves. Thank you for sharing some in your collection.
The reverse of the 1887 Jubilee Head more closely approximates V.R.I's grandfather's from 70 years earlier - the 'bullneck' George III of 1817 reverse.
Another added to my list of best IFFs.

I’m buying up .500 silver. Very few people are interested in them so they sell for only a bit over spot, but silver is silver and I think they’ll be big soon

    • @dataexpunged2827
      @dataexpunged2827 4 года назад +2

jack daniels individually you’re right but I’ve seen some .400 and .500 going for at or below spot and I’ve actually bought some for that (about £3.75 for for about 9 grams of silver content). If anyone charges a large premium for a low percentage silver coin with little collector value, I simply don’t buy. With the lower percentage silver, it’s amazing how literally anyone can get a small stack with pocket money in some cases. Obviously the low percentage isn’t usually a good buy but if you really want to buy silver it’s a good way to dodge the premiums on higher purity silver at the moment.
Edit: I also collect coins for numismatic value so any pre-1920 silver would probably go into my collection. Currently I only have one, a 1935 silver sixpence I found in a vintage change jar with some decimal halfpennies.

I bought a very worn Victorian 1880 half crown for about $27 from a dealer here in Manila. It is overpriced but these coins are rare to come by here in the Philippines. So I bought it. I use it to enjoy and is one my coins that I can fondle anytime for fun. Overpriced but fun I guess.

Interesting how the lettering also changed, from Queen of the British to IND IMP (empress of India). Also a mere 8 of those would have been equal to one gold sovereign!!!!

I wonder what our coinage would look like today if we hadn't gone decimal in 1971. Even if we hadn't changed, we probably would have had to have some kind of semi-decimalisation eventually. Perhaps with inflation the concept of the penny would have gone, and as a half-way house to decimalisation, we would have made the florin a unit of account rather than the shilling. Maybe our coinage today would be something like £2, £1, 5 florin coin (50p), 2 florin coin (20p), 1 florin coin (10p), 1/2 florin coin (5p), and a 1/4 florin coin (basically the old 6d). In such a system the crown and the half crown still probably wouldn't have survived. Or what if we'd abolished the pound and made the crown the main unit of account? What would our coins and banknotes look like? Perhaps these banknotes: 200 crowns (£50), 100 crowns (£25), 50 crowns (£12.50), 20 crowns (£5), and the coins: 10 crowns (£2.50), 5 crowns (£1.25), 2 crowns (50p), 1 crown (25p), half crown (12 1/2p), quarter crown (0.0625p). Although, if we'd done that in 1971, we would have needed a smaller unit of account, as half a crown was actually worth something then. In this system, we'd still have the half crown, but most likely it would look a bit like a current 10p piece, or maybe even a copper-plated steel coin like a current 2p piece.

Err, The florin was introduced in 1849 (first move to decimalisation) as one tenth of a pound, it proved unpopular as D.G. defender of the faith was omitted and the double florin was called the barmaids grief as it was too similar to the crown. decimalisation was shelved.
