@@ultrapail No, he wanted to bet on the Ryder Cup in 2012. Walters is on record saying he did not take that bet and at no time in their 5 year partnership did he (Walters) and Phil bet on Golf. They had a 50/50 partnership regarding winnings and losses. Walters has detailed accounting records for Tax purposes. Walters said on the record with Jimmy Roberts of Golf Channel that several other high stakes gamblers who had similar Partnerships with Phil dating back to 1995 never said Phil betted on Golf.
And lets be honest, so what if he bet on himself to win a Major or regular PGA event (or bet to lose). How did Phil's betting (assuming he did) impact what Tiger, Ernie Els, VJ, David Duval, David Toms, etc, or did on the golf course? Now had Phil bet on the US to lose the 2012 Ryder cup, that is another issue and is a comparison to baseball, football, etc or other team sports. That would be a legitimate reason for concern and is similar to Pete Rose. But again, Billy Walters stated that Phil wanted to bet $400k on the US to win the 2012 Ryder Cup, not lose it.

@@palermotrapani9067 Not only did he bet, and not only did his gambling debts likely predispose him to LIVs overtures, but he was involved in an insider trading/money laundering case where he avoided charges by giving the money back. Great golfer, but maybe not the best guy.

    • @palermotrapani9067

@@lbandito1 I agree he had tons of gambling debts, Phil has admitted as much. He was not charged by the SEC for insider trading. Billy Walters was who Phil Gambled with. All Billy Walters said was when he was charged, Phil could have testified to help BIlly's case but Phil's attorneys told him to just go silent and avoid it.
Phil obviously has a problem with gambling, that is 100% true.

Brandel, 2 things. 1. Are you saying that the killing of a journalist, having limited views on women and gay rights and the Yeman bombings with US military equipment makes the Saudi government more BAD than a Country that sells them equipment for large profits, keeps hundreds on people in Guantanamo Bay without charge and bombed a complete country to bits( Iran) for no valid reason.
    2. LIV players having a weak moral compass for moving for more money. The USA promotes capitalism, well thats what the Saudi's are embracing, they need to find ways to make money with their PIF just like US hedge funds buying many assets across the globe including English soccer teams. The Saudi's oil money was not stolen, they have too much money and don't know what to do with it. What they're doing is the American way.......ask other smaller countries.

First let me make clear that I'm not a bot nor am I paid by LIV GOLF. I wish I was. I'm a United States veteran. I disagree with you Brandel. For the following reasons that I believe you purposely omit from your argument. It's well reported that Phil talked to the PGA board more than a few times to change their direction to better compensate and give the golfers more say in the direction the PGA was heading. You know this. The PGA TOUR has been doing business with the Saudis for years prior to the opportunity that Phil took with them. Not only does the United States do business with the Saudis, many private and public companies in the United States have been doing business with them for decades. I can say with %100 accuracy that everyone that has ever or will ever make an investment in stocks is in some way investing with the Saudis. Your personal retirement Brandel is doing as well as it is to this very day because of Saudi investments. So get off your moral high horse about taking Saudi money. By the way is made primarily from oil sales that every American buys indirectly from the Saudis every single day. As far as Jamal Khashoggi. You have a selfish motivation outside of the regular person to be outraged at his murder. It outrages you moreso because he and you share a similar occupation. Having served in these Arab countries I have the benefit of having a different insight about the Khashoggi issue. Jamal Khashoggi haven choose to be a journalist in a country that does not have the same laws concerning freedom of speech that we have in the United States understood full well that as a natural citizen of Saudi Arabia, that the things he said and his dangerous reporting could very well lead him to the outcome that it well did. As much as you and I both agree that his murder is disgusting and abhorrent. Jamal Khashoggi made his own decisions to engage in wreck less speech and also having made that decision made another bad decision to leave the safety of the United States knowing the danger thereof to do so. It was not some big secret that the Saudis wanted to get their hands on this guy. In other words, as repugnant the murder of him was to all of us. He was a grown intelligent man and made his own bed. US reporters and citizens don't want to acknowledge that the 1st Amendment only protects you inside the United States. Perhaps you and every other US reporter over estimate your own value and importance. Think about that. You say that it disturbs your sense of morality for the Saudis to buy their way into the PGA. Tell me how do you think the Japanese felt about US companies buying Japanese manufacturing companies 50 years ago? This is all nothing more than capitalism pure and simple. If Al Jazeera bought the Golf Channel and offered Brandel Chamblee $200 million dollars to report the golf news for 6 years, I just wonder if you'd actually say no thanks?! And one more thing. 20 years from now history is going to say Phil Mickelson saved the PGA from their own stupidity and short sightedness and changed the world of golf for the better and there's absolutely nothing that Brandel Chamblee can do or say that will change that outcome. Have a nice Christmas and Happy New Year.
    Welcome to LIV PGA GOLF.

My only problem with Brandel is his stance on LIV and the Saudis. He's right up there with Ben Crenshaw with his knowledge of the game and it's history. What I'll never understand is why in the world would he give RBC a complete pass. The RBC sponsors two PGA Tour events and gets all the accolades for that. But the RBC was instrumental in bringing the Saudi Royal families own company Aramco (richest company in the world) to the stock market. And that came after the death of Jamal Khashoggi. Why doesn't himself and the PGA tour stop associating with The RBC. Not one person has ever brought that to light and it just seems so hypocritical.

As an individual, you’d have to be an incredibly authentic and undiluted individual to put yourself in that position…..which is extremely rare not only in television, but in life itself.

Brandel is talking against LIV because the Golf Channel is a rightsholder of the PGA tour. Pro golfers are independent contractors and have been playing all over the world for years. There are atrocities in every country, especially in the middle east. Players go to Dubai and are paid for appearance, they have similar rules and laws about religion, women and gays. As soon as the PGA tour found out that Greg Norman was the face of LIV the PGA went crazy. As long as the Pro player met the minimum tournament obligation, they should have been left alone. Each golfer makes his or her own decision on what is morally correct and Brandel should take that stance.

The PGA tour has always made it tough for the average tour player. If you don't make a cut, you don't get paid. That would be like a football player not getting in a game and not getting paid. That would never happen in the NFL, so why golf? I don't think LIV is the answer, but it has opened the conversation for better conditions for the players. I can't blame players wanting to secure their future, having contracts with secure money, and being able to spend more time with their family, like other professions. I just hope all these tours can find a way to work together. There is no reason why LIV players shouldn't get world rankings. They are some of the best players in the world. Like Nicklaus said when he played, I want to know I am playing someone at their best when I play them. Players want to know they are playing against the best when they win a major. Otherwise, they will always know in the back of their mind, they really didn't beat the best players. Not something you want to live with.

I think Brandel has a bit of narcissism himself. That being said, I’m on board with most of his thoughts in this interview. I would love to see Michelson removed from the HOF. He can be put in the HOF for Saudi Arabia along with Norman. How Michelson could have been so easily duped is beyond me. However as we see, greed is a strong influencer. IMHO golf is in big trouble. The game on a professional level has been so watered down, that large companies are stepping back from it. Viewership is tumbling and players on the PGA can’t trust who they have as Commissioner. Maybe I’m wrong but I think Brandel is incorrect saying that clean money will come in to replace PIF money. Is there really any such thing as “clean money”? I certainly don’t have the answer but as it stands now, it looks like a slow death for the PGA. Thanks Phil. Thanks Greg. Thanks to the greedy players who turned their backs on the PGA to join LIV. You’ve hurt the game immensely but hey you can buy your kids new Porsche’s. Don’t worry about the young college players aspiring to be on the PGA tour. You can use the money more than them. Right?

Who is a great Saudi sports icon or hero? I wouldn't have a clue. Laurence of Arabia was English. If you have no sports heroes, why not just buy some. The Saudi PIF could buy the NFL 3x over. Would you care if Jerry Jones sold them the Cowboys? No, but I'd be mad as hell if they bought the Raidhas.
