Agreed. But it went up against Pirates of the Caribbean (winner), Superman Returns, Poseidon. I think it was better than Poseidon from a VFX standpoint because of the use of high speed moving frames, moving subject, and CG location. The issue is that Poseidon only got its nomination because it was produced by Wolfgang Petersen
. The Academy is complete trash and has no bearing on anything and should be ignored completely. Bunch of alleged Kid F'ers.

I think that for anyone who has some basic Geographic knowledge on Japan and the US it was quite obvious that a lot of this movie was shot in California. The off-road driving scenes showed mountains with few trees and dry grass. Japan is very humid and very rainy, especially during Summer (in most of Japan that is, Winter is wetter in some parts). There's also the fact that in a lot of the scenes, the sky was completely clear. These past few days have happened to be really sunny and hot in Southern Japan but they're relatively rare. It's little things like that which give away the fact that it was primarily not filmed in Japan. I must say Tokyo Drift is one of my favourite movies ever. Most other Fast and Furious movies don't seem to be about racing anymore unfortunately. There's a reason why Rush is one of the most loved racing movies ever after all. It's because it's actually about racing. The whole Japanese ambience of Tokyo Drift with all the Japanese cars was such a nice idea, especially since most racing movies show American muscle cars or expensive European brands. So, this was a nice touch to the franchise I must say
Edit: another thing is you can clearly see which scenes were shot in Japan or were CGI and which ones were shot in the US depending on the road. Japan's roads have different road markings. For example, the scene where Han is chased towards the end has double yellow lines in the middle of the street to divide the right lanes and left lanes. I don't think they actually exist in Japan

Hello Craig, great episode! All Tokyo Drift facts are welcome- many of us shares Your opinion- there were much effort put in this movie and it shame thats wasn't awarded back in the days :( Lemme ask again- did you considered make another episode with special guest- in this case with Toshi? I'm still wondering how's Your feelings about beeing replaced by Toshi? Is it possible to catch up with him? We are HUNGRY for some trivia, like:
-buying actualy japanese Tokyo Auto Saloon demo cars as "Heros" (like Veilside's Fortune)
-Tsuchiyas involvement (I've heard he was forced to driving more rough to mimic Sean's learning progress)
    - Toshi as Extra in the background crowd or plane scene (I noticed 3 Toshi's "cameos" maybe theres more)
-Mustang fake plates (zero can't be first dight, also theres special hiragana "Y" for US military)
-backgrond cars driving one way, and than opposite way in (under) viaduct chase scene
-JDM Insider dvd playing in the background TV's
These are few found by myself. I BET theres many more!
Keep up good work Craig- Imagine: I dislikes series after 5th movie, but absolutely loves what You doing here!
    Cheers!

I remember you going over this in a previous video.. Good to have a recap.. I love how you mentioned the Oro Valley, AZ.. That is a small city north of Tucson, AZ.. For some reason F&F movies enjoy including Arizona for their movies, whether it is the first movie with Brian's 2G Eclipse with AZ plates, and his drivers license or the 3rd including Oro Valley High School and the police station where the cop has Sean for questioning.. Good video tho, keep them up..

I'm sure there was a story by Craig that the drift through the busy intersection scene was filmed for real in Japan and a Japenese guy was hired to pretend to be the director, so when they got caught he spent the night in jail instead of the actual director?

It wasn’t the drift through the busy instersection, it was some other scene.

if you've been to japan before you could tell most of the racing was filmed in LA. Like the parking garage definitely didn't look like japan, and the big tunnel before shibuya was obviously Grand avenue in Downtown LA. Also the mountain scenes were definitely not japan since some of the signs and road markings were wrong.

By far the most underrated f&f movie in the franchise. My 2nd fav after the original!

Hey Craig, can you explain why the 240sx was selected 3 times in the franchise as well as the r34 gtr?

Sure. Because both of these cars were super popular back then -- and still are today.

Very informative video. I would never have imagined how much work went into producing these scenes. Scenes which have stood the test of time. Loved the film as its focus was still on cars. Thanks.

How fitting that this video came out just as Rockstar added an RX7 and a Fairlady/ 350/370z in GTA 5 for the latest Los Santos Tuners Update ☺️

Seems like many don't really know that it's a very common practice for film/TV productions to not actually film at the actual location the storyline supposedly takes place in.

Some or most people won't see it or know, except for the ones an eagle eye or live in those cities. They can spot the difference. Toronto is used a lot, especially back in the 90's Its' why you see the Space needle in shots and go "I didn't know "insert city name here" had that building lol
