I am growing mine indoors, here’s my info: Venus fly traps do require a period of at least 3 months of dormancy. Usually mid November-February. You never want your plant to be dormant in a space less that 30 degrees Fahrenheit or it will freeze it but if you can find a cool garage or a cooler windowsill, that will work well. I’ve seen some put in freezer but I would save that for last resort. During this time, you will reduce the light it gets significantly and let dry out before filling tray with water. Once February comes about, you can start to slowly introduce it back to more light for a few hours until you get it back to its original space and setup. Any other questions, leave them below!
You have a sundew in the nursery bought flytrap!! Make sure it is not a tropical variety bc if you put it into the cold when you make the flytrap go dormant it will kill it if it is not temperate. 💖💖💖
Thank you for all your tips and tricks! I just might try and have a Venus fly trap again! Btw, have you ever tried growing plants like strawberries or tomatoes in a garden?
How would you suggest helping them with dormancy when living in central florida (zone 9b)? We had a bit of colder weather but not 3 months of 35-50 degrees
I just bought a Golden Pothos plant and a Lemon Lime plant. My pothos’ roots are already out of the pot and dark. Should I use Perlite and orchid bark or something else? I need help in care. I’m scrolling through these vids to help my plant
Thank you for telling people to get one from a local nursery! I work a small nursery and spend so much time keeping our carnivorous plants happy and teaching customers how to do the same - it boils my blood seeing those plants trapped in plastic death prisons at big box stores!
@@bonsaibaby8257 what a wild thing to say or assume. You sound like someone who thrives on creating animosity. Of course they meant support local businesses before big box distributors, nothing against women owned businesses. @@Ant392 unfortunately you're probably going to want to get some. Regular soil isn't going to work. Recommended is peat moss mixed with sand or perlite. You can also get a carnivorous plant pre mix, too

Krystal, I have a couple of questions for you. Do you bottom-feed all of your plants? And when you repot a plant do you water it right afterward or wait 5-7 days? And, when replanting a plant that is reaching and you cut some of the bottom of the stem off do you let it form a scab on it before planting it or just go ahead after cutting it and plant it immediately? I'm sorry for so many questions but I recently found your channel and I love watching you! You have so much knowledge about plants and I would love your advice on what to do! Thanks! Have a great one! 💛 🪴 ☀️
I am STRUGGLING with my VFT!!! I got it as a freebie in the same pot as a drosera I bought. It was doing well (super tiny about an inch and a half across with 4-5 leaves, all had traps.) I fed it a tiny pantry moth that i wouded and its all been down hill from there. Now I can only keep the leaves alive long enough for a new one to start and no traps. I literally have one leaf about 1.5cm long with no trap (I cut it because it was black) and a tiny little sprout of a leaf coming out. Only thing I left out was that when the traps started dying I took it out of the drosera pot because it seemed like the traps were dying because they were hitting the edges of the pot - not the case. When I repotted it, it was so happy, until it wasn't. My most recent thought was that I put it in too big of a pot. So I repotted it again into one of those measuring cups that come with cough medicine. That was 2 days ago and a day after I did this it started growing a new leaf. My newest theory is that I kept water available at all times under the pot, so no I am letting the very top of the soil to dry before I water. I have never had so much trouble with a plant! Anyone with advice will be appreciated.
I bought a VFT from Walmart that almost every trap was black and the soil was dry I asked them for a discount as the price was $6 they said they would do $3 I asked them for $2 they agreed as I told them I didn’t want to spend that much if it was going to die. I cut off all the dead traps so it looked like a rhizome ball and roots changed the soil to fresh soil (peat and perlite) now few months later it has green growing and even has its first tiny trap starting to appear so it looks like it will make it.
Do you use the sphagnum moss for a lot of plants? Kind of random ? but I do like to mix my own soil & want to know if I should add it to my supplies. 😁
I have one from walmart and its overall really healthy, im feeding it love bugs and small cockroaches and its growing sprouts and growing an inch every month! Edit:i just read your info and I'm glad i got this venus in may and have a crazy plant lady as a mom! 😂
Hi! I recently bought one of them from my local home depot in one of those plastic boxes. I unboxed it and left it in its original pot for about 2-3 weeks and then decided to replant it. I replanted it in a terracotta pot with a standard potting mix (The websites I looked at said it was okay) and about a day later, it died! I still have it but all of the traps are dead. I am really interested in Venus Fly traps though so I may have to try again with one from a nursery. Any tips or advice on what I did wrong the first time?
Minerals are toxic to Venus flytraps and terra cotta pots have minerals since it’s from the ground. I would stick with plastic pots, distilled water, and a carnivorous mix. Hope this helps and you have good luck with your flytraps!
I would cut that flower stem to promote growth even more, as it takes lots of energy for it to flower. You can put it in normal tap water in a vase and it might still flower though.
Do you have or know anything about Lithops? I was scrolling Etsy and looking for things to grow and propagate that I can’t find locally. I came across them and just had to get the tiny little dudes. They might be called living stones but they look like little butts.

So I got a Venus fly trap before but it died during dormancy due to underwatering (I used up my supply of rainwater )And recently found another one from b and q (uk shop)Anyways I know that it’s probably just come out of dormancy as it has small traps and looks weak but a question i have is what are bugs that I can find in my yard to feed it?I tried ants and small flies but they always escape the trap because of how small they are ,keep in mind I can’t get mealworms or bloodworms because of my Mum being terrified of them (she won’t let me get them)All I have fed it so far was a small ant that didn’t escape and also some fish food because I heard they could eat that.
