    Hey kids! Its your good buddy Uncle Ben Eller here with a lesson i've been wanting to do for a while: a full breakdown on the hauntingly beautiful and creepy chords of the mighty OPETH! I've been obsessed with this band and their amazing melodies since Blackwater Park. But what chord types and scales does Mikael Akerfeldt and crew use to make their spooky music? Today, we find out!
    In this lesson, we will use the song Closure off the band's 2003 release "Damnation" to better understand what makes their music work the way it does. I'll give you a riff-by-riff breakdown on this tune, plus we will cover all the theory and technique tips you need to master their style!
    Gear: Martin SC-13E, Jim Dunlop picks and strings, Fractal Audio Axe FX 3
    Let me know what other classic Opeth songs you want to better understand next!!!

      It would be nice to see a song that mix accoustic/clean/distorted but that isn't too long like a lot of their songs, I imagine that that would be a hell of a work
      I suggest: Face of Melinda, Demon of the Fall and Dirge for November
      I also love Credence and still cant't play it (it's only clean guitar)

      A breakdown of "burden" or "coil" off watershed would be cool. If you're looking for acoustic guitar stuff to break down, "voice of the soul" by death would be great although I don't think it'd warrant a long video.

    they definitely make those "ugly" notes sound fucking amazing though. the picking pattern and how its presented musically is art. a lot of people need to remember that. a real artist just feels and really embodies their sound. I know some amazing musicians who know nothing about music theory but they somehow can feel and write beautiful and unique music.

    • @gaukarmadhouse
      @gaukarmadhouse 3 года назад +7

      @Emiliard Usoevski He's been playing acoustic since a young age and his acoustic playing in general really shines. I think he's just extremely intuitive when it comes to writing chord progressions and has a good sense of what sounds serious vs. typical and goofy.

    • @hazardeur
      @hazardeur 3 года назад +7

      @Emiliard Usoevski I believe him. What he doesn't mention though is that even though he doesn't know theory, his years of playing gave him a good ear and a sense of how the guitar and it's notes layout work. He maybe can't name a chord but he knows how that chord interacts with other chords and notes/melodies etc. Add to that a certain knack for unconventional sounds (which means he will search for the desired sound. likely longer than a theory schooled guy) and you really don't "need" theory to write amazing stuff.
      I kinda do it in a similar way. I know some basic theory but once i play i, for the most part, I dont think about theory and just let the sounds guide me. If i get stuck, theory becomes a tool to hopefully get me out of there. sometimes at least lol

    My favorite thing about this song is how they build so much tension in that middle part, and it leads you to believe that they are going to unleash something heavy as hell. But instead, Mikael goes the opposite direction, and brings everything down to a whisper. Masterful songwriting.

      @@halofour01 That's kind of a childish way to view music, in my opinion. There's so much to take in from their entire discography, or even from other bands that happen to growl. Still Life is probably my favorite album from them, followed closely by Pale Communion, but they have a lot to offer.

      @@Sthephyr12 You're right. What was I thinking preferring one style over another. Personal taste is a ridiculous thing to have. Everything is always equal to everyone all the time. My bad.

      @@halofour01 Not really how I intended that, but meh, whatever. Take it however you want. I do think it's childish to dismiss entire genres as childish because you don't like a particular vocal element, and one should listen to music outside of their personal tastes. And if that's your response, I don't feel the need to respect your pretentious opinion or your sarcastic counter. You do you, though. Be happy. Whatever.

    Love dem Swedish bois
    Edit: Probably the most haunting part of the song (maybe most haunting part on the album) is that weird part in the background at 3:27. Hearing it isolated in the Deliverance/Damnation documentary made it even creepier.
    Edit 2: You should go over something off Still Life next. I feel like that’s some of Mikael’s most complex and weird writing.

    I like your videos, and not because I can learn how to play stuff (given up guitar years ago), but because your explanations are the apple of an analytical mind's eye (if that makes any sense).
    I am drawn towards rhythm guitar and harmony, and your channel gives me closure!
    Pun intended.

    Being just a musician doesnt bring enough ability to create a such a beauty you should be Opeth to create this. I knew someone other than me had realized the shining taste of this song
