Can We Make the PS2 Whisper Quiet? - PS2 Noctua Fan Mod & HDD Caddy Review!
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 25 июл 2024
- Thanks to several new developments in the PS2 scene, curiosity, and some nostalgia the PS2 has been revisited quite a bit in recent years. One issue that people seem to consistently bring up, specifically earlier Fat/Phat model users, is the console seems to be a bit louder than we remember from 15-20 years ago? Several people have taken it upon themselves to make their own fan mods and replacements with Noctua fans, but we're taking a look at an easy to install, no cut, affordable Noctua fan mod created by The Peaceful Outcome.
We also take a look at two other pretty cool products The Peaceful Outcome is selling for the PS2: a sled bracket for 3.5" hard drives and a caddy for 2.5" hard drives! Both of these are only for Fat/Phat models of the PS2 and are designed so a drive can safely and securely be installed within the expansion bay of a PS2.

Would love to see you make this a series. Taking older consoles, and trying to replace the fans.
I second this!
@@katzenminze4444 and i third it
Idk, many of the tutorials already exist on RUclips. I have done noctua fan mods for the GameCube and Dreamcast, it's pretty simple.
@@SkyMcGowin not saying you can’t find similar content other places. I just like the way Mr Mario does his videos, and would love to see his interpretation of these mods.
@@tofugardens2409 ^this. I watch his videos not only bc they're informative but also bc they're entertaining.
Yesterday I was literally thinking "what if someone modded a PS2 with Noctua fans" lool reading ma mind.
That had been done A DECADE ago AT LEAST! 😂
LOL amazing
I actually find the fan noise on the PS2 very comforting. It has a distinct hum/whir that just makes me think of the console.
You would love living next to an airfield.
It's a nostalgia thing. Played the ps2 so much I can hear it right now in my head.
Same for me but with PS4. It was incredibly annoying while playing but now that I kinda retired mine, I find it somewhat charming.
Glad to see more people making videos on this! I made one a while back, but your production value is way better. The mod was a game changer for me since I really didn't use my PS2 all that much before I installed it because of how loud it was.
Part of the problem this fan kit has and why one is louder is that one of them is 5V and the other is 12V from what I can see from the video. The 12V fan will be running very quiet and pushing very little CFM while the 5V fan will be louder and push proper CFM to cool the console properly.
Found quote over at PSX-Place explaining voltages
“30000 sends around 5V to the fan weather there is a network adapter or not.
50000 sends around 4V to the fan without the network adapter, and around 6V with the adapter and hard drive installed.”
Do you think this matters though? In terms of longevity.
@@Syx7h the internal components will run hotter than the console was designed to cool them at which can degrade lifespan or cause components to die. The power supply comes to mind with this reduced airflow as those generate heat and the fan is directly responsible for the only airflow the console gets.
There is a zero percent chance that the Noctua is cooling worse than the stock fan. Those stock fans are cheap junk, they’re loud because they’re garbage fans. Noctua has some of the best fans on the market, especially when you step them down to lower voltages. Given how efficient Noctua fans are, I wouldn’t be at all surprised if they make the system run cooler than stock while being so quiet.
@@derangel9143 if you are running the 5V fan then yes you are correct. However if you run the 12V fan on a 5V PS2, it will be running with less voltage than Noctua designed it for which will spin it slow. Some people with the mod have commented that in some cases the fan even stopped spinning on them. This is more common with the models that use 4-6V fan as 4V just is not enough to reliably keep a 12V fan spinning. This also massively reduces CFM and thus cooling. The Noctua fan is great and cools better than the stock fan, but only with the 5V fan as Noctua designed it to run at 5V and not 12V.
@@driverdis3488 I'm pretty sure every Noctua fan is designed to run below 12V, they ship 5V adapters with most of their fans specifically because people will step them down in order to get even less noise out of them.
I was literally looking into this yesterday! Awesome video!
Thanks!
I've used Noctua fans in my PC for years, and I love their products. When the Dreamcast fan replacement mod became available, I jumped on it straight away, and it makes a huge difference. I hope we see more of these fan mods for other systems, like the OG Xbox for example without having to heavily modify the case itself.
With the recent newer usage the PS2 is getting with some older Fighting games in my radar especially, I really decided to keep my consoles, I'm so glad the community is helping the system to always feel fresh, thanks a lot for showing this! Cheers from Mexico
Thanks for the comment, I always love to see the reach of my viewers 🤗
Dog is like “he’s talking to himself again”
I swear that's accurate.
Thanks for this review. Sound pressure levels are difficult to record for a test like this, and even harder to interpret the data since decibels are measured logarithmically. Roughly speaking it takes +10 SPL to double the volume of a sound source. That means that the 60 db stock fan noise is three times as loud as the mod's 30 db.
I have eyed this mod for a while, and personally love the 3D printed utilitarian aesthetic.
really love your videos mate, keep them coming. No one in my actual life is a fan of retro. in fact, people think I am strange for liking retro. How I would love to sit and discuss ps2 fans with someone for 30mins! ;) this is as close as I can get to that. Reminds me, no this hobby is not strange! So, thanks man.
Isn't that the beauty of the internet? You can find your niche and interests anywhere!
Awesome review as always my friend. Much appreciated. Blessings from Ontario Canada!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I have a PS2 slim that plays via network but I found myself watching this video because the way you discuss things makes it more enticing to watch.
I appreciate it, thank you!
I actually bought this fan mod for my 50000 series PS2 about 6 mos. Ago and it did make a world of difference for noise including a 3.5" HDD, and I ended up putting the 50000 series stock fan in my 30000 series for noticable improvement and I was able to reuse the part. Now the 30000 series fan just sits collecting dust until I can find some sort of reuse.
Can confirm it certainly made my 50000 quieter. I think there's certainly an aspect of sound quality as decibels doesn't always show the full story, pitch etc plays a part in how annoying / noticeable the sound is I guess. As now I certainly can't hear it much if not at all, the main noise is the harddrive now.
So, your 50000 model with the HDD installed didn't get louder as shown in the video? I also have 50000 and the fan becomes really loud when Network adapter+HDD is inside, so I'd like to buy the mod as well.
@@Rotoid Yeah this will help I can bet
Oh god, I needed this, after pulling out my ps2 to fmcb it, I realized how loud it really was.
I have the same one. Works amazing. !!!! Awesome video. Thanks.
I printed out my own adapter and installed it a few hours ago. I’ll have my video on the process uploaded next week 👍
Wow as someone who has moved to emulation for over a decade now when it comes to the PS2 in particular i still gotta say this is pretty awesome, have a lot of respectt for people keeping the old workhorses alive and there is still just something special about having a physical presence that i miss about it.
Do you guys have CRT's or anything you play it on by the way? I imagine that experience would be pretty incredible, would be surprised if it was any good on a modern widescreen TV though considering what native resolution looks like in my space and the need for widescreen patches especially.
Amazing video - You saved me buying the fan and getting the HDD SSD Bracket instead -
Thanks for another great video!
i found those fan kits on ebay recently after my 50004's fan gave up the ghost, i might just go for the normal fan as i've been wanting to throw in a 500GB SSD in the machine anyway.
I do wonder if those aftermarket sata adapters works with the fans as well since i don't have any use for the network portion of the original HDD adapter.
I purchased both the fan and HDD kit, I didn't have an issue with the HDD bracket that was in the video, my HDD is within the allowance that is stated on the kit's website though
It would be interesting to see a heat comparison between the old and new fan. I did a 12v fan mod on my 30001 and wasn't satisfied with the heat dissipation of the 12v fan (it wasn't a noctua fan mind you) and ended up tweaking the fan circuit to keep the temperature to my liking.
The 50000 PS2 is way quieter than the 30000 on the stock fan. You need to check the temperature on the 30000 series on the mod fan since it runs slower speed and the 30000 will run hotter if you slowed the fan down.
Fortunately the PS2 does have temperature monitoring - it will increase the fan speed if it gets too hot, and if that doesn't help it will shut off, flashing the red light until it is cooled sufficiently.
@@nitrax8629 I also have a 30000 and didn't notice any fan speed changes when attempting a similar fan mod even though the service manual I found seemed to suggest that it was variable speed. Maybe I just didn't get it hot enough. I did notice the heat rising and shut it down before it got too hot. I saw that it had thermal fuses and didn't want to fry those. Is the variable fan speed maybe only available on later 30xxx revisions? I don't know much about PS2 internals other than the observations I made with my particular unit.
Love the videos MrMario. I don't remember my ps2 making noise!
Good thing to not have to remember!
Hey MrMario2011, I have a UK/EU model SCPH-39003 with a 320GB HDD installed & I can confirm the Noctua fan mod DOES work on non NTSC models. Think i'm going to buy that HDD caddy however & maybe create a flap or some of pulley to remove the drive without damaging it.
Thanks for the review & peace from London!
I have a SCPH-39004 with a 250GB HDD and it is a load boy
Did you run your ps2 for an hour or more gaming with it after? Try it and see what happens, mine shutdown from overheating.
Very interesting, if I would ever try on my 30004 R PAL where should i confirm the compatibility?
I have a ps2 fat going through the system and accidentally broke the fan connection from the board any tips or tricks that you have for getting new coolant ways on this system
I happy to hear the fan kick in every time I turn on my PS2, because it means I didn't mess up the soldering. 😅
Very good point! 🤣
A friend did this mod and the new fan wouldn't spin. What's worse is the old fan also wont spin, any idea what could cause this?
I love the Ps2 and i finally found both styles and bought them but whether the console makes noise or not doesn't matter or the problem never bothered me i just want to know how to install the fan upgrade
If they are similar what causes the extra sound on the 50 series? Can it be a faulty fan?
Did anyone complete this mod?
How is the 12v noctua doing after some time?
Should we put 12v or 5v?
Thanks!
Game Cube Fan Mod next please!! The fan is so loud after my GC Loader install
I did this mod myself a couple of months back...and I could not believe it when i fired up my PS2! I actually needed to check if the damn noctua fan was running, it was that much of a difference!
For sure!
if i use the spacer can i use a 2.5 ide with an original network adapter
I like the fan noise it makes me remember playing it with out the fan noise its like a playstation 3
Just curious Mr Mario is it possible to run games from an SD card using a hard drive adapter to USD card port?
Thanks for the video! Grabbed a hdd caddy since mine is always flopping around.
Can't be playing Flappy HDD out here.
Have a link to that sound meter app? Theres a bunch of those on IOS and have same/similar names. One with the exact name is different than yours.
I have ps2 slim with original fan broken and i thinked to put a pc fan 12v conected to usb but i don't know how to positioned corectly. Suck fresh air from outside and blow inside case, or suck hot air from case and blow outside.
I have a question. Did they update for the 5000 series ps2??
I have never seen this mentioned anywhere yet, but you can disassemble the case of the ssd drive, the actual PCB size is usually a fraction of the SSD enclosure. If you just plug the SSD in your PS2 without its enclosure, you don't even need the plastic thing. Just make sure the PCB doesn't come in contact with the metal from the PS2 HDD bay and you'll be fine. Before you take this route, look up a disassembly video for your SSD model to see if it's worth it, PCB sizes may vary.
I can't seem to find if my system is the early 30000 version, mines a 30003R, which I assume is that non compatible model, as the last number is just the region as I understand, so I believe I can see that as a 0, but I can't find any info about if the R at the end means anything
As far as I know all the 30003R models are compatible, having 8 screws on the bottom. Another way to tell them is the position of the iLink connector - if it's more closely aligned with the top USB port or missing entirely it is compatible, whereas if it's in line with the bottom USB port it won't work.
Now I wonder, if i add new lubricating fluid to the actual ball bearings? Ive already did this with a server fan and the wine went away (still a loud fan). I might look into this someday.
(also removing all the dust helped). Great video tho, tempting to print or get this
I'm sure that would improve the stock fans, but they're still just loud from what I've experienced.
Somebody knows why my ps2 is loud as a jet engine? There is no dust in the ps2 and the Pad on the cpu still seems fine
I will find same a modification for xbox 360 somewhere for fat model?
I have a 10 screw model PS2 30001. I wonder if that is a solution to get a noctua into that.
I've dealt with loud fans from old computers practically my whole life. I live right in front of a busy street, with passing cars easily filling my house with dust no matter how many times we clean it every week, and it's obvious that things with fans would easily suck the dust in. It's common for my PSU's fan to start rattling really loud because of that, so, at least once a month, I use some sewing machine oil on it, and it works on silencing the thing. I've even went as far as to dig a hole through the metal housing of the PSU just where the fan is so it's easier to lubricate it XD. But now the same thing is happening with my Slim PS2's fan, though I'm afraid that the fan assembly is too flimsy and I may break the little thing trying to oil it. I might have to buy a replacement for it...
I got one of those early 30001 models, they're weird because they don't have a single flat motherboard, instead is a sandwich of boards, on one side of the console and it doesn't have a space to put the 3D printed frame for the new fan.
I love how people are doing kinds of upgrades to older consoles, I think it gives them a second life
I agree.
I use in my PS2 an SD-Card and a modded Networkadapter for easy access
good info thank you
You're welcome!
After watching this I went to see how loud my 50000 series is, and well, not loud at all (even with HDD installed), but thanks for the video and pointing this out.
Glad I could help!
I bought a cheap fan replacement for my 3000 series with a 5000 series fan. The 5000 fan was quieter out of the box. Doesn't sound like a hairdryer anymore.
Were?
Seems like they need to do a belt loop for the 3.5 caddy so you don't have to remove the metal plate and can pull the HDD out with the network adapter in one go.
Anything like this for PS3 and Xbox 360?
So.. A Sandisk SSD SSD Plus of 1To works great with a PS2 fat model ????
Good to know ...!!
I have that third party sata network adapter with my 50000 series the one that isn't actually a network adapter. Would that also work with this fan mod?
Should work fine.
My phat PS2 is old but never had noisy fan issues
But again I maintain my PS2 very regularly
Is there anyway to fan mod the PS2 slim???
Thanks 👌
Ok so a word of warning to all viewers here. I’ve just finished this mod and while yes it certainly is a lot lot quieter what he hasn’t said and I’m not sure if is even aware, is that after running the ps2 for an hour gaming it overheats gives the blinking red light and shuts down. A hand on the side of the unit confirms it’s very hot! This Noctua fan is not capable of running at a high enough voltage to give sufficient cooling! It’s not pulling enough from the ps2 to move sufficient air and give enough flow. I literally just wasted around £40 GBP importing one and a lot of time installing to find that out. Today I will put my original Nidec fan back in!!! Forget this install it’s really bad idea and I guarantee you’ll end up with a heat issue if you play for an hour or more following it. instead buy a 5000x series or slim for quieter ps2 gaming. You cannot swap 5000x series fans over into earlier phats either as the fan speed is controlled by the board so that idea won’t work either just to be clear. Off to eBay I go! Great channel but this mod is not fully explored and properly time/ temperature tested.
Shame I didn't see your comment before "upgrading" to the Noctua Fan and experiencing the same overheating problem. Did you perhaps find any valid alternative? Some fan running with 7V but quiter than the original? I heard the 5000x fan is still loud with HD mounted on the PS2. Thanks!
nice but whats with all the square-y video glitching, looks kinda like a watch dogs cutscene sometimes
i love Noctua fans.
best on the market next to "be quite" hardware
My first ones, liking them so far!
Beast video!
Thanks!
Sweet, will have to see if i can source something in the UK
I love the concept. I hate how cheap that 3D printed bracket looks.
the first PS2 i bought was a slimline, i decided to trade it in with my boss for a PS2 Fat with a HDD Adapter and 320GB IDE HDD, i certainly noticed that it was far louder than the slim i got, especially with the HDD Running with FHDB installed
I'd like to see someone do a 3D printed spacer!
Not sure which model I have but it's still whisper quiet with the original fan.
later phat from 2003 probably.
Hi MrMario. So, if you have SCPH-5000X + SATA HDD, this mod is completely useless as the console becomes even louder? Or is it just the specific issue of your prototype kit? I have SCPH-50008 and the fan is absolutely quiet, but if the Network adapter+HDD is inside, the fan works much louder which is annoying, so I'd like to buy this mod anyway.
The SCPH-5000X models has 4 V on the fan header when no network adapter is installed. That voltage is increased to 6 V by the system when the network Adapter is present. More voltage will make any fan run faster.
SSD mod to PS2 POGGERS!
Hi! you updated the fan with a NF-A6x25 5V?
I'm not the one to ask as I'm not the creator of this.
crap I have a 10 screw playstation ... are there any solutions that exists?
i have a late 5000 model with a ssd installed. its pretty quite honestly
Yep, not much you need to do there.
My son great video
i mean if you can get a ssd for cheap it might be worth it just to not hear the spinning platters
The fan might've been "louder" in the 50000 test because you put your phone right in front of the fan. If the new fan was moving more air, then the additional airflow blowing into your phone's mic would be "louder", but that wouldn't necessarily translate to a more audible fan. Putting your phone the path of the airflow is going to make your measurements misleading, unfortunately. Still, appreciate this video. I might do this mod.
Sound of the video is shifted to the left, why not make it mono, to have a balance. I'm in headphones.
I have the fan but I am very stressed about taking apart my ps2 to do this because even with the video as hell I still don’t have the confidence to do this.
21:10 SSD's have much faster seek time than HDD's, as you have to wait for the platters to spin up and the heads to move. The difference is enough to warrant choosing an SSD for the PS2. the sustained read speeds are negligible but performance boosts aren't all about faster loading times. They're also less power hungry which means lower heat.
If you go with an SSD you'll get a noticeable performance increase and your PS2 will last longer.
I cant lie, the loud ps2 had a slight charm to it. It's not as intense as the original ps3 or 4, its subtle.
The fan seems interesting but, admittedly, I don't have a use for it. Either I'm used to the sound or my PS2 is quieter than other fans. In fact I had my PS2 on for the duration I was watching this video, and my PS2 is currently no more than 2 and a half feet from my head, and I've forgotten about the fan noise multiple times.
As for the bracket, I'm surprised to see it break. Maybe I got an extra-improved version but I've not had such issues.
Still, good video.
A few notes from someone that just got this for a 50000 series:
1. The install is moderate in difficulty. I'm in repair so I can run through a device quickly and this took me about 20 mins start to finish. A total newbie would take about 30-45 mins. The reason why is...
2. The 3D printed back plate is of average quality and precision. I got the unit from the same business, btw. It just wasn't as clean of a fit as I'd have liked so most of the time I spent making it sit in there properly (when the original plate quickly and easily sits flush).
If they upgraded to a plastic molding this would get a higher score from me.
3. As for results, it's definitely shocking in now quiet it is now. The hard drive is louder than the fan now so an SSD would be literally silent. I'm not *that* retentive about removing all noise and just wanted my 20yo PS2 to not sound like a vacuum cleaner. It achieved that.
4. Finally, I do question if it's equally effective and silent or if you're trading some cooling for silence. The fan mod is a 12v fan and PS2 uses 5v (7v with Network/HDD) to power the fan. So, is it just a 12v fan turning at 7v power at the expense of system cooling or does it do an equal job as stock at the reduced sound? I'd like more in-depth testing there.
All said, assuming the thermals are roughly the same as stock I'd call it a terrific addition. I'm happy with it and only wish the plastic printing was better.
Overall I'd give it a 9/10.
I have a PS2 Fat 5004, do you think it will run quieter with this modification?
Thermals the same with the fan mod?
I didn't test thermals, but I'm not worried.
I’ve been waiting so long for this. Why hasn’t it been done before? Who tf knows. People have been doing a more invasive version of this mod for years.
Ive got one of these it is a night and day difference. Its dead quiet! Highly recommend everybody who loves the fat ps2! 😎
🤫
The 50000 series fat models are the most quiet ones.
Agreed, the 79000 series slims being a close second.
Noctua is king of fans in the PC world. I sit kinda far from my PS2 do the fan noise is less annoying. I had forgotten hownload the disk drive is though.
The drive-caddy needs to be of metal... It is that simple!
As a someone who owns a 3D printer, yes, it needs to be metal if they are going to sell it. 3D print would be fine if you just make one for your own use.
That fan noise is too nostalgic for me. Still an awesome mod though
I remember my first days with my new PS2... I was shocked about the fan noises and I was thinking about a refund!!! Only WIPEOUT kept me from returning it ;) All my previous consoles were absolutely fan-less and super silent. A video console should be silent, IMHO. I really miss those past days.
I never noticed until I revisited the system!
should you not play a limit pushing game?
Gran Turismo 4 perhaps?
It doesnt matter much because the PS2 is not like modern computers which set the fan speed on the fly. The PS2 can increase fan speed but it doesnt decrease, it happens mostly after a certain amount of time, not because of hardware load.
@@lordeilluminati Hi Jeff, thank you for taking the time to explain this. I find stuff like this fascinating.
Strong money for 3d printed parts you could knock up in an afternoon...
Only if you have a 3D printer and are willing to do it all yourself, of course.
the only console i have that is too loud is my ps4
and yes i clean it twice a year ( the fan & psu )
I have this mod. It's a little pricey, especially if you have to import, but it's totally worth it.
For sure
Next time, try to do a video about an IDE to SD adapter + SD Extender + chinese HDD adapter modded with a slot for the SD card on top. No moving parts, and no need to add/remove games through LAN, because due to the MOD the SD is accessible externally and can be easily connected to a PC to add/remove games MUCH faster without dismantling the HDD adapter 😉
