Hi I love your videos, whenever I see an educated feeders I always refer them to you. I have a one and a half year-old GSD, 65 pounds. How do I know how much and what pray I can feed. Like let’s just say feed a rabbit is that enough?
Most adult dogs need around 2% of their body weight’s worth of food daily. This does of course vary. For example, if they are highly active, then they should have around 3.5%. I hope I helped you.
I'm the same, I have pretty bad necrophobia, if it looks too much like a whole animal I can't get anywhere near it, let alone touch it. I have gotten to the point where feet are ok, but I haven't worked up to heads or anything like that.

In my country the market for raw food is rather small, and hence people selling whole prey is very rare. Also, would feeding whole prey encourage them to go after live animals?
I think feeding them whole prey from a poultry farm would be okay as long as you make sure they aren’t carrying any diseases that could be dangerous for your pet. I feed my pets rats/mice that are meant for snakes quite a bit. One thing to remember though is that variety is important when it comes to whole prey. Also, feeding whole prey doesn’t really increase prey drive as the food you feed isn’t alive so therefore shouldn’t increase prey drive.

Hi there! I started raising quail for my cats this month. Calculate how much oz of food your cat needs per day (based on activity levels and weight) then find yourself a quail that meets or exceeds that amount! For example my eldest needs 2.5% of her BW per day. Which comes out to .24lbs or 3.76oz per day. Whole prey is considered balanced! But it would behoove you to incorporate other whole prey throughout the week to make sure they are getting a variety of meats. There’s another video she does on all the minerals they need and how to calculate how much is in their food. Taurine is essential and is found in red meat. Quail is obviously not red meat. And finding data on the composition of whole raw quail has become rather challenging. Which is why I will be incorporating other whole prey to make sure I’m meeting all the nutritional gaps. Best of luck!
I used to feed my ferret a whole prey diet but got chewed out by my vet & nurse because I’m immunodeficient & require weekly immune replacement therapy. I compromised with a freeze dried raw food, but really want to ensure I’m still giving her the best nutrition possible. Do you do consultations at all? I would really appreciate ensuring she is getting everything she needs as she was really sick as a baby when I got her & I was able to get her better by feeding her a more species specific diet. Plus she’s the best little assistance ferret & I want to make sure I’m doing everything to support her health since she’s always doing the same for me. Thanks 🙏🏻
If you can prepare raw meat and cook it for yourself, I don't see why they would get mad at you for feeding raw to your pet. You'd treat it the same as handling raw food for yourself.
@@nocturnerose7696 preparing & cooking raw food for myself is also a risk, I have to really practice good food saftey as I do not have an immune system & require weekly infusions of immunoglobulins. Also it is different feeding it as my ferret cannot wash her mouth out or paws out so she then carries the bacteria with her everywhere. Even using freeze dried, she is only feed in once spot & I diligently clean up everything using hydrogen peroxide to ensure any remaining bacteria is killed & trust me there is still some using freeze dried, but it was much more when feeding straight raw. I appreciate the thought but this is the only way I can still feed her as close as a species specific diet as possible while still ensuring my health & saftey the best I can. I would like to make sure I do not have any nutritional gaps though, but have struggled to find a ferret nutritionalist hence why I messaged Bryn to see if it’s a service she provides.
can anyone tell me what if you have a farm? I don't want my dogs thinking "oh this smells just like the animals I guard, maybe I can just eat one". any information on feeding whole pray to farm dogs?
I dont have experience in it yet, but from what i read in forums many people feed their farm's LGD (livestock guardian dogs) raw diet with no problem. They know the different between dead animal, livestock/flocks theyre supposed to protect, and wild animal going into their territory. They're pretty smart
So if wolfs can eat a fresh kill without it ever being frozen how come our dogs can’t ther built the same way aren’t they? that’s one thing I’ve always been skeptical of how can wild animals like wolfs coyotes and other animals eat fresh kill but our dogs can’t what’s the difference?I don’t think that’s true I’ve been to Mexico wer dogs are roaming the streets because they’ve been abandoned and have seen them actually hunt wild small game animals and eat them freshly killed and nothing ever happens to them ther perfectly fine eating a fresh kill if we wer to let our domestic dogs out in the wild to survive on ther own they would have to kill and adapt to nature just like wolfs they are perfectly capable of eating fresh kill that’s a myth that you have to freeze ther food yes it might be safer to freeze it but it’s not necessary true I’ve seen it with my own eyes in countries like Mexico wer people don’t always feed ther dogs and the dogs are roaming around just like wild animals hunting this is true you can see things like these in outside the US it happens more often than u think ther are thousands of dogs that are homeless and uncared for in a lot of 3rd world countries and these dogs have to survive on ther own just like wild animals
Would the liver in the animal be excessive for my dog? Because dogs are only meant to have 5% of their meal be liver. Might be a dumb question but I thought I should confirm before trying to do this hahah
Not a dumb question! The liver takes up a small portion of that animal's body so it shouldn't be in excess unless you're feeding your dog a prey animal that is a lot bigger than they are!
Is there a concern for cats or dogs wolfing down food too fast and swallowing too large of a piece of bone? I like this idea, but I'm worried that my one cat whil just swallow a piece of bone that's too big for him to pass properly since he's really not a chewer even with his commercial raw. I have to hold any raw meaty bones I give him and make sure he chews. he's coughed up part of a sardine before because he didn't chew it well enough. Would it be alright to grind the whole prey in that case?
I grind my whole prey for fear of choking. it's a "me" problem I know it's just a phobia of mine after witnessing my dog choke before. I wouldn't worry about swallowing some bone too big to pass out the other end. the bone is digested, even large chunks of bone. it doesn't pass all the way through whole and out the other end as it went in. I know my dogs are missing out on teeth cleaning and mental stimulation of chewing, I try give them other things to cover this.

See we've been feeding my pet carnivore and they have the WHOLE grounds option since we have other animals our time often get consumed and we want to make sure everything gets and stays clean (cuz we are still dealing with raw meat) but I know nutrients can come from the feathers but I don't think there's any feather maybe a few but not like how there should be however I know when I had hermit crabs I could buy ground chicken feather so I'm wondering if perhaps I can find a clean reliable source of that I can eventually get ground WHOLE prey at this point. Idk where I'd get muskrat fur but hey
it depends what you mean by sick; if youre talking about parasites you have to freeze it at -4 degrees or less for a month because that temperature kills common bacteria and parasites
Young kittens still have their milk teeth in, so you should definitely feed it ground up. However in around 6-7 months, all of their adult teeth should be in by this point. This is when you can start feeding small animals whole.
Usually, you can get it from a specialized supplier. Reptile food companies and those who breed feeder rodents are the most common sources. Since reptiles and other exotic pets usually don’t have good commercial diets available for them, most companies who sell reptile food exclusively sell whole prey items such as quail, chicks, rodents and etc. they’ll usually ship it to you. You can find out more about which companies ship to your area and which ones are reputable by talking to reptile owners. Your local herpetological society or zoo is also a great resource. Some pet shops will also sell frozen thawed rodents for use as snake food. But, this can sometimes be overpriced when compared to ordering things online in bulk. Reptile specific pet shops typically have better prices and more transparency when compared to chain pet stores since many reptile shops breed their own rodents. The next option is to skip the middle man and get whole prey items straight from someone who breeds feeder rodents. This option typically is quite reasonably priced. But, the downside is that you have to be plugged into the community of local reptile owners to know about this. As with the larger companies, it pays to ask local reptile owners.
I have started to give my cat whole prey but I still have a doubt left, sites on the internet are saying that wild cats leave the gizzards as it contains powerful stomach acid,so what should I do?!
There's a chance your pet can choke on anything they're attempting to swallow, whether that be a treat or a raw bone, so yes! Always monitor your pet when they're eating, and if you're worried, section the bones into bite sized pieces.
What whole prey you recommend for large dogs that don't like to chew their food much.. I used to give chicken feet as treats to my German shepherd but be started just trying to swallow them so small animals would probably not do it
Sure you can, if your dog does well on it. Although it can get expensive over time and is quite difficult to source for most people. This is why whole prey is usually something fed in moderation.
i'm currently struggling to get them to eat whole prey. my dog will eat rabbit though she often will leave the organs behind. but ive tried other animals with no luck. i have even less luck with the cats.
How do I introduce whole prey to a kitten ? Mine is 2 and a half months old rn when should I introduce whole prey and do I start with pinkies? Should i cut them or not ? I want to introduce him to whole prey as soon as it is possible so he wont be a picky eater when he's older
Start now! The earlier, the better. Starting out with pinkies is fine and a decent size for them. Even a little bigger should be just fine. You can give whole or cut up, whatever he seems more attracted to. Adolescent animals aren't going to provide all necessary nutrients though, so he should also be eating a balanced raw meal or commercial wet food along with it.
Hey I really need help, I feed my dog raw for dinner but kibble in the morning. I have been feeding him hills science diet for the last 4 years since he was fed that ever since he was rescued and that’s what the vet always told us to feed. I’ve recently been more into my dog’s diet and I’ve realised that hills is probably not the best kibble. Although I want to feed my dog raw full time, I’m not able to do that so I want to change to a better kibble. I have been looking into the brand carna4 since it has no synthetics. The big thing I’m worried about is that a lot of food now is grain free and I would feed grain free if I was sure that it was better for my dog. However, I’ve been seeing a lot of articles saying that grain free food is causing heart diseases so I’m scared to feed grain free food so can u make a few dog kibble suggestions or make a video on this topic
You can certainly feed a much better kibble than HSD. All of my rescues ate HSD and were quickly switched to Taste of the Wild, As with anything you research nowadays on the net, you’ll find info that extols one method and then info that will eviscerate the same...it’s all confusing leaving the well intended bewildered. I prefer the quality kibble with sardines, salmon and Greek nonfat yogurt as toppers. My dog will eat raw turkey legs, chicken legs and wings. He will not negotiate raw organ meats at all, however, if I cook it he will devour it! Feed the best you can afford and will be able to stick to. There is no point is starting what you will not finish. For me whole prey is out of the question. I kept large pythons and boas once and they would not eat anything other than whole prey frozen/thawed or live. Domestic dogs are not reptiles. I wish more dog parents would focus on their dogs proper socialization, training and regular exercise (especially off leash) this is also a vital part of a dog’s well being and ours too!
I am about to add whole prey for the first time to my 4 White Swiss Shepherd’s (Berger Blanc Suisse) ranging in ages from 1year olds (x2), a 2 year old male (neutered) and 3 year old intact female The 2 year old male has been diagnosed with Immune Mediated Polyarthritis and Sesamoiditis The 2 one year old dogs are going through Service Dog training The 3 year old is my personal Service Dog I’m not sure if they are going to be interested in eating whole prey. What are some more tips to encourage them to eat them? They are still getting a very small amount of kibble in their food, this is mainly because the puppies are still a little young and the vets want the male to have kibble. My service dog doesn’t really like 100% raw as I have tried her before Please let me know I have: -Quail -Mice -Small rabbit
Plzz plzzz plzz tell us how can we prepare whole prey at home like we buy whole prey so how much do we need to freeze it and how to give puppies a whole prey???
I have 6 Guinea pigs at home and preparing for a puppy, do you think i should keep them seperated at all times? Is there chance that my puppy's gonna eat them?
I would keep them separated regardless, not because your puppy will want to eat them, but because your puppy might try and play with them, which may harm them!
That can depend on the puppy’s age and size. For the most part, it is recommended to grind bones for young puppies as they don’t have their adult teeth in yet.
My dog would die of happiness, she kills and eats birds and goes after roadkill anyway (super high prey drive) --- how and where do you seek *clean* whole prey?
@Paws of Prey I plan on doing some small game hunting to supplement whole prey into my dogs regular raw diet (I'm new to all of this, his cancer forced my hand). Is it OK to freeze a squirrel or rabbit whole in a vacuum sealed bag? I figured I'd just remove the intestinal tract and then freeze whole for 1 month.
@@PawsofPrey hi! I wanted to ask if it's ok to feed whole prey that I've raised myself if I slaughter it and let it sit in the freezer for a few weeks? lol this sounds kinda creepy but is it ok??
Most fully grown dogs need around 2% of their body weight’s worth of food daily. This of course does vary from dog to dog. For example, they’ll need around 3.5% if your pet is highly active. I hope this helped. :)
Personally I think this is a bad idea if there is a farm near you or someone has a pet rabbit in there yard, u have now though your dog where meat comes from and the smell of what you're feeding hem smells like live animals, so he now know if he kills them he can eat them, many farmers will shoot first and ask questions later and have a legal right to do that, u can't have them arested, they can also sue u for the value of the livestock and any unborn livestock if the animal was pregnant, in an ideal world it would be a problem but sh*t happens and dogs do get out
People with LGD's on their farms will feed them raw. The smell of an alive animal and a dead one are very different. It's why most people who use dogs for hunting will train them with live animals, not dead ones.
This is a completely misleading video. It’s like saying humans should live just the way we did back in the Stone Age because that’s the original way we lived even though we know by then the average human life span was about 20years or less just like how wild dogs and wolf have a very short lifespan in the wild,
That has a lot more to do with environmental factors than it does diet. When it comes to the nutrients the animal needs according to the NRC bad AAFCO, these nutrients can often be met by a whole prey animal. Makes sense since this is what their bodies were designed to consume. Of course, feeding our pet roadkill is dangerous and whole prey animals need to be sourced from somewhere raising animals for human or pet consumption.
Your pet just think: Man, my owner is such a great hunter.

How long would say a whole chicken last two ferrets?
Very good and informative video.
Thanks!
can anyone tell me what if you have a farm? I don't want my dogs thinking "oh this smells just like the animals I guard, maybe I can just eat one". any information on feeding whole pray to farm dogs?
I dont have experience in it yet, but from what i read in forums many people feed their farm's LGD (livestock guardian dogs) raw diet with no problem. They know the different between dead animal, livestock/flocks theyre supposed to protect, and wild animal going into their territory. They're pretty smart
I have a parrot and a I was interested on trying chickens intact but I have the same doubt about it.
watch joseph carter the mink man.....i think if you train them to eat it from a certain spot, that might be a solution

She has put a few links to source whole prey in the description of this video. Although I’m not too sure if they ship to Europe.
If I just feed hole pray to my cat do is there any supplements I need to add to it ? If there is could you tell me which thanks
Would the liver in the animal be excessive for my dog? Because dogs are only meant to have 5% of their meal be liver. Might be a dumb question but I thought I should confirm before trying to do this hahah
Despite how big it looks, the liver only comprises 2-5% of the body weight of most animals!
Not a dumb question! The liver takes up a small portion of that animal's body so it shouldn't be in excess unless you're feeding your dog a prey animal that is a lot bigger than they are!
How often should I feed my ferret whole prey if I feed a franken prey balanced diet already
As much as you can! But even once a week is better than nothing.
Does anyone know is frozen pinky mice that are usually sold for snakes, is okay for dogs?
Hello guyss, can i ask about ur reserach from dry food to raw food, need info....whats ur study? do u have a vet or nutritionist background? Bcs i like ur videos its informative, educational, and i wanna react ur video on my channel for my subscriber. And i am newbie in rawfood for cat too! Thankyouu...
I have worked at veterinary offices for a little over 3 years and I'm currently studying to get my certification in canine nutrition. I will never be board certified because that's reserved only for vets, but nonetheless it's a course many vets take to further their education. Thanks!!
@@PawsofPrey wow God bless u, thanks!! your info worth it!
Interesting thx
My stomach is like 😫🤢🤮🤮🤮..
How do you prevent disease with feeding whole pray, if the animal was sick or something.. 🤔🤔🤔
it depends what you mean by sick; if youre talking about parasites you have to freeze it at -4 degrees or less for a month because that temperature kills common bacteria and parasites
How would you feed whole prey to a kitten?
Young kittens still have their milk teeth in, so you should definitely feed it ground up. However in around 6-7 months, all of their adult teeth should be in by this point. This is when you can start feeding small animals whole.
How do you balance a diet for a 3 month puppy for a whole pray
Is whole prey more save to give?
Yes!
How many do I need to feed a medium size dog ? Or is it just one whole prey or multiple?
Where do we buy whole prey?
I just linked some places in the description - sorry about that!
I have a jack russel what do you recommend typs of animal to feed whole pray to her?
Quail and small rabbits, and chicks are great!
What about chicken beak? Can it be like a blade.
Great video! But is there a chance my dog or cat might choke on a bone while they eat their whole prey?
There's a chance your pet can choke on anything they're attempting to swallow, whether that be a treat or a raw bone, so yes! Always monitor your pet when they're eating, and if you're worried, section the bones into bite sized pieces.
@@PawsofPrey Alright, thank you!
😭😭😭 too bad you don't ship to Canada. Know anyone in Canada that is doing what you do?
What whole prey you recommend for large dogs that don't like to chew their food much.. I used to give chicken feet as treats to my German shepherd but be started just trying to swallow them so small animals would probably not do it
A full grown rabbit or a bigger breed chicken, like a jersey giant, would probably be a good place to start
COULD I FEED MY DOG WHOLE PREY EVERY DAY OR WOULD IT BE TO BONE HEAVY? Pls respond
Sure you can, if your dog does well on it. Although it can get expensive over time and is quite difficult to source for most people. This is why whole prey is usually something fed in moderation.
It very natural to them, it would be fine
i'm currently struggling to get them to eat whole prey. my dog will eat rabbit though she often will leave the organs behind. but ive tried other animals with no luck. i have even less luck with the cats.
Adolescent animals aren't going to provide all necessary nutrients though, so he should also be eating a balanced raw meal or commercial wet food along with it.
i have a question if these whole prey animals need to be frozen how come wolves or bears be able to eat prey in the wild and not pets?
@@stanbrooks7923 I know that’s why I want to switch my kibble
@@stanbrooks7923 I’m a little hesitant on taste of the wild as there are so many synthetic vitamins in the food

Hello. Can my doberman eat whole prey rabbit including all gut and organs?
Yes, but make sure to freeze for 3-4 weeks if you caught it in the wild
I am about to add whole prey for the first time to my 4 White Swiss Shepherd’s (Berger Blanc Suisse) ranging in ages from 1year olds (x2), a 2 year old male (neutered) and 3 year old intact female
The 2 year old male has been diagnosed with Immune Mediated Polyarthritis and Sesamoiditis
The 2 one year old dogs are going through Service Dog training
The 3 year old is my personal Service Dog
I’m not sure if they are going to be interested in eating whole prey. What are some more tips to encourage them to eat them?
They are still getting a very small amount of kibble in their food, this is mainly because the puppies are still a little young and the vets want the male to have kibble. My service dog doesn’t really like 100% raw as I have tried her before
Please let me know
I have:
-Quail
-Mice
-Small rabbit
Where can I buy whole prey?
Plzz plzzz plzz tell us how can we prepare whole prey at home like we buy whole prey so how much do we need to freeze it and how to give puppies a whole prey???
I have 6 Guinea pigs at home and preparing for a puppy, do you think i should keep them seperated at all times? Is there chance that my puppy's gonna eat them?
I would keep them separated regardless, not because your puppy will want to eat them, but because your puppy might try and play with them, which may harm them!
@@PawsofPrey Ok, Thank you so much!
@Winter Lysak Ok, thank you
Could I feed quail to puppy or do you think I should grind it up ?
That can depend on the puppy’s age and size. For the most part, it is recommended to grind bones for young puppies as they don’t have their adult teeth in yet.

Great video, but why let it eat it on the carpet! My OCD was making me cringe watching that lol very informative though nice job 👍🏼
Trust me I wasn't happy about it lol, he had it on a surface but moved it
That would be my main gripe with feeding whole prey to my cat; that he'll drag it around and play with it ...😁
When I feed raw I put my dog outside or in his bare crate so I can clean it easily 👍
I just fed whole prey quail to my dog buddy, he didn’t like it so I had to bury it in his food

I want to raise quail and rabbit to feed to my family but also dogs.
I'd love to do that as well!
@@PawsofPrey hi! I wanted to ask if it's ok to feed whole prey that I've raised myself if I slaughter it and let it sit in the freezer for a few weeks? lol this sounds kinda creepy but is it ok??

I actually haven't sourced local ducks before, so I can't give you a proper pricing! I'm sorry
What kind of whole prey should I feed a 90 pound dog? Would something like a full grown rabbit be good for that one day?
Most fully grown dogs need around 2% of their body weight’s worth of food daily. This of course does vary from dog to dog. For example, they’ll need around 3.5% if your pet is highly active. I hope this helped. :)
Where does one even purchase these prey?

Live prey is best and there is nothing wrong with it.
Personally I think this is a bad idea if there is a farm near you or someone has a pet rabbit in there yard, u have now though your dog where meat comes from and the smell of what you're feeding hem smells like live animals, so he now know if he kills them he can eat them, many farmers will shoot first and ask questions later and have a legal right to do that, u can't have them arested, they can also sue u for the value of the livestock and any unborn livestock if the animal was pregnant, in an ideal world it would be a problem but sh*t happens and dogs do get out
@Patriots Strike Again! Yes that it possible but But not a sure thing if you start feeding them whole pray you're pretty much guarantee it
@Patriots Strike Again! Bingo!!!! And thank you for the response. Very common sense answer!
People with LGD's on their farms will feed them raw. The smell of an alive animal and a dead one are very different. It's why most people who use dogs for hunting will train them with live animals, not dead ones.
How awful. I couldn't. Lol I don't want a savage.
Kibble is better than raw
