  • The New Division from Past Fx is yet another excellent, modern recreation of a classic, vintage effect; The Clone Theory from EHX.
Made back in 1979, The Clone Theory was a big box, chorus/vibrato pedal with three knobs and an 'Edge' switch for added brightness. A year later, the pedal was given a minor update with a different BBD chip, and by replacing the 'Edge' switch with a 'Vib/Flange' switch, to allow users to dial-in some basic flanger sounds.
Past Fx have not only included the best aspects of both versions of that pedal, but have also improved the noise floor, added input and output level controls, and a few other little tweaks.
Then, they somehow shrunk everything down to fit into a 1590b enclosure. Madness!

One minute in and Im in love. I dont care about my usual demand that the rate should go really slow. Thats just a quirk I use for my own style if modulating my crunchy diy noise oscillators. This is a great guitar pedal for guitarists. Those artists back then squeezed the most awesome sounds, youd be hard pushed to dream them up today. Its down to in part. An inquisitive approach to a limited pallet. Keep the top vids coming. The input is genius. Many classic analogue pedals need this, to compensate the drop. Also many cheap digital pedals need this for synth/ line level gear. The only niggle is the light comes on after you hear the clipping. It would be helpful, as a performer to clock it warning you prior to that nasty type of clipping.

I think the PastFX is a pretty 'nifty' (70's/80's word) sounding pedal. However, I am really liking the sound of the Mel9.
I thought the Cello sound was quite convincing when you first switched to it. Looking forward to a review on that pedal.

Adding a volume control to modulation pedals is always good with me. Shame about side-mounted jacks.

I don't mind side-mounted jacks as long as the power is also side-mounted. At least that way, you get the top edge free to push closer to other pedals.
EHX are the worst offenders for arranging their jacks in the most awkward place possible!

Why hasn't EHX ever reissued the Clone Theory? They reissue so much after all.

They actually did. They made an XO stereo version back in 2008, but apparently its a completely different circuit to the original big box one.

@@PedalExperiments Ah, thanks! It rings a bell actually now you say that. What's the point in 'reissuing' a vintage analogue chorus with a completely different circuit? 🤷‍♂️

@@PedalExperiments so how the Clone Theory chorus sound differ to its more famous ehx brother, the Small Clone? Are they related circuit wise?

I'm really not sure, as I'm just repeating what I've heard. I might be totally wrong. 😄 I also don't know what the difference is between The Clone Theory and the Small Clone. It sounds like something 'Stompbox Breakdown' would cover, though...
