Hi Garry, great coaching video on the backhand technique. Sharing this with all my squash buddies. Once you discover that hip/shoulder turn it just transforms your game and thanks for posting all the new content on this channel, they are all gems.
Thanks for the kind words. I have been coaching for 40 years and have developed systems that can get great results very quickly and now with RUclips I can share them with more people. Revisit this video over time for a mindful refresher which will help reinforce the technique.
Hi Aaron, I go up north to Maroochydore every year around May so we may be able to catch up then, email me and we may be able to work something out. garry@squashanalysis.com
@@squashanalysis5670 thanks, the coaching style videos are definitely interesting also. If you do have any additional tips on incorporating these ideas into solo practice, I guess that would be helpful. I wonder if that could be another video in itself? Just a thought.
Super helpful video. Thank you for posting. I've been working on my backahand and your instruction regarding tying in your hip hitting through the ball was brand new to me. I just tested it out in front of a mirror and it feels super awkward to pair it with my upper body rotation. The work never ends!
I only coach because I enjoy it and have recently started sharing my knowledge via video and not just to the members of my web site where there is 12 years of content. Glad you enjoyed it.
Really interesting video. I really liked the cue for the elbow to instigate the torso turn. Question - the step exercise seemed to emphasise staying upright? I've been told to hinge at the hips, specifically not to stand tall. What do you think of this?
You have to hips if you are on full stretch but all other times you should protect your foundation. For all easy shots staying upright and bending at the knees if required is good. Gone are the days of maintaining a 90 degree wrist through the swing as this forsakes all other muscles to work hard to allow this position, standing more upright and dropping the wrist (not broken) will give reach, power, deception and options in a much more energy efficient way and if you are playing a good standard every little bit helps. If you are in doubt watch Rammy, Momen or Ali Farag and you will see the use of the dropped wrist for high quality outcomes with little effort.
Never too old to develop new skills. As you get older you should loo at playing Racquetball as well and you will find it is less stress and almost thee same movements and swing with massive fitness benefits with longer rallies.
@@chrisherne6454 Played on a normal squash court with a bouncy ball search Squash 57 on RUclips. You use American Raketball racquets but an Australian or English ball as they are way less bouncy than the American ball, almost the same rules and play as squash so you will enjoy it greatly.

Thanks for sharing the video, it helps me dedicate the time required to make more if plenty of people see and enjoy it.
I have seen many coaches coach and none explained it better than you. I am going to have my daughter watch this video. Subscribed for more 👍

Wow, this was excellent active feedback. She progressed a lot! I'll be trying this at training and sharing, thank you Gary!
This is 40 years of coaching experience and it works very well. Enjoy
So wish you were in Brisbane mate - been playing 15 years and still would love a session like this to reinforce fundamentals as per this video

Thanks for the interesting video! I’ll try to incorporate this into my solo practice. I’m forever trying to improve my backhand!
I wasn't sure if coaching videos or explanation videos would be received better. Glad you liked it.

Keep all movements short and very strong with most before you hit the ball. Hip beside the ball to front wall not rotating.
Thank you, this is really helpful. Will you be doing a video on forehand drive as well?
Yes, as well as other shots.
amazing coach !! I need to practice that way too
