Skills for squash - How to flow around the court
Not only will you flow but you will use your energy better and be more balanced if you shuffle rather than run to the ball when possible.
You can easily go from one side of the court to the other or to any corner from the center so it is very usable.

Forehand chicken wing swing
Просмотров 3,1 тыс.2 месяца назад
The chicken wing swing is used by all standard players in different positions on the court. You do not have one swing so you need to be proficient at hitting with different methods and still getting a quality outcome. The chicken swing is one of the first swings you will learn with early quick prep and a great position to start from for cut and control.

If your current outcomes are inconsistent or you find yourself returning cross court because it is easier you need to improve your swing. We get rid of all the unnecessary parts of the swing and fully control the most important parts and the outcomes are very consistent.
Skills for squash - Backhand back wall drives
Просмотров 2 тыс.2 месяца назад
Even if you are competent in getting the ball deep off the back wall unless you are hitting with power you will find you will be picked off with a volley when playing skilled players, add pace to your drive and no one is getting that on a volley. This is an energy efficient way of power driving the ball down the wall.
Skills for squash - The HOP

If you have ever wanted to feel smooth and fluent around the court then here is the answer to adjusting your movement to ensure the best position relative to the ball, the HOP allows you to maintain your front foot and pick up at least a racquet length in distance with minimal energy usage and lightning fast. Hitting quality from a tough situation is a sign of a high level player requiring full muscle control to get a consistent outcome. Skills for squash - Left hand box serve
Просмотров 2,3 тыс.3 месяца назад
Serving from the left box means you generally hitting narrow from the centre of the court to a right handers strength so you need to have a consistent quality serve to put them under pressure. Cutting around the back of the ball will give you control and make the ball bite and die in the back corner. Develop a few variations and you have all you need to put the pressure on from the first hit.
Squash analysis - Split step variations

You make small movements within your split depending on the direction you came from and the direction you need to go, all this happens very fast and your feet stay very close to the floor at all times making it super fast. Using an engaged body on your split will make you even faster, there is a fair bit to take in here so you may need to watch this a couple of times.
Skills for squash - Float to target depth
Просмотров 1,5 тыс.3 месяца назад
Depth is more important then tightness to the wall, you can just miss the wall and it will allow a full racquet face hit on the ball but if you just miss quality depth the shot will still be difficult to return and at least it will take options away from your opponent. Floating the ball to depth allows you greater control over the outcome of your shot and gives the control to hit the side wall ...

    Been practising solo focusing on your movement videos and the backhand slide boast video in particular. I feel like improving those two things is a cheat code for amateur play, who needs perfect back/mid court drops when you can slide boast against amateurs?

    • @squashanalysis5670
      @squashanalysis5670 25 дней назад

      Move well and you play well and you have more shot options but you also stay balanced and can then see your opponents body motion and choose to play to difficult areas. The slide boast allows you to deflect with a sharp swing so a balanced move with several options means you are improving greatly and are becoming a more advanced player. Time to look to play better players and challenge yourself. Glad the videos are helping.

    Thanks for your videos, you have some really unique insights and approaches I’ve not heard before. I’d like to hear your opinion on the “elbow out” backhand prep approach (ala Nick Matthew) and why you’d consider your “elbow in” approach superior to the (pretty much opposite) advice given by Nick Matthew - I can’t link the YT video, but it’s the SquashSkills one titled “Nick Matthew Spacing” (at about 20 seconds in) This is not to try and prove you wrong or to disagree with you in any way, (a lot of top players like Gaultier have a technique more similar to yours) rather the opposite - I see little discussion about this topic online between the two techniques and it seems the sport has not yet agreed upon what is the most optimal and the consequences of each approach (whereas on the forehand side, we see similar optimal technique in all high level players for the most part) If you have some thoughts about it, it would be a unique video to make a comparison of.

    • @squashanalysis5670
      @squashanalysis5670 Месяц назад

      The close prep is for when you are in tight situations with minimal racquet prep space and the power is generated from the short strong body action, if your arm is away you need more space and it is a longer move for your arm taking longer to complete. I teach the Nick Mathew space early to pull into a strong body position rather than throwing your arm away as you hit affectively requiring more strength to hit but this is when you have space and are an advanced player as it takes trained muscle strength to achieve and players need to understand the differences between a base round the body swing and the NM low prep pendulum swing. So they are both great and not one style suits every situation or body type, no one is right or wrong it is all about your outcomes.

    Great insights. So as you indicated in the forehand intro video this swing is applied when you get furthest away from the sidewall. Whereas near the sidewall, the swing and follow-through are different in comparison to this. Can we apply this same logic on the FH drop shots also? Also on the backhand? Or does BH has different mechanics. BTW, thanks for these incredible videos.

    You're not slicing this as you hit the ball aye? So, the racquet face is square to where you want to hit the ball (which is probably upwards a bit) and then as you swing through, the racquet head turns parallel to the floor. Is that correct?

    • @squashanalysis5670
      @squashanalysis5670 2 месяца назад

      Yep, more of a body hit with the arm staying strong and parallel to the side wall so the racquet is in a perfect position longer. There is very little slice in this shot hit with a full face so you need to hit the ball lower and flatter to get quality outcomes but the good news is it will not go out of court.

      The swing is very quick and you come off the ball the instant you have struck the ball so you will have momentum back to the T with ample time. • @squashanalysis5670
      @squashanalysis5670 2 месяца назад

      You are 100% correct, if you start aggressively stopping your swing you need to do arm and wrist mobility and strength exercises or you will have elbow issues. Developing a compact swing that finishes at shoulder height is fine but stopping very short can cause issues when your racquet head weight needs to be stopped quickly.

      It is critical for juniors. I like to add cost where they do one court sprint if they prep wrong, you get fantastic results very quickly.

    When I hit the backhand, I have a problem with my wrist loosening and losing strength. I realized that I wasn't positioning my body correctly when I hit the backhand. I knew I was close to the ball, but when I hit the backhand, I'm scared of missing the ball. I need to practice finding the power zone of my backhand. Thank you for the video.

      Players that break their wrist when they hit tend to think your arm hits the ball but if you can change to believe your body core muscles hit the ball and your arm stays strong and allows connection then you will not loo for the flic power from our wrist. This only works if you let the ball come into your POWER ZONE.

    I lack the backhand step, but I found it while looking for a way to practice on my own. Thank you for the video. Watching the video while resting due to a ligament injury is giving me a lot of comfort.

    Fascinating stuff! Is there any particular training you'd recommend for strengthening your arm/wrist for these motions outside of playing squash?

    Really helpful for smaller guys like me. Should this replace the traditional backhand technique? If so, whats a good solo drill for this? I'm guessing it wont always be possible to hit this way in a match, especially when stretching to reach or digging the ball out of corners / backhand rallies
