Mike - Great looking bench, and is designed simple enough I feel confident I could build one. Just noticed Mark Lengal's comment - what an act of generosity, giving away a $100 bench. Blessings to you and the family. Hi to Melissa, Hunter, Hannah, and Eva.

Good looking park bench!!! We built 52 of those built out of cedar for the county park last year. Once they dryed out, we used a natural stain and sealer, followed by 2 coats of polyurethane. Turned out great

Greetings Mike! Thank you for the Outdoor Garden Bench project, I recently constructed one and I just love it. I'm thinking about modifying the plan to seat three people. I came to the conclusion that the extra 2x4 was not extra. I think it was intended for leg support, to keep the legs from twisting (warping), but was not included in the instructions. I also found and error in the print on the instructions where it shows the cut for the angle, where the armrest meets the back rest. The instruction has 15" and it should be 15 degrees. Mike I really enjoy your post. You really make things simple.
Keep enjoying the outdoors. Thank you.

Hey Mike, I loved the video. It was super helpful and easy to complete! I didn't own a
scroll saw or jig saw to make the rounded cuts for the arm rests so I bought two
treated pickets that were rounded on one end. So, I just made a straight cut and it turned out
great. Lots of fun. Thanks again!

Might want to use galvanized carriage bolts to attach the legs to the seat frame. After a couple years even coated deck screws will rust away to needles.

Especially into 'pressure treated' lumber, UNLESS the screw are specially for that kind of lumber.

Dana Harsh...Your comment about deck screws rusting after a couple of years is interesting. I used deck screws into treated pine for an outside project. About 7-8 years later I needed to replace some of the wood pieces but the deck screws that I took out were in almost new condition...I was pleasantly surprised. Maybe it depends on where one lives ? Maybe the deck screws I used were coated for treated lumber? I will have to check my boxes of deck screws and read if it says for treated lumber..??

You need to see if you can find someone locally that can pressure treat lumber. Since you're doing such good lumber anyway and pressure treating doesn't require dried lumber you probably could save lots of money. Just saying, also I think there are some treatments you can put on your own lumber that would be as good as the treated lumber that you're buying at Lowes.

Love the video! And thanks for the link to the plans. I got inspired yesterday to build one of these out of scrap lumber and left-over composite decking (in place of the 1 x 6's for the seat and back). I'm sure it would last longer if I went out and bought treated lumber, but I had a bunch of "free" leftover lumber from the framing of our new house). Our builder was even nice enough to leave me a whole box of Timbertech composite screws. The only thing better than a $100 bench is a $0 bench!

Been there. Done the daughter's wedding on the property. Take a 10 to 12 inch log. Put it on your mill and spilt it down the center. Cut to bench lengths desired. Flip half round slabs upside down on two larger rounds with V notches cut into them. Wala! "Free" rustic benches that make the guests be like "wow." Beats $100 benches any day. LOL

Hi Mike. This is your neighbor to the north in Caledonia, NY. I really love the quality and content of your videos. I'd really miss the fine job you do with your productions, but, hey, you have a life and you have a very busy year ahead of you. Might I suggest for Monday to Friday, if you must make less elaborate videos to buy yourself more productive time around home, that you do a skip week schedule. One week do a compacted video M, W & F, then the next week shorten up on T & Th. Also on the weekends take a day for yourself and the family with no cameras. One weekend record on Saturday and the next record on Sunday. I think this would give you the best of both worlds that you described and keep your subscribers happy, too. Please let me know what you think.

I never put the 1/4 inch gap between the boards as they will shrink over time. The gap will be pretty big after it shrinks if you space the boards apart. If you but the boards tight against each other, after the boards shrink, you will have about a 1/4 inch gap between the boards.

I like the way that you built the bench. I plan on building this same bench. But I can see one thing that concerns me. The legs are just held on with deck screws. With the weight of 2 people, it may not be strong enough. I would attach the legs with either lag bolts or bolts and nuts (galvanized). This would make it much stronger.

I was waiting for you to make a "rookie mistake" while building this bench, but it never happened. Your knowledge of wood shrinkage and wood movement served you well Mike. I'm glad you are letting the bench dry before applying stain. I saw water come out of one board as you where driving in a screw. Are you aware that it's best to apply a wood sealer or pre-stain before applying the stain. So pine pitch will not come out of any knot holes and get on your guest's clothing. Don't ask me how I know this...lol. My first outdoor bench turned out a sticky mess once a few rains and summer heat happened to it.

Also not supposed to stain or seal treated lumber until after its been exposed outdoors for a period of 2 years. Stain will peel and be horribly discolored and hard to get rid of that.
